Early Game Tip/Guide for Stardew Valley
A friend of mine has been having trouble with the EARLY early game, so I wanted to help them out. This’ll cover the very early game, and then I’ll cover some tips for the FULL first year. I’ll be putting the whole thing under a read more so it isn’t cluttering ppl’s dashboards.
I’ll have a general idea of what to do the first 3 days or so, and then move to general tips/year 1 tips!
If this gets good reception, I might do other guides if people need them! Just ask and ye might receive sfdgfhfsdgfs.
I’ll also update this if I remember something else or get an idea from someone!
Day 1
First thing, of course, is get your parsnips planted and watered. Go to Pierre’s afterwards. With your 500g, buy 3 green beans, 3 potatoes, and 2 cauliflower. While cauliflower, overall, sells for more, invest in POTATOES in your first spring. You’ll sometimes get an extra potato when you harvest them, so you can get more money overall.
Make sure to get 50 wood for a chest as well. Put your extra tools away that you aren’t using for extra storage space.
After those are planted, go to the south (Cindersap Forest, where Marnie’s Ranch and Leah’s cabin are located). Go ALL the way south to the sewer exit at the bottom right of the area, over two small bridges connected by a tiny island with a single maple tree on it. The area down south will sometimes spawn spring onions. Check this area every day in spring in your first year. Spring onions don’t give you MUCH energy, but it’ll still be good in the long run.
Chop down as many trees as you can or pick up any foragables you see (check the beach as well for foragable shells) to try and reach level 1 foraging. Once you reach level 1, you can get tree seeds- acorns, pinecones, and maple seeds- and can craft field snacks.
Do NOT chop down the tree stumps right now unless they’re in the way! Tree stumps still spawn tree seeds, and chopping down stumps do NOT give you foraging experience! Only chopping the tops of the trees give you experience!
Check ALL the trash cans (just make sure a villager doesn’t see you bc they hate it), because sometimes food items or algae/seaweed pop out.
Don’t be afraid to eat foragables like dandelions, leeks, and horseradishes as well for energy.
Overall, if you can’t get enough energy-restoring items, don’t be afraid to go to bed early day 1.
Day 2
If you didn’t do it yesterday due to energy, go around your farm and scythe ALL the weeds/fiber you can. Sometimes they drop mixed seeds. Mixed seeds are random seeds you can plant. They’ll either give you parsnips, potatoes, or cauliflower seeds. But that means free seeds to plant! Easy profit. DO NOT CUT DOWN ALL YOUR TALL GRASS.
Willy will send you a letter. Go get the fishing rod, and fish in the ocean outside of Willy’s shop. Sell him any fish you get directly until about 2 pm or so, then go to Pierre’s with your new funds and get more seeds. Ideally potatoes, but if you wanna get a head start on an achievement, buy one or two of every seed- except fruit trees. You’ll need to sell one of every crop eventually. But you don’t have to worry about it right now if you don’t want to- you’ll have many more springs to come.
Check down south for spring onions. If you have level 1 foraging by now and can get tree seeds, shake the trees as you pass by. You get them more often by chopping them down, but shaking the trees can yield tree seeds for field snacks.
Spend today fishing, after that! Fish makes good money, and if you’re REALLY in a pinch you can eat the fish straight out of the ocean/river/lake. Or any seaweed/algae you fish up. Sometimes you’ll also fish up Joja Cola- a trash item you can consume for a little energy.
Day 3
It’s raining today, so you do NOT have to water! It always rains on Spring 3. If you’ve gotten money from fishing again after your initial stint, buy more seeds- you don’t need to plant them right away if the idea of all the watering is daunting, you can save them for when your first harvest is done and you need to replant.
If it’s a good luck day, spend the day clearing out your farm area around where you’re planting. Good luck days are the best for chopping trees because you’ll get more wood than on bad luck days.
If it’s a neutral or bad luck day, go fishing! You might fish up trash more often, but you’ll still be getting fish to sell! You can either ocean fish and sell to Willy directly, OR try at the mountain lake next to Robin’s house. Largemouth Bass are GOOD money early game.
No matter what you do, remember to check for spring onions!
General Early Game Tips
Check the tv EVERY day! It’ll give you tips, recipes, and you can check your daily luck and the next day’s forecast.
Build a Silo BEFORE building a coop or a barn! You’ll get a quest to build a coop after your first harvest. Do NOT do it right away. Get a SILO first, and then scythe up any grass on your farm! Don’t scythe all your grass (the tall grass, not the weeds that give you fiber/seeds) before you get a silo, because hay from Marnie is expensive at 50g per piece of hay.
Advanced tip for the previous one: Build ONE silo, and put a chest next to the silo. Use the empty barn/coop once you have it to grab ALL the hay from your silo and place it in the chest. Continue to scythe your grass and get hay, repeating the emptying process until all your grass is gone. That way you have a stock of hay before you get animals.
Once you have a steady supply of food and the mines are open, go to the mines as OFTEN as possible. If the day is neutral, good, or great luck, go mining! You’ll wanna get a head start on resources, and selling gems is good early game.
Wait for a rainy day to upgrade your watering can! Upgrading your tools takes two days: the day you give it to him, and the day after. Check the tv for when the next day is raining, and THEN upgrade your can.
Do NOT build the first sprinklers you get. Once you reach level 2 farming, you unlock the sprinkler crafting recipe. The basic sprinkler only waters 4 spaces, and it is a WASTE of copper and iron. Wait for the quality sprinkler recipe at level 6. It’s tedious to water, I know, but the quality sprinkler waters the 8 surrounding tiles vs the basic’s 4. A better use of materials.
Keep at least 1 to 5 of everything! You may end up with a lot of chests, but keeping a lot of things is REALLY handy. You’ll get little fetch quests from the bulletin board outside of Pierre’s shop often, and keeping a backlog of items helps with completing them- which gets you money and friendship points with the villager in question. This includes crops, fish, and mining materials like quartz and gems. I’d also advise keeping minerals from geodes after donating one of them to Gunther, as some are good gifts while others are used for fish pond requests.
Don’t forget animal tools! Marnie sells a bucket for milking cows, shears for shearing sheep, and heaters for your barns/coops! It gets real cold in winter, so animals need a heater placed in their respective buildings. Put one in every animal building you have- you only need one, don’t worry!
Make wild seeds! Wild seeds produce foragables for their respective seasons. Sell the spring, summer, and fall seed packets instead of growing them. The spring, summer, and fall wild seed packets sell for MORE than if you grew the seeds and sold the foragable items. Do NOT sell the winter seed packets!
General Year 1 Tips
Try and get level 4 foraging before Spring 15! You’ll get a passive perk that just says “+1 Berry harvesting”. From Spring 15 to 18, there are salmonberries in the bushes around Pelican Town. Whether you have level 4 foraging or not, collect these berries! It’ll help a LOT if you get two per bush, but if you check every single day you’ll get a lot of berries no matter what your foraging level is. They don’t give a LOT of energy/health, but because of the quantity you’ll get you’ll be fine.
Fish at the mountain lake when you have downtime! Largemouth bass are VERY valuable early game, if a bit tricky to catch.
Use low profit crops for energy! If you have extra parsnips from spring, you can either turn them into pickles later or keep them for energy/health.
Mushrooms or Bats! After a certain amount of profit is obtained, Demetrius will come to you and ask to use your farm’s little cave for an experiment. He’ll ask to either use it to cultivate mushrooms or invite a species of fruit bat to the cave. Mushrooms are produced every day, and you’ll get a random assortment of every mushroom species available (although their rarity plays a factor in how often they appear). Fruit bats leave you a slow supply of fruit- usually foraged berries, but sometimes fruit tree fruit as well such as apples, oranges, and cherries. Mushrooms are generally more valuable and common mushrooms provide good energy, while fruit bats are good for artisan goods and for gifts as fruit tree fruits are universally liked by everyone.
In your first summer, invest in Blueberries! In your first fall, invest in Cranberries! Both blueberries and cranberries give multiple harvests, and multiple berries per harvest. That means they’ll keep producing AND give you 3 berries per harvest. While the melon and pumpkin sell for more, you can get a few hundred berries within one season- upwards of a thousand if you plant a Lot like I do.
In the beginning of summer, you’ll unlock the bath house. The bath house is a hot spring building to the north in the mountains, initially blocked by boulders. You can sit in the water to regain energy!
Plant tree seeds outside of the bath house area. ALL the dirt around the bath house can have tree seeds planted. You’ll most likely get a bunch of pinecones, as there’s an abundance of pine trees both on your farm and in Cindersap Forest. Plant as many as you can, and let them grow to make a wood farm. I can get a full stack of wood because of how many trees you can plant.
Save some crops to sell at the END of a season! If you’re hurting for money, split your current harvest in half if you can and sell half. Put the other half away in a chest (preferably next to the shipping bin) to save for the final day in the season. That way you can be SURE you’ll have a decent amount to spend at the beginning of the next season.
Work on preserves jars and kegs asap, once you unlock their recipes. Preserves jars make jelly (from fruit), pickles (from veggies), aged roe (from fish eggs), and caviar (from sturgeon eggs). Kegs make wine (from fruit), beer (wheat), pale ale (hops), juice (veggies), and mead (honey). Buy some hops in summer and save them for when you get kegs! Hops also produce EVERY day, so be prepared for a backlog of hops!
Try and get animals in summer! Save spring for bolstering your wallet and equipment. Don’t worry about upgrading your coop/barn all the way right now, just get started on animals because animal products are very good your first year.
Upgrade things in winter! This can mean tools, or buildings! By winter you should have a GOOD bit of money and resources. Upgrade your tools as much as you can (you can do a lot of mining for ore in winter), and upgrade any coops/barns you have. You don’t HAVE to upgrade your house yet if you don’t want to/don’t plan on getting married anytime soon so, as you should have salmonberries still if you managed to collect a lot, cooking isn’t a necessity. Mushrooms from the cave or fruit from the bats could also help here.
Buy animals in winter! If you can upgrade your coop/barn, get animals now while they don’t need to go outside. It’s a good idea to get pigs now if you can, as they take a long time to grow. That way they can come out fully grown and ready to get you truffles.
Winter seeds are good money! Every few levels, you’ll be able to craft wild seeds for each respective season. The winter seeds sell for more than just their packets alone, so grow them if you can! You can multiply the crop each time you harvest them most likely, so you can make a lot of money off of the foragables.
Mine and fish! Since you don’t have too much to do in winter, use the time to fish and mine for extra money and resources!

Fly Tying Friday: The Foam Beetle - Panfish Candy!
For many anglers, dry fly fishing represents the pinnacle of the sport. There are numerous reasons why topwater fishing is loved by so many. For starters, you can see the take of the fish and surface eats are often exciting. In warmwater environments, a fly floating on the surface can avoid fouling when fishing weed-filled waters, making it the only type of fly that you can use in some conditions. I love fishing dries and will do it whenever conditions are suitable for it. Nothing beats the sights and sounds of a big bluegill taking a fly on top!
Visually observing the strike takes a lot of guesswork out of hooking a fish but is not always that easy. Timing the strike, near misses, and refusals can still perplex anglers. Improper timing in setting the hook is probably the number one reason anglers miss topwater eats. You must resist the urge to set the hook the very second you see the take. Allow a second or two to pass before setting the hook. Your hook-up ratio will improve if you allow the fish to turn and head down with the fly before setting the hook. But wait too long and the fish will reject the fly and you are out of business. Over time you seem to develop a sixth sense in regards to how long to wait before setting the hook on a fish.
Whenever you are fishing a floating fly you should be ready to react to a hit the moment the fly hits the water. This means managing loose line at all times, as any slack will reduce your effectiveness in setting the hook. When setting the hook on fish like bluegills and other sunfish simply raising the rod tip will usually do the job. For tough-mouthed fish like largemouth bass, I will usually set the hook using a strip strike. Simply lifting the rod will not move the fly enough to penetrate the hard mouth. Instead of lifting the rod tip, you set the hook with a series of strips, with the rod tip pointed at the fish or simultaneously sweeping to the side.
The take of a fly off the water's surface can be an imperceptible sip, a violent explosion, or something in between the two. Any way they come, surface hits are exciting and will keep you coming back for more.
Few fish share the bluegill's affinity to eat on the surface. This combination of fishing a dry fly and a fish that can't resist eating it is what makes fly fishing for panfish so enjoyable. But what fly should you choose? The fly fisher who chases panfish has a mind-numbing variety of flies to choose from. Traditional dry flies, hair bugs, poppers, and foam bugs will all work if the fish are looking up.
Flies tied with foam offer some advantages over other materials. Keeping a dry fly floating, especially after catching a few fish, can be a problem. A properly constructed foam pattern goes a long way to solving this issue. In addition, cleaning off fish slime and re-applying floatant is usually unnecessary with foam flies.
While foam may not be the ideal material to tie a delicate mayfly or caddisfly, it does a fine job on many terrestrial patterns, particularly beetles. There are somewhere around 400,000 species of beetles crawling around on this planet. In addition, beetles constitute almost 40% of known insect life and 25% of all animal life! So chances are pretty good that a few are going to end up in the water and ultimately in a belly of a fish.
There are many effective foam patterns for panfish, including my own Triangle Bug, but few flies can match a foam beetle's fish-catching charm. A foam beetle tied with a chunky body made from thick closed-cell foam lands on the water with a fish-attracting splat, just like the actual insect. If there is are any bluegills in the vicinity, they are unlikely to resist grabbing it.
Tying effective beetle patterns
Most beetle patterns are simple to tie. A simple but effective beetle imitation can be constructed by lashing a foam strip to a hook and doing nothing more. However, my love for fly tying compels me to do a little extra work. Adding an underbody, some legs, and maybe an indicator of hi-viz foam or yarn (to aid in finding the flush floating fly) usually does the trick for me.
I prefer to use a thicker foam for my beetle patterns. While 2mm foam is adequate for designs like the Triangle Bug, flies like beetle patterns benefit from a beefier body. I prefer to use foam like Hareline's 3mm, the 4.5mm foam from Semperfli, or bi-color laminated foam on my beetles. A laminated foam allows you to use thicker foam with two colors. One side to present to the fish and brighter color to allow the angler to see it clearly on the water. Regardless of which type you choose the thicker foam gives the flies that all-important splat when they hit the water and keeps them floating all day long without any assistance.
To aid in compressing the thicker foam without cutting through it use heavier thread. I will not use anything lighter than 6/0 or 140 denier when working with foam. When compressing or tieing down the foam, start with light wraps and apply more pressure with each consecutive wrap. This will collapse the foam without cutting through it. This method is a useful technique, particularly when working with thicker foam.
You can keep your underbody simple (thread wraps can suffice), but I like to add a body of peacock herl, dubbing, Straggle String, or floating poly yarn under the foam shell of my beetle patterns. An underbody can add additional movement or a little flash to your fly, increasing its fish catching ability. While many of the beetles in my trout boxes are tied without legs, I can't resist adding legs to my beetle patterns that I will fish in warmwater. While you can find more complicated beetle patterns to tie, the simple design described at the end of this article is all you need to fool big bluegills.
Tips for fishing beetle patterns
My preferred method for fishing beetle patterns in warm water is to find a shoreline thick with overhanging trees, preferably shaded. I will then cast my beetle pattern back under the branches as far as I can. A chunky beetle pattern works well for a technique I call skip casting. A skip cast lets you bounce the fly off the water's surface and skip it back under cover; it is a valuable technique for fishing structures like overhanging trees and docks. You accomplish this by keeping your cast low and parallel to the surface of the water. I usually add a little haul on the forward casting stroke to accelerate the line and make the fly skip easier.
Once the fly hits the water, let it sit for a while without disturbing it. Beetles are feeble swimmers and do not move much. The key is to animate the fly without dragging it across the surface of the water. You do this by applying very subtle twitches to your fly line. Keep your rod tip low to the water and keep as much line on the water as possible. By doing this, it can help you to keep moving the fly too aggressively. Allowing the fly to sit motionless is usually more effective than actively moving it. Rather than fishing the fly all the way back to you, pick up and present it again if a fish does not grab it after a few twitches.
I have also found fishing a beetle pattern over open water at sundown or after dark an effective technique. Many species of beetles are nocturnal and become active as the sun sinks below the horizon. These clumsy fliers often head out over open water and end up in the drink. Having a big June Bug fly into your hair or down your shirt while fishing after dark while out in a boat or kayak emphasizes the fact that beetles spend time out over open water at night!
Beetles are a staple terrestrial pattern that works well in warm and cold water. If you don't have a few beetle patterns in panfish fly boxes, you are missing out on a tremendous topwater pattern. So tie some up and give them a try. You won't be disappointed.
Pattern Recipe:
Hook: Firehole 618 size 14-8 (the #618 is my go-to hook for many foam patterns)
Body: Sheet foam cut in a strip slightly wider than the hook gap of the hook you are using. Try 3mm, 4.5mm, or laminated foam for a thicker body that produces the all-important SPLAT!
Underbody: You have a few choices here. you can keep it simple with thread alone or add a body of dubbing, peacock herl, Straggle String/Straggle Legs, or Floating Poly Yarn.
Legs: Round rubber or silicon.
Indicator: Hi-vis 1mm foam
If you need materials to tie this pattern please consider purchasing them from our shop. You can use the links in the post or click the button below to go to our store. Thank you for your support!

Gone Fishin’ - Fish Anywhere, Anytime
Doesn't the game already have fishing? Yes. However the games fishing mechanic can be quite gated. This fishing station is intended to allow a sim to catch a variety of fish based on their body skill rather than their badge skill/season/bait used. Of course all fishers have good days and bad days so they may also pull up some trash or some treasure along with the intended catch.
The fishing station works independent of the Season's EP structure in regards to fishing. Sims can catch any fish in any season with any bait, provided a sim has the correct body skill to catch that kind of fish. No fishing badges are required. Fishing holes do not freeze in winter because ice fishing is a real thing and viable food source. Sims will continue to fish until they run out of bait, their motives drop, or the action is canceled. Children through elders may fish at fishing hole, as may visitors to a lot. Multiple sims can fish at one fishing spot. The fishing spot take the form of a sign, much like one of the crop sign, though it has an invisible recolor to hide it. It can be found in Hobbies > Recreation for 0.
Sims can catch one of 10 items from the fishing hole. These include all of the Maxis Fish (Blue Catfish, Jumbo Blue Catfish, Golden Trout, Rainbow Trout, Jumbo Rainbow Trout, Large Mouth Bass, Jumbo Large Mouth Bass), a Boot, a Coin Pouch, and a Treasure Chest. Each fish can be stocked in the fridge for food points, sold for profit, or saved for use in another crafting station. Trash and treasure items can be sold for profit or disposed of. How are the Sun&Moon fish different from the game fish? They have all been assigned different food point based on size and rarity.
The Fishing Catches are as follows:
• 0-3 Body Skill = Boots, Largemouth Bass
• 4-7 Body Skill = Lower chances of previous rewards, Blue Catfish, Rainbow Trout, Coin Pouch.
• 8-10 Body Skill = Lower chances of previous rewards, Jumbo Largemouth Bass, Jumbo Blue Catfish, Golden Trout, Treasure Chest.
To catch fish at the fishing spot, a sim must first acquire worm bait. Worm bait can be obtained by looking under rocks and digging in the dirt. Bait can be dug up by children through elders. They can dig for 1, 5, 10, or 20 worms at a time. Each cast of the rod requires a worm. If a sim catches a boot, coin pouch, or treasure chest they get to reuse their worm. The Bait Rock can be found in Hobbies > Recreation for 0 and comes with an invisible recolor.
Autonomous Fishing: If a sim has a Fishing Rod and Worm Bait in their inventory, they can autonomously fish at any fishing spot. The auto-rod can be found in Hobbies > Recreation for $15.
Pole Sets: Only one style of pole may be used with fishing holes. Provided are two sets, and you must only pick one and delete the other set.
Fish Fillet Knife: Using this fish filleting knife, a sim can cut up any fish into equal serving fillet portions. Regular fish general 6 portions (three per side of the fish) and Jumbo/Golden versions grand an additional portion per side for 8 portions. These count as food points and may be sold or used in recipes. It can be found in Appliances > Small Appliances for $10.
Packing Stand and Empty Crates Converters:Using either the fish stand or the crate converters, Sims can convert 12 of any type of fish into a crate of fish. Each crate is worth 25 food points to stock fridges with. Alternately the crates themselves can be unpacked once more into 12 individual fish.
Ice Fishing Hole: This is a deco item that can be placed with a Fishing Spot to create an ice fishing feel. Place this 3 tiles in front of and 1 tiles to the right of the fishing spot and sims will look as if they are pulling fish out of the ice hole. Need to use moveObjects on to get it to pop properly onto a frozen water source. (May get wonky looking if more than one sim wants to fish as any joining sims will not line up with the deco). Find it in Hobbies > Recreation for 0.
Fishing Rod Rack: A rack to hold inventory fishing rods when not in use or for sale in shops. Each rack holds 3 rods, and comes in 6 select Pooklet colors. Can be found in Surfaces > Shelves for $5.
Fishing Crate Display: This probably looks familiar. Despite it being the mesh and texture from Beos’ Innsmouth set, it has all been tweaked. Now when a crate is placed on the display and the M key pressed, the crate will rotate to properly sit on the display. Can be found in Surfaces > Shelves for $5. Has the original color, dannimaree’s recolors, and some additional new Pooklet shades.

Another surprisingly sane recipe. Nutmeg can be used in place of shlepping out to the shops and having Walmart workers stare at you like a largemouth bass as they point you to the pepper spray when you ask for mace. Acorn squash can also be used in the apple-squash bake.
Squash can also be baked like potatoes instead of boiled.

Farm Report: A new friend in the sewers
First day of winter. It's cold outside. My wife is complaining, despite the roaring fire in the fireplace.
I probably won't get any more flute serenades while I work till the spring. Not that I have much work to do on the farm right now.
I do have some planting to do. During the fall I used the seed maker to produce Winter Seeds from winter roots. Now I'll be planting these around the sprinklers, and growing some assorted winter forage plants.
It's only using up a tiny part of my usual farm area. And I won't need to pay any attention to these till they're ready to harvest.
The animals have given me a good selection of eggs, but no wool or rabbit's feet today.
With my farm chores over before noon, it's time to plan the rest of the day. Fishing, mines, or errands around the town? I check with the spirits, and their mood is favorable.
I decide I'll try for the fish first, and then hit the mines if I have time. The sturgeon can only be caught before 7pm, but I can stay at the mines as late as I want, so long as I get home on time.
Rumor has it that the sturgeon is most commonly found near the old sunken log. I bait my rod, eat my Dish o' The Sea, and cast.
I wouldn't say it was easy, because it wasn't. This was one of the hardest catches I've ever made. Even with my iridium rod, trap bobber, high skill level and food buff, it nearly escaped from me several times. But now it's caught, and with enough time to head for the mines and try for the next checkpoint.
Starting out from level 105. Even with the favor of the spirits, this place is full of monsters.
I'm chugging salmonberries nearly constantly to keep my health up. This is why I harvested so many in the spring.
Two of these little armored dudes at once! And this is a monster-infested level, where the stairs down won't appear until every monster is dead.
Killing one of those shadow brutes. They're not too hard, they don't have ranged weapons and don't move quickly. You just have to let them walk up to you and then start madly swinging the sword at just the right moment.
Last monster dead, and I can proceed downward.
I rush down through several other levels, taking the ladder down as soon as it's revealed, and make it to level 110. What will my reward for this level be?
Space Boots? Hey, they match my wife's hair. Nifty.
On the way back home, I stop at the community center to drop off the Sturgeon.
Once again, the little gumdrop spirits appear. And once again, I appear to be completely surprised. At this point I'm just faking it for their sake - I know what to expect, but they like to see me look amazed when they appear.
Awww. I'm going to miss you, little gumdrop buddies.
And now they've repaired the fishtank. I only have one room to complete, the bulletin board, and one item needed for that. It's all up to my rabbits now.
Getting home quite late. My wife is already long asleep by the time I get in. I slip into bed quietly, trying not to disturb her.
As we sleep, the spirits are doing ... something ... near the bridge that leads to the mines.
I can craft a slime incubator now! I'm not sure if that's something I actually want to craft.
The next morning, I wake to the smell of cooking. It's not breakfast, however. Abby has made me a plate of fried mushrooms to take with me when I head to the caves.
This is great. Fried mushrooms is one of the better foods to take into the mines. It restores a lot of health and energy, and also grants a combat buff. I've actually been making these and bringing them along with me to the mines for ages. It's the perfect gift. I love my adventurer wife so much.
The spirits are also pleased. With the blessings of both the spirits and my wife, I'm heading to the mines.
Starting at the level 110 checkpoint I reached yesterday. Here we go.
Almost immediately in level 111, I see the red mist effect that indicates that a swarm of flying enemies is approaching. Red bats, probably at least a dozen, from all different directions.
Bring it on bats! I'm not scared of you! I'm full of coffee and fried mushrooms and I know my wife loves me!
Bats defeated, end of level reached, and I have a backpack full of bat wings.
Level 112 has shadow brutes and slimes, but I power through it.
Level 113 is strange. A small dungeon with a single, star-shaped room, lots of mushrooms and quartz, and quite a few monsters. I grab the gems and mushrooms and then take the stairs.
I reach the level 115 checkpoint, and decide that's enough pressing my luck for today. Time to head home. I can do the last 5 levels some other day.
As I step outside, I see Willy looking puzzled at the cliff face. Wasn't this spot previously blocked by a glittering boulder?
The river is flowing more freely now, and debris has been washed out of the mountain into the lake.
It's not just rock, there are nuggets of gold among the pebbles now.
It means another method of getting ore has been unlocked, reducing my reliance on the mines.
Willie gives me a spare pan he has, and instructs me on how to use it.
It's not much, and not available very often, but something else to do while I'm on my way to or from the mines.
My pal Linus wants a Red Snapper. Of course I'm going to give him one, after all Linus sent me that Largemouth Bass that I used to make dinner for Jodi for. I owe him, and besides, he's a great friend of mine.
It's funny, Jodi. My great dream has been to build my own family and life here. I've never been happier than when Abigail married me and moved in, and I'm very much looking forward to when we have a baby of our own. Then again, your family includes Sam, and I can see how that would want to make anyone run away and live on their own.
One red mullet, good quality, that I caught while trying to catch that tilapia. Linus will love this.
Delivered straight to him in his tent. Linus, you are a good person, and you don't deserve the crap that people put you though in this town. Anything you need, just ask.
Wednesday the 3rd, and my wife is inviting me to just stay home and cuddle. I'm sorely tempted.
This will have to do for now. I do have work to do.
Disappointed look at the rabbits. Why for you guys no shed feet? This is the last thing I need for the community center!
Though the rabbits may be slackers, I am getting a lot of eggs from my chickens and ducks. In addition to using them in recipes, I can use them to may mayonnaise, which is also useful in recipes and sells for more than just the eggs do.
I'm putting it in my increasingly crowded food-processing shed.
I will not be going to the mines today, but I made enough progress over the last few days that I'm not in a rush. I have errands to do anyway.
After processing some geodes, I'm having Clint upgrade my watering can to gold quality. I really don't need it during the winter, and I have the money and gold bars to spare.
Elliott is really not in a good mood today.
He has really not taken my getting married well. Honestly, I didn't even think he and I were all that close, but apparently he took my encouragement on his book as some kind of grand romantic gesture and feels all alone and betrayed now.
I'd say clothes are important in the winter, Haley. It's kind of cold out right now. But if you want to run around without clothes, there aren't many people who will object.
There is one more thing I can buy with my excess money: a furniture catalogue! This will allow me to instantly summon any piece of furniture at home for free. It's not cheap, but once I have it, I can redecorate my home at will at any time. I'll be poor again after this, but I don't expect that to last.
Thursday the 4th. Abby is asking me to bring her something tasty back from the mines. Aww, are you already getting tired of the amethysts from the crystalarium? I suppose those would all start to taste the same after a while.
I won't be headed to the mines today, however. Or at least, if I do, I'll stick to the easy levels. I do have some other errands to do first anyway.
But when I step outside, someone I don't immediately recognize is standing in my way.
Oh, it's the museum guy. I've only ever seen him behind the counter in the museum. I didn't even know he had a backsprite.
He's really pleased with all the items I've dropped off at the museum.
And as recognition for what I've done, he's giving me a rusty old key that's been lying around for a century. I think I know what that's for. I remember, long ago, when I first came to this town, seeing two children standing outside a sewer grate and talking. They said that it was locked, but speculated that a rusty key that the museum guy had with him could open it. I dismissed it at the time, but maybe this is that key? I figure it's worth a try.
The winter seeds are starting to sprout. Each one will grow into a random winter forage plant. I'm hoping for mostly crystal fruit, it can be made into valuable wine.
Speaking of valuable wine, another batch of pumpkin juice is ready.
On the way out, I stop at the hat mouse. Yes, the hat mouse. He's hanging out in this abandoned house, selling hats, and his stock has been increasing gradually as I unlock new hats by meeting various in-game achievements.
I'm trying on a 'watermelon band'. It reminds me of the cute hair band that Abigail wears. I'm not sure if it's really me.
It appears that the rusty key is indeed the one that unlocks this grate.
Ugh. This is disgusting. Why am I doing this?
There's not too much down here, it seems.
Around the corner, I spot one of those Shadow Brutes! Here, outside of the mines? I wasn't expecting this, but I do have my sword on me. I had better take care of this.
The normal tactic for killing these is to wait for them to approach, and then slash them when they're just within range. But this one doesn't seem to be approaching me.
Hello, sir? Shouldn't you be trying to kill me now?
Oh. You talk. Well, don't I feel like an asshole now. Uh, sorry for all the other shadows I've killed. I hope they weren't friends of yours. In my defense, they did try to kill me, but then again, I'm pretty sure I was invading their homes at the time.
He's a storekeeper! An unusual one, far from the others of his kind.
He has a Stardrop for sale - I'll have to come back for that later - and the Return Scepter, one of the most expensive items in the game. It allows you to teleport home from anywhere on the map, but it's absurdly expensive.
Conveniently, the sewers also have an exit in the middle of town, so I don't need to walk back from all the way in the middle of the woods.
A nice surprise when I get home: eleven iridium-quality aged goat cheeses, all finished being processed in the casks in my basement. These will sell well, for over a thousand gold each.
That night ... holy crap, we have a baby.
I AM NOT READY FOR THIS DECISION.

-- It was a nice early summer day out. sunny and bright; not too warm, but not too cold. She had finished her farm work early (hot peppers and tomatoes only needed so much water after all) and decided to try her hand at fishing again. She had only really tried it once or twice since she was given a fishing rod not too long after moving back to the valley after all, so why not try it now?
She had been fishing for a bit, catching only trash and seaweed so far. On the bright side, that meant hopefully less things to pollute the water and she could use the seaweed in a recipe or two. On the downside, no fish. And trash in itself was kinda pretty boring.
However, that had seemed to change when Jess wasn’t as focused. Next thing she knew, she was fighting a harder catch; trying to hold onto the fishing pole the best she could. A smile had worked it’s way onto her face as she started to feel excited for what was on the other sire of the line; despite a part of her saying that it might not be anything. As she fought the catch, she heard a voice call out to her, and she looked back with a grin.
“Morning Elliott! And yeah, it seems so! Maybe this time it’ll be a largemouth bass!” she could only hope that it would be that easy.
@musestarred - Jess
Elliott saw many a sight from his window. Today, for example, as he quietly sipped coffee in the middle of the afternoon - insomnia would strike him anyway, so why not embrace it with sweetly scented arms? - he caught sight of that blonde farmer making a valiant attempt to fish in his ocean.
Pretty girl, really. Jess. Jess was her name. He fought down the impulse to see her as a collection of traits - like he might a protagonist - and centered in on her name. Her identity. Her general sense of quiet and removal to her farm at nearly all times - except for now, apparently. He knew very little of her beyond their occasional conversation in the past, but he wondered if perhaps…she liked it that way.
Impulse led him outside, and he watched how she drew in her line, her shoulders working intently. “Quite a catch?” he asked with an instinctive smile.
