question: what is gameplay in outer wilds like? i know absolutely nothing about this game - not even the vibes or gameplay
outer wilds is a puzzle platformer with an emphasis on the puzzles over the platforming i would say!! main gameplay involves 1. controlling your ship (controls can be finicky and strange but autopilot helps) and 2. controlling your character as you navigate different planets in the solar system you are exploring, each of which functions on slightly different mechanical rules and therefore requires slightly different maneuvering skills. in general, if you are unsuccessful at platforming, it’s because you haven’t found where the game tells you the ‘trick’ of that planet rather than just because the platforming is itself difficult. it is occasionally tense (especially the dlc, echoes of the eye, which is more horror themed), and often requires efficiency, accurate timing, and knowing where you’re going, but doesn’t often require quick reaction times or specific movement techniques or things like that!! because of the way the game functions, you never lose more progress than you can get back in like, 10-15 minutes, so the repetitive aspects didn’t bug me too much for that reason.
as for vibes and story, you play as a young astronaut leaving their home planet to explore their solar system for the first time!!! they (and by extension you) do not have a specific goal, so it’s about exploring what you find interesting and learning about it. the solar system works on toy box-esque rules - planets are small, easily navigable, and slightly cartoony, more super mario galaxy or little prince than no man’s sky. the type of game where yes, you need a space suit to not die in space, but your space suit does feature normal hiking boots. you know. it’s fun!!! it’s a fun game!!!
