First off, I really like this song. Probably my favorite song that I have listened to by The Pharcyde. It's so fun to listen, I love humming along to it, and while I did not link the music video, that is also pretty fun to watch.
Secondly, while I was doing something else I had this fun thought: imagine if in a hypothetical New X-Men movie, the opening used this song as part of a montage to David Alleyne/Prodigy getting up and going to a normal school, eventually cutting to something going wrong or him finally at the Xavier Institute when the next time the song says "Drop." The idea is that it establishes a type of normal, an upbeat type of day, for Prodigy before he discovered he is a mutant.

listening to rakim and the pharcyde rn and just thinking it's actually kinda weird that more ppl haven't pointed out how much miles' taste in music affects his life and viewpoint in general
and how being raised by his uncle who's into more old school stuff on earth-42 would affect him and his development
i'm imagining 42 actually clowning 1610 for listening to post malone while placing a labcabincalifornia vinyl on his record player while they chill in his room one day lol
42's tastes would probably be more varied and just... like more developed in general bc he has a man who was more than likely a Part Of The Culture helping to raise him. aaron was out on the streets of brooklyn as a kid most likely swapping diy mixtapes and buying local rap cd's with his allowance/summer job money (assuming he was born like around 1978-1980, then he was most likely on the streets in the mid 90's during the Golden Age of Hip Hop).
not to mention that for aaron to even Do What He Does as the prowler, he is still out on the streets til this day, shooting the shit with fellow neighbors and shaking hands with black market merchants. he's dapping up store owners and trying to get on local gang leaders' good sides for intel. he's making connections! he is most def still swapping music recommendations with ppl in the hood and ordering vinyls online if he can't get his hands on them in physical brick-and-mortar stores
and music seems to be a super important thing to a man like aaron. that would definitely influence miles. interesting that i haven't seen more posts mentioning that actually!
#clown horn#miles g morales#aaron davis#miles morales#spiderverse#New York by rakim started playing while i was writing this too lol#but anyways#aaron stepping in all Cultured and shit#most likely growing up around elders when HE was a kid just knowing abt the black panthers#and the general revolutionary spark in the air that him+his neighbors lived with for a while#hearing stories of little rap cyphers being performed up and down brooklyn streets. maybe watchin some of them?#political raps and songs and anecdotes flying around the streets#and then eventually in the hallways of his and jeff's school#growing up listening to krs one. common. rakim. lupe fiasco. nwa#yanno what i mean?#the streets of nyc were Woke yall. lots of black ppl in the hoods were radicalized af#so i imagine it would be quite! important! for aaron to pass that culture and wisdom down to his nephew#and since he's obviously spending more time with miles in 42 as opposed to 1610 aaron with miles#42 would be Much More Influenced by him#yall pickin up what im putting down? 👀#anyways completely unrelated but do you guys think miles g and hobie would get along way better than most ppl would think? :)#IM JUST SAYING#aaron and miles42 are confirmed to be vigilantes on e42 instead of villains#and i think its bc the writers of spiderverse took into account what a spiderman-less earth would look like#but more than that. what a spiderman-less PROWLER would look like#now that the prowler isnt being thwarted by a dude in a spandex costume all the time#and we KNOW aaron is not a bad man. he never had a choice in his circumstances and he loved miles so so so much#so considering all that.... goddamn yall you know what?#we might get to see a Woke Ass Miles in btsv maybe. hm!#a more mature miles. a miles that 1610 could quite.... possibly even.... yearn to be....? 👁 👁

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On Friday, July 12, 2024, SummerStage, in association with Fusicology & Future x Sounds, presented a free show in Herbert Von King Park in Brooklyn in celebration of producer J Dilla’s 50th birthday. There were DJ sets from Breakbeat Lou and Rich Medina plus live performances by Detroit’s Slum Village (J Dilla was a member of the group) and South Central Los Angeles’ The Pharcyde, whose sophomore album, Labcabincalifornia, was produced by J Dilla and released in 1995.
I covered the celebration concert on Friday night for BrooklynVegan and the full gallery is now available on their website here.

We Legalized It 2024: Cypress Hill, The Pharcyde, & Souls of Mischief Live at Tabernacle
On January 16th, 2024, the legendary Cypress Hill announced one of the hottest tours in 2024, We Legalized It 2024 featuring Cypress Hill w/ California hip hop legends The Pharcyde & Souls of Mischief. It has been a goal of mine to photograph not only Souls of Mischief but also Cypress Hill, so this tour with The Pharcyde was icing on the cake for my hopes and dreams. I have seen Cypress Hill a few times over the years, but I knew this tour would be something special bringing out fellow West Coast vets The Pharcyde and Souls of Mischief.
Cypress Hill is a West Coast hip-hop/rap rock/hardcore hip-hop/gangsta rap/psychedelic rap group from South Gate, CA. that formed in 1988. Cypress Hill consists of Louis “B-Real” Freese (vocals), Senen “Sen Dog” Reyes (vocals), Eric “Eric Bobo” Correa (drums/percussion), Lawerence “DJ Muggs” Muggerud (turntables/samples) and while on tour Lord “DJ Lord” Asword (turntables/samples/vocals). It is worth noting that B-Real, Sen Dog, and DJ Muggs are founding members of Cypress Hill. They have released ten (10) LPs and have been nominated for numerous awards including the Grammy’s.
Souls of Mischief is a groundbreaking alternative hip-hop/West Coast hip-hop group from East Oakland, CA. forming in 1991. Souls of Mischief features A-Plus, Phesto, Opio, and Tajai (also most noted as members of the hip-hop supergroup Hieroglyphics). Souls of Mischief has released six (6) LPs and fourteen (14) Singles. They have released six (6) LPs (including the debut album 93’ Til Infinity) and various singles over their historic career. When I first heard their debut album in 1993, I was overcome by so many feelings and emotions after listening to this record. Each member’s lyrical techniques, the unique production of each track, the blissful feeling after listening to this album, and the positive message this group personifies make Souls of Mischief one of my all-time favorite hip-hop groups.
Last year, I was fortunate to catch Souls of Mischief on their 30th Anniversary ’93 Til Infinity tour at City Winery in Atlanta, GA. So, I had a feeling how energetic and addictive their live show would be. I was over the moon when Souls of Mischief started the night with “You Never Knew” a Hieroglyphics track. Since I have not seen Hieroglyphics perform yet, this was special for me, and I am sure more people in the crowd have been fans of Souls of Mischief/Hieroglyphics. Getting to hear Souls of Mischief play some of their hits off their debut album; “Let ‘em Know”, “Live and Let Live”, “’93 Til Infinity”, and “Never No More” was very satisfying after a long day before this concert. I appreciated seeing people of all ages in the crowd singing along to the Souls of Mischief set. It proved that no matter the era, if the music is good people will love it regardless of when it was released.
Check out Souls of Mischief’s Official website to see all their announced dates in 2024!
The Pharcyde is a progressive rap/alternative hip-hop group that formed in 1983 in South Central Los Angeles, CA. The Pharcyde has released four (4) LPs, one (1) EP, three (3) Compilations, eleven (11) Singles, and six (6) music videos. The Pharcyde’s first four albums are all incredible in the hip-hop genre, most notably their first two (2) releases: Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde and Labcabincalifornia. The original members of The Pharcyde included Imani (Emandu Wilcox), Slimkid3 (Trevant Hardson), Fatlip (Derrick Stewart), and Bootie Brown (Romye Robinson). The Pharcyde is currently touring with three original members: Imani, Slimkid3, and Fatlip.
My first time watching The Pharcyde perform was a rather eclectic tour in 1996 at the long-forgotten venue International Ballroom in Atlanta, GA. This was the Life is Peachy Tour headlined by Korn which had none other than The Pharcyde as one of the openers. So, it has been quite a while since I had the chance to see The Pharcyde do their thing on stage. The crowd in attendance was treated to some of The Pharcyde’s best tracks: “Ya Mama”, “Passin’ Me By”, “Runnin”, and “Oh Shit” to name a few. You could see The Pharcyde having way too much fun on stage, and I know they enjoyed the crowd’s eager participation throughout their electrifying set. I hope that The Pharcyde can continue this bizarre ride they have created over the years and keep rocking crowds in the future.
Check out The Pharcyde’s Official YouTube Channel so you can listen to some of their music today!
Cypress Hill has performed phenomenally every time I have seen them play live. At last year’s Shaky Knees (2023) performance, Cypress Hill performed their second album, Black Sunday, in its entirety to celebrate the 30th anniversary of that album. Once DJ Lord warmed up the crowd, Cypress Hill started the night off with a classic track off Black Sunday, “Cock the Hammer”, and the crowd went wild rapping along to B-Real and Sen Dog. Since the start of Souls of Mischief’s set, the crowd kept ahold of the same intense vibe throughout each set. As Cypress Hill blazed through track after track from their 36-year career, I was elated to hear a good number of tracks from their self-titled debut album Cypress Hill and Black Sunday. To end the set, Cypress Hill had the help of some special friends including DJ Hurricane, Prince Paul, The Pharcyde, Souls of Mischief, and members of the Dungeon Family to perform a snippet of House of Pain’s “Jump Around”.
Check out Cypress Hill’s career-spanning setlist from Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA. below:
