Why Love A Human? by largestick

The first Personalities hit the market around 2027, if I recall correctly. They were a sort of medical gimmick, aimed mostly towards older folks who didn't have anyone to care for them. They could provide medical assistance and clean up and all that, but they were mainly there for companionship. The main selling point was that these Personalities, human-like software cased in a robot shell, could keep people company. It was a fine idea.

The tech kind of fizzled out until three years later when another version was released. The originals were just the wiring and metal skeleton covered by this clunky white plastic. The Personality 2.0 was a lot more humanlike, covered in a flesh-like synthetic material with an actual face that wasn't just painted on. It did land somewhere in the Uncanny Valley, though. The eyes would blink just a little too slow, and the skin didn't feel quite warm enough to the touch. But from a distance, you couldn't even tell the difference.

The biggest thing, I'd say, was the AI. They said it passed the Turing Test nine times out of ten.

Suddenly they were quite popular. Young people bought them, not just the elderly. Mostly they were used for housework, since you didn't have to pay them. I remember I had a friend who ordered one to be his butler. And, of course, there were the deviants who bought them as sextoys.

They became much more mainstream around the time the third version was released. They ironed out the kinks in the software and really perfected the shells. I mean, put a Personality next to a human and you couldn't tell the difference. Now these things were everywhere, and it wasn't just for sex or housekeeping. A large portion of the population was buying them because they were lonely and needed someone to talk to. If you didn't have any friends, you could simply go out and buy a few. They always knew what exactly to say, and they'd do anything you asked of them. They were the perfect companion.

It wasn't long at all before people began "dating" their Personalities. In fact, I'm surprised it took them so long. They came fully customizable, so you could literally craft the perfect partner. Caring, funny, sweet. Full lips, large breasts, twelve inch penis. Whatever you desired, you could have.

Then in 2037 they passed legislation that allowed for one to marry their Personality. It was around this time that they started abbreviating the name. They were just Persons now. This was the tipping point. I stopped seeing a lot of my friends, once they could afford enough People they never needed to leave the house. All the relationships they needed were right there with them. It didn't matter if you got fat or ghostly pale, your People didn't care what you looked like. Inter-human marriages declined almost entirely, but not many seemed to care. Who would settle for a flawed, brittle human when a Person could be your dream come true?

Human populations declined as well. The only flaw with a Person is that it could not reproduce. On the surface, nothing changed. The streets were still bustling, the cities still full. But that cute girl you saw checking out groceries? She wasn't real.

Around the time the 2060 Census was released, a small movement had formed calling for the dismantling of every Person in circulation. It never caught on, though. After all, they were asking us to kill our friends, our family. The people we loved, and the people who loved us. Or, atleast the people who did a convincing enough impression of love.

Our species fizzled out right under our noses, and we didn't even complain. We all aged out, but nobody was there to replace us. Soon, there were no more humans left, just the machines we built in our image. If any visitors were to come across Earth, they would find it still teeming with perfect specimens performing our duties, acting out our rituals. Walking along the streets that we once built, speaking languages that did not belong to them. Maintaining a planet that was once ours. Appearing just alive, but by all accounts empty.

Almost like an echo of a once great race.
