You like Dungeon Meshi because of the autistic representation (Touden siblings), I like Dungeon Meshi because of the autistic representation (Toshiro, Izutsumi, Kabru, Touden siblings). We are not the same
#i put them last because i really do not give a fuck about laios#not as in i don't care about how good of rep he is it just never resonated with me so i dont have that connection that i do w the others#also he's constantly microagressioning toshiro. and he wants to eat demi-humans.#watching this with my mother and i just kept pointing at toshiro izutsumi and kabru and saying ''thats me'' about everything irt autism#love them they are so dear to meeee#bi rambles

The whole time this fight was happening, I was alternating between, “f*ck him up, Laios!” And “he’s autistic, you ass!”
Interrupting Falin talk to bring you the scene that shows why Laios really great autistic representation and why Shuro is the worst. he's a well written character but I hate him

absolutely feral at how dunmeshi depicts 'people skills'. like we repeatedly see chilchuck being pretty effective at analyzing people and grasping underlying tensions/motives/ect . it would make him a really good party leader which is really driven home by his union rep thing. chilchuck understands how people work. AND YET he's so unaware of himself beyond trying to be abrasive and protect his autonomy, often through that same harshness. and then seeing his moments of honesty very very incrementally go from being means to an end to still needing a good reason to talk about himself but being more specific or genuine about what he's sharing (getting laios to turn back vs. learning more about senshi).
and then marcille is just OPEN regardless of intent, she misses falin so much and complains and expresses all her emotions in a way that the rest of the gang doesn't necessarily do and in turn she's so much more emotionally intelligent to the point that she can pretty accurately understand chilchuck's wife from a brief summary of events and knowing chilchuck as well as she does.
just. really shows how nuanced social stuff is and how many ways there are to be 'good with people'. dunmeshi my heart's beloved.
#might add thoughts on laios n senshi later but.#waugh media when it's so well done#dungeon meshi#chilchuck tims#marcille donato#dungeon meshi spoilers

Dungeon Meshi Quick Reacts
CH. 33 Sea Serpent (Part II)
Ah, so we're taking a little intermission break from the main team I see. That's just gonna keep being a thing. Alright... keep your secrets...
This is so...normal. I'm not used to it at all.
Feeling a bit of pride for our girl Marcille rn
.....now that I know he's a little bit fucked up, that reaction does not inspire good feelings.
Last name drop?????
They're gay, K.... K..... Kaios?
I've forgotten his name.
Alright, Sherlock, we get it. Cellphone chargers, etc, etc.
Dwarf stinky.
But let's be real, Senshi probably smells like cooking oil.
is..... is the Japanese guy not human by virtue of being 'eastern'? What?????? 😂 I hope it's just this translation....
Hmmm.. so Namari's family got a bad rep, and Laios and Falin took her in, but that means that no one would be willing to take her place? I mean, it's not as if they NEED a dwarf.... it's not as in the dwarf would know anything about previous dynamics... especially if he had been living off of dungeon monsters.........
Senshi is only dangerous to food, chill out bud.
The dynamic here is..... sure something.
The fact that they're fully mispronouncing his name makes so much more sense now.
this boy straight up isekai'd himself to what. have his little DBZ plotline? Is that it?
ah yes. the other type of Guy.
...y.....ya good?
So Laios and Falin got swindled. You're saying they got swindled out of their money because they were trying to be kind. That's what you're saying? Just so that we're all on the same page.
Guy Who Has HyperFixated on Reading People's Intentions Takes the Biggest L.
I mean, to be fair, I don't think Laios cares about people as much as he cares about Falin. But FALIN. come ON. FALIN!
Actually no, Laios agreed to return to the surface for his team instead of following Falin. He's a good egg. SLANDER!! THIS IS SLANDER!!!!!
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyikes on spikes.
"This whole dungeon system is fucked up, am I right? Anyway. I'm going to buy Twitter take over, that will definitely fix things."
GASP!! A BABY!!!
Oh, the one this and the PREVIOUS chapter was named for? I'm glad it finally showed up!
I cast STRENGTH SAVE! It's TERRIBLE! 😂
👁👁
"her"....
specced poorly, my man. It's a skill issue.
who are you? I would die for you.
This is.......a lot to take in at once. But that's definitely... that's the guy whose name they kept butchering, right? Right? He looks like he partook of the sake a bit too much recently but that's him, right? Why does he have a fangroup now?
Yeah, this is what losing Falin does to people.
Although... this is also a skill issue. Marcile just used the pain to become a stronger, more fucked up version of herself. This guy needs to up his game.

I feel the need to add that, in conjunction with the topic of Laios, autism and how Lily conducts herself on the topic- Lily herself indirectly admitted to headcanoning Ashley Graves and Voltron as autistic, alongside her own planet-killing OC on the "good rep!" side of her arbitrary meter.
People who engage with Coffin, I've observed they more often than not suspect Ashley has something closer to BPD or Sociopathy (something to that effect depending on criteria used in whatever theory), Lily is the first and ONLY person I've ever seen allude to an idea of her being on the spectrum in specific.
Coinciding: during her MLP days she violently hated Twilight being seen as autistic and argued Rainbow Dash was a better fit... you know, the pony she wrote to be a predator in the Stockholm series.
Lily, is there a reason you have a habit of "coincidently" associating autism with being an active criminal danger to others...? Why is it that she wants all autistic rep to be strictly "a spectrum" between insufferable assholes all the way to actual genocidal lunatics?

2024 has been a good year for autistic rep in anime. We got Frieren (Frieren: Beyond Journey's End), Maomao (Apothecary Diaries), and Laios and Falin (Dungeon Meshi). I'm sure there have been other goodies that I haven't seen yet, but man am I pleased with these characters

Laios is unironically the best autism representation I have ever seen in a piece of media, ever. I'M autistic and I feel like he's a better rep than I AM! And he's not even REAL!!!
and i don't just mean he's the holy grail of hyperfixation/infodumping autism rep (which he is, obviously), and i do NOT even mean the holy grail of monsterfucking representation (WHICH HE IS, obviously), i mean the OTHER side of autism. the "just being fucking weird" autism. the "what is wrong with you?" autism. as someone who doesn't really infodump much i have NEVER felt so seen before. Laios BARKS. Laios ran on all fours up the stairs as a kid. He still does. Laios leans in when he's standing behind someone to smell them when they aren't looking. Laios sucks on his fingers as an adult. Laios likes to bite people and nibble on them. Laios's stims aren't depicted in the show not because he doesn't have any, but because they're horrifying to watch. Laios asks "can I touch your hair?" constantly. Laios is, almost disturbingly, one single blow to the head away from being an actual cannibal, in a very real way that sort of makes you uneasy, uneasy in the same way that watching real footage of the Vietnam War makes you uneasy. I'm honestly stunned that there even IS autism rep THIS good that isn't relegated to zoomer calarts final projects. This is a mainstream show and people love him. Laios is WAY beyond the level of autism that most normal people can tolerate or understand, and i think that's beautiful

Autie rep poll #8 Laios Touden.
Info below the cut
He has a very calm and gentle disposition, yet becomes passionate about monsters and their biological and mythological factors. Knowing more than the rest of his party, of which he is the leader. This irritates them when he starts to describe it in detail. His speciality is cooking and eating monsters, and he uses this to figure out ways to defeat them in combat.

I have not seen Dungeon Demenshi nor have I seen Lily's video about it. However, as an autistic person, shouldn't an autistic character displaying autistic traits be GOOD autistic rep...? Idk what Lily's smoking with her god awful takes of her apperently thinking that Laios is "too autistic".
it's the ableism. even neurodivergent people can be self hating in ways that neurotypical people aren't. "i might be autistic but at least i'm not like those weirdos!" i'm sure is a common thought that LO indulges in. i mean, it's no coincidence at all that she puts that character as "bad representation", but puts her own OC through which LO project herself into as the better alternative. you can't get more "i have the right kind of autism" than that unless you explicitely just say it, and LO doesn't have courage for that.

So I watched episode 1 of Delicious in Dungeon and I have a couple takeaways:
Laios is the best autistic rep I've ever seen.
I am literally him. He is literally me.
Damn this show's Hornier than I expected. I assume Marcille will be menaced every episode. Good for her.
Marcille's english voice actor is great and she's really endearing.
Chilchuck being small and in the corner of the frame or barely speaking cos that's how hobbit be sneaky thief.
Senshi and Laios instant friends for life.
This is literally TTRPGs. This is literally an OSR megadungeon.

....God, now my brain is trying to spit out a DunMeshi Hollywood AU...
Laios is a former child actor whose career trajectory most closely resembles that of Macaulay Caulkin. His dad was his manager, and this went about as well as you'd expect. Laios dropped out of public life for a long, long time in his late teens- people say he was in rehab, though whether that's true is best left as an exercise for the reader- and, as an adult, his acting credits mostly consist of cameos as "Serial Killer" or "Drug Dealer 3" on crime shows. He's trying to become a director and keeps working on incredibly offputting Z-grade horror flicks that can't get seed money. on account of. well. laios. His friends are always welcome to take a role- as cast or crew- if they need something between gigs.
Falin is also a former child actor. Unlike Laios, she managed to get out of the biz with her sanity intact- she got accepted to a very prestigious STEM magnet high school, which is where she met Marcille, and went to med school after. She's wound up working as the set doctor for a couple movies you've heard of and a lot of movies you haven't; she's also been "the Chimera", a monster in several of Laios' horror flicks.
Marcille is in pyrotechnics. She seems mild mannered at first, but then you catch her on set up to her elbows in gasoline... well. She spends more time in the medical tent than anyone would like, especially Falin. She's got a YouTube channel as a side hustle where she blows things up in parking lots and freaks out at bad Italian cooking.
Speaking of, Marcille went to high school with Falin and fell for her pretty much instantly. They recently moved in together and are trying to navigate living together for the first time. It's not going as well as either of them would like, but they're getting there.
Senshi works catering. Was there ***any*** doubt about that? Everyone's excited to work on the same set as Senshi, because the food is actually good, regardless of whether you're filming in Monterrey, Marrakesh, or Mentor, Ohio. Senshi's pretty quiet about his personal life, but he'll occasionally whip out his phone and show off pictures of his stunning, xeriscaped garden. He loves working with Laios, even though the pay isn't great, because Laios WILL let him put squid and dragonfruit on the menu.
Chilchuck is a stuntman, and the de facto union rep on most sets. He can tell you, to the second, when the next mandated break is, when the kid on set needs to be done for the day, and when it's time to go home. I headcanon human!AU Chilchuck is a little person, so his proudest career accomplishment to date is probably standing in for Peter Dinklage in a film where he got to be the leading man; he's real fucking sick of being a bootleg hobbit. Somehow, he manages to spend LESS time in the medical tent than Marcille.
Itsuzumi ... God. Her background is so specific and doesn't translate well. My gut instinct is that she's a cat-themed idol who came to the US to be ~☆ a movie star ☆~ and got stuck in a shitty, exploitative contract. I'd love it if someone who knows the character better could give suggestions, though!

What I know about Dungeon Meshi characters as someone who has only seen it on my dash:
Senshi: Dwarf man. Everyone wants to fuck him. Cooks good. Kind. Tumblr's Ideal Husband. I cannot stress enough how much people want to do insane things to this man's cervix. Gets all the standard anime fanservice which I am 100% okay with
Chilchuck: Dead inside. Supports unions. Canonically fucks. Cusses people out. A retail worker's fantasy. I don't know how he ended up with these people and I don't think he knows either but now he's attached so.
Marcille: Standard Anime Elf Girl except Not. Covered in blood. Italian. Doomed yuri. Casually spites god. So fucking tired of eating random shit Laios grabbed off the floor.
Laios: Autistic rep of the year. Somehow the least normal person here unrelated to that. Type of individual to lick uranium out of curiosity of how it tastes. Feel like they have to have the "what's in your mouth" *chews faster* conversation with him a lot
Falin: Laios's sister, eaten by dragon. Revived via power of lesbianism. Didn't come back wrong but what is now wrong was unrelated.
Izutsumi: catgirl. legitimately just a cat in the shape of a girl, and we love her for that. Adopted by Senshi? Maybe? Look all you need to know is This Is A Cat
theres some other guys but these are the ones I know

Btw, I know people generally hold Chilchuck up as the perfect union man because of what he won't do - as in, "Pay me up front, that's not in my job description, etc.," but I think he's good union rep also because of what he does do. The usual real-life argument I see against unions is that they are corrupt and that they force businesses to keep on lazy or incompetent workers because it is more difficult to fire people (not saying that I agree with these arguments). Chilchuck is in no way lazy or incompetent, he cares deeply about doing his job properly to the point of anxiety because fucking up will potentially get himself or others killed. He is a professional who does his job well, he just won't let himself (or others) be exploited. He's the guy who will give a great job performance on the clock, but you'd better not ask for anything after he's clocked out. Which is entirely fair.
(Arguably he goes above and beyond for Laios's group, but that group definitely goes from "coworkers" to "friends" over the course of the series.)
#he does charge a fee for contract negotiations through the guild#but also he founded the damn guild and is providing a service#of both finding people work and making sure that the contract is fair#chilchuck tims
