Street Signage (I) During the period of the Industrial Revolution, train stations, municipal and office buildings required signs for identity and wayfinding. By the post war years, completely new building typologies were developed to support rapidly growing multinational companies. Companies that needed type and identity approaches to communicate to a wide variety of cultures. Corporate iconography and typography both became the mediums to convey this messaging. And by the 1950s and 1960s there was an explosion in typography; used in urban branding. From McDonalds® to Macys® to A&P® to Mobil®. Perhaps even to the two companies in the above photograph.
