Chapter 16 - The True Enemy (Section 3)

*Note: The 1st 13 chapters are FE7's novelization.

Shortly after Dieck’s mercenaries took down the ballistae unit, Castle Armagh fell to the Lycian Army.

They were now occupying the castle. From within the throne room, as Roy gave orders left and right telling his soldiers to search the castle, patrol the nearby area, and take turns getting some rest; he felt the suspicions weighing on his heart become confident beliefs.

‘Both the pirate’s ambush, and this attack… make it clear that someone is targeting us.’

However, in the end, he still hadn’t figured out the reason why the Armagh Army attacked his.

But his soldiers did capture several enemy soldiers and take them prisoner. If they coughed up some information, it might reveal something about the identity of the Lycian Army’s true enemy.

As he waited to receive a report on their interrogation, Lilina came into the room to see him. “So, Roy… Why do you think the army here attacked us?”

“Unfortunately, we still don’t know. The interrogators are questioning the prisoners we took now…” As he vented his frustrations to Lilina, he looked at her and saw the worry and fear on her face.

She was not overreacting at all, far from it. No one would be able to calm down when an enemy they knew nothing about targeting them.

As his expression clouded over, she said, “Why don’t we send a request for information to Etruria Castle?”

“That’s not a bad idea. This is about far more than just chasing out bandits… Let’s try talking to Cecilia about it first.”

His army had to fight bandits, all while an unknown enemy attacked them… They had no intention of losing, but the immense pressure of always being watched would hurt morale and have a huge impact on how fatigued they became over time; both things he would like to avoid.

Roy thought that they needed to get themselves out of this situation as soon as possible, and decided to agree to Lilina’s suggestion to discuss her proposal with their teacher.

Just then, they heard a knock on the door to the throne room, and a soldier walked in. “Excuse me, Milord! A girl locked up in the dungeon wishes to speak with you…”

“With me? About what? Please bring her here.”

“Yes, Milord!”

The moment they saw the girl the soldier returned with, they knew that she was no ordinary villager.

She had bright brown hair coiled up into two buns on her head, and wore a revealing outfit with sleeves made of fabric so thin, they could easily see through them. Two long strips of peach-colored cloth floated down from her wrists.

Her appearance reminded him of a dancer he had seen in a group of minstrels.

“Are you Lord Roy? The general here to chase out the bandits…?” She first confirmed his identity.

“Yes, I am. What have you come to ask me?” In response, Roy got straight to the point.

Her face immediately lit up, then she hugged him and pleaded, “Please, Lord Roy! My friends! Help my friends!!”

“Ahhh!” Roy yelped in surprise at the girl’s sudden movements.

“H-Hey! Don’t be rude! Get off him!” After Lilina shook off her shock, she panicked to get the girl away from him.

He had few experiences like this in his life, so it made him both happy and embarrassed at the same time as his face turned red.His heart still beating wildly in his chest, he looked back at the girl in front of him. “A-Anyway, calm down, then speak. Who are your friends?”

“My name is Larum! I’m a member of the Resistance!”

“The group fighting the bandits, and protecting the peoples’ way of life?”

“Yeah… No!” At first, Larum nodded, but then she quickly shook her head in disagreement.

“Am I wrong?”

“Of course we do that as well, but our true enemy is the Etrurian lords who came here! They protect the bandits and use them as their cover!”

Roy was dumbfounded by Larum’s words. Lilina also gasped and stared at her.

Unable to believe that the very lords who were supposed to keep bandits under control were actually protecting them, he asked in pure disbelief, “What?! Is that true?!”

“The lords of these isles force everyone to the mines, and work them until they die there! Even if they are injured or fall ill, they are not allowed to take any breaks… So please! We’re fighting all over the Isles! We plan to save the people at Mount Eburacum next!!” The girl was so upset that she spoke too quickly to understand.

“Wait, what’s wrong? Just calm down, please!”

“We think our plans were leaked to the Etrurian lords! They threatened a local villager… We didn’t think he would talk… If I don’t get back and tell everyone soon… then… then… Echidna will be…!” Larum’s expression quickly changed, and she looked like she was going to cry any minute.

The lords she spoke of that were so corrupt had to be the nobles assigned to the Isles by the Etrurian mainland. If the Lycian Army fought the lords, they would have to be ready to fight Etruria.

However, Lycia still needed Etruria’s support. It would be a disastrous strategy to fight the lords. But when they told Cecila everything that was happening, she might tell them it was the right thing to do.

Most people would say they have no obligation to fight for the people of a foreign nation.

But Roy chose to do so. He didn’t want to ignore people who were in desperate need of saving, nor could he do so even if he tried.

He looked back at Larum and said with conviction, “I understand. We will go to the northern mountains immediately to save the Resistance and the people working the mines!”

“Really?! I’m so happy, thank you Lord Roy!”

“Ahhh! N-Not again, Larum!”

“C’mon, I told you to get off him!!” Roy tried to jump out of the way, but Larum hugged him again, and Lilina pushed her way between them again.

Once she was completely pulled away from Roy, Larum stuck her tongue out, then looked back at him. “Lord Roy, when I was captured at this castle, they took a sword I had with me! Can you help me look for it?

Roy accepted her request, and ordered a few of his soldiers to search the castle. They returned with a sword they found just outside the dungeon. As thanks for finding it, she told Roy she wanted him to use it.

“What kind of sword is it?” Roy asked as he took the sword, unsheathed it, and carefully looked it over.

It was the same length as a standard sword, but the blade had sharp edges on it like that of a saw. It seemed to have been crafted to cut through something tough and hard.

“It’s a sword our leader, Echidna had. Since you’ve agreed to help the Resistance, I don’t think she would be mad if you guys used it. It’s called a “Wyrmslayer,” but since there’s no such thing as dragons… maybe it would be effective against wyvern riders? I’m not really sure.”

Roy and Lilina looked at each other, but kept quiet.

That night…

Just south of Mount Eburacum stood Eburacum Castle. On the surface, it appeared to be built to station the soldiers protecting the mines from the bandits stealing excavated gold, but they were actually there to keep strict watch over any of the villagers attempting to flee the mines.

And even further south from the castle was the village where the Resistance’s hideout was located. It was a single house that looked no different from the villagers’ houses on the outside. Currently, their leader Echidna, as well as their several unit commanders, were all gathered inside.

It was the night of a full moon. Only starlight filled the sky, making it the perfect night for a secret meeting.

A candlestick placed in the middle of a simple table was the house's only source of light.

“...What did you say?! Larum has been captured?!” Echidna's voice echoed through the room.

She had her medium length hair wrapped up in a long simple cloth, and sharp masculine facial features that at first glance might make others mistake her for a man. But there was no doubt she was a woman, as her ample chest proved.

One of the commanders said in response to her question, “Yes. I saw her being taken to Castle Armagh myself.”

“I'm sorry, Elffin. I know that she is your personal attendant.” Echidna turned to the person next to her and apologized.

Elffin shook his head.

In contrast to Echidna, he had beautiful facial features that could easily make him be mistaken for a woman. His long, luscious golden hair that glittered even in the dim candlelight, calm demeanor, and graceful movements gave him a regal air. He also appeared to have poor eyesight, as he squinted to confirm that it was indeed Echidna he was looking at.

“Please do not worry about her. She knew the dangers when she agreed to become a messenger… Though she does seem to be unsuited for covert missions.” Despite his words, the look on his face was not a positive one at all.

Echidna was worried about Larum too. She was a loud, rowdy girl, but her bright personality helped the Resistance's few members remain brave as they continued to fight. The other commanders all seemed to feel the same way, as their faces clouded over just as much as Elffin’s did.

The commander spoke up again. “But I have received some information of interest to us! Today, Castle Armagh fell to the Lycian League Army, currently dispatched to chase out the bandits.”

Echidna’s eyes widened. “...Really? Nord and his men were certainly no different from bandits, but an army sent by the mainland would never act so boldly… What do you think of this news, Elffin?”

After he sat lost in thought for a minute, Elffin opened his mouth. “Considering how little intel we have right now, I cannot say anything for certain. But because they are not the mainland Etrurian Army, we may be able to trust them. Their general should be a boy named Roy, who won a battle against Bern. Because he is young, when he first saw the current tragic state of the islands, he might have been filled with righteous fury. I also think that I should try to see Larum once, to confirm myself that she safe.”

Elffin served as Echidna's adviser, and was the main person responsible for transforming the Resistance from a group of villagers to an army that could fight.

Echidna always asked him what to do next and heeded his advice, and this time was no exception. “I think so too. He might be better than the lords here. And we can't defeat them on our own. As our first step, it's not a bad idea to try asking if they would like to work together. But it's not a good idea now. Our plan is tomorrow.”

Their plan was to attack Mount Eburacum and free the people forced to work there. Tomorrow was the awaited day of their attack, and they had gathered in this hideout today to confirm that their final preparations were complete.

Echidna looked around at her allies, then said, “We will meet with the Lycian League Army after tomorrow's plan is complete. Agreed?”

They all nodded in unison.

None of them showed even a hint of hesitation. They all looked back at Echidna with serious expressions on their faces.

Then, one of them spoke up. “Um… Leader? Can I ask just one thing?”

“Hm? What is it?”

“Who's that guy?” He asked, and pointed at the corner of the room.

Sitting there on the floor, leaning against the wall and snoring, was a large man. He appeared to be in his mid to late thirties, had a bushy mustache, and his chiseled muscles were an impressive sight to see.

“Ah, that's right, I haven't mentioned him yet. He said he's a traveling mercenary looking for his daughter, who is traveling all across Elibe to train her combat skills. He said his name was… Bartre, I think.”

“Why is he here?”

“When we fought in a skirmish with one of the lord's units a few days ago, he appeared suddenly and helped us. He saw us and said that we were so outnumbered, he couldn't just leave us there.”

Echidna's answer made another of her allies ask worriedly, “Are you sure he should be here? He might be a spy sent by one of the lords…’

Of course they should be worried.

Echidna and all the other members of the Resistance were outlaws being publicly targeted by the Western Isle’s lords. The possibility that a spy had snuck into their ranks to confirm their whereabouts was undeniable.

But Echidna laughed their concern off. “Ah ha ha, he's fine. He didn't seem to be the kind of person who could tell a lie, and doesn't seem like he'd be very good at deceiving people anyway. Actually, he didn't make me worry about that at all from the moment I met him. …But for now, I'll keep an eye on him myself.”

Everyone trusted what their leader said, and did not ask any further questions.

Her discerning eye was what had caused her to overcome the added challenges of being a female leader, and led the Resistance to grow into the army they were today. So far, they had never once found a traitor amongst their ranks. And it was all because she assessed each and every recruit, only allowing people who truly believed in their cause to join them.

It was for that reason that they were slow to gain new members, but in return, they had grown into a tightly knit group. They all trusted her and followed her every order.

“Anyway, let’s confirm everything for tomorrow. Cade and Graham’s units will attack the mines from the northeast to draw the enemy’s attention. Meanwhile, my unit will sneak inside and…”

The meeting ended shortly after that discussion was over.

To rest up in preparation for the next day’s events, everyone went to sleep.

At that point, none of them had any way of knowing just what unthinkable events they would find themselves caught up in tomorrow.
