Prins Póló - Læda slæda (Let It Slide)
Requested by @zagrebus, this is a song about restraining your violent impulses in everyday situations. Apologies for taking a bit to get to this!
Icelandic transcript
English translation
I'm sitting here on the toilet about to wipe and judging from the smell someone was here before me who finished all the toilet paper right on their ass but didn't put another roll on the toilet paper stand so what I really want to do is to go berserk, go out into the corridor with my pants on my heels, and pick this shithead up by the ears and show him just a fraction of my darkest thoughts, yes
Now I've just arrived in Skeifan with the turn signal on and I'm going to park in this spot, it's the spot that's mine but then some jerk comes along and parks right in it Just acting like he owns it And my first thought is to floor it and crash right into his side, I know it'll hurt Smash the piece of junk, drive it into oblivion but then I have a shining epiphany and you know what:
I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide
It's seven o'clock and I'm going to watch the news but when I turn the TV on it's already over It was moved earlier because of some amazingly important extremely necessary live broadcast What I'd most like to do is take my idiot box and throw it out beyond the horizon but then I remember that the insurance payments for my home insurance have been lowered
So I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide
Now I'm in the store and I'm buying groceries but the line is so long and only one checkout lane open but then suddenly the lane beside it opens and the guy behind me is the first in line I want to just slam him down on his face easily make him horizontal on the conveyor, then wrap a bag around his head and send him straight to Hell
But I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide, I'll let this slide
I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide I'll let it slide, I'll let it slide, I'll let this slide
Translation notes
"Læda slæda" is a phonetic misspelling of "læt það slæda", which in turn is a direct word-for-word translation of the English phrase "let it slide"; "slæda" is just "slide" as a loanword adjusted to inflect like an Icelandic verb. Læd'etta slæda is a similarly phonetic way to write "læt þetta slæda" (let this slide). These are not standard or entirely transparent spellings, note; I had no idea what the title "Læda slæda" was supposed to mean until I heard it in context in the song. I only spelled it that way in writing up the lyrics because that's the official spelling of the title.
Skeifan ("The Horseshoe") is a street in Reykjavík housing a lot of stores and businesses.
"Drusla", as I've mentioned before, is a word that can be used similarly to 'slut' in English (Slutwalk is called Druslugangan in Icelandic) but the more common meanings are a trashy piece of clothing or a trashy car; here, it's obviously the trashy car meaning, which I translated as "piece of junk".
"Imbakassi" is a derogatory word for a TV, which is possibly a calque of "idiot box" or otherwise similarly derived - "imbi" is a word for an idiot which you don't really hear outside of this particular compound, "kassi" means a box. Obviously, I rendered this as idiot box.
Technically he wants to send the guy at the store til skrattans or to the devil, but it sounded more natural in English to describe it as "straight to Hell".
