Journal Entry 7th Sept 22- Makoko, "The Venice of Lagos" spent the some good people who took me around in a Canoe introducing me to people who were happy to tell their story. Makoko is a community who's home are built on the Lagoon. Historically it was built in the 18th century as a fishing settlement. The people are proud self reliant and despite the many problems they face continue to be hopeful that things will change. However, there is a bigger problem... Developers! They plan to sandfill the entire place to make way for... you guessed it... Luxury hotels,apartments... Obviously the current occupants won't be able to afford to live there so they will be relocated? Sounds like UNESCO might want to have a look at this one... This guy goods was collected by a governmental body called Taskforce in Lagos because he was selling on the road and I was just walking by and I saw how he was being treated, what he did wasn't wrong because he didn't sell on the road, he was just riding his wheelbarrow and they took his goods, he was crying so I had to beg those people but they refused to give him back his goods and went away with it, I had to go around looking for them, it took me over three hours to eventually get to them and we were told to pay money and the guy said he hadn't sold anything, so I had to use my money for him and they said it wasn't enough, I had to beg and one of them asked me if I knew the guy, I said No but I decided to help. they become surprised and they decided to collect the money I had with me. I sat down at the express road for over two hours waiting for them. I'm posting this is because, sometimes we may not have all the money in the world but when we find an opportunity to help, let help. Sometimes to create a system, it would take making sacrifices and being selfless. I didn't just want to help the guy, I also wanted to let the people know that we should sometimes show mercy, we are all experiencing the same challenge facing us as a continent but we have to learn to be human. Official Launch of Creative Lagos The Del-York Creative Academy, in partnership with the Lagos State Government formally launched, Creative Lagos, a special creative industry capacity building program sponsored by the Lagos State Government to train 1,000 talented young people in the Creative Industry that had come through a painstaking selection process from across the 20 local government areas and 57 LCDAs of the state. The hybrid event launch was held at the Victoria Island offices of Del York International and virtually via online platforms zoom and YouTube. Mr Sanwo-Olu in his special remarks to the gathering charged the participants to take cognizance of their role and importance in the evolving Lagos story and pledged his government’s continued support for the continuity of the programme. In her remarks, the Honorable Commissioner for Tourism & Culture, Mrs Uzamat Akinbile Yussuf, thanked the Governor for the overwhelming support he had shown the LACI initiative, the Creative Lagos capacity building project and indeed, her ministry as a whole. The President of the Del-York Creative Academy, Mr Linus Idahosa, spoke effusively about the importance of the collaboration and how the Governor’s vision to develop young people through the creative industry would reap bountifully in the not-too-distant future. He also thanked the Lagos State Government for their commitment to training even more creatives in successive programs especially those who couldn’t secure admission into the first cohort of Creative Lagos. It is pertinent to note that all allegations are being investigated by the relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies, including Ministry of Education, Office of Education Quality Assurance, Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Ministry of Justice and the Lagos State Domestic & Sexual Violence Agency, whilst the criminal allegations have been escalated to the Commissioner of Police.
