Weapons File from Battle Action Force No. 598, dated 18 October 1986. The SA80 or Enfield Endeavour as it is called here. Introduced in the British Armed Forces in 1985, but upgraded by Heckler & Koch in the 2000's, it's probably more commonly referred to as the L85 family of guns with the most recent variant being the L85 A3.
It replaced the SLR (Self-Loading Rifle), otherwise known as the L1A1, the FAL (if you're a Call of Duty player) or "that gun with the wooden bits you got with Action Man".
The Light Support Weapon, the L86, shown above had also been given the commercial name of the Enfield Engager.
The L86 family are a "bullpup" design  where the trigger grip is located in front of the breech and magazine instead of behind them, reducing the overall length of the gun. In the case of the SA80, and some other bullpups, this made firing them left-handed (or with a dominant left eye) 'difficult' as the ejection port is next to the face and the bullet cases exited to the right. This could result in quite a mouthful. Some bullpups are ambidextrous so not sure why the L85 was set up like this other than tradition. The FAMAS, for example, was the first bullpup in military service in the 1970's but could be converted to either left or right handed use.
The L85 is going to be replaced soon. I don't think a final decision has been made however some parts of the UK Armed Forces are going to be issued with the non-bullpup Knight's Stoner 1 (KS-1, below).

L1A1 🇬🇧 SLR [British FN FAL - Iron Sights] to 600yds
I recall being amazed by reading that the typical engagement distance was 600 yards with iron sights, but haven’t gotten to try that myself.

22 November 2289 / Undisclosed Location
Picked up this horrifically ugly chopped down IMI ROMAT from the armorer. She was selling it for dirt cheap, almost like she was trying to get rid of it. The receiver was in fine condition so I swapped out some parts and managed to build a fine LSW out of it. This one will get shipped to County Crossing along with a handful of other small arms to be issued to the Minutemen stationed there.
Below: the finished product. Refurbished dust cover, compensated heavy barrel, G-series carry handle, high-impact polymer forend and a walnut stock.

The company, formed in 2010 to combat Somali piracy, has grown to the world’s largest maritime risk management firm, said Hutchinson. Armed security is one part of a much larger portfolio that includes providing proprietary data-driven intelligence about looming threats that helps shipping companies mitigate risks. [...] They use bolt action or semi-automatic rifles like the L1A1 and Steyr because they operate under British maritime law, which precludes the use of fully automatic weapons in these circumstances.

You choose:3
I’m going to take Ask For Advice/Rant About Something in order to ask a very specific question I’ve been mulling over for an upcoming project.
So, I know you already know about this (you helped a bunch with it :))) but for everyone else who doesn’t - I’m currently working on my own Hilda-esque original project called Emmy and the Four Winds. I’m going to do a big announcement/details post sometime soon, and my amazing significant other @furashuban has already written something for it, but right now I’m trying to work out a very specific thing:
This setting has its own force similar to the Safety Patrol, known as the Mountain Rangers (working title) - they’re mainly based on how I like to like to portray the Patrol - a gendarmerie incorporating policing, search-and-rescue, and protecting people from magical creatures (they’re… weirdly close to the US Coast Guard in terms of organisation, now I think about it), and they have a long and proud history. One major supporting character is a reservist for them, too.
The thing is, I’m torn on what to arm the rangers with - the character I mentioned above has a bolt-action rifle, and my initial plan was to limit all the guns in this setting to roughly 1910s technology (even though otherwise it’s the 80s). However, the reserve structure of the rangers is heavily inspired by the Canadian Rangers, so it’s perfectly possible for the reservists to have bolt-guns and the patrol firearms officers to have more modern weaponry. What I’m now considering is bringing firearms up to the same 1980s tech level, and having frontline officers carry FAL rifles (specifically the L1A1, for those that know):
Tumblr media
So, the basic question is this - do I give the Rangers bolt-action rifles, or Cold War-era assault rifles? Sorry this is dumb and very specific but it’s been on my mind a lot

There's a fair amount of 28mm FALs on the market (usually marketed either FAL, SLR or L1A1) but all of them are Cold War stuff, which makes sense since the OG FAL look is golden.
But it would be cool to see about having a more modernized FAL on the market for 28mm scale models.
Mainly for shits and giggles really.

It's standard issue Saturday! Today's spotlight is on the FN FAL platform of .308 battle rifles.
The FN FAL is a Belgian-designed, gas-operated, magazine-fed battle rifle. Immediately following WWII many nations sought to modernize their small arms, with NATO going all-in on the .308 round still common in the wasteland. While the U.S. struggled to modernize its WW2 service rifle in the M14 project, the rest of the Western world adopted variations of this rifle as their standard issue. It was first adopted in Canada as the C1A1 in 1954, over three centuries ago now.
In the 23rd century these types of rifles are commonly seen in the hands of Militia reservists, or in installations beset by tougher monsters where more stopping power is a necessity. The L2A1 fully automatic variant is in use in the support gunner role by Minutemen where heavier weapons like the M60 are either unavailable or impractical. Usually these weapons sport a StG 58 style black forearm for easier identification.
Below: Polymer furniture (rifle and LSW, respectively) variants with non-slip SAW type pistol grips. These kinds of rifles are more likely to be used by Militiamen; the above wood-furnished models are more popular with Minutemen.
