I'm currently designing the dress for a magical boy story, and it's dawned on me that the majority of magical girl outfits seem to have the same silhouette: a fitted bodice, puff sleeves at the shoulders, and a flared or full skirt that never comes lower than the knee.

What do you think makes this style so prevalent?

This is an excellent question! In fact, my OC Erina literally ticks all those boxes (I did intentionally picture her as a "stereotypical, ideal" magical girl though)

As for how it came about.... the silhouette is very feminine but also specifically girly, giving off an air of youth and innocence. It's actually a perfect shorthand for telling the audience that these are teenage girls who fight with the power of love and hope.

Prince Rian smiled faintly and inclined his head. “Your Grace, what can I do for you today? Please speak plainly.”

Duke Blewitt snorted. “Then you know that your actions have caused a major backlash and fractured the people’s support for you.”

“I believe that the benefits outweigh the losses,” Prince Rian said. “If certain people no longer want to work with either myself or Marquis Rosewood, then we’ll make a lot of money with others instead.”

Duke Blewitt: “…”

“Or, are you jealous that I like Ayden and that Ayden likes me?”

Duke Blewitt spluttered. “I’m older than your father!”

“Oh, you’re frustrated that you didn’t think of becoming the consort of my Imperial father or my late Imperial grandfather?” Prince Rian said ‘innocently’.

Duke Blewitt felt dizzy with anger. “Impudent!” He couldn’t stand Prince Rian any longer.

I actually do have transformation music picked out for each of them!

I've been too busy to write this week 😥 but I'll share a snippet from The Snow Lord, a short story I wrote for the BL Palace Winter Anthology, which I'm organizing for expansion into... probably a novella? We'll see. If you'd like to read the short form you can find it here in the Anthology!

“Gweion, don’t leave yourself open!” the red-haired boy called. He stepped back, lowering his sword with a sigh.

“Sorry, Andonel.” Gweion gasped for breath, wiping his sweating brow on his tunic sleeve.

Andonel knew how the day’s heat added to Gweion’s struggle. He suggested a break.

Gweion groaned in agreement, then made for the shade of a nearby tree, flopping gracelessly onto the soft ground.

As Andonel walked over, a sudden breeze gusted across the stream, unusually cool for the height of summer, and sparse droplets of rain pattered down. Andonel blinked up at the cloudless sky.

Dropping his gaze, he was instantly transfixed at the sight of Gweion’s face surrounded by purple and yellow flowers – so gentle and handsome, but fraught with worry.

Andonel’s heart stirred with a bittersweet ache that he couldn’t quite put a name to. He sank to his knees, plucked a yellow buttercup, and flicked it over Gweion’s nose.

“Hey!” Gweion’s eyes flew open, then crinkled as he rubbed away the pollen.

“What’s wrong?”

Gweion looked away, frowning. “They won’t take me.”

“The Knights? You don’t have to be Knight, Gweion.”

“But they’ll take you,” Gweion said in a strained voice, a hand covering his face. “They’ll take you…”

Andonel’s heart squeezed in his chest, then began to thump madly.

Alone in my lab, tinkering with the machines.

Having to attend court meetings now that I live in the castle. Also arrogant know-it-alls with their stupid handsome faces getting their tragic backstory auras in range of my empathic sense and making me... what was I saying? Oh, no, just the meeting thing.

I would give my life to save the innocent common people. My life is no more valuable than theirs.

My questions from ladymoonpearl:

If you knew you were going to lose your sight and hearing tomorrow, forever, what would you do today?

Is there anyone you would fall from Heaven for, if God wouldn’t let them in?

Do you believe that true justice exists?

I'll answer these for Kazia's brother, Abrizhen:

Stare at Tamyn's face. And maybe his art, but mostly his face. I know he'll tell me that he loves me and will take care of me, and that would be a nice last thing to hear.

Well, Tamyn is the one going to Heaven, and I probably am not, but I would give up absolutely anything for him.

I don't think there is. I think we are all muddled balls of good and evil and you'd have to untangle that to figure out what justice even is. There's not one of us with clean hands or clean hearts, undeserving of some comeuppance. Except Tamyn, he's perfect and has never done anything wrong in his entire life.

Here's a small bit of the chapter of Salvage I'm currently working on:

Kazia slowly opened her unwilling eyes in the dim light within her drawn bed curtains, squinting at a hazy beam of sunlight peeking through a crack in the drapery. Turning onto her side, her legs tangled in the disorderly bedclothes, and she smiled lazily at a few memories as her sore muscles protested the movement. There had been quite a bit of activity in these rumpled sheets last night, but now her outstretched arm found the other side of the bed cold and empty.
