lmao so it was pouring rain today in greece so i couldn’t do shit but play the sims 4 & in one of the expansion packs they have a dubrovnik-like city included among the options & a presumably croatian family called markovic with a mom, dad & a kid
i decided to throw in some drama so i hooked up the dad w this actress i created who already had a baby from another guy & had him impregnate her AND his fiancee so that on the day of the wedding they would get caught cheating & the wedding would be ruined. it rained & his fiancee gave birth right after from the stress it was very dramatic. she was going to keep him in the house for the kids’ sakes but he started a kitchen fire & that was the last straw for her
meanwhile she’s a working single mom of two kids & absolutely losing it so she starts to hook up with santa claus for stress relief & wouldn’t you know it, she gets pregnant! santa is a bit blasé abt the whole thing but now she has a teenager, a toddler, and another baby in the house that she has to manage herself! so i was like i gotta lock santa DOWN.
unfortunately, he’s into long distance low commitment gfs which i should’ve known since he only comes once a year. i move him in, force him to propose & everything is gucci. he gets the mom pregnant AGAIN (these are all on the first try btw this bitch is fertile) but this time the wedding goes swimmingly & in fact, the ex husband is the officiant since santa became good friends with him even tho the mom stjll hates his guts
meanwhile, during all of this child neglect between fucking santa, going to work, & feeding babies, the first child/daughter becomes a lesbian obsessed with vampires & on a rainy thundery night who knocks upon the door but vladislav klaus? obvi i can’t miss a chance like that so i invite him in & ask him to turn her! so now they got a carmilla in the house feeding on santa bc she hates that he replaced her dad
her brother has it WORSE though. not only is his name severin but his mom completely ditched him after he grew up to look after santa’s babies & now he’s displaying lack of emotional control & he even has an earring at age 8. no one in that family is beating the lgbt allegations. so even though he is a chess prodigy & always picks up after himself, nobody gives a shit bc he doesn’t have those aryan lapland genes that santa brought & his mom resents him for being poor southeast european trash
finally, santa’s kids, frederick & fiona frost, are getting all the cuddles & toys the other kids never did & will reign supreme over severin once i move out his sister into the vampiric lair & leave his sorry ass to be cinderela’d by santa & his mom. i bet he wishes he moved in with his deadbeat dad in his studio now
p.s. apparently in the sims even if u turn a teenager into a vampire they still keep growing so sadly i can’t create a claudia scenario but i’m kinda glad bc now i can realize my original plan of the daughter (tomi, the game named her that don’t @ me) fucking her dad’s baby mama that he left HER mama for, tying up this family tragedy in the most fucked up bow. fin
p.p.s OH and i forgot to add, when the mom had the first santa baby (heh) she was sooo exhausted she passed out & severin just LEFT the house as a toddler & walked all the way to some random beach to shit his pants there & then a lady on a bike hit him on the way home akclwndlwnc
#important to note is that tomi’s gf rn is a redhead & her dad’s baby mama is also a redhead#so that’s bonus fucked up points added#if you read this far ur a champ lol#lina laments.txt

AIR Slipvillan –Feeling Fibers
During May 2024, I worked as artist in residence at Slipvillan. Slipvillan is an AIR, exhibition venue and studio building run by artists Laetita Deschamps, Rikard Fåhraeus,Ina Rödén and a bunch of members. I am the third artist from ruimteCAESUUR(NL) to engage in an artistic exchange with Slipvillan: Giel Louws and Hans Overvliet preceded me.
Walking on Långholmen, a green island in the heart of Stockholm (SE), I connected with the place. A place to spend free time, to retreat, I thought. I feel watched through the windows of the apartment buildings across the street, by the people gathering on the little beach in the spring sun. This being-watched relates to the island in several ways: from the airing place in the former prison to the open-air theater, which has a similar floorplan. Both have a central spot, albeit with an opposite purpose: one to guard prisoners, one to be seen by the public. Time passes and the structures last.
The island is connected to the next island by two small bridges. Then there is Sweden's largest steel bridge, the Västerbron (western bridge), which seems to ignore Långholmen. From that bridge, you have great views of the city. Under that bridge, a trail of dust and rock breaks through the exuberant green of Långholmen. The green a gift of seeds that fell into the water from trading ships, germinating from the muck with which prisoners had to cover the island. Next to the bridge, a paper plane folded in stainless steel recalls the crash that took place there during an air show.
In my project proposal, I wrote that I wanted to explore the island by foot and work with the materials that wash up on Långholmen. I live and work along the Westerschelde, which leaves all kinds of partly untraceable material on the coast of Walcheren (NL). Working with washed-upmaterial is a given in my artistic process. During walks along the shoreline, I collect impressions and materials. My kids (baby and toddler) remind me of the importance of walking on a daily basis. They teach me to walk even slower and show that by using all senses, we experience ourselves as part of the environment. Already during the second walk on Långholmen it turned out that, there is no real question of ‘washing ashore’ here: the chestnuts I found, blackened by the brackish water, had fallen from a tree 30 meters away. The ropes I eventually used to create an outdoor sculpture most likely came from the shipyard near the find spot.
As Kierkegaard wrote somewhere: 'never lose your desire to walk. Every day I walk myself to well-being [...] I walk myself into my best thoughts.' Aquote I found in the book ‘The Songlines,’ by Bruce Chatwin about how among nomadic peoples and specifically among Australian Aboriginal people, their lives coincide with the landscape.
At one of Stockholm's many artist-run initiatives, Tegen2, I meet Anthony Frank Grahamsdaughter. As curator, she curated the current exhibit, which highlights hate crimes against Sami and other minority groups. She shares stories of her Native American family. They suffer from Western colonialism and racism until this day. She shows me work by Lena Stenberg, who wrote a book about the disruption of Sami life. When Nordic countries and Russia closed their borders to Sami in 1800and 1900, it was no longer possible to follow the reindeer throughout Lapland. This started a struggle for the right to live according to their traditions.
Before leaving for Sweden, I read "Braiding Sweetgrass" by Robin WallKimmerer. In it, she demonstrates and inspires through her embodiment of scientific, personal and native wisdom the importance of the relationship between man and land. There is much more to say about this but during the residency all of the above came together for me as one big question on the urgency of my relationship with my home-environment – and the role of the artistic process in this. This relationship, which I experienced as self-evident, is now confirmed as well as deepened and questioned. Something to continue to work on slowly and attentively.
During the Open Studio, I shared some of these experiences. Fellow artists Masoud Shashavari and Jannike Brantås started a wonderful conversation around artistic processes and the way a change of environment affects them. At some point Jannike asked ‘what rituals do you need in order to get to work?’ a question that still lingers.
To get an impression of the Stockholm archipelago, we took a 2.5-hour boat trip to the island of Grinda, in the heart of the archipelago. Every moment I expected to discover an "empty" horizon consisting of sky and water: every moment there was another island there. Mosses, one of the first life forms to take hold on bare rock (and be eaten by reindeer), eventually formed the work "horizon for anarchipelago (2024)" in Slipvillans’ studio. Grasses grow from the moss, their roots searching for a foothold among the rocks, just as the trees here do at large. Unlike at home, where sand and clay of the dikes desperately need tree roots and dune grasses to keep them in place – and our feet dry.
I try to capture these experiences in a map of Långholmen, linking various places on the island with my artistic attitude such as "collecting,""being alone," and "working with what is" from my work process. The map so gives an alternative impression of the island. It will be available at Slipvillan throughout 2024.
AIR Slipvillan served as a contrast experience for me with the "semi-islandlife" on Walcheren, where I live and work. It uncovered givens and made me embrace the unknown, taking in the environment and further releasing the pressure to make work. With a rock as support, it showed me that islands do not stand by themselves.

Lapland snow dream with a toddler
Last year during my road trip with Mia we spent a couple of weeks in Finland and somehow, in the middle of a forest (which is possible wherever in Finland ) I had a thought that I need to go back during the winter period. After a bit of a research I figured that February will be the best month. The only thing left was waiting (not the easiest part). I booked flights in an advance, which made it very reasonable price wise and it took me quite some time to find a perfect location. Totally by coincidence (life!) I found a beautiful wooden house in a forest, just in front of a lake. It’s built out of a wooden block, has a fireplace, comfortable big bed that will fit the three of us and (the best part) indoor sauna. The last thing is a very cool addition for the parent of a toddler. I love the sauna, but usually it’s located outside of a cottage and using it in the evening, when your toddler is finally asleep is not so easy. I also discovered, that Mia loves sauna and she will be definitely going to the spa with me in the far away future. Imagine this little girl sitting with me in the sauna and telling stories about snow and our travel. Priceless!
Coming to Lapland’s my childhood dream come true. And it was worth being a dream for such a long time, because almost each day I was dazed with it’s beauty. Lapland with 3 year old, or any age near by is definitely possible, and to be honest, awesome! I was a bit afraid it will be too cold for her, but I guess I was thinking in my personal categories. She loved the snow. She was not interested in walking with the paths, she created her own all the time, which ment ending up in a very deep snow. She was excited about all the trees covered in a snow and reindeers running around, which she was chasing with me with a carrot in hand. In the evening we did some sauna, sit in front of a fireplace, play. We’ve been there for a week and I think it was a perfect time. We did not only enjoy the snow, but did all the activities we wanted. There’s also a bigger chance to see Aurora Borelli lights when you’re there a bit longer than a weekend.
Tips:
- Invest in a very good warm clothes for your kid. Especially shoes and gloves. With -32*C during a day it is very helpful. Mia was way better prepared than I was and I started to think that I am a mother obsessing about her kid. During our stay in Finland, when the weather came to -32*C I thanked myself for doing so. There were times when Tomasz and I were freezing and Mia was totally fine.
- Cars are amazing because they have tricks, like starting it with a button. You can start the engine, let the car heat a bit and come back. From what I notice, most of the locals do it. You don’t need the key inside, so you don’t have to worry. And there’s a big difference to start driving in an extremely cold car and a warm and cozy one (it was so cold that carrots froze when I left them in a car during a day).
- Snow is deep and I mean it. There were times when we ended up in a snow, high to our hips. All because of Mia, who definitely wanted to check things out and they were never on a path.
- do some sauna, it is amazing how it warms up each centimetre in your body after a very cold day.
What we did:
Husky safari was incredible. The first time I saw the dogs already waiting for us to sit on the sledge I started to cry as all the feelings inside me were just too much. The dogs could not wait to start running! They were excited like crazy, but they did not copy me with crying thankfully. The whole idea of the dog team is, that one person sits in the sledge, the second one stands on the back and helps the dogs when it’s uphill or on more difficult parts. The first thought when I sat in the sledge was “damn, it does smell with a dog poo”. Yes, it does, but you stop smelling it straight after you start the run. It turns out that dogs are able to run and poo at the same time. The other thing is that whenever the dogs from the other sledge end up next to you, they feel obliged to pee on you. Thankfully, we got all cover clothes from the husky farm, so it wasn’t such a big deal (but it was the first time a dog peed on me twice during 1h). When it comes to the experience, I must say “OMG, the coolest, funniest, exciting experience ever!” The dogs were so friendly and cute, I just wanted to sit with them and talk to them. Yes, I do talk to animals and I usually tell them how awesome they are and how much I adore them. We switched places with Tomasz, so each one of us had a chance to steer the sledge and to hug Mia on the way. It is fun, but also a hard work, because sometimes you need to push the sledge or run next to it while paying attention when to jump back. You have many choices, you can go for an overnight safari, or 3 days long one, but we took the 2,5h one and we were totally satisfied, as our 3 year old has a limit in her tolerance.
Aureole Borelli - I was sure that I will not be able to see it, as I could not see Mia on a night safari. Tomasz did and we decided on a sledge pulled by a snowmobile. At the beginning, it was all good, I even kept thinking what all the fuss about being cold is all about. After about 30 minutes I got it. The temperature of your body drops and doesn’t matter how many layers of the socks or how many gloves you have, it starts to be very cold. There were times when I thought that I will not manage for longer than 10 minutes. But, with no surprise, Mia was super ok, super excited and not cold at all. She sang songs for everyone and when we stopped for a hot coffee and snacks, she was the one who wanted to go out and search for lights (none of the adults did). This trip was the first time for many things, first night safari, first aurora light hunt failure and the first time I used the arctic toilet. I do not recommend it - super cold experience. We did not see the aurora lights that particular night, but we did the next day. We drove to Nellim by a car, parked next to a river and waited with all the lights off for 3 hours. It was worth it! I did not take my tripod and my pictures are not so good, but I have one as a souvenir. Mia kept sleeping in a warm car, we were talking with Tomasz about life and our future plans.
Snowmobile safari was so much fun. Mia went with us as well. For this kind of fun you need to have a driving licence and as I am the only one in this family with one, I could drive the snowmobile and Tomasz ended up in a sledge with our baby girl. Ups. Snowmobile is much different than a scooter, it’s not so easy to drive, as the road (frozen river and forest) is not as simple to drive through. But it was fun!
This trip taught me many things, but the most important one is, that my kid loved each step of the adventure. I went many places with her, we ended up in many extreme situations and she always ends up being the awesome one. Not complaining, not crying, not being bored, excited about the next step. We made many activities including very low temperatures and she did not mind at all. Only one thing makes me sad - the school obligation will start in a few years and she won’t be able to be on the road with me.
Wild Spirit Park - great place with rescued animals. We had a chance to see a fluffy white arctic fox, always hungry wild pigs and many huskies.
Here are the addresses and companies we used. We made quite a research and were very satisfied with each one:
- Hut in the woods
- Husky safari - Husky Guesthouse
- Night Aurora lights safari and snowmobile safari"
- Restaurant Kultahippu" - delicious reindeer steak
- Bistro Cafe Ivalo - delicious sandwiches and hot coco
- Wild Spirit Park
You need to try:
- LEIPÄJUUSTO - this cheese rocks!
- reindeer steak
- karjalanpiirakka - pastries, which will make a good breakfast
What we learned:
- there are only 15 white foxes left in Finland. They are usually killed by red foxes in the wild. They are completely white during the winter and get black spots during a warm season.
- reindeers in Finland are semi-free. Each one belongs to someone. The owners are Sami people (original Lapland inhabitants). There may be only particular amount of reindeers in the forests so each year they count them and if there’s too many, some part goes for the meat.
- reindeers are awesome and they will let you come for about 20m close.
- reindeers run in a very funny way.
- sometimes you see aurora lights and you’re not aware that it’s there, but if you take a picture, you’ll see it straight away.

Helsinki Days
Hi again! I wanted to write a post to describe how awesome -- despite Rowan’s turn for the worse health-wise, for like a span of twelve hours -- Helsinki has been! I will give you some narrated snapshots here of our Friday and Saturday in Helsinki (which, if you’re a real Finn, you pronounce HEL-sing-ee, just FYI).
So, we got to our Airbnb at about 10:45 on Friday morning and Martina, the owner of the apartment, met us here and gave us the key and showed us the ins-and-outs (we wore our masks, which people look at with such curiosity here, but we simply had to, given our health situation!). Martina is a former circus-troupe-director! Her daughter lives in Paris and is a circus performer! Martina was wonderful and so helpful.
As soon as she left the apartment and started her journey north to Lapland (13 hours, though she was stopping six hours in to stay overnight at her son’s), we popped some laundry in, which we were really in need of doing, and then we went on a walk. There is water very nearby the apartment and the kids played on the rocks and collected some of them and ... well, we just walked for a while ... then, Rowan started to really wither. It came on so quickly. His body started to ache and he was soooo fatigued. So, Eric rented one of the scooters that have become a scourge in big cities worldwide. And while Rowan was trepidatious about riding on one with Eric (I think it’s not actually allowed to take a child on one with an adult -- but oh well), they did, and they got back to the apartment very quickly. And Rowan got right in bed and slept for a few hours. While they were there, Cece and I walked around central Helsinki a bit more and stopped in an “apteeki” -- a pharmacy-- and got some chewable children’s ibuprofen. When we got home, I gave Rowan some and within thirty minutes, he felt soooo much better. By the next morning, he felt fine!
We did go out Friday night to procure some groceries -- masked, again -- at the Alepa grocery store, .2 miles from the apartment, and Rowan decided on a box of frozen fish chowder for his meal. An interesting choice! Cece had carrot, hummus, and sardines ;) At least they were fed, right?!
So, Saturday was great --everyone was feeling well and we felt as if the worst of our Covid chapter was closed! We sure hope that is the case. We are going to continue being very cautious for a few days more, with masking whenever we’re inside, but, I think we are no longer symptomatic and we are super relieved. Annnnyway, Saturday morning, the kids went outside in the backyard of the apartment and played in the sandbox and Rowan made some beautiful sand art (which I think I posted a photo of) and Cece ran back and forth chasing the kids playing “summer hockey.” After a while, at about noon, we had lunch in our apartment, and then I walked quickly down to one of the main shopping streets to go to a Finnish boutique, and then I met back up with the kids and Eric and we drove out to a suburb and went to the Marimekko outlet. I hate to say it, but I am not sure I will go there again on our next visit, though it has been a pilgrimage the last three visits to Helsinki. I think I have enough Marimekko fabric at this point and honestly, their clothes are just too “large format” for me --the prints just look odd, typically, on someone of a small frame like me. I did buy a shirt with a smaller, more detailed pattern, and a shirt for Cece. Also, in the past, they have had one rack of kids’ clothes, but it is really unpredictable. This time, they had almost no children’s clothing at the outlet.
We also went into a shop called Tokmanni, which we always get a kick out of visiting -- we did for the first time when Rowan was a toddler. It is sort of like a Target, but smaller scale, and there, this time, we picked up some more Covid tests (even though the U.S. lifted their regulation that travelers have to test negative to return to the U.S.!), and we also bought some snacks, including something that looks exactly like a bagel, but is actually a pretzel? And is flavored vanilla? It is called a “rikeli” and the kids had a few over the course of the afternoon (they are also called kringle in Swedish, but these were not shaped like other kringle I’ve seen), when we went to a national park called Nuuksio, about forty minutes away. At Nuuksio, the kids and Eric played and swam in a gorgeous lake and we walked just a bit -- but then, after a few hours, were were getting quite hangry.
We drove back to Helsinki and after a short walk, we ended up at a restaurant with ample outdoor seating (thank heavens for the mild weather on this trip! With all of the outdoors eating and sightseeing we’ve had to do, bad weather would’ve created some real challenges!). We had a delicious dinner at Same Same but Different and the kids got to create some artwork for their walls. We went to bed full and happy and now ... it’s Sunday! We also have gone to some playgrounds and have seen several parties in parks, which are constituted of circle of twenty-somethings sitting around in the grass drinking in nice attire. Anyway, more soon!

“You go to Lapland a lot of the time. A lot of ski resorts do the whole Santa and reindeer thing now I think.” He confessed, he had looked in to it all when Izzy was little but it all seemed very excessive. “I think Ollie is just overwhelmed by the thought of a baby, he’s the baby.” Callum pointed out, their youngest was definitely struggling to get to terms with the fact that Teddy was pregnant. Seeing the baby move freaked the toddler out every time. “She’s a trier, I give her that. I told you, if we take her to Disneyland it will stay in her mind forever.
“Well, If we decide to go on a ski trip this year then that one can be checked off. It would just have to be between now and Christmas.” Christmas with no kids was stressful. Christmas with one kid was more stressful. And Christmas with two kids and one on the way while both parents work was a whole other kind of stressful. “Ollie and I have that in common.” Teddy was less than thrilled upon finding out about their “surprise baby.” They both agreed they were done...they just didn’t actually do anything about being done. “He’ll come around to it. I mean he just started saying a few words other than mama and dada so it will probably take him being born for it to not be so abstract.” She explained. “Well, it seemed like a great idea at the time.” She laughed. “She’s at least going to keep asking until we can go and I’m not limited on what rides I can go on with her like it’s been every other time we’ve gone....Who am I kidding, she’s gong to expect every year multiple times.”
"Have you seen our daughter's Christmas list this year?" (TeddyXCallum) -Teddyaltman-cardiogoddess
"I have -- and I've already told her we cannot go and see the real Sven." He pointed out with a roll of his eyes, their daughter was very ambitious with her Christmas list this year. "And that we can't hurry along the baby so that they arrive by Christmas. We may just have to buy her one of those fake dolls that cry and you feed."

Thunderbirds -- Ch. 1
Setting for the original chapter is mid-90′s L.A.
TW: Language, alcohol.
I re-seated my headphones before turning the volume up to its maximum level. Ideally, I would be working in silence, I wasn't the type that usually kept a playlist going while I was writing, but Roger and his bimbo du jour were making too much racket for me to even hear myself think, let alone write. I had given up and gone to bed initially, but the plot swirling in my head would not let me sleep and I had soon found myself back at my desk, pen in hand, desperately trying to get my thoughts down before they were gone altogether. I tried to ignore the groaning and shouting that still bled through the blasting sounds of Brian Molko's trademark nasal vocals, but when something or someone bashed into the shared wall so forcefully that the cup full of pens on my desk turned over and sent its contents spilling I threw the headphones off in frustration. I knew from volumes of experience that asking Roger to tone it down was a waste of breath so I changed out of my pajamas, threw my notebooks and supplies into a backpack and headed out to find somewhere quieter to work. Like a construction site or busy train station. On the way out the door I saw my favorite hat, a brightly colored Laplander with a ridge of yarn approximating a Mohawk down the center, and even though it wasn't really cold in enough in L.A. this time of year for that, I hadn't fixed my hair after getting back up so I pulled it on before heading out of the apartment door.
I really didn't know where I was going. It was 1 a.m., and though L.A. is full of late night spots I really didn't know many of them. All of my time was spent working two jobs to try to keep a roof over my head and save up enough money to finish school and writing. I was always writing. Even while I walked and plotted my revenge on Roger, in the back of my mind characters were interacting, I was changing out words and sentences, questioning motivations and debating plot structure. I was so lost in the zone I was actually sort of surprised when I stumbled on the nearly deserted diner. I figured it would be the perfect place to continue working though.
I found the quietest booth I could, as far away from the potentially noisy counter as possible and spread my writing implements out. The place was empty save for a few older men at the counter and a couple of teenagers in a corner booth who were feeding each other french fries and necking. The waitress was with me quickly, a middle aged woman that looked so much the part of late night diner waitress that I wondered if she had been hired or cast. Either one was possible I suppose, this was L.A. after all. I looked at her name tag. Maxine. Of course it was. I ordered some fries and a Coke, pulled my hat down as far as I could and tucked back into my work.
I don't remember Maxine coming back with my food. By the time I noticed they were there, the fries were cold and my drink was warm. As I added ketchup to my plate I realized the diner was filling back up, presumably with the after-bar crowd. I started on my fries and wondered if Roger and his date had finished their Olympic class shenanigans or if I should hang here a little while longer. I looked at my watch. 2:44 am. They were probably starting with round two (or three? I had to give the guy his props, he did have some stamina) by now. Best to just stay.
The door jingled open again and this time two young men came through. The shorter of the two stumbled drunkenly to the booth next to me, followed by his friend, who seemed to more or less sober but somewhat irritated. Just as he was about to sit down, the drunk one noticed me and flashed a wide grin. Instead of sliding into a seat in the adjoining booth he sidled in across from me.
“Hey! Great hat!” he said, leaning across the table so he was inches from my face. “Jay! Look at her hat!”
“Jesus Shannon, leave the girl alone,” the taller of the pair said. “Come sit over here and behave yourself.” He turned back towards the counter where Maxine was currently serving up plates of burgers. “Can we got a couple coffees please?”
Shannon made no effort to move, however. “Oh coffee, yes let's get coffee!” He turned to me and gave a lopsided blink that I think was supposed to be a wink. “I like coffee.” He looked down at my plate. “French Fries! Jay, get some french fries too!”
I looked up at his companion who gave the sigh of the long put-upon friend that I knew all too well from years of dealing with Roger. He mouthed a “Sorry” at me. I shrugged. I figured I was done writing for the night anyways and I had some time to kill before the apartment would be quiet again. Besides, the guys were extremely cute and it was a public, well-lit space and about as safe as anywhere. I pushed my fries over to Shannon who immediately started eating them. With a laugh, I gestured to the bench next to him. “I think he's here to stay. You might as well join us. Jay is it?”
He looked around for a second and then slid into the booth, scooting his french fry scarfing companion to the side as he did so. “It's Jared actually. This is Shannon.”
“Hi, Jared. I'm Jane.” He was even better looking close up, soft brown hair, bright blue eyes, and the cutest little upturned nose. “I have a Shannon too. His name is Roger. He always gets into trouble when we go out.”
“Hey!” Shannon waved a french fry in my general direction. “I'll have you know I'm quite the gentleman!” Jared looked at him with a cocked eyebrow.
“Really?” I said.
“No.” Shannon roared with laughter, the joke far funnier to him than us. “But I'm cute so I get away with a lot.” He batted his eyes at me, long lashes framing warm hazel eyes, that wicked grin never leaving his face. He probably got away with murder, that one.
“So Jane,” Jared tried to deflect the conversation, “What are you doing by yourself in a diner at almost three in the morning?”
“Avoiding my roommate.” I told him. “Or more to the point, avoiding my roommate and his very loud... date.”
“Would that be the Roger you mentioned?”
“Yeah. I was trying to get some writing done. It was a lot quieter here when I came in.”
Maxine appeared beside us then with their two cups of coffee, setting them down on the table before handing menus to the guys. “Can I get you two anything besides the coffee tonight?”
Jared moved a cup over in front of Shannon. “Can I get a couple orders of fries?”
“And eggs!” Shannon added, blowing on his coffee. “I want eggs! With runny yolks.”
Jared grimaced. “A couple of eggs too I guess.” He looked at me. “You want anything else? My treat, since you're being such a good sport.”
“Maybe just a fresh order of fries?”
Jared gave the waitress a smile. “You heard the pretty lady, Maxine. Fries all around.” He looked over at Shannon who was spinning the salt shaker around the table, sending grains scattering across the surface. He snatched the dispenser away from him. “And keep the coffee coming too please.”
“I'll bring you a fresh Coke too, hon.” She said as she gathered the menus back up and was gone. I started putting my notebooks and pens away, afraid Shannon was going to spill something on them any minute. He apparently was one of those happy but incorrigible drunks; it was a bit like having a toddler a the table. He noticed what I was doing and started to help.
“So, Jane,” he said, drawing out my name and emphasizing it as he batted his eyelashes at me again, “Got a boyfriend?”
“Oh my god,” I laughed.
Jared cringed. “I'm sorry. My brother thinks he has game when he's drunk.” He looked Shannon, shaking his head. “He doesn't.”
“Brothers huh?”
Shannon threw his arms around Jared and gave him a big kiss on the cheek. “Yup, this is my baby brother, Jared.” Jared smiled sheepishly.
“So what's in the notebooks?” Jared asked as I stowed the last one in my backpack.
I thought about lying and saying it was school work. I was very self-conscious about my writing. “Oh, just some writing I was doing,” I ended up replying as nonchalantly as possible.
“Like for a class or something?”
“No. It's a story I've been working on.” I concentrated on bunching up my straw wrapper which still lay on the table, trying not to look at those blazing blue eyes of his. What was with these brothers and their completely different but completely mesmerizing eyes?
“Oh, writing as in you're a writer!” Jared said brightly. I looked up, expecting a condescending expression on his face, but there was no trace of it there. “That's really cool. Have you published anything yet? Have you been at it for long?”
His enthusiasm threw me for a second. “Uh, well, I had a couple short stories published in a periodical back home. I mean I didn't get paid or anything but I got some nice reviews. I haven't actually sold anything yet but I'm still trying to finish college so we'll see.”
Jared nodded. “Well, you just have to keep working at it. That's the best way to improve your art, always. Lots of repetition.”
“Oh, I agree,” I said. “I write any time I get a spare minute. I've wanted to be a writer since I was ten years old.”
“What kind of things do you write?”
I shrugged. “Different things. Mostly just short stories, just sort of general fiction things. I've dabbled in writing horror, I really like horror but I'm not as good at writing it.”
“Well, you have to keep at that too, if that's what you want to do.” He flashed me another smile, probably meant to dazzle me in the same way Shannon's had been. It wasn't exactly not working. “Maybe you'll let me read something some time?”
I cringed internally. Why did everyone want to read something the minute you told them you write? He was probably just saying it to be polite or charming but it made me squirm uncomfortably. I decided to change the subject. “How about you? What do you do? Are you chasing something too or did you already find it?”
“Ha!” Shannon burst out, giving his brother a playful shove to the shoulder. “She doesn't recognize you.”
“Shut up Shannon,” Jared said quickly.
Shit. I hoped this wasn't about to turn into a “Don't you know who I am?” thing. The brothers had seemed so nice and down to earth. If I was uncomfortable a minute ago I was downright mortified now.
“I'm sorry. Should I know you?”
“It's okay. I'm an actor but I haven't really done that much.” I could swear at this point Jared kicked Shannon under the table. “I don't know if I'm going to keep up with it though. I got a call back for this movie which is kind of a big break but ….” he trailed off, starting to look as uncomfortable as I felt. “Actually Shannon and I are working on a band”
“Oh, you guys are musicians?” Jared nodded and gave me a soft smile. He seemed more comfortable talking about that than about the acting so I went with it. “That's great. You should do what makes you happy if you can.”
Shannon gave the table a few rhythmic smacks. “I play drums,” he said with the simple enthusiasm of a six-year-old. I couldn't help but laugh.
“Well, the next time you guys play you'll have to let me know so I can come,” I said, sincerely hoping I'd get to see these two around again. I was already taking a liking to them.
“I'd like that,” Jared said. “We'll have to meet up.” He smiled warmly and I felt my cheeks flush. The longer he sat there across from me, the more I began to think he was possibly the best looking guy I had seen up close. This was saying something as my best friend and roommate Roger was a model, who was constantly dragging other models home with him. I was used to gorgeous. It paraded through my home on a regular basis. This guy was more than that.
Shannon chose that moment to snatch the hat off my head and put it on his own, revealing my riotous blonde curls. I tried to smooth them out but gave up when neither guy seemed to take any notice of my bed head. Instead, Shannon was playing with the hat and making goofy faces while Jared tried to get the hat away from him. By the time my hat was returned to me we were all breathless with laughter.
Maxine reappeared then with plates of fries and Shannon's eggs. The confiscated salt shaker was reproduced, ketchup was passed around and we sat there talking about music and dreams while Shannon dipped fries into his runny egg yolks and Jared and I wrinkled our noses at him. I liked them both, they were bright and funny and even though I sensed they were absolute terrors when they got going they were really very sweet through the whole meal. As Shannon sobered up he got quieter and quieter, letting Jared and me carry most of the conversation. We were discussing a trip I had taken to Brazil the summer after I graduated high school when I realized it had gotten light outside.
“Oh my god, what time is it?” I checked my watch and saw it was nearing 6 am. I had been at the diner for four hours now, two and a half of them talking with Jared and Shannon. “Shit. I have to book guys, I have to be at work in a couple hours.” As I grabbed my backpack, Shannon shoved a napkin at me.
“Hey, at least give me your number so I can invite you to come hear us play. You offered after all,” he reminded me.
I smiled and scrawled the digits on the flimsy diner napkin. “I don't really get out much, but that would be great. I would totally be there.”
He gave me that lopsided blink/wink again and, just for a second, I felt that pleasant, familiar tingle in my stomach. Both of these brothers were definitely having an effect on me. I decided to high-tail it out of there as quickly as possible before I got myself into real trouble. Jared stood up as I did and waited until I had my backpack in place then gave me a big hug.
'It was nice to meet you, Jane. I hope we see you again soon.”
And just like that, I was heading out the door and the chance encounter was over. If Roger hadn't been having ridiculously loud and acrobatic sex, if I hadn't grabbed that hat on my way out, if I hadn't ended up at that diner, if I had been in a bad mood and shooed away the drunk instead of sharing my fries with him.... thirty seconds total maybe of left turn/right turn, 'a’ or ‘b’ type decisions had led me there. Thirty seconds.
I had not yet begun to appreciate the irony of that.

Dry-Heave Warning: Mummy Goes To Lapland
This video will honestly either make you want to dry heave into a paper bag or fill you with utter joy; it’s ever so slightly sentimental andI use my “mummy voice”. You have been warned. I went to Lapland on a press trip recently and wanted to film something for Ted and Angelica to show them what I get up to when I go away (sledding, ice-fishing, staying in a treehouse – standard), but then I thought, why not just put the video out there and see how it goes down? Maybe people love being spoken to like a small child – it could be a new trend. An ASMR kind of thing. Regression therapy.
So anyway, here’s my trip to Lapland condensed into one manageable episode; there’s a lot of talk of snow and how many layers I’m wearing, but that’s the sort of thing you talk about when you’re talking to three year olds. isn’t it? To be quite honest, I don’t think I could film one of these for the kids again – it’s enough work having to think about filming all the time anyway without also having to consider how to film it in a way that’ll be engaging to toddlers. I mean, short of breaking into a Mr Tumble routine what can you actually film on your own that would be interesting enough for under-fours? There’s only so much jazz-handed enthusiasm one woman can conjure when talking about relatively mundane things. “Now I’m going to breakfast!” “This is my little shower room!” “Mummy forgot to pack toothpaste!”
Granted, the sled ride and ice fishing would have been very interesting to a three and two year old, but for it to be properly appealing it all needs to be Disneyfied these days; ice fishing with mummy is boring, ice fishing when a talking cartoon penguin pops up out of the ice hole and launches into a power ballad would just about be acceptable entertainment. The bar is set high.
See how you get on with this – if you’d like more videos that make you feel like a tiny child then do be vocal about it. It can be arranged. Although the amount of swearing I had to edit out – bloody hell! It was like a constant stream of profanities and inappropriateness! Especially with Nadine Baggott as sidekick.
By the way; if you want an adult version (steady!) of my video then do watch Nadine’s. I’ve popped the link below the video screen.

This was my first actual time driving the truck whereas pulling the trailer and I was pretty proud of myself. Just earlier than we acquired to Indy, Noah woke up and nearly instantly instructed me to drag over. I used to be alarmed and saved asking "What, what, what?" Noah thought the trailer felt bumpy and appeared in the side view mirror and immediately observed it. We acquired out on the side of the freeway to check it out; it was shredded and melted! I felt actually unhealthy, but in my defense, for security causes, the trailer has two tires on every side to prevent accidents, so we had been still rolling alongside fairly properly on the nice tire.
