coachella 2025 day 2 weekend 1 thoughts:

ahoy there!

back at it again and i have to say, clairo and yo gabba gabba have my heart today.

i started the couchella stream with tink, weezer, and a little bit of jimmy eats world. weezer had my attention though, because i just love hearing their music. a weezer deep dive is needed for me.

my mom, little sister, and i loved yo gabba gabba because of my little sister. it was always playing on nick jr. when she was a tiny bean and me and mom would be going crazy over it. when we heard muno’s song bugs we were hooked. we even saw them live. i went into their set with pride.

i hope they perform party in my tummy.

looking at the crowd they pulled for their set this time, (aside from those who were waiting for next set i guess lol) it makes me so damn happy they’re able to have anyone having a good time no matter their age. the song while toodie was pissed slapped. didn’t like the fact that kammy’s mike wasn’t working it seemed, though. biz markie is missed since he used to be on the show often, but having flavor flav there was golden. can’t believe they actually did BUGS. i was giggling like an idiot lmao.

hearing don’t bite your friends actually fully took me out. i will say kammy is an amazing dancer though, i really liked how the choreography is very hip hop centric, paired greatly with the songs from yo gabba gabba’s musical catalogue.

i was wondering if dj lance rock was going to come out. my jaw dropped when he did. it was sooo cool seeing him again. AND thundercat!!!! at this point this stage is taking it. i thought it was funny how most of the guests mike’s save for flav, you couldn’t really hear them on stage, but you could hear them talking backstage??? ahhh, the week one issues. the guests went crazy at this set alone though.

this entire set ranks high on my “would like to experience on edibles” list.

also why was there a clown on stage

anyway, it was time to head to the main stage to watch charli xcx and eat curry chicken. i also have jerk chicken and mac and cheese egg rolls. i’m just out here living.

it was at this point that i, for some reason, realized i type so fast since i’m chasing my thoughts that things may not come out right. whoops.

charli xcx’s set was everything but i figured it would be. it was a blast going through all of the highlights from brat and the remixes, with talk talk, girl, so confusing, and guess, all having guest appearances from troye sivan, lorde, billie eilish, some of my favorite highlights within the album. i love watching her get lost in her performances as she steps away from her party girl persona for just a second to let the art take over. ending the stage with “please don’t let it be over” to brat summer almost broke me.

clairo is next. i fell in love with her music after randomly watching eric the young gawd over on youtube review charm. a video that i watched by chance had given me an opportunity to listen to what would become one of my favorite albums of last year. hearing juna during this set will make me ascend single-handedly. this entire experience is what made me want to share my thoughts on music on a consistent basis, no matter the platform.

having bernie sanders as the opening act along with one of the youngest members of congress for clairo was awesome. everybody booing dump >>>>> her and the band sitting on stage for a second with glasses of wine was a mood. i also really want her boots. clairo is so cutesy and i think starting off with second nature really cemented that. terrapin was a fucking treat live. the set itself felt very sophisticated. exquisite. juna hit all the right spots just as i thought it would and the band really went off.

because of how great juna sounded, i think i’m going to rewatch clairo’s entire set in the morning. amazing amazing amazing.

japanese breakfast was the next act on the list for the morning. i’m feeling a bit more relieved than i did on friday since the stream will be more dedicated to me checking out acts i’m not so familiar with since my list of must sees aren’t as long. this also means more time to practice the guitar today. yay!

while this set was starting i had apple by charli xcx stuck in my head. still thinking about that performance! for a more gentle start into the day, japanese breakfast was a good pick. very easy going feeling with their set. i did see a little bit of shoreline mafia’s set and that seemed pretty fun.

just for funzies i went to salute’s set for a bit. i love seeing black people dj so much. i’m not sure at what point i joined in on the set but i was having fun from that moment on. after hearing heaven in your arms i said i needed to rewind this set from the beginning and downloaded the song. i was not expecting for this to hit as good as it is. got me dancing and shit early in the morning.

i think it’s hilarious how many times kendrick’s music has come up throughout the festival so far. t-pain sampled tv off and it was awesome. also appreciated them playing a little bit of pyt by michael jackson. i think t-pain is hilarious from a few of the clips i’ve seen of him streaming. i quote “DO SOMETHING ELSE” to myself all the time. i did cringe a little when i realized there’s people out here that know t-pain as a streamer and not a musician and a stellar ass singer, auto tune or not. that’s crazy.

there were a lot of cool samples and transitions in this set. i forgot how much i loved can’t believe it and shawty with plies. hits for me in my childhood.

i’ve already been hearing really great things about green day’s set so i was excited to check that out. to my surprise we get even more bohemian rhapsody. i ain’t mad at it. appreciated the *emperial march* from star wars being thrown in the intro. sick stuff.

american idiot has always been a great song, but it really hits now. also shoutout to brooke!

i do remember hearing a lot of green day on radio disney after school, playing habbo hotel or playing those doll dress up games online. another nostalgic stage. the feeling i get when watching a band play live is kind of unmatched. this is why i love live music.

i also didn’t want green day’s set to end. i literally said “nooooo” when billie started introducing the band.

glad to hear wake me up when september ends and good riddance.

next was enhypen. i like a few of their songs but i haven’t heard too many, so i’m down to check them out. bite me is still a massive bop and sounded really good live. they seemed really excited to be performing. it’s always interesting to me when k-pop groups perform at coachella because of the way their normal stages are structured. i like seeing them let loose a bit more in this type of setting.

after watching these sets, i totally rewatched clairo’s. can’t wait to see it again next week. there’s a few from today that i’d rewatch again, along with t-pain’s set. apparently he streamed getting ready for coachella in terms of rehearsals and everything on twitch. so i’m off to watch this (hopefully if it’s still up) until day 3!!!

as the day went on i didn’t get to discover too many new artists, but that’s definitely happening next week too!

If you don’t mind non-ship fics, some of my favorite works in the fandom are

• Count the days as they go by by in_in_in_in_in_in — George-centric fic, quite a bit of Britcedes, features a lot of the Mercedes team members

• One thousand laps of Jeddah by in_in_in_in_in_in —Also George-centric, time loop fic of Jeddah 2023

• Icarus by WinterLantern (EirianErisdar) — Wingfic AU, Daniel-centric. This is my absolute favorite when it comes to F1 rpf works; words really can’t describe the love I have for it. It’s beautifully written and features a lot of different drivers/duos on the grid, like Maxiel, Charlos, Galex, Jenson/Nico/Lewis, etc.

• don't ever let them steal your joy (and your gentle ways) by sirjaythegay — Lance-centric, takes place when Seb was driving at AM. This actually features Lance/Lewis but it’s pretty minor until the end.

• I try to get back to the things you said by Bluejay141519 — George-centric, and similar to the one before it has background George/Lewis but mostly reads as platonic because it’s pre-relationship.

For fics with ships (some of these are omegaverse, fair warning if that isn’t your thing)

• let me go gently by cockroach_hyung (uaigneach) — Logan/Oscar, AU where Logan struggles with Chronic pain.

• Small Things by Bluejay141519 — George/Lewis/Toto, omegaverse. This fic contains a number of heavy topics so double check the tags if you consider reading it. It’s also open-ended.

• I've got some real estate here in my bag by mercurial_cool — Logan/Oscar, the boys go on a road trip & get together.

• 5 times Lando didn't realise he works for two mob bosses +1 time he finally gets it by lewisshamilton — Lando-centric, Lando/George. This series is cute & funny.

• Keep Holding On To Me by colors_of_feeling, sunnyrabbit — Logan/Benny, personally one of my favorite Logan fics.

• you let me in, and baby that`s when by betzykielberg — Charles/Carlos, omegaverse. Fake relationship AU where they have to go into witness protection & fake being married while falling in love. This one also has some TWs with Charles having trauma from a past relationship. This is my favorite Charlos fic.

• In for a penny, in for a pound by chiliconcarlos — Charles/Carlos, another fake relationship AU. Charles is going to his brother’s wedding, his ex girlfriend is there with her new fiance so he hires an escort (Carlos) to go with him, etc etc. This is my 2nd favorite Charlos fic!

• will o’ the wisps by autumnapricot — Charles/Max, omegaverse. Another TW for heavy topics (you can check the fic tags).

Sorry, this list got kind of out of hand. Some of these are individual works & some are series. I tried to include enough fics that you could hopefully find one or two you like even if we have different tastes or anything.

I feel like I’ve seen a lot of hate/criticism go around for TTS lately from fans and non-fans, so I wanted to ask what are your favorite themes about the show, and what are the main reasons you’d recommend it to someone?? Love your blog!!!!!

If I'm entirely honest, I'm not sure I'd recommend it to people. There would be a lot of caveats before I did, such as, "If you don't mind x thing," or "If you're interested despite y thing."

If there's one thing I do adore about the series, though, it's that Eugene does get a backstory. It's not developed as much as I would like, but the show went out of his way to give him a best friend he's known since childhood and a crime lord he used to work for and a woman he almost married, who is the daughter of the crime lord, which means he would have married into the crime family. That is so interesting, for real, and opens up a lot of questions that go through my head way more often than I talk about. What made him and Lance go separate ways? Because Eugene was clearly not a team player in the movie. He could work with people, sure, but he had zero qualms double-crossing them to take all the wealth and glory for himself. What exactly went down with Stalyan? Lance describe it as "stole The Baron's prized Stalyan." And yes, I know full well that when they wrote "Big Brothers of Corona," they had not yet planned for Eugene to have an ex-finace, so the whole stallion/Stalyan thing was a retroactive decision. But the question is still there! In "No Time Like the Past," young Eugene was 15 and had a thing for Stalyan, but they seemed to not quite be dating yet, like he was still trying to impress her. But the prologue of "Big Brothers of Corona" takes place "eight years ago," and we now know that Eugene was 23-24 in season one, which means the prologue took place when he was 15-16, and The Baron already had it out for him at that point, so... when was he supposed to have been marrying Stalyan??? So much intrigue! There's so much lore there, and none of it relies on magic or what's going on with Rapunzel to exist!

So, I guess the primary thing I'd recommend about it is getting more Eugene content, period. Even when I don't like the way the story is going, I love Zac's voicework and Eugene's sass and sarchasm.

And so, dovetailing off of that, the series does have good New Dream content. I might not like how all of it is done, but there's so much about it that I do like. Today I was driving to lunch and the score from the epilogue proposal came on, and I teared up. That scene still makes me feel so much (affectionate).

Back in the day, there were a lot of people who only watched the episodes that Varian was in. I can easily see myself only watching episodes that are New Dream-centric, or feature Lance prominently.

And you know what? I'm not going to pretend that the soundtrack isn't rockin', or that the animation isn't some of the most beautiful I've seen in recent years in television series. Whether I like the plot or not, the acting is superb.

first impression - oh what a precious babygirl. oh what’s this? he has problems???

impression now - (years of inner turmoil later, blood dripping out of my ears and nose while typing this) what a precious babygirl! He has problems!

favorite moment - god almighty how could I possibly choose… ok here’s what i think i’m going with. you know when after remire when he cracks for real in front of everyone for the first time. and then if you talk to him at the monastery he’s like “wow I’m so terribly sorry you had to see that side of me it’s just that I can’t stop thinking about tearing the flesh from the bones of our enemies. anyway what did you want to talk to me about? something about a dance contest? oh please for the love of god do not ask me to dance.” just. like. that’s my boy in a nutshell right there :)

idea for a story — i am going to lovingly redirect you all to ao3 user reflektion, where at the time of writing there are no works that do not feature him! ok that was a bit of a cop out. a dream that i doubt i’ll ever realize is a collection of ficlets about all the different ways he could have lost his eye.

unpopular opinion — this is so hard bc like. there’s 3h fandom at large and then there’s the little corner of fandom I’m part of that is in general pretty dimitri centric and what would qualify as unpopular varies greatly depending on where you are. here’s what i’ll go with that feels like it might run slightly against the current of how people on here treat him in general: dimitri is not the main character or “hero” of fe3h. azure moon tells his story and it does a fantastic job at that but it isn’t telling the most comprehensive story of what could or should become of fodlan as a whole. I don’t know that him becoming king is the best outcome. It’s just the one I focus on the most personally, because I am obsessed with him.

favorite relationship - i think uhhhh. i think everyone here knows. that I’m a little not normal for dimilix. maybe more than a little. unquestionably that is my favorite dimitri pairing. the depth to mine there is endless i mean literally endless, every single day i have a new thought about them that knocks me out. what don’t they give me. what can’t they do. childhood friends to childhood enemies to teenage divorcees to pining lovers to depending on the route even worse enemies the cause of each others literal deaths OR lovers or king and advisor lance and shield closest friends two halves of a whole fbdvsxfjgbdjdj….

that being said ofc i have appreciation for plenty of his other relationships as well. dimidue is godlike and not comparable to any other relationship I’ve ever seen in anything. his… vassal. i love his relationship with all the lions. i would also like it if hilda braided his hair.

u ate that up no notes. it is really just personal preference though :( i do think some klance stuff is good but i was also disappointed at the amount of sheith and then nothing about ANY other dynamic. i love romelle and lotor and pidge and hunk!! i want to know about the paladins dynamics outside of fighting!! coran and allura? how earth and aliens interact? adashi pre kerberos?? matt being the only human amongst the freedom fighters??? i hope i can continue to create fanarts depicting these other relationships but my ENTIRE feed is klance even if i do not follow it. i made a tumblr for vld BECAUSE vldtwt is pretty much just keith-centric. theres one prominent adashi artist, but everyone else draws and posts klance.

lance is not my favorite but he has stuff going on outside of keith, and vice versa. the show set up a lot of interesting plots just to drop or fumble them i thought the fandom would go crazy with theories or fics or whatever!! kallura has some really interesting moments especially with galra/altea history, pidge and hunk bffs who probably got super close emotionally considering all the time they spent together doing tech stuff, even shiro bonding with lance off screen to the point where he tried to reach out to him first. i dont want to seem better than klancers because i just enjoy different things, but i do wish there were more content surrounding these stuff

being into voltron but not liking klance is the latest and greatest circle of hell

A good example of how much this fandom shifted in its opinion of lance and how not invested the fandom is in him as a character is by comparing any lance-centric and keith-centric character posts.

If someone posts about lance, just about his character or reactions to scenario and looking for introspection, the post will get 1 or 3 notes/likes/metric. It will inevitably have someone bring up keith and how he would react to the situation and make mention of klance or shipping.

If someone makes a keith character post about his reactions/pov and looking for introspection, that post will get a crazy amount of notes, no one will bring up lance or klance cause rightfully it’s not about that.

This is the same with art pieces. Same artist can draw the boys at separate times but if keith isn’t in the lance art piece it’ll never be noticed.

There’s just a sad shift in fandom thinking Keith is worth more in value and can stand alone if he wants to but Lance’s character isn’t worth as much unless he’s in the ship or Keith is included. And with post season 8 and him dating allura, they think all his bad traits outweigh his good so there’s no value in giving him the time and care.

It really fostered this environment where Lance’s positive canon traits or distinguishing canon scenes are just overlooked and ignored. Or worst, they’re given away to other characters. I guarantee you that if you asked klancers about lance and the blade of mamora they will have no idea that he canonly led them on a mission and protected them from slander and scorn. And people still react to Lance dying for allura that one time as brand new information they never heard of, or it isn’t as important as Keith almost dying for the team because he did it for Allura. Or they take his and keith’s dynamic or him being the comforter to his teammates and gave it to James Griffin or Hunk.

The way the fandom dismisses his issues is already frustrating(having seen things like Lance has no problems or cause to feel bad or to dissect) evident enough but when klancers tie his worth to keith like they do with any of the other characters, the state of the fandom just makes me sad. He’s not a character unless he does something for Keith otherwise he can easily be replaced by any other character, who people also don’t invest time into, but isn’t as “mean” to poor Keith.

Don’t get me wrong I love Keith a lot. He’s one of my favorite boys of all time. But it’s hard to deny the way the klance fandom currently treats him and lance is exactly like how the showrunners do.

So I was thinking about this while reading this post, and initially I was gonna say that I guess this just didn't enter my social media sphere because I mainly post comics, so I don't see the difference in likes for individual art pieces etc.

BUT

Then I started thinking about some of the comments I've gotten on my ongoing comic GONE, and it...kindof fits.

I got a couple comments directed at Keith that were in the vein of "just go hug your man, get over yourself," but they soon switched into those same comments directed at Lance.

And basically the whole comic is meant to showcase how traumatic it would be to almost lose someone you love, and how Lance wouldn't just be able to bounce back from it. It is meant to show that Lance's anger and grief and guilt are all emotions to be taken seriously. That those are valid things to feel, and that it's not just immediately going to be okay.

And I can't even tell you how many comments I got directed at Lance that were basically pushing him to just be okay already. To just get over it. Telling him "what's your problem? Keith's alive and that's all that matters, right?"

(The whole thing basically turned into a study of how people react to physical trauma vs mental trauma, but that's a whoooole different rant subject).

I think the part I'm having the hardest time comprehending is how it has come up several times that Lance is being written as an [insert character here] type. And I just...???

I love Keith, too, don't get me wrong, but Lance is so much more fun to write and to draw because he can have all the emotions, and they are all strong. And imo he had the most potential for growth and character development out of the whole team - which means that they gave us hints of all that in canon, even if they didn't follow through.

So actually, you know what? I'm just gonna link my friend's fic here, because if you haven't read it already and want some seriously well written Lance validation that makes total sense, you should read this fic: Pitch Black. (you should read it anyway)

ur opinion on 5 (or however many) most prevalent/aggravating/etc. trends you've seen in the tts fandom

ohoho. in no particular order,

#1: "they did lance so dirty! he deserves better!"

ok.

the sentiment is correct but it's not the thought that counts!!

#2: character bashing in service of angst or whump

this is not a tts-specific phenomenon but it feels exceptionally pervasive in tts fic, perhaps partly because there are so many different characters who attract this sort of treatment. frederic, quirin, nigel, andrew, the captain, cassandra, rapunzel, zhan tiri, and the rest of the separatists are all characters i've seen get this treatment of being warped into abusive, sadistic, or utterly callous caricatures of themselves to generate angst for the author's faves, and with certain characters (frederic) (andrew) (zhan tiri) it's almost impossible to find fic that DOESN'T do this to them, and it's... very tiring. it makes finding fic that i actually enjoy something of a chore, because while there are tags i can filter out (a la "zhan tiri being an asshole" or "bad parent quirin"), most people who write this sort of fic don't tag their character bashing. it's obnoxious.

#3: the "shut up about varian!" problem

i like varian. i think he's a neat character. i even bumped him up to main character status for bitter snow. but there's a subset of his fans who act like the entire show revolves around him and it exhausts me.

like, no, the show is not badly written because moonvarian didn't happen. the hair stripe isn't that deep. varian being in s2 more wouldn't have fixed the pacing problems. cassandra using the truth serum on varian wasn't somehow worse than anything else she did in s3, and it's weird that there's pockets of the fandom where the mind trap is seen as this awful thing cass does to varian? hello?? it's weird that people rip rapunzel apart for the crime of not making varian her top priority at all times. it's weird that there are so many fics where zhan tiri is obsessed with varian to the point of calling him "young demanitus." it's weird that momtiri was a thing at all. it's weird that there's so much fic and fandom chatter about [eugene/rapunzel/lance/cassandra] being an adoptive parent or sibling figure or even literal sibling to varian. like... there are certain corners of the fandom where it's All Varian All the Time and you literally cannot bring up other characters or plot points without someone spinning the conversation back around to varian and like, while i get the impulse to go This Is My Favorite Character And I WILL NOT Shut Up About Them, i feel like with varian it goes to this weird extreme?

and it just sort of puts me off him, a little, because it's so prevalent that it's hard to avoid without like fully blocking all varian content, which i don't want to do because as noted i do actually like him! i just don't think he's the center of the tts universe!

#4: demanitus x zhan tiri

just... just no.

people really read that zhan tiri would have a female VA in s3 and went "oh so were she and demanitus lovers?" and people really saw the flashback in plus est where he banished her to acid hell and went "so they were in love, right?" and i just... seriously?!

this is the one silver lining to the fandom's disinterest in giving zhan tiri any character development at all

but like Fuck Off She's A Lesbian

#5: the widespread, utter disregard cass fans & esp cassunzels have for cassandra's boundaries & feelings

i've talked plenty about this one before but my god the amount of cass-centric fic out there, written by cass fans, that paints cassandra as this maladjusted social outcast with no idea how feelings work who just needs rapunzel to come in and tear down her walls so she can learn the joys of interpersonal connection is INFURIATING. or cass-centric fic written by cass fans where cass takes the moonstone as a self-sacrificing bid to "save" rapunzel and her anger afterwards gets painted as just... something zhan tiri manipulates into feeling and really underneath she's secretly miserable and pining for rapunzel's love? the amount of cass-centric fic written by cass fans where cass having boundaries and being frustrated, upset, and angry when they're trampled over is portrayed as cass being maladjusted, or cass not being able to accept that rapunzel loves her, or cass having trust issues, or cass needing to learn to let people in - ffs, so much cass-centric fic is flat out UNREADABLE because of this.

and this isn't even getting into the romanticization of the princess/knight dynamic that is rife in requited cassunzel circles, because i guess the exact same dynamic that destroyed cassandra's mental health in canon is peachy if she and rapunzel are dating? or how eugene's constant low-grade nastiness towards cass is interpreted as a sibling dynamic, or how the average cass fan doesn't think rapunzel Maiming Her and then Refusing To Apologize and Openly Blaming Cassandra is a good enough reason for cassandra to take the moonstone if zhan tiri hadn't stepped in to "manipulate her" into it, or how rapunzel is framed over and over again in cass-centric s3 fic as "saving" cassandra from her own anger.

like. christ. i'm so over it.

Best Voltron Legendary Defenders fics I've read so far [klance centric] :

Summary: After a run-in with an angry queen, Keith is left to travel through alternate realities — ones that are entirely too good to be true — because in each and every one of them, he's dating Lance. Keith struggles to find his way back to his own reality, all while trying not to fall more and more in love with Lance in every new one he experiences.

Note: Um hello!?! This fic was absolutely amazing and I loved the whole story trope. It was executed so perfectly and it's just amazing. Reading the tags for the first time I was like "wtf" skskskss but then actually reading the fic omg mwah, chefs kiss. Loved this story.

Summary: It’s been two years since the first case of the Great Plague was recorded, and one year since the Silence began. Despite this, and despite the fact that he can’t remember the last time he heard from his family, Lance still holds out hope for finding them. Keith, on the other hand, thinks holding out hope for anything is useless. He hasn’t had the best of luck with depending on people in his life, after all. Which is maybe why it’s so surprising when he finds himself depended on Lance and everyone else they come across

Note: I don't usually read Apocalypse aus because I am a coward and people can die holy shit it's scary. But THIS had honestly changed my mind. I loved this so much

Summary: Lance McClain constantly dreams of the day he'll finally meet his mysterious soulmate. They don't say much, if anything at all, but they leave him with gorgeous paintings temporarily tattooing his skin. It's not exactly the situation he hoped for, but when he feels the connection between them, he can't bring himself to resent them. As much as he wishes his soulmate would just talk to him, he's resigned himself to being patient. In the meantime, he has a loving family and good friends to help him get by.

Keith Kogane dreads the day he'll finally meet his obnoxious soulmate. He's just an art student who's struggling to find his place in the world. There's so much he hasn't been able to control in his life, and the thought of having a soulmate, just another thing in his life which he also has no control over yet can't do anything about, is a little terrifying. So he ignores the words that occasionally appear on his skin. He has other things to focus on: like being a new student at a big university where his childhood friend and step-brother go

Note: Have I mentioned that my favorite trope is soulmates. Please this fic is so so so good. 5 star rating it was AMAZING. I'd recommend listening to Invisible String by Taylor Swift while reading this. It just sets the mood.

Summary: Becoming “hook-up buddies” with Lance Sanchez was just supposed to be a small, insignificant fraction of Keith’s life. But of course, things don’t work out that way at all.

aka a Friends w/ Benefits AU that nobody asked for where Lance wears sleeveless hoodies, plays basketball in abandoned parking lots, and follows his dreams, and Keith comes from a high class, reputable family who never let him have any dreams of his own. They go home with each other and don't expect it to matter until it totally does.

Note: KSJDJSNSJS OH BOY THIS ONE. One of the early fics I'd ever read for Voltron and I loved it. Please, it's a whole lot of smut so proceed with caution.

Summary: Keith has a lot going on between his duties as class president, way too much homework, and being groomed to take over his mother's corporation. He’s gotten very used to pushing things down and ignoring them in favor of doing what is expected of him, so it’s easy to shove that whole ‘gender’ thing he’s been dealing with lately to the very far corners of his mind. He doesn’t have time to think about it anyway, and he DEFINITELY doesn't have time for the loud, pushy, overfamiliar showboat of a new kid who just crashed into his school and his life. No matter how attractive he is.

Lance is lucky; not many kids from his neighborhood get the chance to attend the prestigious Merriweather Academy - and by ‘many’ he means ‘zero.’ Winning the lottery for a scholarship was a combination of his own hard work and sheer luck. He knows it’s going to be a culture clash, but it’s just for a year, right? If it means getting into a better university, he can suffer through anything.

Until he starts falling for the prickly class president, and has to question everything about who he is, and what this might mean for his future

Note: please if I were to recommend any fic on this list it'd be this one. This story is beyond amazing it's so good seriously. Definitely give it a read. One of my favorites honestly. [Still ongoing tho]

Summary:

Lance has dreamed of travelling since the first time he heard stories from his family as a child. Now, having finally the time and money to do it, he goes on a trip to Europe to see some of the most culturally rich cities on the continent. Except he keeps bumping into the same guy over and over again, in random cities, doing stupid shit, and ultimately dragging Lance into his trouble, too.

Basically an AU in which Lance and Keith become impromptu travel buddies and get into trouble

Note: if you need a good breather fic that's just so amazingly refreshing from the long ass day you had then read this mf.

Summary: If it were anybody else, Lance would think they’re messing with him for fun.

But Keith is Keith, straight-forward and guileless. If he’s touching Lance more, it’s only because he’s gotten more comfortable. And on one hand, that’s great, that’s—Lance feels very honored. His heart is doing backflips and aerial stunts and everything. On the other, this is really not helping with his raging crush.

His breaking point turns out to be when Keith, exhausted after a day of subspace meetings, drops his head onto Lance’s shoulder and sighs.

It’s a sigh that says, now I’m comfortable, that admits, I’m recharging, that practically screams, you help.

Hands in his pockets, he lets Lance bear his weight as if he trusts Lance to handle it. Great. That’s just—how dare he. How dare he be so vulnerable with Lance? Who does that?

It’s so enraging that Lance just blurts out, “I’m going to need you to stop doing this before I fall in love with you even more, asshole.”

Keith freezes.

Or, five times Lance acknowledges his feelings for Keith and one time Keith reciprocates.

This is a writing reflection I’ve been doing for myself every year for the last four years. Its a positive boost to myself see how far I’ve come and look back on my progress for the past year and look forward to the new year.

This one was also part of Bad Things Happen Bingo and was an experiment. It’s POV of an oldest plance kid, canon verse. Her parents’ Paladin days come back to haunt them one night. Some cute family stuff too in there.

Ready to Dance (4135 words)

For the Valentine’s Day exchange! Post series. Lance tries to get back into the party scene and Pidge rescues him from a disastrous night.

Loopholes (5476 words)

Technically I didn’t write this fic this year, but a very kind reader asked if I would post this to Ao3, so it was my first fic of the year on Ao3. It’s Lotura! Originally a gift for a dear friend I’ve had since elementary school. It’s a fantasy AU where Lotor stumbles into Allura’s kingdom needing help.

Next to Me (7311 words)

Also for Bad Things Happen Bingo, this is probably one of my favorite fics of the year. This is the canon verse AU that went all wrong in s7, and Sendak succeeds in destroying Earth. Lance and Pidge end up not only his prisoners, but also two of the last humans in the universe. Ends open ended, but it became a series in the end!

Into Me (14248 words)

The sequel to the above fic. There are two versions, this and the one below. The title tells all. Lance and Pidge come to terms with their new life aboard Sendak’s flagship and do their best to keep the other comforted.

Respite of the Heart (4181 words)

A fic I have been wanting to write for a very long time. I love the concept of Pidge as a Disney Princess in the sense she has the forest guardian theme and all these animals love her. So there’s some play on that as the Paladins stop for lunch on their journey back to Earth in early s7. Lance comes to a realization and they have a chat surrounded by the animal friends. @anchoredtetherart did a phenomenal piece to accompany it. Please look at it in awe here.

The Hardest Part (3960 words)

For Bad Things Happen Bingo! An AU of the episode The Reunion where Pidge doesn’t return when she’s supposed to.

A Planned Sacrifice (4988 words)

Another Bad Things Happen Bingo. Canon verse. Pidge assumes that being a sacrifice for the ‘forest god’ is strictly ceremonial and at worst a wild animal. It’s actually Sendak, who no one has seen since Shiro shot him out of the Castle. He remembers Pidge and is far too pleased to see her again, tied up on a silver platter.

Almost Forgotten, but Not Gone (3946 words)

Bad Things Happen Bingo. AU sometime in s1 where Haxus isn’t as dead as Pidge thought.

Touch (7519 words)

Written for the Lance Goes Boom bang! It was inspired by @fenixseraph ‘s amazing art here! It’s a different take on The Way Forward, where Pidge and Lance are separated from the rest of the team and placed in their own cell. And the Red Lion causes issues.

An AU of The Castle of Cagliostro from Lupin the Third series. Lee, you have my thanks forever for making me watch this finally. Pidge is a literal princess whose kingdom is in the middle of an internal coup. Lance is a gentleman thief who rides with his best buds Hunk and Matt. Their paths are destined to cross again when Lance goes back to the castle he used to call home.

Game of Love (4593 words)

The most crack of the bunch. AU of Fall the of the Castle of Lions where Sendak and Haxus get away with it all. Pidge and Lance are prisoners on Haxus’ new ship, and Lance finds an opportunity for eventual escape when he learns that Haxus has a crush on his second in command. Operation matchmaker begins. (happy ending planned for all)

What Tides May Bring (20704 words)

Collab with the fantastic @anchoredtetherart for MerMay! Established plance as mermaids and guardians of their elements with adorable mer child. Then angst because they are all captured by a ‘research’ institute.

Seasons of Magic (16546 words)

I actually added a chapter this year! Ongoing collection of one-shots with mage Pidge who lives in the country and cultivates her plant magic and makes potions with the assistance of her dragon familiar, Lance. Mostly domestic fluff.

Too Soon and Not Soon Enough (11438 words)

Added another chapter this year to my Keith-centric AU. It’s basically VLD but five years early and they’re all literally child Paladins. Keith gets to meet Krolia earlier and its fun to go into tween friendships as they try and navigate the reality of their situation.

Seeds (48833 words)

Added a ton earlier this year. A collection of plance fics all or mostly under 500 words. All meant to be adopted by others if interest strikes. Covers many genres.

Written for the Pidge Angst Bang. My artist @alchemie0 did an outstanding job capturing the feel of the fic. Look at the art here! Canon verse AU where Pidge encounters Haxus, who has crashed on Earth. She helps him repair his ship in excitement and good faith, which he pays back by kidnapping her. For two years she survives as little more than a housepet on Sendak’s ship. Gen.

Who's Protecting Who? (28989 words)

Also technically not written this yeah, but posted. A collab with Hush waaaay back in 2018. It's a plance Altean AU with Pidge as distant royalty and Lance as a bodyguard.

A Dish Served Cold (21533 words)

Finally finished this one! Canon verse in which Pidge accidentally runs into Sendak on an isolated planet. Sendak takes advantage of this encounter and tries to return to the Empire with her in tow. Much Pidge whump. Gen

Reflections:

Best title

I still really really love Too Soon and Not Soon Enough (11438 words). Because it's too soon for the Paladins to be Paladins, and for Keith it's not nearly soon enough for Krolia to return. It just feels like it has a lot of heart to it. I hope I can keep it going, but my ideas are incredibly scattered for it.

Worst title

Touch (7519 words). Yeah it’s a play on ‘Don’t you touch her’ but it feels soooo dry.

Best/worst last line

Best: This was really, really hard choice this year, but ultimately, making up for the terrible title, its Touch (7519 words)

“It feels good to escape the ship with all of his teammates, secure in the knowledge that he has a way forward not just as a Paladin, but also with Pidge.”

- Not only did I manage to fit the title of the episode in there, it's got that hopeful tinge to it and reflects on personal growth both internally and with Pidge.

Worst: This one isn’t necessarily bad from Begin Again (Together) (4805 words), but it could be better. It didn’t get quite the epic sense I was hoping to pull from it.

“Okay,” he smirks, hand firmly on the throttle. “Operation save Earth starts now.”

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?

Definitely wrote way more. Even with posting two fic that are essentially the exact same, I still ended up writing nearly half of my total Ao3 word count this year. (330,000/670,000). Doing Bad Things Happen Bingo was a bit part of that - I was very inspired at the beginning of this year - but also there were many events I participated in (8 total!!) on top of my personal projects.

What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.

A really hard decision this year, because there are several that make me really happy. I think oddly enough though, it’s Game of Love (4593 words) because of its potential and how much crack it is. It has such whacky rom-com energy to it but also that underlying angst of the situation I can fall back on. My favorite trope to explore is what happens to the characters when they’re captured. I just really enjoy the concept and the challenge to make such a concept believable with minimal suspension of belief.

Not surprising because Ivy’s art is STUNNING.

Story most underappreciated by the universe?

I think that’s It Tasted Good (6785 words), the pikelavar fic. Pikelavar is underappreciated in general

Story that could have been better?

For all I was excited to write Sunshine (3831 words), it didn’t quite fall the way I had imagined in my mind. I don’t know if it was the structure or I was running out of steam or what. All i know is that I wanted more but all I could concentrate on was that scene where he’s caring for her in bed. Maybe I was just too ambitious.

Sexiest story?

No brainer it's Into Me (14248 words). Literally. Which really shocked me that it happened. Didn’t think I’d write any smut at all, let alone this year. This particular fic just kinda called out for it

Saddest story?

The prequel to the above fic: Next to Me (7311 words). How much more sad can you get than Earth being destroyed, being Sendak’s prisoners all while trying to tell each other ‘i love you’ without seeming weird because you’re the last humans in the universe.

Most fun?

I think it's Ready to Dance (4135 words). Just Valentine’s fluff and impromptu slow dancing in the park at night.

Story with single sweetest moment?

I’m picking What Tides May Bring (20704 words). Listen, mer Lance and mer Pidge playing with their mer baby in their domestic paradise is probably one of my favorite things I’ve ever written. Dad Lance has my heart.

Hardest story to write?

The last chapter of A Dish Served Cold (21533 words) was like pulling teeth. I’m pretty happy with it in the end but at the time man it was so hard.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?

I wrote smut. It was...weird? But also strangely calming. I wrote more for another fic but it's still a WIP. I definitely need to be in the mood to write it.

Proudest Achievement:

The Pidge Angst Bang. Resolve to Fly (75799 words). Look at that word count. I only wanted something under 3k at first, so it was just going to be Pidge meeting Haxus. But by the time I finished that part it was already 10k. So even though I was going through a rough part of my life, I just kept going and it ended up being my therapy. I’m really proud of the fic and I love my artists’ pieces. It really lifted my spirits. (You should all really go check out the Ao3 collection of all the bang stories and art they are AMAZING you won’t regret. If you love Pidge angst they are all must reads.)

What are your fic writing goals for next year?

I’d like to finish my Bad Things Happen Bingo card and then focus on my current WIP, that includes the Seeds collection. There are days I still feel a bit overwhelmed, and I’m still trying to find a routine after moving. I’d like to do more events too, but I think I need to be more selective about which ones I do. I don’t want to burn myself out.

Apart from that, I’d really like to try and give back to the community more. I’d like to start consciously writing fics for others without an event to go by.

Your stance on Lance fics is valid but also like. I got into the Voltron fandom more for the fics than for canon, so I ended up with Lance as my fav character even though I kinda disliked him in canon. I liked any Lance-centric ~uwu soft insecure boy Lance~ fic regardless of how it fit with the show bc I didn't care about canon anyway. I enjoy the narrative of "misunderstood soft boi is accidentally mistreated and then everyone realizes how great he is, actually". In other fandoms I hate ooc characters in fics but idk like... I liked the idea of Voltron as fodder for fanfiction better than the actual show. If I cared about the show more, Kieth would probably have been my favorite.

Gonna be honest, I can’t sympathize with this at all. You can do a lot better than reading fics that purposefully write everyone out of character just to make one character look better- why wouldn’t you want to read a fic where Lance gains self-confidence in himself because everyone recognizes the skills and talents he brings to the team without the need for them to be unnecessary mean at first? You’re kind of selling the guy short there, in my opinion.

Like. Lance’s problem isn’t that other people think he doesn’t contribute to the team, but that he thinks they do, and there’s a world of distinction there in that difference. Also it makes him into a boring, shallow one-dimensional character because Lance not only is insecure and underestimates his skills, but at the same time, he definitely over-estimates his skills in something that’s half-act, half earnest belief. It’s an interesting dichotomy and I don’t know why more fic authors just leave it lying on the floor like that!!! Do something with it!!

The war was hard. Its end is even harder. But when Lance breaks, Keith and the others are there to help him heal.

Somewhere along the way, Keith finds his place in the universe, Shiro gets his happy ending, and Lance learns to fall in love again.

And Lance knows it’s his fault. He started it, after all, but at least the biting term of endearment made sense when he was the one doing it. Keith had been talking to him like they were some old married couple. The kind who’ve been married too long and don’t love each other anymore and gripe over meaningless shit, only managing to piss each other off even further.

That’s why Lance called him dear. Because it made sense in the situation. It was a calculated insult. A strategic jab.

Keith, on the other hand, is weaponizing the term of endearment without any rhyme or reason, simply to get back at Lance.

Or: Keith and Lance have gotten into the habit of using pet names as condescending insults. They're not really terms of endearment.

Thank you!! Somewhere A Clock is Ticking is one of my fave things I've ever written and I legit cried during both the writing and editing process of that story so it makes me so glad you enjoyed it!

I'm really excited for this fic! I think Adam is such a good character to start with if you're working on your first because we know very little of his canon persona–and that means you get to unleash all your creativity to flesh him out. He can be from any background, speak any language, have little or a lot of family, etc. I love getting to create an Adam-sona anytime I write him in. Sometimes he's a calming partner, a stubborn and stern teacher, or a wine-uncle fun idea machine.

I have a LOT OF TIPS but I'll try to keep this to the point because really I could ramble for days on this subject so feel free to message me or hmu again for any follow up:

Write a story that you would want to read. I know this seems obvious but the easiest things for me to write are when I think "I want to read THIS in a fic and it's so specific that I will just go ahead and make it for myself and not care if anyone else likes it." Write for your own enjoyment, first and foremost.

Make a soundtrack first. I can only speak for myself but when I set up a story I also set up a playlist in my head and I write while listening to it. Sometimes I think of it like a movie soundtrack and different songs belong to different sections. IDK it helps me when I have to switch tone or POV or write a lot of action without dialogue? I sometimes do use those relaxing beats to study to soundtracks/streams, if that helps? I say try to avoid podcasts bc they can muss up your concentration with dialogue but to each their own. Hit shuffle and keep an eye (ear?) on what music works best for you!

Give your character a weird quirk or a strange habit or a funny story their parent/bff/sibling can tell from their childhood. Some of my personal favorite headcanons are: Keith loves Dolly Parton, Lance attempted to eat a jellyfish off the beach as a child, Allura puts milk in before tea, Shiro has a secret terrible sense of humor and can't hold his liquor, etc. You can even make one up, the more specific the better. Right now I'm poking around with a story idea involving Lance being really into limericks.

You are going to project at some point, and that is so okay. Put a story in about character A and character B doing a silly thing you and your friend/cousin/whoever did when you were a kid. Make that quirk be something you do (like maybe you're a 30-something college graduate that still lisps and stutters when she tries to say the word 'specific' haha what? Who?) But seriously, stories that have a grounding in reality help the reader suspend disbelief especially if you're working with a fantasy/scif-fi canon or AU. Writing Adam as a time-traveling were-panther? Make him that, but he's also super-into Magic: The Gathering and he teaches all his fellow time-traveling were-cats how to play and now they all kick his ass and he sometimes regrets it. It gives your reader a way to relate to your character and they'll be more willing to suspend disbelief for zany hijinks or they won't see someone that's too perfect or too invincible.

Your audience can infer more than you realize, so don't be afraid to not tell them if something is funny or sad or beautiful. Just write what it is and let them make their conclusions. Tell them that the first kiss between two characters was messy and wet and someone bit the other's lip but then they rest their foreheads together and laugh and just breathe, hands intertwining. You don't have to say 'they did so romantically', because if you describe a thing that you think is sweet or funny or romantic in an honest way, it reads through.

To quote the Beastie Boys, I like my sugar with coffee and cream? But yeah, always good to have prepared some writing snacks and beverages and take breaks!

ooooh keith. full disclosure, while i know a lot of spoilers for things via cultural osmosis, in my full watch of the show i’m only in the first couple eps of s5 so idk about how things play out later

favorite thing about them: I love his passion, and his anger, and the potential he had in an arc about learning to channel his emotions healthily and productively, and learning to work with others as part of a team rather than... not learning to do that and being a leader who winds up leading his team because he hares off to do his own thing and they have no choice but to follow. (granted, it’s possible that he does actually learn these things, I still don’t know how the whole kuron thing is gonna play out so We’ll See)

least favorite thing about them: How much his Lone Wolf thing gets played up, despite his arc ostensibly being about him learning....not to be a lone wolf anymore. Like idk there were a lot of times in the first three seasons I thought he was learning this and then he Didn’t and i just. -fist clench- por que

favorite line: I don’t have any off-hand, the show hasn’t had any quotes that really Stuck Out to me (no iconic lines that I could quote after just seeing them once), and this is my first watch so I haven’t committed any to memory. I do remember liking his speech to Lance encouraging him to keep the Red Lion after Shiro came back, though, even if I never did like the whole changing of the guard thing. (Allura should’ve been the Black Paladin dammit.)

brOTP: I really enjoy his bond with Shiro (while I don’t ship it romantically, it has nothing to do with their ages, I just don’t really have an investment in romantic ships in this show that don’t have to do with Allura bc she’s the primary point of my investment in the series), and their friendship and the hints I’ve seen at their past mentorship bond.

OTP: I will say right now that it’s not exactly ‘otp’ level for me, but like I said above the only ships I’m really invested in are Allura-centric, and I deeply love the potential that Kallura had before it was evidently discarded (interestingly enough, Keith/Allura was the main ship of the original Voltron, where Allura was pale-skinned and also didn’t die at the end, but you know that’s just very interesting to me) in favor of kataang-light, now with somehow Even Less Agency, but whatever this isn’t about that. At any rate, Keith’s galra heritage makes their potential relationship very interesting, both from a standpoint of Allura having to move past her inherent dislike/distrust of him due to his blood (and like, the fact that he didn’t even know he had Galra blood should really have mitigated this somewhat, but that’s another story), and anyway, they had a lot of really sweet moments and I’m very sad none of that potential was explored later on.

nOTP: This is mostly because of the fandom, but I just have this kneejerk dislike of Klance. I don’t like the way the fandom acts like they were baited (I’m over four seasons in, yall, and I’m not seeing anything that could even reasonably be read as romantic development, and like people can ship what they want I don’t care, but this is the ship everyone was acting like it was In the Stars from the very beginning? i realize I’m probably kicking a hornet’s nest with this, but yeesh, i’d ship sheith romantically before i’d ever ship this), and I hate how they seem to think they were entitled to an endgame and a romance that was never so much as hinted at in the show itself.

random headcanon: Mmmm I haven’t spent enough time thinking abt him to really develop one. I will say that he strikes me as someone who says he loves spicy food, but actually can’t handle spice for shit, so he’ll sit there shoveling jalapenos in his mouth while crying and adamantly pretending he’s Fine.

unpopular opinion: I don’t remember enough about the vld fandom to know what exactly constitutes unpopular, but I thought since I heard about it (and now, having seen it in s3/4, i stand by this opinion), Keith should not have been the Black Paladin. It should’ve been Allura. And I think it was monumentally stupid of the Black Lion to ‘choose’ someone who had all the leadership skills of a drunk pomeranian (I say with love), who then proceeds to nearly get the entire team killed because he’s Not A Leader and trying to force him to be one did more harm than good, especially early on. (and Black Paladin Allura is the hill I will pitch my tent and die upon, thank you and good night)
