I make a lot of vintage styled looks/concepts, I have a soft spot for the retro aesthetic, but this idea was prompted by a friend! I did a question post in my instagram stories for concepts that I could bring to ECCC and my friend Kirstie (@deathbright) suggested Vintage Ursula. The vision that popped into my head was the Marilyn Monroe “diamonds are a girls best friend” hot pink dress dripping in diamonds and I went with it. So, I guess "souls are a girls best friend"! I've always loved Ursula as a villain and I think this is a look she would totally dig.

This costume came together QUICK! It took about a week of work alongside my day job and finishing another cosplay (eek!). I used a dress pattern that I altered, which sped up the process. This is a fully lined cotton velvet gown with a boned bodice, the train attaches to the belt. I styled the white lace front wig (which I luckily already had) with the classic big bang/wave to get that Marilyn vintage glam vibe. Hiring a body painter and a makeup artist for the day of was the best decision I've ever made. I couldn’t bring myself to do my own makeup/paint two days in a row (my other cosplay that weekend also involved paint/makeup, which I did myself). I was painted by Codie Scott (@tiny_art_face_painting) and my makeup was done by Maleah Duvessa (@ladyduvessa). I couldn’t have done it without them, their contributions were vital to the finished look. I'm so glad this concept came together on a tight timeline.

Cosplay is something fairly new to me (I've been doing it for 3 years), but I’ve been making costumes and clothing for the better part of 15 years. Cosplay has given me the outlet I needed to pursue my wild costume dreams and get to wear my own art! Being outlandish and completely creative with concepts, while using existing culture to prompt inspiration, create deadlines, and push my skills helped me rethink how to approach my design work. It breathed new life into my love for design and creation after years of being uninspired to make "normal" clothing. And I can't answer this question fully without talking about this community. It’s the best. The PNW cosplay scene is pretty badass and I get to be FRIENDS with all these incredible creators and cosplayers. It brought me so much joy right when I needed it, and I love being included in such a brilliant and supportive community. I really feel like I belong.

"Nightmare elf" --- From the start of this year @ladyduvessa came over the day after New Year's and we made art. Spooky and fantasy art, it was cold that day so we decided got this look which was the second look that we'd shoot it indoors.
