Junot with Josephine and Hippolyte Charles on an Italian road trip

The following account was written by Antoine-Romain Hamelin, a man who had managed to secure through his wife Fortunée, a friend of Josephine, a position for himself with the army of Italy in 1796. Around the same time, General Leclerc and his aide-de-camp Hippolyte Charles were due to leave for Italy as well, and it was decided Hamelin would travel with them.

But then, on the very same day that Leclerc, Charles and Hamelin were due to leave, Junot arrived in Paris bearing the news that Napoleon wished for Josephine to join him in Italy. It was decided that when Junot left in a couple of days he would bring Josephine with him, and the latter begged Leclerc to postpone his departure so that they could all travel together. Leclerc complied with her wishes.

Perhaps Josephine only wanted to spend more time with her lover Charles. Perhaps she was traumatised from the revolution and needed Charles for emotional support. That's up to personal interpretation, but either way a rather awkward situation was created for Junot, Leclerc, Hamelin and Joseph Bonaparte, who had also joined the trip.

"Finally, in the first days of June 1796, we all set off for Milan, preceded by the courier Moustache, whose name has become historic for the number of victories of which he carried the news. Joseph Bonaparte had just been appointed war commissioner, but he never fulfilled his duties. He had education, a fine mind and great kindness. […] Junot made us laugh with his soldierly outbursts, and the trip would have been very cheerful without the sulks of this little Charles who was jealous as soon as a preference of which he was not the object made him fear losing his conquest.

We only stopped at Lyon, at Lanslebourg, at the foot of Mont-Cenis, and at Turin, and I saw how the accommodation was distributed. Charles with Josephine, Junot with Mademoiselle Louise*, and Joseph alone, since he took away from Paris the burning memories of too vulgar love affairs."

*Mademoiselle Louise was Josephine's maid on this trip.

The road starts from Lanslebourg High Street, and zigzags broadly up the mountainside. Ascending the Relai du Mt Chat, I had met an old chap who kindly explained that the Col de Mt Cenis was longer, but not nearly as steep as the Mt du Chat! So each turn was a wee bit over a mile long, and there were 5. So I struggled up each one in blisteringly hot weather, stopping regularly, but making good progress. It was stunning how one could pass the treeline on other slopes and after a couple hours saw my first snow! It was getting serious. On the way up I saw the skiing infrastructure, frozen in the heat, waiting for the powder. There were also several abandoned chalets and shacks in diverse stages of disintegration, my curiosity was piqued as to their history and purpose, but I could only pause, sweat and wonder. I also saw plenty folk on the snowline, digging for the fresh wild greens that had begun to sprout. As the final mount came into view, the last quarter-mile, the wind picked up and I experienced the primordial fear of being plucked off the high bare hillside to be swept into the surrounding void: the green and pleasant valley floor seemed very distant. The sun turned grey as I realised the clouds were now my spectral fellow travellers on the road.
