Man in a Suitcase: Dead Man's Shoes (1.11, ITC, 1967)
"You're losing your touch, that report could make you a great deal of money."
"Well, I'd probably just spend it anyway."

Duffell not francis#my bad. guest star Derren Nesbitt‚ having presumably heard tales of Bradford's rough approach to fight scenes‚ refused to do the final#fight with him as he'd just had dental work done; a stand in took his place and‚ according to at least one source‚ received a bloody nose#for his troubles. Carson gives a very good dialogue lite performance as the sweaty and suffering spy with a bullet wound and Jayne Sofiano#is a very charming girlfriend who'll go to any lengths to protect him; Murray Evans is badly dubbed as the soviet contact pulling strings

Same Anon as last time I’m SCREECHING BESTIEXTDDTDGD /pos
Omg imagine if like Scott has a reverse Larry Butz thing going on. He has rizz 1000 but everyone he gets close to fucking dies (Jimmy etc)/ is evil (Martyn etc)/ gets ultra luck (Cleo etc) somehow 💀 1/3 chance of greatness. Desert duo can’t even joke about it anymore cus it’s just #SadAF
Luckily Scar n Grian sees to be winning w Scott so that’s slay :) they might need to give him a hug tho his husband os dead and it only gets worse o7
HOLYFFBHFHDDH PROESCUTOR LIZZIE AND DETECTIVE JOEL POYRWSEHDDDHYD SHADOW QUEEN LIZZIE AND HER DETECTIVE <3
Sometimes they Fuck Uou Up sometimes Joel gets stuck in a window cus he was tryna break into a building for evidence for Lizzie and Lizzie is desperately trying to get her idiot out so she misses the court startingfuffhfhf-
Lizzie and Ren Most Dramatic Ever. Grian is the one ‘normal’ guy in the law force (Joel is feral). They get Jellie on the witness stand at one point and she wins them the case.
Scar wins a bet for that one lol
- 🫐 Anon
oh my GOD your brain anon./pos putting Jellie on the stand is SUCH AN ACE ATTORNEY MOVE?? THATS ALSO SUCH A SCAR MOVE? my plan for this AU is that it has the vibe of ace attorney, but not the same plot.
and absolutely lizzie would show up late to court because of joel’s bullshit. one of his dogs got out and both of them had to find it, but it ended up just being in the bathroom or something.
and scott doesn’t really register jimmy’s death until after the case, after he’s spent time in jail and in court, and then he finally breaks down in the defendant lobby.
luckily, he’s got a defense and his counsel to help!

First game: Impulse is still Phoenix and his rival is still Tango as Edgeworth. Cleo is still doomed mentor Mia and now her little sister Gem is Maya. We also have Rendog featuring as Larry Butz, Skizz as Will Powers, and Keralis as Gumshoe (getting a little bit of Big Eyes in there with him and Tango.) Lastly, we have Martyn as Manfred, because he's the only one aside from Cub who can pull that off and Cub is already taken. Joe Hills takes the role of the Judge throughout all three games, with one notable exception.
DLC: Once Gem returns to Kurain, Joel as a bright-eyed young Ema shows up to convince Impulse to take a case to save Joel's older brother, Beef. Beef is under the thumb of Iskall, aka Damon Gant, because of a staged murder scene that could land Joel in jail if Iskall shows the evidence.
Second game: Impulse and Gem and Keralis continue in their roles, of course. Skizz as Will shows up again. We also meet Mumbo, who is taking the role of AA!Pearl as Gem's younger cousin. Doc, of course, is still Franziska von Karma. The final case brings us four new faces/names: Wels as the murder victim Juan Corrida, Hels as his rival and murderer Engarde, False as Adrian Andrews, and lastly xB as de Killer, which is mostly because I was thinking about the line "to the gentleman who just spoke now... would you like to die?" and I heard it in xB's voice.
Third game: Only a few new faces here! Our new prosecutor is Etho as Godot, with his tragic past as Diego Armando. Impulse's unexpectedly-still-living old flame BDubs is Iris, hiding a longstanding secret and working with Etho to save Gem from one last scheme of Morgan's. Lastly, in the part of the trial where Tango pretends to be a defense attorney and we bring in a new judge, Zedaph takes up the gavel.
AA4: Impulse has fallen from grace and adopted a daughter—Hermit!Pearl takes the role of Trucy Wright. They hire newbie lawyer Grian as Apollo to defend Impulse from a murder charge, which ends with Grian's mentor Cub as Kristoph found guilty of murder and landed in jail... a sequence of events which brings Scar in the role of Klavier Gavin back to town, and also a much more jaded Joel as his detective partner. Grian and Scar's rivalry starts off with the trial of Jimmy as a cocksure Wocky Kitaki. But that's not all the secrets out there; when Stress as a young Vera Misham is accused of the murder of her father Xisuma as Drew Misham, Grian and Scar find a lot more to uncover regarding Impulse, Cub, and a trial seven years ago.
updating hermittorney please hold
#i tried so hard to get hypno and jevin in here but couldn't for the life of me#which is hella annoying bc it would work so well to have people for shadi/zak and valant but i couldn't make the shuffling around work#hermittorney#also added jimmy and martyn bc they're repeat guests/close friends#but i don't intend for this to add other smps#there's Enough Going On

Are You Being Served? (Full TV Series) 1972-1985
youtube
A British sitcom created and written by executive producer David Croft and Jeremy Lloyd, with contributions from Michael Knowles and John Chapman, for the BBC. Set in London, the show follows the misadventures and mishaps of the staff of the retail ladies' and gentlemen's clothing departments in the flagship department store of a fictional chain called Grace Brothers. The series was broadcast on the BBC for ten seasons, totalling 69 episodes between 8 September 1972 and 1 April 1985 – and included five Christmas specials. There was also a 1977 film, a spin-off series Grace & Favour with some of the same main cast in 1991–1992, and a one-off episode with a new cast in 2016. Since its original release, all 69 episodes, the restored pilot, the Christmas specials, the sequel and the film have been released on DVD. Are You Being Served? was a great success in the UK. The series was also popular in Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland, and was successfully aired in The Netherlands and Belgium with Dutch subtitles. The show was also popular in Israel and in the United States, where it gained a loyal and enthusiastic following when PBS television stations began airing reruns of it in the mid-1980s, along with other British sitcoms. In 2004, it was ranked 20th in a television countdown of Britain's Best Sitcom. Starring- Mollie Sugden Trevor Bannister Frank Thornton John Inman Wendy Richard Arthur Brough Nicholas Smith Larry Martyn Harold Bennett Arthur English James Hayter Penny Irving Vivienne Johnson Alfie Bass Mike Berry Kenneth Waller Candy Davis Moira Foot Benny Lee Milo Sperber Theme music - Ronnie Hazlehurst Seasons 1, 8, 9 & 10 are blocked from youtube in Australia, so here are those seasons on dailymotion- Season 1 - https://www.dailymotion.com/library/playlist/x77iec Season 8 - https://www.dailymotion.com/library/playlist/x77ief Season 9 - https://www.dailymotion.com/library/playlist/x77iep Season 10 - https://www.dailymotion.com/library/playlist/x77iev Here is also the movie, it was released after Season 5 -
https://www.dailymotion.com/library/playlist/x77ifa And here is the spin off series, Grace & Favour (American title: Are You Being Served? Again!)
https://www.dailymotion.com/library/playlist/x77if5 The idea of a spin-off was suggested by the cast of Are You Being Served? almost immediately after the original series ended in 1985. Lloyd and Croft liked the idea, but agreed that the department store format was exhausted and that any spin-off would require a change of location. Despite the enthusiasm of the original cast, it was almost seven years before Lloyd and Croft brought them back to television. The plot line that brought the cast from the store to the manor was considered remarkably topical, since it aired just a few months after the death of British publishing tycoon Robert Maxwell, who was revealed to have borrowed heavily against his own employees' pensions. Grace & Favour is different from Are You Being Served? in that it involves a continuous story arc, with certain plot elements, such as the relationship between Mr Humphries and Mavis Moulterd, unfolding throughout each episode. This in turn allowed the series to involve more complex storylines and subplots, making it possible to include returning guest stars and location shooting, neither of which was ever done on Are You Being Served? The title of the series is a double play on words. A "grace and favour" is a home or other property owned by a monarch but given to the use of a faithful retainer upon retirement, as with the retired characters in this series. Grace is also the surname of the owner of Grace Brothers, the fictional department store where the characters previously worked and was also the previous owner of Millstone Manor. Are You Being Served? cast member Trevor Bannister (Mr Lucas) chose not to return. Arthur English (Mr Harman) was also not brought back due to his retirement. Wendy Richard (Miss Brahms) took time off from filming EastEnders to film Grace & Favour. Also returning to their roles were John Inman (Mr Humphries), Mollie Sugden (Mrs Slocombe), Frank Thornton (Captain Peacock) and Nicholas Smith (Mr Rumbold). These were the same five actors to have appeared in every episode of Are You Being Served?

what happens when you let a bunch of vault hunters loose in digart (aka, virtual reality minecraft)
vox downloaded the game at the request of panda, who needed to prove to teep that the game has undergone massive updates and is now capable of supporting custom mods and excessive cheating.
within an hour, the two broke the server from spawning far too many bosses so that they could do a nonstop boss rush and update teep’s achievements.
vox rebooted the server and put a restriction on the amount of bosses that could be spawned in a single world and space.
this didn’t stop panda and teep from making pocket dimensions and fighting the bosses one by one, making the game lag horribly, and vox gave up on stopping them because they kept finding loopholes.
this leads into vox making their own avatar and joining the two on their never-ending quest to subjugate each world. if they can’t stop them, then join them.
panda and teep generally explore brand new worlds, and are usually the first to chart said worlds since they cheated in all their equipment and skills. vox shrugged and let it happen so they could explore with them faster. the two rock up into town to drop off maps, loot and materials before heading off again. they’re considered founding figures.
honeydew joins (from the grass room) to put down his roots, and begins a miniature spawn hub town. he names it ‘digfarts’ and it becomes a permanent fixture on the server. he’s the mayor thanks to self voting.
curious about why honeydew is spending so much time in the grass room instead of making them coffee, xephos logs in and begins a bee factory on the outskirts of digfarts. they accidentally breed a type of extreme killer bee which kills players and has to be confined in a massive sphere. otherwise, the bees produce honey, beeswax and other assorted products used in the market, magic or as trading.
players who break the rules are subjected to the ‘bee farts’ (xephos was against the naming but honeydew won by majority vote). the bees cause hallucinations, tingles and the heebee jeebies. remember that this is in vr. good, now wonder why nobody ever breaks the rules.
the bridge and frigate crews start a town market, and run their own supply chain and exploration crews. each of them have their own gangs, motifs and specialities. they’re all very into the game, and plan their shifts accordingly so they can log in.
daltos starts a cheese cult, ‘the cheesers’, monopolizing all production and selling of cheese. weirdly, he and his cult encourage the consumption of cheese. all registered, owned and named cows must pay a milk tax to the cult so that more cheese can be made. people who break this law have their whole house filled with cheese.
zylus and rythian become tower wizards. they look after the tainted zones and research magic; rythian eventually goes ‘insane’ and constantly needs guarding against the phantoms and weirdness that happens to him whenever he logs in. zylus can cast almost every single spell and is undefeated in pvp. his only weakness is ironically, cheese, thanks to shenanigans. touching cheese robs him of his powers. he has a deal with daltos so daltos doesn’t take advantage of this. in return, zylus has to buy weekly cheese from him or daltos will tell everyone and zylus has to reset to get a different weakness. and no, zylus hasn’t realised.
nanosounds and ravs become the ‘buff hooligans’ (a rejected nickname for the foursome ravs was previously involved in), and run around killing things for the wizards, people, and protect the wizards from themselves.
nilesy runs a cat museum. he collects anything cat related, and also cats. it took him two weeks to build the whole thing, and it’s always expanding. minecarts are needed to tour all fifteen sections. he also runs a fishing business.
hatfilms run an honest exploration and needs club (‘the thumb of truth’), and provide a lot of the fuel from oil, grease and energy deposits found all over the world. they have a contract with the cheesers, wizards, digfart’s mayor, etc. you name it, they’ll get it, for a price. the only thing they don’t traffic is bees. that’s...a sore topic for them. each of them specialise in certain areas, trott being the engineer, contractor and main cultist, alsmiffy in beasts, magic and tomfoolery and ross in materials and building. hollie is the ever patient receptionist of this venture.
will strife and parvis manufacture weapons, guns, somehow, and also, missile launchers. after accidentally nuking digfarts twice on two separate occasions, honeydew forces the two to put everything that could wipe the server into a secure and hidden vault. needless to say, strife installed an emergency backdoor, just in case the server ever needs to ensure a winning side. parvis is the key. he doesn’t know it.
zoeya and saberial logged in briefly to build an island as a monument to their eternal love. it has since become a protected zone for unicorns, neutral and friendly mobs. nobody is allowed to touch it or risk bee farts. the island is shaped like ravs the rooster. it’s also populated by special chickens. said chickens lay precious metals and materials. only a few parties have a permit gather the goods. there’s a real art to breeding the chickens; zoeya and saberial did not wisely pass this knowledge on to anyone. except for one person: arsenal.
chicken smuggling is a real crime in digfarts. the fine is a in-game week’s confinement in the bee fart sphere, plus a handwritten letter of apology to every single other player on the server for disappointing them and a pledge of loyalty to the poor chicken/s to protect them for life from any harm and neglect. killing a chicken results in a softban and a townwide funeral procession. killing multiple chickens is a permanent ban.
lalna and lalnable dabble in mad science, and for once, the two get along. they accidentally clone one another, forget to lock the doors and have to slaughter their runaway clones. the scene caused an investigation done by the thumb of truth and an official hearing. cloning isn’t against digfart’s laws, so lalna and lalnable clone everyone and preserve the bodies underground posed in entertaining dioramas. they charge five gold ingots for the tour, and a chest full of diamonds for a specific one to be constructed.
vox and their siblings build a giant monument to bebopvox. it goes as high as the sky and is perfectly symmetrical from top to bottom. they harvested materials and built it without hiring anyone, a testament to their diligence and determination. they even applied early for the building and statue permit. honeydew was unsettled when they all visited at once to seek the permit. this was because they all wore the same skin, just in different colours. only larry robert spoke. the rest stared at honeydew. it’s hard to say ‘no’ to that.
fyreuk run a history tavern, which charts the development and founding of digfarts and notable town achivements. they keep it up to date, and in exchange for music discs, will write ballads to honour said achievements.
lomadia logs in when nobody is on the server, and moves a single object to the left by one space, or switches items around, or leaves signs saying ‘i know what you did’, etc. so far, everyone is convinced that the server is haunted. vox pretends not to know about it.
martyn and minty run law enforcement, and swagger around town keeping the whole place in order. they have their fingers in every pie. their motto is ‘you do the crime, you do the time’ which is cheesy as hell but they’re actually pretty good at their job. they talk to vox to arrange trials and how long a ban should last if someone breaks the law multiple times.
sherlock refuses to join the server because he knows that people will bully him into playing their secretary, treasurer, errand boy, etc. he has a secret identity though, and logs in as ‘hulmes’. people play along with his pretend investigations since he actually writes pretty good newspaper articles as a result. fyreuk collect said articles too.
larry robert and their siblings are builders; the thumb of truth usually hires them to build things. the reason why larry robert and co can’t be left alone to build is beause they’ll keep building and never stop until it’s done. they crafted the entire road and railway system in one night, which sparked riots and fights due to everything needing names, all at once. honeydew put the permits into place as a result, which states that ‘only one party can build at any given time, and it can be completed at one’s leisure and has to be realistic so that fyreuk doesn’t cry over piecing the timeline together’.
bebopvox isn’t allowed on the server due to their irl identity but that doesn’t stop their kids sending them updates. the street surrounding te statue of them is called ‘ridge avenue.’
arsenal has to have someone watching him whenever he logs in since he has ‘the devil’s hands’. he runs a monthly auction house. he auctions off especially rare materials and custom goods needing a new owner. more importantly though, he’s the only official party who can sell the special chickens, which means that his auctions are a big event that nobody wants to miss.
the bloody bandits operate as blacksmiths attached to strife and parvis’ business. they’re expert miners, and for some reason, also operate the local cemetary. they note down how many times someone has died, and update the headstones. the cloning business caused a real hang-up as none of them could agree what to name the clones of lalna and lalnable.
i know i left some people out but the server is limited to frigate peeps to stop breaches into vox’s systems since the whole server relies so heavily on vox. there’s been jokes that they’re all playing in vox’s brain...which isn’t actually that far off the mark.
vox devotes quite a bit of processing power into maintaining and keeping the whole thing running smoothly. they’re unusually fond of what the frigate created, which possibly explains why any henious world breakage is treated as a in-game crime and punished accordingly.

Chapter 2 Masterlist

Phil had been expecting it all his life. In the last week alone, he’d been anticipating the order every time a servant entered his presence. Important meetings between kingdoms were happening, something to put an end to the tension and the conflict so everyone could finally exist in peace, and Phil doubted he’d escape the politics.
Expecting and anticipating were not the same thing as being prepared. Phil learned that quickly when the order came.
“Phil,” his brother said solemnly. He looked tired and worn down; Phil supposed that happened when you were king. “Ive arranged for you to marry the prince of Iridacia.”
Here it goes, I guess, Phil thought with a sigh. He bowed. “As you will it,” he said stiffly to the floor. He straightened, but his eyes remained trained on the floor.
You had no right to imagine anything else. This is your duty, he tried to tell himself.
“Hey,” Martyn said softly. He took a step closer to Phil and laid a hand on his shoulder.
Phil looked up, keeping his expression as neutral as possible.
Martyn smiled a small smile. “This is a good thing. It’s important for our kingdoms to show our cooperation now. It’ll bring peace and prosperity to both kingdoms.”
Peace and prosperity for everyone. That’s why you have to do this. It’s bigger than you.
Phil nodded, returning Martyn’s smile. “I know.”
Martyn’s hand slid around until he wrapped Phil in a tight hug. Phil reciprocated, burying his nose in Martyn’s neck.
“I’m sorry it has to be you. I know it’ll be hard, especially at first, and it’ll all be weird and foreign and new, but I think, one day, you’ll be happy,” Martyn murmured, trying to be as reassuring as possible. His hand rubbed soft circles on Phil’s back.
It wasn’t often that Phil got to see his brother Martyn as opposed to King Martyn, but he was grateful to his brother for understanding what he needed at that moment.
“I’ve been waiting for this my whole life,” Phil said quietly. He pulled back from the hug and put on a brave face and a smile. As much as he appreciated Martyn’s comforts, he knew that if he wasn’t careful with how he showed his feelings then Martyn was likely to call the whole thing off, and that would be much worse than marrying a foreign future king. “I’ll be alright. It’s all in the name of peace and prosperity.”
~~~~~~~~~~
After Phil left his brother to attend to his other kingly duties, he wandered a while, lost in thought. If he’d been back in his family’s palace in Cirrus, he’d have made his way to a quiet corner of the library to sit and think. But Martyn had insisted that Phil come to the negotiations with their rival kingdom, so he was forced to wander unknown territory.
The two kingdoms, Stratalary and Iridacia, had agreed to meet on neutral grounds in Fractalis, their mutual neighbouring kingdom. Years ago, their forefathers had fought a terrible war over a small patch of land to the west of both their kingdoms. Now, after decades of a bitter armistice, the kingdom of clouds and the kingdom of flowers had finally agreed to set aside their differences and sign an official treaty of cooperation and friendship.
Phil was unbelievably proud of Martyn for accomplishing it. Other Stratalarian kings had tried, but none succeeded. This would be an amazing step towards a better, calmer world for all their subjects. If that meant he had to marry a man he’d never met, so be it. It was worth it.
Or at least, that was what Phil was trying to convince himself as he crunched through the icy snow outside the palace at Chrystite.
Marrying for love was always a hopeless dream, he reminded himself, stuffing his freezing hands into his pockets as he approached a high balcony. It was a good dream, but hopeless. And that’s fine. I’ll still be happy. I’m always happy. I just have to find the good, as ever.
He sighed as he stared out into the surrounding mountains. It was beautiful here. Snow and ice covered every inch of the landscape, making everything shimmer. He looked down off the edge of the balcony, admiring the way the mountain dropped off steeply to the ground below. It was frightening, but Phil couldn’t pull himself away. The light cast sharp shadows that made the ground look like a white and blue collection of geometric shapes.
Reaching inside himself, he willed a wispy cloud to form in the abyss, then watched it dance in the wind and sun before dissipating. He did this several more times, before finally creating a stronger cloud closer to him and making it snow. He caught the flakes in his palms and watched as they quickly melted.
When I’m in Iridacia, I’ll play with clouds and help to water their flowers. I’ll show them how pretty clouds can be, and they’ll show me their prettiest flowers. Even if I never love the prince, I’ll fall in love with the land.
~~~~~~~~~~
The wedding was to take place in a month, which meant rushed preparations and many, many meetings and appointments for Phil.
His suit needed to be fitted and modified, he needed to be taught about the culture he was marrying into, he needed to know the schedule of the wedding and reception and who he was supposed to talk to and who he was to avoid at all costs.
A week before the wedding, Martyn talked him through the politics of the situation as Phil put on his wedding attire for one last tailoring check.
“You will marry the prince, of course, and then there will be the wedding reception. You must speak with the royal families this time,” Martyn commanded.
Phil squawked indignantly, turning from fastening his shirt to look at Martyn. “Hey, I always speak with the royal families! Every ball we go to, I spend hours talking to them!”
Martyn fixed him with a look that said, You’re a terrible liar. You’re not getting out of this.
“You won’t have a choice, anyway. You’re not to leave your husband’s side except for your dance with Mum and his dance with his mum, and he’s really going to speak with all the royals.” Martyn lifted his book of notes and instructions on the wedding, checking the contents and pretending not to notice Phil’s groan and pout.
Phil huffed when he realized Martyn wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of a reaction, then turned back to the mirror to continue dressing.
“Ah, yes, speaking of the dancing,” Martyn continued, “you will not be allowed to dance with anyone other than the prince or Mum all night. It’s apparently an Iridacian custom for the newlyweds to dance the night away with only each other as a sign of your devotion to your relationship.” He looked Phil in the eyes through the mirror. “That means that even when old Aunt Madelyne comes around expecting a dance, you have to turn her down, understand?”
Phil’s eyes widened. “How in the world am I supposed to do that? She’s so persistent!”
Martyn shrugged. “I’ll have someone warn the Iridacians so they know to look out for her. With some help, you and the prince can steer clear of her.”
Remembering past family celebrations, Phil grinned. “If we stay away from her, she won’t have the chance to tell me all about her cats’ genealogy for the millionth time!” His grin turned smug. “But you’ll still have to listen to her. I bet Mum will make you dance with her twice to make up for missing me.”
Martyn paled. “Oh, god.”
Phil cackled as he straightened his sleeves. His laughter died away in a sigh as he saw Martyn raise the notebook again through the mirror. “What else do I need to know?”
“Well, at the end of the reception, we will be signing the treaty. I will give a short speech about the honour this treaty will bring to Stratalary, then the current king of Iridacia will give a speech on his relief that the matter is finally being put to rest, then their prince will give a speech about his excitement for his future with you and his kingdom.”
“That doesn’t sound too bad. Maybe a bit boring, but nothing too intense,” Phil commented casually. He reached for the cape hanging off the back of a nearby chair but paused when he saw Martyn’s face in the mirror again. “What?” he asked nervously. “You’ve got that face you make when you have to say something but don’t want to say it. What’s wrong?”
Martyn hesitated, his face scrunched up in discomfort. “It’s- it’s just what comes after the reception that you won’t like. I don’t know that it will be bad, but it’ll be…” he trailed off and refused to look at Phil, instead choosing to fiddle with his notebook.
Phil set down the cape and turned to face Martyn fully. “Martyn. Just tell me. I’ll have to know eventually anyway,” he reasoned. He tried not to look as freaked out as he felt. If Martyn was this uncomfortable even telling Phil what it was, then how would Phil feel when he actually had to do whatever it was?
His brother let out a long sigh, then finally made eye contact with Phil. His expression melted from the concerned brother and into the responsible king. “After the reception, you and the prince will travel to the palace at Perennis, where you’ll be living from then on. It’s expected that you two will-” some of Martyn’s facade cracked, letting Phil see an awkward, apologetic expression, “- will consummate the marriage,” he finished.
Phil spluttered. “Excuse me?” he squeaked. So far, he hadn’t complained about any of it. Not the marriage, or the ceremony, or how he’d be sent away from friends and family. Martyn had enough to handle as it was and he didn’t need to feel guilty about taking control of Phil’s life. But this time he couldn’t restrain himself, letting his worry spill out of his mouth in a rush. “Consummate the marriage? I don’t even know the prince! Why is this necessary? It’s not like people are gonna know if we do or-” Phil’s already-pale face got even paler. “There won’t be people watching, right?”
“Oh, god, no,” Martyn reassured quickly, hands held out in a placating gesture. “No one will be in the room but you and the prince, so technically no one but the two of you will actually know if you do it or not. It’s another Iridacian custom that they want you to follow, but that’s between you and the prince.”
Phil’s breath caught back up to him at that. “Thank god. I don't really have to sleep with him, then.” He nodded once, somewhat reassured, and picked up the cape again to try it on.
Martyn’s uncomfortable face came back. “Yeah, probably not.”
Freezing again, Phil slowly looked up from the cape. “What do you mean ‘probably’?” he asked tentatively.
“Technically, the prince has an absurd amount of control over you and could order you to?” Martyn said quickly, fidgeting with his notebook again. “Not that he will- from what I understand, he’s actually really nice and at least a little uncomfortable with this arrangement, too, so it’ll probably be fine-”
“How much control will he have?” Phil whispered.
Martyn cringed and hesitated. “He can’t- like- physically control you, or anything, those are just myths-”
Phil took a step towards him. “I know that,” he said softly. He was a little offended at the implication, if he was being honest with himself. It seemed like Martyn didn’t know him at all if he thought Phil would subscribe to the rumours and stereotypes flying around about the Iridacians. “Please, Martyn. Just tell me.”
Martyn sighed and ran a hand over his face, suddenly looking more exhausted than Phil had realized he could be. “You’ll be completely under the control of the prince and the king. They’ll have to formally approve of everything you do and everywhere you go outside of the castle.”
“So,” Phil started, inhaling deeply. He stared blankly down at the cape still in his hands. “What you’re saying is that I’ll essentially be a prisoner of the Iridacian royalty?”
Solemnly, Martyn nodded. “I’m sorry, Phil. I wish it didn’t have to be like this.”
Phil shrugged. Pull it back, Phil. You have to be strong for Martyn. He forced himself to give Martyn a small smile, then raised the cape and put it on. He turned to the mirror. “How does it look?” he asked, straightening out the fastenings and running his hands down the white suit jacket.
Martyn looked like he wanted to say more about the arrangement, but he held himself back. “You look amazing,” he said. He walked up behind Phil and looked at the two of them in the mirror.
“Thanks,” Phil replied quietly. He scanned himself in the mirror, taking in the full extent of his wedding clothes.
He wore a white suit with shimmering silver embroidery and light grey patches, almost like his suit was meant to camouflage him into a cloud. The cape was just barely long enough to drag on the floor. Phil crinkled his nose at the realization that he’d likely get dirt in the soft white tufts at the end of the train.
“You’re missing one piece,” Martyn commented. He held the veil headpiece in his hand. Phil hadn’t noticed him pick it up, but he watched as Martyn delicately arranged it on his head.
Despite his displeasure at his arranged marriage, Phil did have to admit that the aesthetics of the wedding would be perfect. He wore a white flower crown that draped into a light green veil that covered his face and extended to his elbows. Combined with the white suit and cape, Phil’s wedding clothes would be a symbol of the union of the cultures of the two kingdoms.
“I can almost hear the wedding bells now,” Phil mumbled.
