Postcards of Downtowner Motel, 129 N 8th St at Ogden – circa 70s, 80s. The motel was opened by local attorney Robert Cohen in '63. It has been owned and maintained by DTPLV since the 2010s.
When Cohen opened the Downtowner it was called the largest "apt-hotel" downtown with 93 rooms. The land was owned by the Pinjuv family and Cohen owned the motel, along with downtown’s MacDonald Hotel, Crest Hotel, and the Strip’s Vagabond/Center Strip Motel, totaling over 500 rooms in all.
In the late 70s he was indicted in a child prostitution ring. Failing to appear for arraignment on charges of sexual relations with a 14 year-old, Cohen fled the U.S. and sought asylum in Israel. He was disbarred by Nevada Supreme Court in '79. Brought back to Southern Nevada, he plead guilty to reduced charges of statutory rape and received three years probation. In the 80s he was found liable for robbery and assault to guests at Downtowner motel because he failed to provide security. At his Crest Hotel, carbon monoxide poisoning caused two deaths and send others to the hospital. Throughout it all he fought for and won the privilege of gaming license to maintain slot machines at his hotels.
Metro officer and future governor Joe Lombardo appeared on the television show COPS in '91 making an arrest at the motel.
“This place is nice now. When I was an EMS, we used to carry bodies out of here all the time.” – Nef, 2019

TAKE A CHANCE(Part 2)
Pairing: Phoebe Spengler/Spider-Woman!reader
Word count: 1.5k
Summary: After the events in Summerville, Phoebe, and others moved to New York, where they continued to catch ghosts and stuff, but in addition, a superhero appeared in the city and Phoebe got to meet her in person...
Y/N hastily picked up her backpack, then shot one of her webs into the nearest building. Not forgetting to take one last glance at Phoebe she pulled the web and swiftly swayed away, disappearing behind the skyscrapers.
After finally landing around the corner, she turned invisible and slowly sneaked up closer, assessing the situation. Robbery of a medium-sized grocery store, she watched 5 armed men slowly walking out of the store with cash and some stuff. Robberies weren't uncommon in New York, but then she noticed their clothes. Tracksuit mafia. The largest organized criminal group in the whole city. No matter how many got caught, there still was so many of them, but what's more, they often somehow managed to escape from jail. “Dumb, but tough” she noted to herself, before knocking the firearms out of the two of them. As expected, they started to look around chaotically and swearing, while looking for her. Seconds and with two precised hooks one of them lies unconscious. She sighed, as she became visible again and focused on her sixth sense, dodging a flurry of punches now.
Ten minutes passed and the remaining two dropped everything and just ran to their big van. “Retreating to base!” One of them shouted. Y/N perked up. Base...? No way she'd let them go and follow later, so she decided to catch them and beat its location out of the last conscious guy, which was pretty easy. After a while, he began to move around, trying to free himself from the web, as she noticed a small notebook falling out of his pocket. “Interesting...” she whispered, picking it up, then skimmed through the pages, before throwing it in her backpack for more detailed study later at home. Then, she nodded to herself and looked around, thinking where exactly this base was and knocking out the last guy as well, before leaving the scene for police.
///
After a while, her patrol was over. She landed in one of her trusted spots, well hidden from prying eyes, not so far from her home and got changed there. After examining herself for any wounds, as she didn't find any big or visible, Y/N peacefully made her way to her front door and walked in. Her parents were already back from work, so she greeted them and went straight to her room, locking it. She pulled out the contents of her backpack on the writing table and firstly checked the suit for any damage, then reloaded web shooters and put everything in her stash. Then some routine: have a dinner, clean the house, do the dishes.
While humming the song she was currently listening to Y/N thought about today and surely that base wasn't the only thing running through her mind. Y/N knew she had seen Phoebe before, but couldn't remember where, just until checking today's news. “No way...” She paused TV and took a closer look. Her eyes were sparkling now, as she was totally sure it's the same Phoebe.
///
The next morning didn't start good for Phoebe, she was forced to stay at home, while others went on a call again. She was home alone now and there was still plenty of time before their meeting in the park, so Phoebe decided to read a book and then visit Podcast and Dr. Ray at Ray's Occult Books.
///
She'd just hang out for a few hours, before going home. Time passed quickly and Phoebe thought she should probably head to the park now to don't be late. She didn't really know why, but in addition to her excitement, a hint of nervousness was following her. While walking to the same spot, she simultaneously thought about what they could talk about and how to answer possible questions.
The park was empty, as Phoebe's been sitting there alone for a while, she started to overthink why Y/N wasn't here yet. Maybe, she got ambushed and was hurt or even... dead, or simply Y/N just found her boring and didn't want to meet her ever again. These thoughts were bothering her, right until she spotted the silhouette fastly swinging towards her. Phoebe straightened her back and a small smile grew on her face. Y/N landed nearby and greeted Phoebe with hello. “Hope, I'm not too late” she sat on a free seat across from Phoebe. “There's really a lot of muggers today.” She babbled then. Phoebe waved a bit and looked at Y/N. “Hi! It's okay, so... Should we get started?” Y/N would just nod, as Phoebe moved one of her pawns. They were just chatting about everything, then Y/N brought up something she really wanted to ask her. “Y'know, I actually saw you on the news yesterday... You're a Ghostbuster, aren't you?” Phoebe looked up from the board and could feel Y/N's curious look through her mask. “Well, yes, I am.” she shrugged, remembering her situation now. “This is really cool!” Y/N exclaimed excitedly, leaning a little closer. “We're colleagues, you know? Well, sort of” Phoebe chuckled, but still kept looking at the board. “Yeah... But I'm not so sure about it now” her voice was still, however the mind was flooded. “Hm, why?” Y/N looked right at Phoebe, waiting for her to continue. Phoebe frozed a bit. The inexplicable urge to tell Y/N what happened, how much unfair it was and that her family didn't seem to care was somewhat overflowing, so she just let it happen.
///
Phoebe told everything, as she sighed and looked up at Y/N. There was some silence, until Y/N processed everything and then groaned with frustration “This is so dumb.” Y/N looked away and when she met Phoebe's awaiting glance, startled a bit. “I- I mean, well, Peck hates me as well. When I got bitten, I was 14 myself and what do you think he did?” she made a pause. “He made the police to issue a damn warrant for my arrest for a whole 2 months!” Phoebe chuckled at Y/N's gestures. “And what'd you do then?” She was genuinely happy at the thought, she might've found someone, who could really understand, moreover kind of relate to her. ”Well, I just took a chance every time I could and when the city needed me the most, I neutralised the Rhino guy” she remembered that day, like one of the toughest, even though she managed to weaken him and capture right before the police's arrival. “Take a chance” Phoebe kept this in mind. “You just gotta prove again and again what you're capable of and eventually Peck won't be able to reproach you. He's a hypocrite, who...” Phoebe chuckled. “Wants to get elected again.” They said at the same time and then giggled.
///
It's been some time and they ended up walking to Phoebe's place, whilst still chatting. Y/N could sense, that Phoebe was genuinely nice person, as they both seemed to have fun together as well, even though there was some awkwardness between them. Y/N thought she could start considering her as a friend. Maybe, she could even reveal her identity to her someday? She probably was getting ahead of herself, but for now, they were just having fun, as Phoebe made a small tour around the fire station and they were in her room now.
They heard several knocks and watched the door slightly opening, letting in some light. “Phoebe, we're back!” Phoebe's mom said, as she was standing in her room now. “Were you talking to someone?” She said, while looking around. “Um, no?” Phoebe glanced at the chair Y/N was sitting moments ago. “I was listening to an audiobook on my phone” She looked at her mom now. “Oh, okay... We were just about to cook the dinner. Are you okay with lasagna?” She was done looking around, as she just looked at Phoebe. “Yeah, it's okay” Phoebe was still mad at her, but hid it well, as she didn't want to argue just now. “Alright then... Bye” She left the room and closed the door behind. Phoebe started to look around and quietly called Y/N once, before finally looking up and seeing Y/N clinging onto the ceiling, as she watched her slowly getting down. “Phew” They both sighed with relief and looked at eachother. There was some awkward silence now. “Um, could you tell me what's the time?” Y/N spoke up first. “Oh, sure” Phoebe took her phone, checking the time. It was almost 7 p.m. Y/N perked up. “Oh, well, I actually have some places to be right now, so...” She pointed at the window, before turning around. “Wait!” Phoebe exclaimed, while standing up. Y/N turned back and looked at her questionly. “What did the Milky Way say to the Andromeda Galaxy?” Phoebe made a pause, as Y/N tilted her head a bit. “Nothing. There's no sound in space” Phoebe stood awkwardly, then she heard Y/N snorting softly under her mask, which made her smile herself. After a while she spoke up. “Heh, I got it. And I'd love to hear more of these sometime” She said, before opening the window and sitting on its frame, facing Phoebe's big grin. “Well, I'll- I'll be prepared” She bit her inner cheek. “Byeee” Y/N saluted and leaned back, disappearing from the sight. Phoebe then walked towards the window and saw her swaying away.

Tuesday August 14, 1962, a US Mail truck is driving from Cape Cod to Boston. Instead of carrying letters and packages, the truck is carrying money, picked up at banks on Cape Cod after a busy weekend and being transported to the Federal Reserve Bank in Boston. Instead of using a proper armoured car company, the banks opted to save a few bucks and send it in a mail truck. Someone with inside knowledge tipped off one of Boston’s crime kingpins, and planning for a heist began.
On route 3 near Plymouth Mass, the truck slowed down for what looked like a State Police roadblock. Unbeknownst to the postal workers the men in the State Police uniforms were robbers - unbeknownst until they pointed machine guns at them. Meanwhile, other members of the robbery gang were placing detour signs futher back, diverting any other traffic, and ensuring there were no witnesses to the robbery. The postal workers were tied up and blindfolded in the back of the truck and driven around for about 90 minutes, then the robbers unloaded the money bags and left. When the postal workers finally freed themselves, all the money - $1,551,277.00 - was gone. It was the largest cash robbery in USA history.
The case caused a sensation, the amount of money stolen would be over $15 million today. The case made headlines from coast to coast, even making the cover of Life magazine. The investigation was led by the US Postal Inspectors, and although there was lots of rumors there was little evidence.
Eventually suspects were identified, through underworld gossip, and although they were followed constantly, and their homes searched, no evidence could be found to prove they did it. Eventually, just before the 5 year statute of limitations was about expire, 4 men and 1 woman were indicted for the crime, with the rumor being that one of them agreed to turn State's evidence, but he disappeared before the trial, likely murdered, and without him the case fell apart and the other defendants were acquitted.
The money was never recovered.

As someone who happened to read the first chapter of “if i had words” the day it was published and fell in love with the story and writing and waited anxiously for updates, am SO happy with the posibility of a potential sequel. My heart could explode! For me to find “if i had words” was a total sign - it made my days for over a year . Thank you so much! 🩷
awww thank you!!! it was truly such a long journey, sometimes i cant believe how long it took to get it all out. it definitely feels like there's still a little more left <333
a little snippet for you?
I. THE MORE THINGS CHANGE, THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME.
For sixteen days, Max existed and Charles didn’t.
It was an eventful sixteen days. A train in Japan broke the speed record, only for a rocket-powered car to travel at triple its speed a few days later; the second largest cash robbery in history took place in a town Max would never go to; the Netherlands lost the Women’s Tennis Cup to France, a rocket was sent to Saturn and a few Nobel Prizes were awarded. Michael won the Japanese Grand Prix for Ferrari; Max’s dad came in 13th. The world was moving the fastest it ever would, just like it had in the month prior and the month after; just like it did every single second of every single day.
On the sixteenth of October Charles was born. Nothing else much happened that day. Max slept for eighteen hours and was aware of nothing. He slept in a bassinet by his mom’s bed; she was exhausted and slept when he did, and when he woke up crying she nursed him and told him a story about a race where she crashed her kart on top of a boy’s kart with the boy still inside it, and when she offered him a hand he shoved her, so she took off her helmet and beat him with it. Max fell asleep halfway through the story, and she drifted off not long after him. When Jos arrived from the airport that afternoon Sophie grumbled good-naturedly about having to share the bed again, and then she passed out for twelve hours straight.
Max was awake every three. Max was hungry, and he was usually too warm. His parents swaddled him a little too much; they were worried he would get cold. They would learn from this with Victoria, but Max had to suffer their fussing. His dad was nervous around him, like he was afraid Max would break if he held him wrong. When Max cried he shushed him frantically so that he wouldn’t wake Sophie, then took him to the sunroom with its big wood-framed sofas that had cushions that look like the carpeting in a movie theater. He held Max’s bottle for him while he played the recording of Suzuka that the team had given him on VHS.
A few countries away, Herve was frantically pulling cactus needles out of his hands so that he could hold his newborn. Charles was called Charlotte at that point, and was born small; he fit easily against his dad’s forearm, tiny and red. His hair was dark and fine; his eyes were blue and didn't focus on much of anything.
“She’s so small,” Lorenzo said in wonder. He was sitting on the bed beside Pascale, tucked into her shoulder. Pascale was exhausted, her temples beaded with sweat, but she didn’t push him away and he didn’t seem to mind that her skin was all clammy. Herve settled the bundle that was their child back into her arms and Pascale tucked it close, skin to skin.
Yes, Herve thought, Small. Too small. But their baby passed every test. Charles was born early like he was impatient about waiting any longer, and he came into the world screaming bloody murder. That was a good sign, the nurses said. He screamed so loudly Lorenzo winced and covered his ears all the way down the hall in the waiting room. In the delivery ward, the nurses beamed. What a healthy baby! Pascale let out a laugh that was bordering on maniacal.
In Brie, Jos was trying to show Max the television, where Michael’s car was flying past the timing tower. Max was a little cross-eyed. His eyes didn’t focus well either; he couldn’t see much with them yet. His hair was also dark and fine, and his eyes were also blue–newborn blue, fathomless indigo, not yet anything like his father’s. Jos looked at them sometimes and felt a strange detachment; a foreignness. His son had been alive for sixteen days, but Jos had only been present for nine of them. He wondered if that might explain it. He felt insane sometimes, looking at his son–looking at him in his arms, more thing than person, practically a different species with his curled fists and red skin and fathomless, unearthly eyes that focused on nothing in particular. He didn’t look like Jos; he didn’t really look like anyone. He didn’t look like a person at all. Jos wondered how long it would take for the feeling to fade, and for Max to look like his own flesh and blood.
Across Europe, Max’s soulmate smiled for the first time. The world turned faster and faster and faster.

Gothamites ::
Gotham is a melting pot of culture and all walks of life. From food to music to clothing, there's quite a number of "Little" versions of a country or culture for people to visit. And for larger places such as Chinatown, the people living there do not even need to speak a lick of English to survive, given the population is large enough to support only needing to know Mandarin and perhaps Cantonese alone.
Gothamites as a group are wary people and a little smarter than a typical city dweller. Unlike denizens from other cities, they place a lot of emphasis on their own safety. That means not going to known bad areas (East End), not taking risky shortcuts like unfamiliar alleyways, don't be out past midnight if you don't need to, etc etc. This is likely due to the rampant crime, primarily robbery. Though robbers will not typically target Gothamites individually, usually tourists.
Note: The typical Gothamite carries only up to $30-40 in hard cash at best. Likely, the most valuable thing on their person would be some jewelry, their cellphone, and/or a laptop.
As for socio-economic class, in Gotham, the poor come for the opportunities, the middle class come for the wages, and the upper class come for the lifestyle. Approximately 20% live below the poverty line, which is approximately $35000 in 2022 (average national is around 14%). This number is expected to get larger in 2023. Part of it is the wage stagnation and job availability. Unemployment rate is around 9%.
Even the largest employer of Gotham citizens Wayne Enterprises only employs around 150,000 people out of 20,000,000. And as most people who visit Gotham come to enjoy the lavish city lifestyle, most people who are employed work in the service industry, which can change drastically given whatever area a supervillain or crime gang decides to devastate one day.
Big Business ::
Almost every single major brand can be found in Gotham. The Diamond District houses Gucci, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, H&M, etc in one convenient area. There are also branches that can be found through the other districts as well. Industrial companies such as Wayne Enterprises or Reddick Industries also have their headquarters in Gotham.
As can be expected, the local government leans heavily towards Big Business. That is because it is corrupt. And it is public opinion that the people up top are corrupt and cannot do anything about it because they either cover their tracks well or will bring down too many people if they were to go down.
Gotham is not pro-labor. Police often will stand on the company side when it comes to dispersal of a strike. Locations have been shut down, just for something as little as a rumor of a union vote [ see Gotham Ironworkers Union vs Gallium, ruling in favor of Gallium [1]]. People overall are intimidated into not using their rights as a worker, given that the city will provide almost no help. And there are just many barely legal things that a company can do to make their workers lives miserable.
[ Reddick Industries vs Alan Thorn ] A Glassdoor Review that Alan Thorn, ex-engineer of Reddick Industries, discusses the "lack of safety protocols and appropriate training making it dangerous for employees to work in" had been in the public eye after Reddick Industries filed a libel lawsuit and successfully won the lawsuit for $3,000,000 after Gotham City Inspectors found no evidence of Alan Thorn's claims. An appeal was filed but canceled after Alan Thorn did not show up. Reddick Industries claims no foul play, only stating that Alan Thorn likely knew he was going to lose and decided to skip town to avoid paying the suit.
Crime ::
Gotham is known for its crime rate, being in the top ten for robbery, felony assault, sexual assault, grand larceny, and murder.
Robbery in Gotham usually does not involve the common citizen. Most robbery involves stealing from supermarkets or stores outside the Diamond District. When firearms are involved, they usually involve high value targets such as banks, large companies, or armored trucks. Part of the lack of citizen targeting is because citizens do not carry much out of precaution - and that there is an easy-to-dial 217 number for credit card cancellation in the city of Gotham. A lot of cellphones are also made by WayneTech and include a GPS tracker that could only be removed by breaking the phone. So it is not very cost-effective to target a Gotham citizen for robbery, not when there's a good number of tourists instead to target. So the only time when robbery targeting citizens happens if it's en-masse like in a train.
A lot of the felony assault and murder involves people in East End and some of the outer districts / Docks. Most of it is gang-on-gang violence, and the police will often ignore the most crime-infested areas or arrive there late when all the fighting is done. The reason why police can get away with this is because of a very strong police union, who insists that the average policeman is ill-equipped to fight a "supervillain" who could be laying a trap in the area. Unfortunately, there is precedence for their claim [ see Scarecrow Incident [2]].
The murder rate is usually normal for a city of this size. The only problem is when supervillains get involved - and then the murder rate spikes (similar to that meme about Spiders' Georg).
Note: In my honest opinion, the worst crime that happens involves companies exploiting their workers, and the workers not knowing their rights or scared to use them. Example: There are managers in some of the service industries that have convinced their waiters and other staff that they are entitled to a cut of the tip pool.

The Securitas Depot Robbery, executed on February 21, 2006, in Tonbridge, Kent, England, stands as one of the largest cash thefts in British history. This meticulously planned heist involved abduction, impersonation, and the intimidation of staff, resulting in the theft of approximately £53 million (about $92.5 million at the time). The robbery was notable not only for the sheer amount of cash stolen but also for the audacity and complexity of the operation. THE AUSTRALIAN NEW WAVE 4/4 : MONEY MOVERS (1978) DIRECTED BY BRUCE BERESFORD.
This is the fourth and last article of a series dedicated to the Australian new wave films of the 1970s. We are going to deal with a relatively unknown heist movie directed by an important director of the new wave: Bruce Beresford. Beresford signed a contract with the South Australian Film Corporation to make a couple of films in two years. This one is a violent, brutal and full of tension tense movie which takes place in a cash in transit company, whose owner is the victim of an anonymous letter announcing the forthcoming robbery of a 20 million dollar convoy. The story deals loosely with two real-life events, the 1970 Sydney Armoured Car Robbery and a 1970 incident involving money stolen from Metropolitan Security Services' offices by bandits impersonating policemen.
The film opens by to a tense and bloody heist and then we follow cash-in-transit agents building another heist against their own company. The film's originality lies in the fact that the robbery is concocted by the very people who are normally paid to prevent the hold-ups. And what would happen if the courtiers and the gangsters formed an alliance?
The movie is very much anti spectacular apart from the rare moments of extreme and frontal violence. There is an editing of absolute precision. It has a slow rhythm until the final explosion of blood and brutal violence. Money Movers also has a strong documentary value. The film was based on the 1972 novel The Money Movers by Devon Minchin, founder of Australia's largest armoured car/security company: the Metropolitan Security Services. The newspaper Le Monde reported that the prevention of Banditry services had privately screened this movie for their inspectors, which was then presented as a case study in their training courses.
This movie holds a social comment, very much like Paul Schrader did with his movie Blue Collar (where three workers of an automobile plant rob the union's cash office to settle their debts). We find out that these low-paid employees can pretend to be perfect thieves, but they will always be losers in the end.
Money Movers was released in Australia in early 1979 but failed badly at the Box Office. This is why it was not distributed in France until 1986, before having a modest video career. The French director and critic Nicolas Boukhrief must have seen it before making Le Convoyeur in 2004, which also takes place in a cash-in-transit company (called Vigilante), victim of three violent robberies in one year.

In 2006, the infamous Securitas robbery shook the nation as approximately £53 million vanished from their depot in Kent, marking it as the largest cash heist in British crime annals.
Back in 2006; the Securitas robbery… … around £53 million was stolen from their depot in Kent. The largest cash robbery in British crime history. Rumour had it, it was Sir Nigel Crisp, head honcho at the NHS, who was under the cosh from the Treasury, to, somehow get the service back into financial balance… otherwise it looked like Crisp was toast. He called for drastic action, ‘by noon on…

Black Hawk Colorado Casino Heist: Uncovering Covert Agency Tackling Casino Robberies
Black Hawk, Colorado, was shaken by a brazen casino theft, baffling authorities. It became apparent as the inquiry progressed that this was no ordinary robbery. The thieves were crafty, well-organized, and had insider knowledge of the casino's security procedures. The stakes were high, and the pressure was on for law enforcement to solve the case, which included millions of cash. In this account of avarice and duplicity, we follow the investigation into the Black Hawk, Colorado, casino heist with twists and turns.
Black Hawk Colorado Casino Heist
An obscure state law enforcement division is currently investigating its most significant case. This month, a cashier at the Monarch Casino in Black Hawk was arrested for stealing half a million dollars in cash. This is the highest theft from a casino in Colorado since gambling became legal in 1991. Colorado's Division of Gaming has sixty sworn agents conducting the inquiry. "While on duty, they have full authority as peace officers," Ron Kammerzell, the division's former head, said. "Part of their job is to patrol the casinos looking for criminal and regulatory violations." Moreover, 9NEWS Denver tweeted on Twitter about the heist at the Black Hawk Colorado Casino. $500k casino heist in Black Hawk is largest in Colorado history https://t.co/iaRuptw8AN — 9NEWS Denver (@9NEWS) March 28, 2023 Yet, the $500,000 Monarch theft is the most significant case ever encountered by agents from the Division of Gaming. A security officer at the JP McGills casino in Cripple Creek is suspected of taking $300,000 in 2003, according to a representative for the police. In 2019, a theft of $28,000 was the third-largest in the history of Black Hawk's illustrious Bonanza Casino. Three robbers in 1993 stole eight grand from the Gold Rush Casino in Cripple Creek, Colorado. According to Kammerzell, casino police often deal with customer complaints, check for underage gamblers, and enforce state gaming laws.
"If a patron has a dispute on a payout at a blackjack table or a dispute on a slot machine, they would come in and investigate it and decide the proper disposition," he said. Black Hawk Police Department Commander Greg Cooper stated that the Division of Gaming typically investigates offenses where the casino is the victim. He assured us that Black Hawk PD would follow up on any reports of wallet thefts at the slot machines. The Division of Gaming will deal with the situation if they leave credits on the slot machine and someone else tries to withdraw the money. According to the affidavit, Sabrina Eddy stole ten bricks of currency from the casino's vault on March 12 and fled the scene in a gold minivan. According to the affidavit, she stated a guy who identified himself as a casino executive urged her to take the money or the casino "would be in breach of contract." Later that morning, she claims, she saw a man she thought was an attorney in the hospital parking lot and gave him the money. In the Gilpin County Jail, Eddy is serving time for theft. She is still unattached. If you are interested in reading articles similar to the one you are currently reading, you can do so by going to TheActiveNews.com. Read the full article

Imagine waking up, putting on a badge, doing something like this, and having the audacity to think you're the "good guy". Jesse James and Al Capone could only dream of such a heist.
