laxia was once again scolding you, just like she did so often. only that this time she was convinced you had taken a piece of that cake she had baked yesterday. 

"i didn't do anything! maybe you just don't wanna admit that you ate it yourself last night!"

you softly huffed back at your girlfriend, not taking her accusations too seriously. 

"excuse me!? i'd never do such a thing–!!"

"oh really? what about that one time you–"

laxia blushed and interrupted you before you could finish your sentence. 

"that was one time! stop bringing that up, you…"

your little argument was suddenly interrupted by a familiar laughter and as you two turned your heads, you found adol and dogi watching the two of you. 

"you're not even married and yet you two already argue like an old married couple…"

dogi chuckled and shook his head amused. 

"what ? we are not–"

the two of you both started at the same time, only to grow quiet once you realized you were so in synch that you were about to say the same thing. 

"ha, told you! like an old married couple~"

Today I somehow find out that there’s an entire NOVEL ( not a manga and DEFINITELY not a light novel) for the video game Lacrimosa of Dana without hearing about it first?? It’s by Anna Kashina and I so happen to come across it at the library?? Never expected that at ALL.

I have not exactly fallen in love with the Ys series, but I had a really good time with Ys VIII, specifically, so I’m really looking forward to seeing it in novel form!

So David Uzumeri got me onto the Ys series (and Trails, but more on that later) and in the last month or so I’ve played the entirety of both Ys VIII and IX. 

Ys VIII is maybe my new platonic ideal of a JRPG? It’s just so...nice to play. The characters are great, the combat is satisfying, even the hilariously stiff way characters move during cutscenes is entertaining. It’s bolstered by the plot, which is very built around community support and togetherness. I think it’s lightened by the fact that there’s not really a central villain, so much as there’s a mystery to be solved and a theme of putting the past to bed. Anyway, I greatly enjoyed it, new Ys hyperfixation is a go.

Similarly, I greatly enjoyed Ys IX, but god the writing is terrible. There’s a side quest you pick up immediately upon getting your second playable character about how helping the poor is bad actually, and the main plot eventually hinges on a “well if you change this, then other bad stuff might happen in the future, who knows?” and like...yeah, no shit. There’s also another playable character who’s in a wheelchair, which I got really excited about, until it got time to control him and he literally transforms into a form that lets him walk. His entire storyline is about “fixing” his disability and it sucks. All that said, it’s still a damn fun game to play. Ys games are set in a world that’s like ours but a degree off—countries called Greek, Romn, Ispania, etc. This one is set in a place called Balduq Prison City and it’s meant very much to evoke early France, so there are lots of themes of revolution and more than a few Man in the Iron Mask references.

Because hyperfixation is a go, I’ve now got a list of Ys games and where they’ve been released so that I can play them all. The entire series has been updated, ported, and localized with the exception of  Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand (remade for PS2, but never localized). Fortunately, I was able to locate a fan translation, so I’m looking forward to that too.

as the maiden of the great tree, dana has a protector to accompany her wherever she goes, whether she likes it or not

dana doesn't believe that she needs someone to protect her and that you'd be better off protecting the city or some noble person living there

but neither of you can get out of this arrangement and while you try to not bother dana while she does her job, you still have to stick around her

though the two of you learn to get used to your situation, trying to view this as two friends spending time together, rather than a maiden and her bodyguard

still, you keep a respectable distance from dana, trying to be a friend to her, as well as her protector

you care about her a lot and not just because you're supposed to care for her

though whenever dana is in danger and you have to protect her, the two of you are reminded of the type of relationship you two truly are

in the end, she's above you and you're just here to protect her, even if it costs you your life

and while dana doesn't want you to jump into danger to protect her and wants to be your equal, you insist that this is what you have to do

because it's your job. and anyone could do your job, but only dana can do her job, as the maiden of the great tree…
