Pokeddexy Day 12: Ice

today's mon is lapras, maybe my favorite gen 1 mon! lapras seems like such a kind and gentle pokemon who would probably be lovely to encounter in real life (i wish!!!). i tried to capture her calm and sweet nature in this design. i wanted her to look strong but still elegant, and elegant without looking pretentious, and i think i achieved it! i especially love the little swirl motif – it makes me happy every time i notice it. and i had a lot of fun using my poscas again :-)

Time for a real past-Katsucon dive, this time back to 2015! I wanna say this was probably my first Katsucon I'd ever attended (Though my memory is a bit fuzzy for years). It was certainly the first one I decided to do a big build for!

Lapras was certainly an ambitious build, and I did a lot of creative drafting work in it's creation. Everything from the braided and quilted shell to the fabric sculpting on the bodice really pushed me to get creative.

And of course, all the hand painted details. This was my first big painted costume with hundreds of hours spent ombre dyeing fabric and painstakingly hand painting all of the floral patterns onto the sleeves and gown. I'm just sad that I got only this one photo of me in it :(

rolls up with a lapras no doubt like most folks because lapras is /chefs kiss always a favorite of mine, even back when i was a wee one. lapras's shell always reminds me of the bustle on a dress, so i rolled with it to cook up some sort of... 1887 bustle dress design! it felt appropriate to make her a singer given i associate lapras with "perish song" oTL

Explanations:

Tinkaton: Cute pink thing with a hammer, they were made for each other

Espeon: Although most would choose sylveon, I chose espeon for diversity and as a reference to her sonic sense

Roserade: literally her name. Also the roserade is shiny because Amy deserves nice things

Blissey: A representation of her caring personality

Lapras: I just felt like a nice fit

Flygon: idk when i built this team at 3 am my brain said 'give her a flygon' and i did

Roserade isn't legal in gen 9, so in any regular tier I would replace with either Serperior [grass type] or Mismagius [reference to her love of tarot cards]

Hi, it's me again, another question I have is your Pokemon: Yellow starter gijinkas's friendships with other people: Are there any others that they made friends with as well while growing up? -The Anon with No Name

When I think about my other Pokemon I either caught, or traded into Yellow, OR traded from Yellow to OTHER games, the ones I spent the most time leveling-up would probably get close to the Kanto Starter trio and be friends in a gijinka scenario-

-Pidge (my Pidgey from Red, that I fully evolved to a Pidgeot), would be a flight instructor who also worked as a rescue plane pilot. Older than the main kids, but when their in their early 20s, they meet, and is one of the calm and reliable friends they have. Charmer would love learning to fly from Pidge

-Tot and Walnut (my Yellow Rattata who I leveled-up to 35 but didn't evolve, and my Raticate I caught later in the wild), would be a kid Sparky knew when he was young, but later moved away... eventually, they run into each other again as adults, and Tot shares that he found an uncle he didn't know about. Walnut is one of those guys who's rough around the edges, but genuinely caring

-Petalooma and Hemlock (my Vileploom and Victreebel I traded from Red and Blue games), two somewhat of eccentric people who live near the woods, playing up the "mysterious" act. They're both botanists, both making scientific studies/illustrations of plant life, and working on combinations for medicine (plus, homemade soap). Bough seeks them out when he needs advice about a rare plant that will help cure sick friends

-Vivi (my Eevee from Yellow, who I never evolved until much later, traded her through several games, and eventually became a Sylveon), a young girl who grew up in Celadon. She's hard of hearing, and doesn't often speak, but knows several forms of sign language. She was a bit of a child prodigy, but didn't like being forced to perform academically... she wasn't able to find her inner rebel until she met Sparky and the others as a teen, and despite her gentle and attitude, she's a tough cookie (as a Sylveon, she teaches forms of dance, and has her own fashion boutique, but is also an impressive tech genius)

-Serenity (my Lapras from Crystal), would be a librarian who lives by the ocean. She'd meet Shell after a storm hits the area, and they both work together helping people who get stuck in the area (as a gijinka, she'd be in a wheelchair, and is still very adept at swimming and knows many rescue techniques/medical facts). She actually grew up near Violet City, and spent lots of time as a child exploring Union Cave (her family didn't think she was capable being in a wheelchair, but she is very good at safety measures, figuring out technical ways to make things work)

-Pandora (my Larvitar from Crystal, who I fully evolved to a Tyranitar), would be a young punk kid at first who got abandoned in the mountain area outside of Blackthorn... she had a tough time growing up, but eventually found people who cared about her, and has mellowed as an adult. Still has a strong punk vibe, though! She has worked occasionally as a boxer, but she also enjoys painting and singing

-Ray and Kamehameha (my Raichus from Red and Ultra Sun), Sparky's distant cousins who he eventually meets. Ray works at a burger place, and Kamehameha is a lifeguard. They're both fun-loving guys who like to make sure everybody is happy, and after getting to know Sparky, they each become foster parents on their own (Ray adopts Dennis and Davey, two Pichu from my Emerald game. Kamehameha adopts Michi, a Pichu from my X game)

really funny when meringue the whimsicott is done setting up what she needed to set up and Passes Away Peacefully and then juno the hydreigon switches in alongside bagel the salamence and then its just Mayhem. then its just hell on earth for my opponent. especially since bagel is a dragon dance salamence meaning shes very bulky. and she heals. theyre just such a funny duo i should draw gijinkas of them and make them lez out. but anyway the opponent is having a bad time at this moment UNLESS on the opposite side of the field is A Humble Lapras in which case i might be the one in trouble

battle maison and battle subway and such facilities kinda messed up only letting you have a 4 pokemon team for doubles btw. like, it makes it harder to last longer against many different opponents. because you dont get to have the type of coverage you'd want. i mean thats what showdown is for and to some degree stadium since you get to pick 4 outta 6 every time. but i like doing a billion consecutive battles against npcs is the thing. its like a numbers going up kinda thing. Terrific smoko break activity. but like... im not replacing Anyone on my current oras doubles team. ive tried swapping out hydreigon for someone else and it never worked out for me. no one does it like a timid hydreggy with choice specs does it. not swapping my prankster whimsicott either. or dragon dance salamence. or eviolite dusclops. these are all necessary and as youve probably deduced my team can beat up legendaries and break through walls only to perish to A Humble Lapras

Old Lapras pokemon gijinka from a Deviantart group i was in. I never got around to redrawing their design back then in my updated art style. They are a presumed to be dead pirate enjoying retirement on a shack of a houseboat.
