MIDSOMMAR (2019) Garde: B
Not for the casual movie watcher. It's hard to turn away from. Great DP work. The ending worked, not what you'll be guessing.

Midsommar - culture shock(ing)
Tumblr media
@a24films
I had already seen Ari Aster’s psychological horror movie Midsommar when our movie afternoon took place. A great many number of countries were represented in the room with the ever-fussing projector, but I alone was of Swedish descent. Already used to receiving questions about this cucumber-shaped country of mine, it was nothing new to try to answer questions about midsommar traditions and Swedish landscapes once the movie started. However, guiding exchange students through cultural heritage museum Skansen, and the green fields of a mushroom high within Aster’s second feature film are two very different things.
Midsommar has one of the most chilling beginnings of a movie, not just because of the horrifying incident taking place, but because it shows little bits and pieces of what severe anxiety can look like, or rather feel like. That thin line a person suffering from always thinking the worst is going to happen. Choosing between continuing to assume the worst or try to think positively and take a deep breath and say ”it’s probably ok”. It’s partcularly hard to detach from this kind of thinking when later on all of a person’s worst fears are evidently realised.
With Aster’s filmmaking style, there is just something so distinct that I can’t really put my finger on. It’s just so uplifting and rewarding to see a film where the maker has already created their own style and language through the shots. Just like with his first feature film Hereditary, there is something distinctly Aster about it. The shots, the cutting between old(?) and ongoing events, combined with great acting makes for a delicious horror recipe. Aster creates suspense and intensity throughout the film, with an unnerving uncomfortable feeling, mixed with clear shock moments (there was a fair amount of shocked screams from the group throughout the movie).
I had to clarify early on that the film was not shot in Sweden, there was just something about the trees that didn’t feel quite Swedish pine trees by the road… But I get it, it’s usually easier and cheaper to shoot a movie in Hungary instead. The amount of paperwork it takes to send a parcel in Sweden could make any filmmaker take a step back from thinking of running a whole film production in-country. I get it. But in a strange way, the weird bright green colours of the Hungarian set created an even more warped sense of reality which I suppose served the film’s purpose. A happy surprise was the inclusion of a number of Swedish actors, many of them prominent stage actors. I never thought I would see the guy from that Narnia movie (Will Poulter) in the same movie as the man who plays the neighbour girl’s dad (Lars Väringer) in the classic ”Sunes sommar” – an essential for any Swedish 90’s kid.
Florence Pugh is a revelation. The way she carries the story foward and makes you feel for her both through those horryfying moments and through her frustration with her boyfriend acting like quite a d***. Pugh layers the role and makes her character more complex. As a viewer you feel sorry for her, while sometimes also finding her annoying through the eyes of her friends. Anyway, if not mistaken it was her big breakthrough and I hope she delves into a variety of genres in the future.
I’m wondering how this has unknowingly influenced my friends’ view of midsommar celebrations. I can explain it based on my knowledge and the midsommars I’ve had and they may listen. But maybe after all, they won’t shake the feeling that underneath the smörgåsbord lies something else, that there may be something else hidden in that pickled herring. I guess we’ll find out come end of June…
