Vendors at the Santo Tomas Fair in Donostia (source). On December 21, many Basque towns and cities host a winter market, celebrating local farmers. Donostia hosts one of the largest ones, with lots of different vendors selling both raw and prepared products.

A model Olentzero (source). Olentzero is often called the Basque Santa Claus; however, he is a bit different. As you may have discovered from the newspaper reviews that appeared in the month since this query was submitted, we did indeed have special holiday programming at the circus. We’ve added and tweaked things each year, but the aim has always been to create a sort of fantastical winter wonderland for our visitors to lose themselves in. With the new acreage and tent, we have been able to expand this vision in more recent years beyond what had initially just been a themed show at the former location. 

This past season, we removed the audience seating and turned the show into more of a carnival-style affair. 12 small stations were set up, forming a large oval, to depict the 12 Days of Christmas. Different acts took shifts performing at each station throughout the day, each with their own interpretation of the theme. For instance, Miss Wheeler had an aerial routine at Five Golden Rings that involved five small golden rings suspended at various heights and the voodoo twins did a lovely interpretative dance for Two Turtle Doves. This style of programming allowed us to include our entire roster and provided more variety than would fit in a normal night’s schedule. One entrance ticket allowed guests to stay all day if they desired, and see all the constantly changing sights. Stepping outside of our normally structured limits also gave the audience members a chance to experience our acts on a more intimate scale, approaching within arm’s distance rather than having to remain in their seats. 

In addition to performers, we also had roaming food and souvenir vendors selling seasonal treats, such as elaborately iced gingerbread elephants and peppermint candy floss beards. Outside the tent, the carousel was decorated in garlands of spruce and candles, as was the miniature locomotive, and the exotic-animal-drawn carriages were outfitted with velvet bows and jingle bells. The largest tree we could procure was placed in center ring and covered with an almost unimaginable amount of tinsel and ribbons. PT has a love of tinsel that borders on obsession, I’ve discovered. 

Mr. Barnum, as you may have guessed, took great delight in donning his own version of a Santa Claus outfit and sitting at the center of it all in a gilded sleigh. Yours truly might have been issued a similarly designed costume as Santa’s helper, which seemed the lesser of two evils when the other option was a rather voluminous Mrs. Claus gown. 

Although city ordinances have limited our parade allowance to twice a year, due to the need for increased sanitation and crowd patrols after each of them, reindeer sound like a wonderful addition. I am rather surprised we have not yet explored it, though I suppose it might come down to their practicality throughout the rest of the year. Still, it would definitely add to the seasonal charm of our Christmas village attraction and is something I shall look into for the future.

It was Christmas day, and no one was more excited than Milo Murphy and Amanda Lopez-Murphy.

 Because, well, they were sort of in a…

 “So, it’s time to find out who won our little bet!”, Milo called out, eyebrows wiggling as he looked at his wife on his side on their bed.

 Amanda, already turned too, taunted. “Came to see me win? I hope you’re dressed for my celebration, I’ve got a whole parade outside, waiting to declare my superiority!”

 Milo, already dressed, with a jumper that stated that he was “Number 1”, threw off the covers and jumped up. “I want to see you try!”

 Amanda got up too, fully dressed with a Jumper that pointed to his and said “Is me”, and grinned. “Bring it, Murphy!”

 They then kissed.

 “I love you”, she whispered flirtingly.

 “Yo también te quiero”, Milo whispered back with a wink.

 The two then ran off, like children on Christmas morning, ready for victory.

 Already up was the product of their happy union, Miguel Murphy, 9 years old and visibly confused as his parents shook him up awake.

 “Come on, Miguel! Wake up! It’s CHRISTMAS!”, Milo shouted, nudging his son awake.

 Amanda resorted to air horns. “It is equivocal that you WAKE UP, MIJO!”

 Miguel turned to his parents with an annoyed face. “Guys, a child needs 11 hours of sleep, and if my calculcations are correct…”

 “And they always are, light of my life!”, Amanda complimented.

 “Yes, well, then, it’s only been 10 hours. Please return in an hour before I am fully awake and forced to partake in “holiday joy” before my time.”, Miguel made air quotations before closing his eyes.

 Then, Murphy’s Law intervened, making his bedpost crack and run off.

 “CHRISTMAS, BABY!”, it cried, running down the stairs.

 Thankfully, his “Emergency Bed Post if Bed Post cracks and leaves to partake in “holiday joy” device worked perfectly!

 Miguel, grunting, rubbed his eyes and put his glasses on, which proceeded to wash his eyes with water.

“I’m up, I’m up…”, he regretfuly admitted, and fter much squeeing from his parents, he was taken downstairs to see his presents.

 Downstairs, Miguel immediately counted 5 presents, thanks to his A.I glasses “Assessing Familial Failings Like Endless Curse Kit” (or A.F.F.L.E.C.K for short, which is why it always spoke like Ben Affleck’s Batman).

 Miguel looked at the two humongus presents before him, towering over his small stature.

 They were so big, that even Milo and Amanda failed to reach.

 Miguel cleared his throat and adjusted A.F.F.L.E.C.K to translate it audibly to Czech, just to make it a little challenging.

 “Ahem. Well, if memory serves here, I requested 3 presents from Mr. Claus, clearly seen here. Does the jury see my exhibit as true?”

 Milo and Amanda nodded, still not noticing the point.

 Miguel then looked at the presents before him. “And these two other ones… Seem not to be on my list.”

 “…No, but we thought you deserved something extra, our love!”, Amanda said, pinching his cheek.

 After rubbing it, Miguel continued. “Well… There is no other reason?”

 Milo and Amanda gulped. He was on to them, but maybe they could fool him with an age old technique.

 “…What did you say?”

 Miguel face palmed and opened the presents at the same time, revealing the largest telescope in the world, that could see to the end of the universe and beyond (Milo) and a Time Period Broadcaster that showed you history as it happened, and in your very own living room (Amanda)!

 Milo and Amanda then began to brag.

 “I knew it! I knew he’d prefer a telescope! All the hints were pointing to it! Like when he said Telescope that one time! Was that a sneeze? Never mind, it was Telescope! I can’t WAIT to see you build it, son!”, Milo said, pride in his eyes.

 Amanda rolled hers. “Oh, come on! Is that really what he wanted? It’s clear that he wanted a chance to view history with no danger to himself! Our son is all about knowledge, but he wants to look to the past to improve the world! Didn’t you see him spell that out in his cereal?”

 “Actually, I was writing down a new symphony, but that’s besides the point.”, Miguel said, adding another 3 notes once he was done.

 Turning to his parents, he addressed them. “I am sure you want me to tell you who won…”

 “ME!”, Milo shouted, dancing in front of Amanda.

 “Oh, don’t you start trying to charm me! I’ll dance sexier!”, she said, mom dancing.

 Miguel sighed and turned on A.F.F.L.E.C.K.

 “WHAT IS THY BIDDING, MASTER?!”

 One loud air horn later, Miguel felt like he could actually talk to his parents.

Downtown Santa Claus Parade is a Go!

The parade was postponed last week due to water concerns. The decision to go was made early this morning. Weather conditions are supposed to be much better than last week.

Every year the parade attracts more than tens of thousands of spectators, the parade also involves approximately 100 entries and 5000 participants, as well as the work of more than 4500 volunteers each year. Together, this ensures that the parade is one of the busiest days of the year for many businesses downtown, and it also increases the awareness of all downtown businesses and raises the profile of the whole area.

Not only is the Downtown Christmas Parade the largest annual event in the province, but it is also now the largest food drive! In the spirit of giving, bring along a non-perishable food items or loonies and twoonies to the Parade in aid of the Community Food Sharing Association. Newfoundland Power employees will be walking along the Parade route to collect food items and donations. Please note, due to the extreme generosity of parade spectators and the overwhelming support for the CFSA food drive during the parade, the staff and volunteers from NL Power will begin collecting the food along the parade route at 11:45 am.

Kids, don’t forget to bring along to letters to Santa! Canada Post employees will be collecting them along the route and sending them to the North Pole! Address your letter to Santa Claus, North Pole, H0H 0H0.

Parking restrictions and street closures will be in effect beginning at 8:00 am on parade day. No parking along the parade route on Sunday after 8:00 am, and cars will be towed starting at 10:00 am, and possibly sooner. The Santa Shuttle is a free Park and Ride service that can bring you to and from the Downtown Christmas Parade. It begins at 10:00 am on a load-and-go basis from the Confederation Building parking lot and also from the parking lot of NL Housing off Columbus Drive. Buses departing from the Confederation Building will drop passengers to Bannerman Park. Buses departing NL Housing will drop passengers to Mile One Stadium.
