Here’s the thing about Sev though: he puts it on. He knows he does.

Every time he shoots a Geonosian ravager point-blank, spraying himself and his brothers in foul yellow viscera, he knows his options are limited. He could feign bravado like Boss, embodying that eldest-brother pride and sense of duty that’s recently started to feel just a little brittle around the edges. He could just shut down, turn droid-cold, like Fixer. Poor guy’s been getting back from missions to sit wordless and stiff in his rack, bucket still on. He’s begun to worry about him.

But his biggest cause for concern is his youngest brother. He’s seen the nervous, mindless babbling that Scorch relies on to get through the more gruesome campaigns. Scorch’s jokes had begun to sound close to manic. Nobody else seemed concerned — or, at least, as though they had room to act on those concerns. Sev’s never been the best with words. He gets it out in training, or on missions. It’s easier to find clarity in brutality. But his when his first dark, shaky efforts at levity seemed to shock Scorch into movement, he felt like it might be worth it.

And ever since then, he’s taken it upon himself to carry that edge of fucked-up-ness for all of their sakes. He doesn’t mind being psycho, unrockable Sev as long as it makes them feel better about their own conflicted feelings in the heat of a fight. He doesn’t mind the ribbing from Scorch when he seems to enjoy a kill just that little bit too much. It’s better than seeing his little brother’s hands shaking too hard to reload his anti-armours. In his own way, it’s as much an outlet for that terror for him as it is for the rest of the squad.

All of this takes its toll though. When he’s finally sitting alone with you in the quiet, he lets it all slip away. It’s hard to be hard. He sometimes doesn’t know if he’s still pretending. Maybe he isn’t a good man anymore, if he ever really was one. This is why it means so much when you remind him. Because surely only a good man would get to feel your fingertips on his jaw, softly feeling the tension ease as you kiss him, light and delicate. Only a good man would get to hear you whispering to him in the dim, telling him how gentle his hands feel on your body, how careful he always is with you, how safe he makes you feel… promising him that he's safe, when he’s with you.

When you wrap your arms around him and hold his head close in the space between your breasts, it’s one of the only times he lets himself become truly soft. Your fingers in his hair, your lips against his forehead, he can simply allow himself to be loved. When he finally feels the heat of your body sinking down around him, he doesn’t even try to hold back his whimper. He needs you to tell him how good he makes you feel, because there isn't enough goodness in his life.

It's why he takes such a long time with you; so slow as he works you higher, kissing lazily at the place inside your knee even as he curls his fingers inside you. He wants to be soaked in you, until you're gasping his name — his name — creating something between the two of you that feels so good and right and safe.

In these moments, his hands are washed clean of all the blood he’s ever spilled.

"Obviously," Fox mutters, lifting his helmet to pinch the bridge of his nose. He's clearly annoyed at the situation, not Thorn-as-Stone, so Thorn takes it in stride, making a sympathetic humming noise. Fox sighs, long and frustrated.

"Of course, were General Fisto available..." Fox shakes his head, refusing to finish the thought. Monnk and his battalion always speak highly of their Jetti. It's hardly General Fisto's fault the Guard hasn't had much positive experience with the order. "Like I said, it's sensitive. Grenade can spare a medic or two."

"I'll have a chat with him," Stone says behind Thorn's helmet, and Thorn's eyes roll back in his head at the deeper, rougher affect Stone puts on. Thorn doesn't sound like that. "Might have to crack a few skulls to get the personnel, but that's nothing new."

"Give me a fucking break," Thire mutters. He'd noticed the moment Stone and Thorn walked in together, the change in their gait and the way Stone kept fiddling with Thorn's too-worn gloves. And Fox might have done the same, if he hadn't avoided sleeping all week and can barely keep his eyes open let alone notice the swap. But Thire can bitch as much as he wants - this is the most fun Thorn's had in months.

"What the fuck are you on about?" Fox asks tiredly. "'Crack a few skulls' - I swear, Thorn, if you so much as joke about hurting Grenade's boys he'll throw you off the prison roof. Just tell him we need the manpower, alright?" Stone mock-salutes.

"Yes, sir!" Stone shouts, and the snort Thorn lets out is utterly undignified, but not nearly as loud as the obnoxious sound Thire makes.

"Something to say, Thire?" Fox asks, and Thire splutters.

"Vod, they're fucking with you-"

"What else is new? Thorn hasn't been serious a day in his life. Now, Stone," Fox continues, staring right at Thorn, who at this point has to bite his tongue to keep from bursting into what he suspects would be very girlish giggles, "do you need to brush up on your Nautila?"

"Not at all," Thorn says confidently.

"Oh yeah?" asks Thire, the smug grin on his face so intense it comes clear through his voice. "Why not give us a sample?"

"Hey, hey," Stone says, his voice just on the precipice of anxious, "this isn't a history class-"

"Pill-och boor, p'loch baan, veniiv veneev," Thorn says perfectly clearly - and utterly gibberish. "That roughly translates to; We are love, we are light, we are bodiless souls."

For one tense moment, Thorn almost believes the jig is up as Fox watches him in utter silence. Then-

"No wonder Monnk's such a fucking hippie anymore," Fox mutters, rubbing his face again. "I'm sure the Nautolans will be...charmed."

"Oh my fucking god," Thire groans as Stone bends over, hands on his knees, laughing his ass off. And yeah, Fox chases them around with an electric riot baton for the better part of an hour after that, but it's definitely worth it.

Sksjdh just kidding. Yeah, there's definitely a few nat-born officers and others who have crushes on him, I mean, have you SEEN him? 😏 It's not that he's unaware that people find him attractive -he never has trouble finding someone to spend the night with if he wants to. Its just that relationships aren't really his priority right now, so he's not paying attention to that. Now, if someone did manage catch his eye he wouldn't say no to being with them, he just isn't actively seeking someone out. That's for after the war when he can properly enjoy a relationship without worrying about their lives and the lives of his friends and brothers.
