Race of many colors
Now that the governorship election is over, I pray Governor Sanwoolu is reelected so that people like us with half Ibo half Yoruba genetic mix can have our peace. My WhatsApp private chat was inundated with hateful, derogatory posts about Ibos that i was bombarded with because of my Ibo ancestry. An ignominy, they deemed, i guess, I should not have been associated with. Absit! (God forbid). Some even insinuated that loyalty should be shown to only one side of the divide, tribally. We seem to be loosing our humanity when we deliberately allow ourselves to be divided to be conquered by tribal sentiments. We have no respect for the image and superscription He made us in. God made us primarily to fulfill divine personal purpose, with or without tribal drives. We are not all the same though we may be of the same tribes. We ain't tribal clones! Some of us have variegated cultural affiliations and we love it so. I'm British Nigerian, with Yoruba and Ibo flavours. I have multiple names from both sides given by grandparents and parents which I love. Yet this divinely arranged cultural mix has earned me bias, unjust accusations, name calling, prejudice, victimization and rejection from people who feel that because they dislike a certain tribe, they have a right to project that hate onto anyone of that tribe. We have bound ourselves with tribal chains that cuts deep into us, amputating vital organs for mobility and development. Tribal connections are healthy when we realize that in spite of tribal links, we are unique in our own ways. I'm happy somehow that the Lagos/Igbo people saga and the ensuing hullabaloo happened. It made me understand that no matter what, tribalism will not allow people like us to flourish in this kind of society. With all things being unequal, 'half castes' like us will be treated like substandard goods by many people. Your rights stripped from you by opposing tribes. Osanobua is our sustenance.
I am linked with professional colleagues of Hausa/Fulani lineages and culture. Great people who have shown me utmost respect and appreciation for my professional skills. I should be recommended for psychiatric evaluation when I begin to equate my respectful Northern professional colleagues with the Fulani herdsmen we are told kidnap and kill people. I should be given room and parlor in a mental institution when I send posts of Fulani herdsmen killing people to them. Why on earth would anyone do that to another person? Not only is it a lack of emotional and social intelligence, it is traumatizing. That's what we do when we are blinded by tribalism and generalization, refusing to accord basic respect to all humans as they are.
For those who hold on tenaciously to tribal bias and prejudices, accept my deepest sympathy.
