Propaganda under the cut.
Lady Eboshi:
She relentlenssy fights the wolves (including San who is wolfgender) and destroys nature, to maintain the activity of her mine. But she does not do it for greed. She does it to protect sex workers and lepers. To protect marginalized people. She may be an "antagonist" (if they were an antagonist in the movie) but she's not a bad person, just a good person that destroys nature (like so many IRL humans).
Listen. She was good to her village people, especially the women. Took care of leprosy patients when no one else would. Very empowering girlboss. I hate her very much. She wanted to destroy the mountain and the forests for resources and caused great harm to the nature spirits, animals, and animal gods that lived there. Fuck her. Morally gray but I'd fight her to the death. With regret
Princess Azula:
homegirl was only 14 and scarier than her dad but let's be fr, her mum saw her as a monster back when she was a kid bc no one taught her how to be gentle. she was ozai's golden child born and raised to be his puppet. sure she's not a good person nor did she do good things but c'mon she was never given the chance or space to be good. the amount of unexplored potential in her is astronomical. also her lines are just iconic
She tries to kill people with lightning, and is controlling/manipulative of her friends and Zuko. However, she is very cool, so I think this should be allowed.
honestly what do you even say about azula that *hasn't* been said. she's a psychologically fascinating villain, evil yet so complicated and interesting to watch, she's so intriguing and well written. her immoralness mixed with seeing her Feel made her so so interesting to watch. she's an excellent cautionary tale and just a wonderful antagonist. definitely one of the most memorable parts of the show for me
She has never ONCE genuinely apologized for anything in her entire life. Everything she did was on purpose and with the direct intention of furthering her own goals and fucking everybody else over. Firelord of my heart.

Chris Watches Princess Mononoke for the first time
* ok I know actually nothing about this one but I’ve seen like a tik tok of a scene where someone is sleeping and wakes up and says “you’re beautiful” ????
* Liking the tone right off the bat though
* Sokka vibes from this blue guy ngl
* HOLY SHIT why do these movies have such scary visuals?? Worm monster???
* P sure that deer horses name is yakult lol yummy
* Lol he doesn’t know if the monster is a god or a demon? It’s BLACK WITH RED EYES my guy
* Okay yeah Sokka is totally based off this guy
* Holy fuck that guy just got his arms chopped off in a kids movie
* “Are you selling soup or donkey piss?” maybe… not… a kids movie…
* This monk guy is cool
* Ok but who is princess Mononoke where is she
* Loving this worldbuilding
* Guns. Okay
* Oh damn okay so the guns are killing the spirits and they’re angry
* I see her! I see Princess Mononoke!
* These lil white guys are creepy af
* Okay so a lots been happening and as usual I don’t understand all of it but I can totally see how Ghibli inspired ATLA
* Anyway idk if I’m supposed to hate lady eboshi but I really can’t lol she’s a feminist icon, making a home for those sex workers and all
* Wild that this movie came out I think the same year as Pocahontas bc there are some big similarities
* Also I’m just really interested in stories about kids being raised by animals?? lol
* Also obsessed w when a character who is obviously human is all “I hate humans”
* Anyway I know I was talking about how this boy is Sokka bc he’s blue but I was very wrong and he is Obviously Zuko? Weird scar thing? Growing up a prince but being forced to leave home? Haircut?
* He even has a scar on his face now lmao
* Also love a REALISTIC recovery arc for getting shot in the chest? So many shows and movies are like “oh I’m fine now it’s been five minutes”
* OH SHIT that was San attacking the villagers when we first saw the wolves right?? Wow I’m slow but I remember being like “why is there a person on that wolf”
* So I’m starting to wonder if San is actually Princess Mononoke or not. Like who IS it I’m confused and dumb
* Okay I just googled it I get that now
* “I hate that boy” *puts on the necklace he gave her*
* Starting to Not Like Eboshi and also fuck that monk
* That forest spirit looks creepy as hell
* Oh shit oh fuck oh no he died
* Why is Princey wearing that gay ass shirt tits out it’s just sleeves. Someone’s trying to impress the princess
* I love stories where gods can be killed like it opens up so many possibilities??
* Strong themes in these films, we stan
okay yeah that was kind of cool as shit, I really enjoyed that one. I am DEF starting to see how this shit inspired avatar which I’d always heard. Good visuals here, good themes, I love history. Nice.

WOW this post was in my drafts for almost two years and I am realising I never actually finished writing it. So fuck it I guess.
Something that's always bugged me about the end of FFVII that I thought I'd share:
Tumblr media
So, during the ending, Meteor arrives and grows like energy tentacles or whatever and starts ripping up the city and burrowing into the Planet and shit. In the process, a lot of the city is completely demolished, and the Shinra logo is ripped clean off the tower:
Tumblr media
But then later when Holy shows up and the devastation continues, now on both the Planet's end and Meteor's, the tower remains standing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is hardly an oversight -- it's visibly buffeted pretty hard by everything going on, but never at any point gets knocked over. Which is a little weird, right? If they were ever going to blow up their big iconic setpiece, now would be the time. It'd be pretty convenient symbolism, too, given the environmental themes the game's had up until now. Man's hubris or whatever. It'd look really cool and this would be the ideal time to do it, but they instead went out of their way not to.
The tower, now devoid of Shinra's logo, no longer represents Shinra, and is now being used to bring up another point the game has raised at a few points up until now, most notably at Great Glacier.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The tower, built by humanity in defiance of the natural world (a force that is neither inherently good nor evil, but simply worth preserving) around it, remains unfelled by Holy and Meteor. Humanity is a part of the world as much as the rest of it, but still has chosen to set itself apart. This, too, is something not inherently good or evil, and the game argues that this too can be something worth preserving.
I'm reminded somewhat of Princess Mononoke (an EXTREMELY similar work in terms of theme and the way the story resolves incidentally go watch it it's really good Neil Gaiman did the English dub if you liked VII you'll love Princess Mononoke). The conflict is not even inherently "Humans Bad Nature Good". The natural world -- the forests, the spirits -- are all shown as beautiful and worth preserving for their own sake; but at the same time, there is a degree of brutality inherent to it as well. Nature is not always good and nurturing. In contrast, Lady Eboshi (who is vastly more benevolent than Shinra) finds herself in conflict with the forest, all too willing to rip it all down in the name of progress and the distinctly human quality of compassion. Ashitaka himself is later berated by the wolf god Moro for expressing it.
At the end, when (spoilers) Iron Town is destroyed and overtaken by greenery, the only thing that is left are the people, who must choose to live and decide what "living" even means, being inextricably intertwined with the natural world and yet inevitably in conflict with it, and who must learn to balance this conflict with the fact that all life -- be it human or otherwise -- is as precious as it is insignificant in the broad scheme of things.
It's hard not to think of the image of Midgar's ruins completely overgrown 500 years later, and Iron Town covered in plants, taking a step back and thinking about not just their lives, but about what it even means to live and be a part of the world that is as much a part of them as they are of it.

Round 4
Tumblr media
Note: This is a three-way poll to even our numbers going into the semi-finals! Only the winner will advance to the final four!
Pokémon TV Series: I want to be the very best, like no one ever was. The Pokémon TV series or Pokémon anime is the iconic all-ages animated show based on the immensely popular Pokémon trading card and video game franchise. Premiering in 1997, the series follows the irresponsibly-young adventures of a trainer named Ash Ketchum and his electrifying companion Pikachu as they travel through the many regions in the Pokémon world, capturing and training Pokémon, competing in battles, and aiming to become Pokémon Masters. Along the way, they encounter friends and rivals, foil the plans of the villainous Team Rocket, and of course document and capture lots of funny little guys (Pocket Monsters, as it were.) You gotta catch 'em all!
Princess Mononoke: Cut off a wolf’s head, and it still has the power to bite. Princess Mononoke is a critically acclaimed animated film created by renowned director Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, released in 1997. The film tells a complex environmental story, set in a fantastical ancient forest based on late Muromachi period Japan; we join a young warrior, Ashitaka, who becomes embroiled in a conflict between the inhabitants of the forest and a mining town encroaching on their land. At the heart of the story is San, a human girl raised by wolves, and Lady Eboshi, the leader of the mining community. Princess Mononoke is admired by Ghibli and non-Ghibli fans alike for its beautiful hand-drawn animation and its exploration of the themes of nature, industrialization, and the delicate balance between the consistent push of humanity and the weariness of a long-surviving environment. It was the highest-grossing film in Japan for 1997, and also held Japan's box office record for domestic films until Miyazaki’s 2001 release Spirited Away.
End of Evangelion: It all returns to nothing. So says the haunting tune 'Komm, Süsser Tod' by Arianne, which soundtracks the fate of humanity in the End of Evangelion. The film serves as an alternate ending to the original anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, which bewitched viewers with the then-unconventional match of giant mecha and existential depression all wrapped up in religious iconography. The final episodes of the anime are incredibly cerebral and proved controversial for viewers at the time, which led to director Hideaki Anno further expressing himself in the 1997 film... which took the heady themes and conflicting stylistic choices of the show and put them in a high-octane blender, along with a tall glass of Human Tang. At its core, End of Evangelion asks if individualism is the one great folly of humanity and the source of our suffering, or if it is the very point of it; it shows the loss of barriers between people and subsequent extinction of loneliness as a sort of cosmic horror. Looking back at the scenes, imagery, and music most associated with the anime and its continued influence, much of the franchise's legacy stems from the End of Evangelion.

‘do you want to be a god?’ (for Eboshi! from an old ask meme I found on your blog dfkgvkhf)
miscellaneous (i think?) / @ojoumushi
" be a god? " there's a certain level of surprise in her voice, like she hadn't considered the possibility for herself. eboshi appears to think on it, tipping the teapot into one cup, then another, setting the latter in front of her guest with delicate fingers. she hums, then returns to her seat, tossing the idea around in her mind. " i hope that's not an offer, my dear. you may not like my answer. " noncommittal, as always, but the truth is that she's not sure what she would say. being a god may mean being an all powerful, undying creature to most, especially weak fools, but eboshi knows better than that. anyone can die. anyone can be fooled, or injured, or fall in love. and the higher you are, the longer you have to fall. true, it may make it easier to get what you want when you have the powers of divinity on your side, but you can do just as much with less. you just need to be a little crafty, is all. she knows that, too. too well.
regarding her guest with a tight, pleasant smile, eboshi lifts her cup to her lips, careful not to smudge her lipstick against it. " and what about you? would you really want to become a god, or do you simply crave the ability to change the course of your destiny? you don't need divine intervention to do that. true, women have a more difficult time than most when they try, but it is possible. with a little luck and hard work, that is. but i don't need to tell you that, do i? "
