New friends I can run with. Maybe have a little fun with. And I don't even care what we do. Just don't tell 'em all I'd trade 'em all for you. I might sound crazy, but you know I've always been. And at least I ain't lonely, except every now and then. Ain't nothing here can hold me, like only you can. If you ain't coming back, baby, I'm thinking maybe I could use some new friends. New friends.

Out of Oklahoma | Hangman A.P.

Happy Dynamite Wednesday, babes. ❤️

"Mom," Y/N sighed over the phone. She pinched the top of her nose in frustration. In her other hand, she gripped her phone tightly and shook it. After her mini fit, the phone was placed back to her ear.
Her mom wouldn't drop that she shouldn't have left Adam. Thanksgiving was quickly approaching, and she was laying it on thick. A sudden realization struck. "Wait, I thought you told me he stopped asking about me?"
There was a pause on the phone. Despite her mother's betrayal, Y/N swore she felt her heart skip a beat. He still asked about her. Even after all these months. Her Adam.
"I didn't think you would care if he did," she admitted truthfully.
An ache gripped Y/N's heart. She would always care about him. The man was her first kiss, her first love, her first, well, everything. Even now, she still misses the way he would pull her close to his body after a long day of working on the farm.
"Of course I care, mom. He's my husband,"
"At least come home to see me. It's going to be Thanksgiving. I miss you. You are my one and only, my baby," her mother practically begged. Y/N could hear her mother's voice cracking. Tears started to form in her eyes.
Guilt washed over her. It had been months since she saw her mother. As an only child, they needed each other. The school bell rang through the halls.
"My students will be coming in soon, mom. I'll think about it,"
"Please make the right choice, Y/N. I love you,"
"I love you too. Goodbye,"
The women hung up. Y/N placed her forehead against the window in her classroom. The fields filled with farm animals were now replaced with high rises. The traffic was worse. Daily occurrences of people screaming at each other and blowing their horn. Maybe her mother was right. Maybe it was time to go back to Oklahoma.
It was the last day of school before Thanksgiving break, and all she could think about was her mother and Adam. The two people she left behind when things started to get rough. As the day wore on, her longing to go back to Oklahoma grew.
By the end of the day, she knew she was going to visit them.
The next morning, she started the journey home. Her mood changed the moment she drove away from the downtown area.
Long gone were the high rises and busy downtown traffic. The longest structure now belonged to water towards. Riddled with colorful paint from graffiti, they held the name of the towns she traveled through.
The traffic was nonexistent. The last vehicle she passed was a tractor going from one farm to another. Oklahoma was so peaceful and beautiful. She started to question herself for ever leaving.
Never wanting to stop to pay for the cheap road side motels, Y/N drove through the night. She stopped at every gas station to wake herself up with some coffee and a brief stretch. By the next morning, she was at her mother's house. It was Thanksgiving Day.
She used a key under a plant pot to open the door. Y/N grabbed a glass and poured water in it. Footsteps descended down the wooden stairs. Her mother walked into the kitchen and gasped.
"Sweetheart? Is that really you?" She asked.
"Happy Thanksgiving, mom," Y/N answered.
Tears filled her mother's eyes. She wrapped her daughter in a warm hug. The two women clung to each other as if this was the last time they would see each other again. When they parted, her mother cupped her cheeks.
"You look like you drove all night. Let me take you to your old room for some rest,"
When she walked into her old bedroom, all the memories came flooding in. She swore she saw the ghost of her former self with Adam. The two of them cuddled up on her bed.
Pictures of her and Adam taped all over her walls. All the big events they did together and even the little ones. Y/N grabbed a particular picture. She was so much younger in this one. As was Adam. They were on a boat in a river to go fishing that day. It was the day he first told her he loved her.
"He, um, he invited me to Thanksgiving with his family since we didn't think you would come home," her mother started.
Y/N placed the picture down on her desk. She knew where she was going with this. "Oh?"
"I know he would love to see you. Why don't you come tonight?"
"I'm really tired. Can I get back to you after I sleep?"
Her mother sighed. Not the answer she was hoping to hear, but at least it wasn't a no. She simply nodded and left her alone to her thoughts.
Y/N felt like she slept peacefully in her bed. It was the first time in such a long time. She was already up by the time her mom came in to check on her.
"I was just letting you know that I'm going over to Adam's mom's house. If you need anything just-"
Her mother stopped the moment Y/N stood out of bed. Adorned in a white long sleeve shirt, blue jeans, and black boots, she appeared like she was going somewhere.
"Do you think they would mind if I come?"
"I am sure there is always room for one more especially for you,"
The quick road trip to Adam's family home was a quiet one. Y/N didn't know how everyone would react to seeing her. She would be considered a liar if she said she wasn't nervous.
"You go ahead," she told her mom. Her hands gripped the steering wheel. "I just need a minute,"
Her mother nodded in understanding and patted her hand gently. She left her daughter to her thoughts in the car.
More memories flooded Y/N's mind. The good and the bad. Tears fell down her cheeks as she pressed her forehead to the steering wheel. After a minute or two, she regained her composure and followed her waiting mother.
"Oh my!" Adam's mother called out when she saw her. The older woman gave her a big hug. "Look at you! My goodness, it's like seeing a dang ghost,"
"Is Adam home?" Y/N asked.
Adam's mother pulled away. She smiled at the familiarity of that question. All the times she had heard it before. "He's just been mopin' around them horses in the back. He misses you something fierce, darling. Go talk to my boy,"
Y/N walked towards the backyard. Adam had his arms rested on the white picket fence. He wore a similar outfit to hers, but his shirt was black. The horses walked in front of him. Y/N walked next to him. She was met with his light eyes.
"Y/N," he breathed. For the third time that day, she was pulled in for a hug. His familiar scent caused her to relax. Adam gripped her tightly as if she would run if given the option. He planted kisses on the top of her head.
She knew she was back at her true home.
