Week 3

This week, I wanted to find a voice on campus for Asian Americans. It is important that student services provide an office or support services to students who identify in this community. In order to examine what campuses had to offer, I examined cultural and resource centers at University of Illinois, Lane Community College and Wellesley College. I chose these three institutions as one is a large public, one is a community college and the last is a small, private institution. My purpose is to address any differences between the size of an institution and the support services it offers to Asian American students.   

University of Illinois: Within its Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Relations this university offers an Asian American Cultural Center (AACC) that provides events and programs for any students who want to learn about the cultures. AACC is devoted to fostering the understanding of Asian American cultures and development of its students. 

University of Illinois has multiple units on campus that focus on Asian American studies, research, outreach and advising for Asian American students. On their Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Relations homepage Illinois states, “Our campus has a total close to 17,000 Asian American and Asian international students, which makes 37% of students at the UI are of Asian descent” (UI, n.d.). UI crafted student services around its large population of Asian American and Asian international students. 

Lane Community College: This college offers an Asian Pacific American Student Program Coordinator Office within its multicultural center. This program provides resources and follow-up services to create a smooth transition for students. The office offers student organization scholarship, career and academic counseling along with social events to aid in integration. 

Lane Community College also hopes to provide students who do not identify with Asian American culture with opportunities to learn about Asian American culture and lifestyle. This university did not have a FAQ page so I could not compare the Asian American population on their campus, however, its services and offices were less impressive than that of IU which could be a result of a smaller population. 

Wellesley College: For this small, liberal arts university, cultural centers are a big part of what they do. Wellesley has an Asian Student Advising Center that offers services to international students or students of Asian Descent.  The homepage describes missions and goals of the cultural center that align with the university’s mission. It also provides links to resources, internships, events and the team. 

Exploring the cultural centers led to the discovery of statistics for all international students. These statistics describe the breakdown of type of student and their native country. Wellesley goes into detail about their Asian American student population and how to retain them. 

What I learned from these comparisons is that bigger, public universities will recruit a greater number of international students of Asian American descent because they are well-known. Small, private and community colleges will attract international students, however, those on the east and west coast will attract more students. Universities adapt its services to the needs of its students which explains why UI’s cultural center was so large and provided many opportunities.

Supposed to be studying...

Instead I am sprawled out on Keely's couch browsing through scuba tags on tumblr. I won a USIA Techniflex dry suit on Sunday while participating in the annual Dive for a Cure event. I was so shocked, I could not believe that I won. I am so grateful for the kindness showed to me by the diving community of Eugene. These people are so wonderful I cannot wait to get to know everyone better. I feel like this is a sign to continue my degree in marine biology and not give up by switching to a major where I would make more money in the long run.
