the entire original pilot of the manga. this was when it was going to be made for webtoons, so we were following their structure. now, this pilot will be redone entirely more in a manga style that is black and white. that is how the entire series will be going forward, but this is cool to look back on where it started. some of the pilot has changed, but this is a good visual to get an idea of at least ren and kyosuke, who are the two main characters as we know so far.

as we knew we were going away from webtoons, obviously the progress stopped, it's only the first several pages that are fully rendered. otherwise, it's more like storyboarding and sketching, which i find very cool. i love to see the process.

two hands, one final 'on sale' carton of milk. miya looks next to her as her hand meets another's. their eyes meet, and for an uncomfortably long moment it seems neither of them can speak.

he looked a bit different dressed down, but wasn't this..?

after a moment, she slowly retracts her hand. " err, you can have it. haha.. " this was awkward. so incredibly awkward!

long nights stretch into longer days. no way of avoiding it — they have to go shopping. the happy mart is full of focused faces, half of them somber, the other half engrossed in their tasks. hatanaka yori is wrangling his young son, kyosuke, who is enamored with the many sales the market is offering today. he is eager, pointing out different items, and yori takes a moment to stray into the beauty aisle before rejoining his young son near the vegetables an open aisle over.

they grab a few ears of corn, a couple radishes, and a few other stray items that will eventually make what seems to be a stew of sorts. only one package of meat is procured (so expensive!), and their basket is only missing one thing. kyosuke has been on a cereal kick lately, so yori takes his son's hand to lead him towards the refrigerators that hold gallons of milk, yogurts, and various cheeses, among an eclectic variety of other items that require cold temperatures only.

kyosuke points out the on-sale gallon, encouraging his father to reach where he cannot, and yori goes to grab for it. his hand almost holds another when it lands, looking over and peering from behind his glasses. the collar of his sweater feels a little tight at the neck all of a sudden, clearing his throat out of sheer uneasiness as he attempts to recover.

❝ not at all, ❞ he says, and it's not yori's voice, but that sultry tone ren likes to take. hard to turn it off, it seems. then the pitch changes, and he's back to being father yori again. ❝ uh, you can have it. it's really no trouble. we can get another one. right, kyosuke? ❞

the boy is shy, hiding behind his dad's legs as he peers out to nod sadly. the child loves a deal, it seems. he really needs to stay out of the bill, yori thinks.

❝ er, thank you, though. ❞ he bows his head.

nice to meet you, he unofficially says without saying it. a falsehood — they have met before. he knows it / she knows it. but she does not know yori. he wonders if she'll come back to the club now. in a way, he hopes she doesn't. nothing personal ... well, that's not true; it's entirely personal — for me.

he pushes back his loose hair, squinting before avoiding further eye contact, pretending to seek out other options of dairy. a half-gallon will substitute fine.

ren has had other nicknames and slides before settling on ren as his professional alias -> he has been "ren" / playing the character of ren for so long that the persona has bled over to his real life. he's only "yori" for such a small amount of his days that it feels like another person entirely. in reality his mother is the only one that calls him yori, and he's otherwise regarded as hatanaka-san. kyosuke's mother calls him yori when she's mad, which he's noticed is more often now. being the confident, attractive and single ren is more comfortable than being the awkward, self-conscious young dad yori.

As the 'mediator chapter' between the pilot and chapter 2 is actually being posted tonight, I figured an introduction to this full cast is necessary! And will be helpful going forward.

FIRST THINGS FIRST: WHO IS WHO?

Hatanaka Yori 畠中頼 (Hatanaka’s kanji meaning ‘in the midst of fields’ and Yori meaning ‘trust’). This is our main character and the father to Hatnaka Kyosuke. This is what you could consider our "primary protagonist" next to his secondary protagonist, who is the #2 host Sho. You'll read more about Sho shortly.

A bit about Ren:

Age: 27

DOB: August 17

Professional Alias: Ren 恋 (kanji meaning ‘love’), sometimes called 'boss' or 'Manager Ren'

Occupation: The #1 host and manager of the host club Shining! under the leadership of Watanabe Goro — Ren is the club's romantic type. He considers himself Shining's! King, often referring to himself that way.

Watanabe Goro 渡辺五楼 (Watanabe meaning “cross, pass over” and Goro meaning “tower”). He is known collectively and globally as solely “That Man”. HJe is a main character. Goro is the boss to Ren. We know him as Goro now...as that is what he is currently going by. He is what most host clubs have running the operation from behind the scenes, so many consider Goro to be Yakuza-affiliated, but this is not the case.

Alias: We assume Watanabe Goro could be an alias

Occupation: The actual owner of the host club Shining!...and many other businesses in the Red-Light District (Kabukichō).

Hatanaka Kyosuke 畠中恭佑. A main character, he is the son of Ren. We do not know who his mother is yet. About to go into the first year of primary school.

Age: Almost 6

DOB: December 12

#2 Host Sho 初: meaning “soar, fly,” or “prize, reward,” occasionally meaning “general” depending on the kanji used.

Age: 23

Occupation: Ren’s #2 host and subordinate

Host Type: Genki

The Rookie: Haru - #10, the newest host / can mean “light, sun, male, or spring.” Haru is a gender-neutral name.

The Angelic Type: Ringo - #9 / meaning “apple.”

The Devlish Type: Katsu - #8 / meaning “victory.” 

the athletic type: Daisuke - #7 / a gender-neutral japanese name meaning “great, big, or help.”

The Wild Type: Sōta - #6 / meaning “sound of the wind” plus “big, thick.”

The Gentle Type: Yūto - #5 / can mean “excellence, gentleness, superiority or permanence with person,” or “soar or fly.”

The Artistic Type: Rōnin - #4 / meaning “drifter or wanderer.”

The Intellectual Type: Satoshi - #3 / meaning “intelligent or sharp.”

The hosts are regarded by locals as 'The Rabbits of the Red-Light District'.

so idk if you have ever talked about this before but do yori and ren's lives ever intersect with each other , like do they feel each other's actions or memories ever ? do people ever mix them up , do they have similar haunts or other such things ? and if so how do they deal with it and how much do they actually know of each other?

this is an amazing question, you're getting me back into the thick of things! so i'll refer to the overall person / character of "ren" as hatanaka to make it a little easier while "ren" and "yori" are basically like characters that hatanaka is playing, but it's hard to say that "ren" or "yori" individually are more "close to" who hatanaka is — they are intentionally kept very separate, but both are very much part of who "hatanaka" is as a person.

ren is the person that hatanaka wishes he could be — not without kyosuke, but having the confidence, being sexy and desirable, flirty, the appeal to others, being "free" with "no strings attached", expressive, even a bit immature at times, yet still "has it all together" ... but being "ren" allows hatanaka to also be the worst parts of himself or indulge in the more flawed characteristics he has such as overindulgence, pride, lust, greed, envy (this trait he shares with "yori" for different reasons, they are insatiably envious), etc.

yori is who hatanaka is in that he is the "father" that hatanaka naturally is. he is very good with children, calm, patient, he's very family oriented, very almost "plain" i would say. but being yori allows hatanaka to not only be the person he was "born as", but also it embodies all of his fears, anxieties, stresses, his complexes and hangups. "yori" will always be attached to "ren" for several main reasons, primarily kyosuke.

while ren doesn't advertise that he is a "hosting father" (he doesn't want to use kyosuke to his advantage, it feels wrong), he still sees "ren" or "himself" as kyosuke's father. it's just that he doesn't want kyosuke to come across this life at all, as a child or adult, and he tells his family that he is a bartender (not the most far-off lie, there is a bar in shining! but ... well, we know better as the audience than that).

their lives begin to intersect generally when a third party member is involved such as hina, for example. she is one of the "first" to start seeing ren as "ren" before their relationship progressed into "yori" territory. she often calls him by either name depending on how she feels. after all, her last name was very briefly hatanaka. other characters do this, too, such as sho (genkigang, the canonical second host to ren and his love interest). sho is what i call a "plot pusher", but that's not all he is. he just has the personality to carry a story forward, whereas yori / ren are keener to "stay the same" in stagnancy. sho is the one that reveals that ren is a father in the MDIAH comic, for example. ren has been hiding his identity as a father for a long time, but it is sho that continues to push the narrative. sho is nosy, but it's very good for a character like ren, thus they do very well together.

sometimes hatanaka has been caught out-and-about by a client from either his time hosting, his escorting, or later (in rp) his time as a rental bf, which is usually a bit jarring as he dresses and looks pretty different in comparison. ren is a suited man, gloves, a tie, slicked-back hair that's styled to the side, nice shoes, a watch, etc. yori is more plain, casual, and fatherly. he often has to "get back in" to his character as "ren", basically saving face, or he'll outright pretend it isn't him if able.

they share all the same memories as ren is not supernaturally endowed in any shape or form, there are a few "things" about him but nothing so substantial it's noticeable if that makes sense? between goro, ji-hun, deng, and ren? ren is the weakest, normal human figure in this unholy square. he is an "investment", he is not necessarily a "player", but he has "player actions" or a "main character" kind of syndrome going on. he is the "main character", after all, but even that? it's more tongue-in-cheek. this is ren / yori's story that is being highlighted, but it's not all about him.

for similar haunts, hatanaka tends to keep his "ren" business to certain locations — snack bars, love hotels, their place, etc. yori does not go to those places, at least not often, and he tries to not cross the same streets so to speak.

hatanaka is basically living almost a "triple" life, but it's primarily a dual-identity thing. day as dad, night as host. but at the end of the day, "ren" and even "yori" as just extensions of a singular man, and that man doesn't really know himself.

if we're going way off into like my twin au for rp, there's a whole lot of its own drama in that regard ddfasgdg but i hope this clears things up !!

CREDITS: particularly to this lore, the idea started with @/genkigang (on hiatus) and her character sho (#2 host, the genki type). through sho developed ren, as sho needed a #1 host to compete with. the idea of shining! and many of its designs were made by genkigang.

Please don't overexert yourself." she gives him a warm smile as she places the tray on the coffee table in front of him. "Kyo did you you bring the cookies you made for your papa?" her attention now at the child, tenderness visible on her expression. / * @flxwergxrden [ erato ]

engrossed in his phone, hatanaka is currently keeping up several conversations with several very, very different individuals. one demanding his services sooner than later, another apt to hang off his dominance, and another insisting for his submission. sighing, he runs a hand through his hair before looking up from his once private stupor, softening at the sight of his son waving for his attention. gives a genial wave back, encouraging kyosuke to come to him with open arms. 

after a brief hug, the boy turns to acknowledge her request, trotting off as instructed to fetch and subsequently deliver his father warm cookies to accompany his steaming tea. hatanaka gingerly takes a sip, careful not to burn himself. steeped perfectly with a smooth, finished blend, and left plain just the way he likes. 

hatanaka feels the warmth in his belly relax what had once been knotted. 

❝ ah, thank you, son. ❞ hatanaka rubs the back of kyosuke’s head as he meets her gaze with a humble nod of appreciation. ❝ and thank you, eri-san. your help has been invaluable to me. ❞
