(About that last anon) I'm tired of people trying to play white knight for Native's (First Nations). It's not racist to draw a fetishizer wearing brownface. Others may find it offensive but at the end of the day it is making fun of Lily.

I want to be charitable here and say, I respect the fact that there's a fine line here and I acknowledge I'm dancing close to it. Not to make this blog sound more high minded than it is, but, that's kind of the thing with comedy. Getting close to the boundary between funny and offensive without going over it-- which, you know, fuck ups happen you have to take responsibility for. Can't be a little bitch about it.

The internet is both a somewhat uniquely hostile place for comedy in the way platforms encourage knee-jerk, bad faith, inflammatory responses and the ways in which fuckface pissbaby grifters can monopolize that environment to hide away from genuine criticism.

I spoke about this before, I made the decision to redirect my jokes towards my "Liquid Orcard" character, pretending to be human as the punchline rather than her specifically pretending to be First Nations. You know, just to put a little distance between my jokes and the genuinely harmful rhetoric around blood quantity discourse-- just to make sure they're reading right.

But like, there's landmines everywhere. There always is. Lily is a trans woman, and portraying a trans woman as an inhuman creature could also be twisted into being transphobic. That's not okay inherently in every context either.

Lily knows this. This is her bread and butter. This is the basis of her whole dog and pony show.

Just pointing out the fact that she's had a history of predatory behavior, can't be trusted around minors, has a history of abusing her partners, etc. could be twisted into a transphobic and racist attack.

I've SEEN it used as a genuine transphobic attack against her and by association, the trans community as a whole (which Lily never says shit about, I'd like to point out. Sabine, who also pretends to be POC online when they're really white, has called Lily a "pedophilic troon." She apparently doesn't give a fuck when it's them.) Because what Lily actually looks like has been public knowledge for as long as she has I've never really seen anyone take the claim she's POC seriously for obvious reasons, but I'm sure if she was, there'd be genuine racist shit online about her too.

I want to make it clear I'm not implying Lily is ALSO pretending to be trans. I believe in gender equality-- men, women and enbies alike can be shitheels. We can all respect her gender identity while pointing out she's a right-wing, basement dwelling, anti-social, absolute high priestess of goonfunery.

But she knows she can hide behind the smokescreen of genuine transphobic whinging. She knows she can cry racism if she sticks to the lie her white ass has experienced discrimination from being visibly of colour. Dare I say, she's subtly encouraged it. The fucked shit about bigotry is that it enables anti-social behavior for minorities aswell in certain circumstances. The fucking victims of oppression are always people who want to be a pro-social, positive, productive member of society. Who have to fight for the right to live their fucking lives as honestly as possible. This is the design of the industrial machine.

It's not a totally invalid question to ask in all circumstances. And though it's hard for me to always . . . Totally empathize with, I get the internet allows access to people who come from, let's say, more sheltered environments to see things they don't have full context for. As a trans person myself amd for the sake of my POC family members, in today's political climate, I'd encourage people to have a healthy skepticism against the kinds of things Lily is being accused of. Within reason. It's fucked, but this is the shit-pit grifters and outrage merchants put I all in.

But like, if you know who Lily is already, you know it's 100% a valid fucking thing to take the piss out of her for. The context tracks. And, with all do respect, the reason why that other anon thought there was a difference between just stating Loly is doing brownface and an image making fun of Lily for doing brownface is because humor gives it a bit more of a punch.

I’ve been wondering - - might you expand upon THE SITUATION a bit?

Yep, I was wondering y’all would finally snap!!!

Alright, so I’m gonna put this under a cut but the TL;DR for people is that it’s a clusterfuck of barely repressed trauma & misunderstanding landmines. You get this from a lot of media, but this one’s gay & actually comes to a reasonable resolution before the last minute. 

& Welcome to those of you who clicked! Here’s a bonus doodle:

(Also another quick thing for those of you who’re here: Jasper & Perri are definitely not romantically involved, they think of each other as siblings & best friends. Not gonna do any bullshit with incest, adopted or not. I had to explain this to someone I swear to god.)

So with even more confusion instilled in your minds, let’s get this show on the road!!!

So the Runaways’ are a small ragtag family who ended up in Kingdom (yes the kingdom’s called Kingdom) after some pretty dark backstory stuff. The Runaways at this point are Talon, Øngi, Russet, & our lovely Perri.

But of course, being on the run doesn’t exempt you from rent payments, so each of the siblings ended up taking jobs around the city, Perri landing himself the sole cleaning job for the House of Crowns, cause the King believes that it’s much more cost-effective to just have one person do the entire castle’s worth of work. 

He’s an asshole.

But through this shitty job, Perri stumbles upon a locked room hidden in what seemed to be a supplies closet. After picking the lock (cause he’s a curious boi who doesn’t know what’s good for him) he ends up finding an equally confused Hunter, who was locked in his bedroom Rapunzel style for 10 years cause his dad just forgot he existed.

Once again, he’s an asshole.

& An idiot.

Don’t worry, we kill him.

So of course, Perri’s not gonna leave him there, so Hunter joins our little Runaway group!

Everyone loves Hunter (as they should) cause a) he’s baby, b) he’s very smart, c) he’s op to all hell. But nobody loves Hunter as much as Hunter loves Perri, as they quickly go from friends to joyfriends! They’re both just big drama doofuses & love & appreciate each other.

Flash forward a few years.

Enter Jasper Poppy, a recently revived enby with more repressed trauma than you could shake a stick at, who lands themself the ‘coveted’ position of a Cardinal: messengers charged with relaying information across the mountains on foot, cause the internet & magic don’t mix well, the sea will probably try to eat you, & horses are delicacies for the dragons of the Hlaupas.

Basically, the job sucks but pays extremely well.

For one reason or another, Jasper & Perri become fast friends, even if Jasper’s barely in town enough to get two words in. They find themself pretty quickly adopted into the Runaway family, who basically took one look at the sad orphan with a tragic backstory & went mine. & Jasper, being the confused bean that they are, sorta just went along with it with a traumatized grin, earning themself the position of the unofficial fifth sibling, due to their refusal to taking up the family name.

Due to their new inclusion into the family, Hunter & Jasper became pretty close friends as well, & Jasper, being the type of person to fall head over heels in love with anyone who even blinks at them, pretty quickly developed a crush on the other enby.

Perri found out & was completely cool with it, quickly taking to teasing the hell out them, cause siblings, but Jasper themself wasn’t so cool with it. They very quickly took to repressing that shit right down, much to the confusion & worry of Perri.

Though that didn’t stop Hunter from developing a crush right on back towards our flower boi, & taking to expressing it in the very Hunter way of becoming a complete lovebug with no off-switch.

So now Jasper’s attempting to repress even more shit down, Hunter’s completely oblivious through his rose coloured glasses, & Perri’s standing there very concerned & confused about how to set his sibling up with his joyfriend.

You think this’ a good place to start our story, with a reasonable character conflict set out & good intrigue about why Jasper’s taken to pretending they don’t feel this way?

Well, technically no, but also technically yes.

So anyway, stuff happens, & Hunter ends up presumed dead, leaving a heartbroken Perri & an even more traumatized Jasper behind.

He’s not dead.

Brain-damaged & with complete memory loss, yes!

But not dead!

How thrilling.

He ends up getting picked up off of some beach somewhere by his cousin Ashi, who has very strong opinions about things.

& now our story starts!

So a more shallow dive into our actual story, cause I’m hoping on writing it & don’t want to give too much away. Jasper & Perri are both rightfully ecstatic that Hunter’s not dead, but are in a very awkward spot now.

It’s Perri’s turn on the repression spiral! He takes up the opinion that Hunter shall never know that the two were partners, as he feels it’s immoral to pressure him in any way back into a relationship. & now Jasper’s like wtf no you can’t be doing this that’s my thing, stop doing my thing & talk to him.

Meanwhile: Hunter develops a new crush on Jasper, this time they’ve got even more trauma! They’re still not on board with the love of their life actually loving them back for unknown reasons & have taken up the very healthy hobby of having a mental breakdown & running away to almost get eaten by cave spiders whenever Hunter so much as smiles at them. Also, Ashi keeps giving them the stink eye, cause they’ve got similar opinions to Perri on this one & refuses to see their baby cousin hurt again.

& Meanwhile Hunter’s starting to develop a sort of maybe crush on Perri again too, & is doing his trademarked Hunter lovebug thing & IT’S BREAKING BOTH PERRI & JASPER’S HEARTS, HUNTER I KNOW YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DOING, BUT STAP HURTING MY BABY BOIS WH—

So yeah.

It’s a SITUATION.

kaj + (inverted) tropes: part two! * * i don’t know all the actual Official TM names for these tropes, so most are made up. also, you might notice the regular trope list (part 1 of this headcanon) is significantly longer. this is because kaj has a few main inverted tropes but tons more regular ones, since tropes are like atoms: they make up everything. i just wanted to focus on the few inversions that created her character and let the rest come naturally! under a read more for length. ** also as of 7/6/19 part one isn’t done yet. yes i know please don’t shame me ok IM GETTING TO IT

fridged woman (aka back from the dead)—

for this one i took inspiration from laura moon from american gods, with a few tweaks (love neil gaiman, but some of the things about her character are...a bit squicky). unlike a good number of women in media, kaj isn’t shoved over gently and pronounced dead so that a man can grow from her pain. in fact, she’s shot in the head twice, pronounced dead, & buried. while her “death” means more pain and character development for the characters surrounding her, it means pain and character development for her, too. truth be told, she survives a hell of a lot more than any average person should, especially one with her low luck stat. half of this is the fun and wacky way new vegas’ world works (obviously, no real person could survive all this), but also because of her good ol’ courier determination. things that should’ve fridged kaj but haven’t include: two shots to the head, numerous combat scrapes, being stabbed, having her brain/heart/spine removed, having a bomb collar attached to her neck, killing an entire fortification of trained legionnaires, stepping on landmines, etc etc. the courier is pretty much the bruce willis of fallout.

world ending vengeance—

specifically applies to certain characters. while most others who piss kaj off get the full brunt of her wrath (see: caesar, mr. house, elijah, general oliver, ulysses), benny, along with dr. mobius & the think tank & mcnamara*, get a pass. in fact, she lets him go not once or twice, but on three separate occasions, even knowing he’s likely to betray her again. the reason why? not even kaj knows. some people speculate it’s because she likes him / slept with him (incorrect; she liked house to a degree, and slept with caesar); others speculate it’s because they’re so similar (also incorrect; she shared an alarming number of similarities with ulysses & elijah). the theory that comes closest to the truth is that she pities him. it fits in line her past behavior with mobius & the think tank, who were physically unable to see the effects of their actions and thus were spared a horrible fate. likewise, kaj seems to have judged benny to be innocent in her own personal court, and though he continues to be a thorn in her side again and again, she refuses to “sentence” him for anything. it helps his cause that his plan helped her take over vegas, and he created yes man, one of the only living beings she’s ever fully trusted. also a slight inversion of kaj’s maneater / black widow trope; the one person she truly should seduce and kill, she doesn’t.

that said, benny doesn’t get away from their encounters without any punishment—after narrowly escaping being crucified, both kaj and benny have matching rope burns around their wrists. it’s her morbid idea of a joke.

*mcnamara doesn’t fit within this trope, but kaj spares the bos for veronica & christine’s sake, despite yes man’s warnings. also for the off chance that they might convert to being her allies (they don’t, and this choice helps lend itself to more BOS trouble all over the wasteland).

white man cowboy—

kind of a simple inversion that’s been done before, but an important one and one that i like a lot. for starters, the “john wayne” cowboy is a bastardization of a history that was made up of ethnic minorities and whitewashed for hollywood aesthetic (also fuck you john wayne). while none of my research has come up with anything about women of color or nonbinary people in the western scene, only moc (whether this is intentional or not, i’m not sure), i still wanted to write kaj as non-male. frankly, this is because i wanted her to be an inversion of tired tropes, and that included being a debonair, byronic woman / non gender conforming hero (think gentleman jack) instead of a debonair, byronic white dude. we’ve got 20 of those for every fleshed out woman/enby on screen, lbr. kaj is also a femme fatale, but only by coincidence; she’s more of a wandering heart breaker than a necessarily dangerous woman, much like many of the heroes on screen.

i also find that non-men of color are one of the most underrepresented minorities in fiction—even media that celebrates diversity simplifies them down (hamilton), or centers their narrative and entire purpose around a man (hamilton, again). nevermind nonbinary people / trans folk. for that reason, i wanted kaj’s story to be about a woman of color / someone who doesn’t conform to expectations and doesn’t allow herself to be put in the sidelines for a white person or a male to lead her life. and regardless of whether a woman filling this swaggering, womanizing cowboy role is accurate to history or not, fallout’s setting lends itself an air of exaggeration, so i felt it was appropriate to include her here, instead of arguing with people over whether someone like her existed in actual history (my suspicions say yes, and that these people have simply been erased from the narrative for the convenience of certain people’s feelings, but still).

smarter than you look / deadly doctor (this one actually has a tvtropes page! look it up!)—

from the deadly doctor page : ‘ surely the ultimate example of the morally ambiguous doctorate. one reason for this is due to all his/her training : while having advanced knowledge on the human body can be used to save people, it also gives all the knowledge on how to injure and kill people with minimal effort by knowing all the body's weak points. some more sympathetic examples equate to the medical version of a well-intentioned extremist, who may certainly have good (or at least sympathetic/understandable) intentions but ruthless medical ethics. ’

one of the most important things kaj took from her thorough education is medical training—unable to depend on anyone after being traumatized, trusting any doctor who happened along to treat her illnesses was out of the question. she was also smart enough to know the original kaj wouldn’t be around to heal her up forever. thus, she began her training as a self preservation instinct; but over time, as she grew and relearned how to be compassionate and empathetic, she decided to use healing for good, too. trained as a young girl by the original kaj, and then later trained officially as a combat medic by the ncr, kaj has spent a countless amount of hours inside army tents, healing wounds and assisting doctors with tough cases. she even keeps a medical bag on her person for exactly that sort of situation (especially since supplies in the mojave aren’t exactly easy to dig up). though she’s a big scientist in general (the big mt saw to that), medicine is her specialty. she’s even stitched up her own wounds, though it’s not something she particularly enjoys (it takes a lot of whiskey and something for her to bite down on).

for reference, consider this scene of anton from no country for old men (TW: he’s performing self surgery, so it’s pretty gruesome). though both anton and kaj’s lifestyles are rough and even sadistic at times, they both still have medical training—if not to protect others, then to at least protect themselves. and like anton, it shows kaj’s inability to trust anyone with her most important commodity: herself. this makes her surgery in the big empty doubly as horrifying, given she took specific pains for something like this to not happen. it’s why she refuses to leave without all of her organs (also, stubbornness). all of this is just one of the ways kaj is way more ... well, everything than she looks. which leads into...

underestimate me if you dare, aka femme fatale (sort of?)—

though fallout prides itself on being a soft reset on the world, people’s perceptions of minorities are still ... iffy, due to real world influences by the creators. thus, the people around kaj often jump to assumptions about her based on her identity—mostly, that she’s weak. once, it offended her, but now it’s a perception that she encourages. after all, she’s not flat out strong like your usual hero, but is more of a hamlet-type; smart, perceptive, fast, and willing to strike from the shadows. it’s hard to do any of that if you’re putting on a big performance about your power (though admittedly, she’s been known to go big or go home if she’s planning on killing everyone; if she’s not faking nice and telling you what you wanna hear, trouble’s ahead).

of course, the reality is that kaj is a powerhouse. but these perceptions about her supposed weakness are why posing as a legion member is so easy—those who think she’s weak underestimate her or keep their distance, which gives her leave to do what she wants. she’s viewed more like a pet than a person by most, and though it frustrates her at times to pretend, it also gives her leave to do more, than if she were to simply pose as a man.

all that said, kaj doesn’t exactly qualify as a femme fatale. most of her lovers are just information givers, and they escape from their interaction unharmed. kaj killing her bed mates is actually less likely than her just sparing them and letting them go, none the wiser. of course, you kill one tyrant (maybe two or three) and suddenly you’re a black widow—

Since it’s been way too long and I decided I was gonna restart it a while ago, here’s an old wip from one of the power ranger prompts i got like months ago (I WILL FINISH THEM), featuring Angel Grove’s favourite power couple and enby!Tommy:

Here was the plan: Find Billy at his locker and ask him out. Then get married and drive off into sunset and adopt five children, ideally.

What was expected: Billy would be flustered but say yes and he’d fall in love with Jason and then they’d love each other forever until the end of time and then on.

What actually happened: Tommy Oliver asked him out instead. And Billy said yes.

Somewhere in the back of Jason’s mind, a landmine was going off and it took every ounce of his being not to find Tommy, pin them to the wall and kill them. Partly because he knew that Tommy, while new, was still essential to the team. But also because murder wouldn’t get him any closer to Billy.

Despite obviously being the best option in the scenario.

“So, Billy.” Jason rocked back on his heels. “Are you excited?”

Billy nodded eagerly. “Yeah!” He grinned and lowered his voice just a bit. “I always kinda thought Tommy was cute but I didn’t know if they’d like me so I didn’t feel like asking.” He pressed his books to his chest. “I mean, I don’t normally care about rejection. People have feelings and we’re all entitled to emotions, right? But rejection within a close friend group isn’t a good thing all the time because sometimes the friend group feels like they have to pick a side and Tommy’s new!” Billy cocked his head to the side. “I wouldn’t want them to lose us because of something that’s completely natural in life.”

Jason’s voice fell out of his throat like it’d been through a wood chipper. “Oh.”

Billy frowned. “Are you okay? You sound sick. Are you sick?”

Jason cleared his throat. “No, Billy. I’m fine.”
