sea snake is a bit too obvious (and too boring)

so i made him based on some kind of lionfish??? (bc something something venomous marine animal) also with a LOT of creative liberties i made with how the fish looks like

let’s also give his fins some rips and tears here and there bc what are the implications of that??? that’s for you 🫵 to decide

Syrens can’t speak on land.

Rain gets summoned and isn’t used to not being able to talk. He’s a deep-sea Ghoul, rarely breaking the surface of the water so he’s only ever gone short periods of times not being able to speak.

Water Ghouls have their own type of sign language so they can commune above water and even under the water if they’re hunting.

When Rain is summoned he is not only silenced due to the amount of time he has to spend above water, but because none of the other Ghouls know sign, and the sign the humans have is different and makes no sense to Rain.

Rain also can’t write been as water, paper and ink don’t exactly mix so he never learned.

He just resigns to nodding and shaking his head and trying to mime as best as he can.

That’s until one day when the Fire Ghoul that has a Water’s name sneaks into his room and raises his hands, making the familiar shapes of infernal sign.

“I’ll be your voice. The voice I never had when I was summoned.”

I tried to read Gotham Sirens because I really wanted to see Selina and the girlies, and because I've heard that it's really good, but I honestly couldn't get past the first issues.

I just can't make myself read it when every damn page looks like this:

Like, I get it, they're attractive characters, but there's no need to dedicate one of every three panels to a close up of their asses. I couldn't deal with the dissonance of "this is a story about three powerful and amazing women finding strength in their friendship" with "let's sexualize the hell out of them to the point where it's ridiculous".

"They don't need no man!.... but we're still going to show them through the male gaze" - The editors, probably.

The huarvaa writing got me thinking about an aquatic zeta showing up in a similar way (washing up injured near civilization)

Would anyone even make sense of what they are? Or would everyone assume that they're just a weird selkie?

they would likely be thought of as a particularly hairy phocid and treated as such until it became clear they were something else... if they were able to get out of there asap they would, as they cannot handle 'society' of any kind (they cannot even handle the company of other aquatic zetas ... it's why there's so few of them, and they did not develop the pack structures of their terrestrial cousins and therefore the 'social brain' which was excised from the original generations of zeta).

if they were too injured to escape they would not live very long after that, failing to thrive. many societies feature these guys in their legends as tricksters or malicious spirits who trick you into thinking they're a friend but when you swim close it's a strange monster... i don't think the treatment of one would be kind at a place like the spire or a polar pelagic village, but some cultures would have empathy for difference

Lily is the like. Exact opposite of Scarlette even in height its so weird not shipping the shortass for once but this ship has infact been very fun for me thank you @soratsuart for encouraging me cgkgjddgj

They have so many parallels when I put lily in twst and it just encourages me. Yes this ship MAY have first started cuz I went "oh wait I have a foxgirl adjacent character this could be funny"

I made a render of the new self-insert I mentioned a couple of days ago, now that I've finally designed and constructed a reference model for her! This is Fioritura, or just Fiori for short - she's a siren inhabiting the waters around the town of Crop Haven, specifically being sighted near to the castle, for some reason. That "some reason" may or may not be a certain human servant who arrives there in the second year.. who knows?~

This render was quite tricky to get right, to the point that I actually had to try it twice with a different set of effects - but I was quite happy with how it turned out in the end. I hope it's therefore alright to use my tag list for this, even though it isn't explicitly a selfship render!

I started answering in the tags of the reblog but as always I yap too much so: Yes! In NMCTTS world, they’re like another branch of the same specie. They are less known in human mythology because:

1. they live in smaller pods and were more weary of humans from the start

2. they’re less likely to be blamed for the downfall of an entire fishing economy by “sinking” ships

3. fresh water is less scary than the sea/ocean so they’re associated with something less powerful.

They’re probably more present in local myths and behind some belief about naiads. They're seen as a lesser threat, more in the criptid range than dininity, which means they have been less hunted too.
