There is definitely a noticeable pink to Fannar's cheeks at the questioning. While he's very rarely think to say it aloud, it's always flattering when people take an interest in is country. The past few years have seen Iceland become somewhat of a 'bucket-list destination' for tourists and yet, centuries upon centuries of isolation and nobody really paying his country much mind, well — it still makes Fannar feel warm inside, when it happens.
"Yes, I'm an island too." That actually brings up an interesting question; Fannar isn't sure how the climates compare between their homes. Would Iceland be considered cold, compared to the islands of Japan? Though he most certainly would miss the cold, were he to leave Iceland behind (again). Denmark is nice, certainly, but nothing compares to home. He distinctly recalls the many years spent in Denmark, longing for his cold, his snow.
Just as he goes to reply, though, Kiku steps in to explain, and Fannar just nods along. Kiku mentions "even if he could visit" - which means, for some reason, he can't. Fannar decides it is probably more polite not to ask, and so he just nods, though a polite, understanding smile graces his features too. Yes, the cold isn't for everyone, that's for sure. North of Hokkaido, though — that must be cold, right? It sounds cold. If he's not mistaken, he's quite sure that he read that Japan had quite a varied climate. He'll have to do more research.
Fannar listens politely, although he's quite sure that he wasn't mistaken when he noticed Akimitsu looking a little bit uneasy for a moment, there. But, then the attention is more turned to him, and he blushes a little. He waves his hands, a little bashfully, and stifles a cough into one hand.
"Oh, no — I'm enjoying getting to know you all," he says, with a smile shared between them all. "Well — Let's see... Iceland, it can be pretty cold, but generally it is fairly mild because of warm ocean currents. In winter, it is usually maybe −5°C, −10°C. In summer, maybe 10°C. So, it's not so cold, but sometimes it drops to −20°C or −30°C, especially in the north or inland." A little shrug, and he clears his throat behind one hand. "We, uh — we have very strong, very unpredictable weather, though. Two air currents meet over Iceland, which means we have very extreme weather, even in summer. About 80% of my country is uninhabitable, and the weather is too severe to build roads or grow trees or anything."
After thinking for a moment, he unlocks his phone, and opens up his photo gallery. There are a few photos there: the first is little more than a wasteland of black stones on the ground, a mountain on the horizon, and the grey cloudy sky. The second, a more green-inspired mossy landscape, but still largely made up of volcanic rock, and with absolutely no vegetation. The third, mountains rolling into glaciers and volcanic rock. They all give the impression of just how barren Iceland is, and Fannar coughs briefly into his hand again as he offers the phone for them all to take a look at.
"There are some parts of Iceland that are much more... um, green. We have a nature reserve that has lots of grass, and we grow a lot of lupines. But, this is sort of what most of my country looks like." A pause, and then to Kazuhiko — "I would miss the cold, too, if I were to leave it again. I like visiting warmer climates, but I always miss the cold eventually."
Once they all got a chance to look at the photos, he sets it back by his side, and once more folds his hands against his knees. To Miko and Akimitsu, he smiles. "In the past, back in Iceland, we had to be very good at fishing as well. It's not so important now, but it used to be. So, your islands are much warmer than mine — and Kazuhiko's?" A glance over. "Is it always very sunny, or does it rain? I can't really imagine it."
islandiis:
“Y-yes, of course,” Fannar replies, although his cheeks do warm slightly; He knows himself well enough that he knows, he’s go hungry before asking for anything. He should probably work on that, shouldn’t he? He hardly seems to notice the plea being directed towards Kiku, though, if it clicks at all. “Thank you.”
They all take their seats, and Fannar’s eyes are bright and interested. They all look quite different, so much personality among them, he imagines. It must be nice having so many brothers and sister, close in age as well as proximity; as much as he loves his own family, there is still quite a disconnect from them. Or, was, in the past. Modern times have allowed for more closeness, but the plant grows from past seeds, and their relationships will probably always feel a little bit distant solely based on that fact. Does this lot live together, he wonders? Attend school together? They must be close — how nice.
He nods in greeting to them all, including Chikae — and there’s a small tug of empathy in his chest as she skirts off, since he has some idea as to what that is like. It’s been a long time, in his case, but he remembers how it feels clear as day. His own cheeks rosy slightly to Kiku’s explanation — somehow, Fannar imagines that Kiku is a ‘tough love’ sort of guardian, at least in some ways. Similar to his own older brother in that sense, but… well, perhaps not as detached. The sigh then draws his attention, and Fannar has to make a concerted effort not to laugh. He doesn’t want to be rude, after all! But he does smile, small and sheepish, and he hopes it doesn’t come off as rude at all.
He really isn’t sure what Kazuhiko goes to say, so the look of faint confusion is entirely genuine, and he has no intention of asking given Kiku’s response (nor is it really any of his business, is it?). So, he wants to enlist? That’s interesting; it’s good to have a passion, so young. Something to work towards! And Kiku seems encouraging, too. His smile returns as soon as the questions begin to fly, and he sets his cup down so he can fold his hands politely against his knees.
“My name is Fannar,” He answers, quite happily. It’s always good to encourage kids’ curiosity, isn’t it? And he doesn’t mind; it’s nice that they would be interested! “I’m from Iceland, in Northern Europe.”
At the very least, Kazuhiko’s questioning doesn’t prompt Miko to start peppering Fannar with them either; they were right to the point, so she looks on with satisfaction, albeit a bit of confusion. Unfortunately, she misses the chance to ask where, exactly, Iceland is in the region. Unlike Kazuhiko, she isn’t particularly fond of geography. He’s already moved on, and so must she.
"An island, right? I’ve seen lots of maps! It must be super cold up there, my islands get cold sometimes, too! I kinda miss it though, do you think you’d miss the cold if you had to live here for a while?” Kazuhiko plops his head into his hands in thought, with his elbows on the table. He’s barely tall enough to make it work without having to strain his neck.
“He’s lived here for just over three decades,” Kiku adds, hoping some context will be just enough. The last thing he wants is to cause some sort of ripple in the international community by talking too much about their disputed status. “But Chishima province was even north of Hokkaido, so it’s got very unforgiving climate. I get cold easily, so even if I could visit, I’d never last a second.”
Kazuhiko smiles widely, clearly proud of himself for being able to survive cold temperatures– but as much as he claims to miss it, he does appreciate the warmth offered by the main island, even when it’s unbearably humid in the summer.
“It’s much easier to live on our islands! Kind of…” Miko takes the opportunity to butt in, and also to brag her and her brother up a bit. “It’s always warm. But… you have to be really good at fishing to eat, and sometimes the big ships get annoying.”
Visibly uncomfortable, Akimitsu squirms where he’s sitting. “I like it here better. Japan is still an island, so it’s not like much has changed…” he scolds. Even Kiku seems surprised at his speaking out of turn, and rather than let them fight, he intervenes the same as he did with Kazuhiko.
“Let’s listen for a bit instead of interrupting.” Kiku turns to Fannar with a bit of an apologetic look about him. “I appreciate your being patient, they’re all easily a century old but haven’t had the chance to grow much, so…”

Swatching my inks on Iroful paper and Tomoe River paper for comparison
I don't think anything can beat the way TR shows sheening haha, some of the sheening inks are like 99% sheen and 1% actual colour 😂
It's also interesting that some swatches look more cool-toned on the Iroful paper; Sailor Yurameku Kyokkou, Sailor Yurameku Hana-gokoro, Ink Institute Mexican Hens, and Sailor Yurameku Kitsune-biyori
I always seem to have trouble capturing Sailor Shikiori Sakura-mori, Kin-mokusei, and Sailor Manyo Sakura on camera. They are NOT that neon irl and are very legible. Manyo Sakura is more on the lighter side but it still isn't like what those photos are showing, I enjoyed journaling with it this summer!

Originally, this was going to be about Momo's fighting style, & it still is to an extent, but it became more about how ruthless Momo is.
Momo primarily relies on guerilla warfare. I think most people understand what guerilla warfare is, but I'll give a rundown of what I've gleaned to be its basics: sabotage, raids, ambushes, terrorism, hit & run, petty warfare, etc.
Some of this doesn't apply to Momo. I don't qualify Momo as a terrorist the way white nationalist groups, Islamic extremists, or private security agencies like the Wagner Group are. I think the Gotei as an institution is Horrible, but let's be real, Momo hasn't had the opportunity to enact or be complicit in that shit the way Sousuke, Genryusai, Retsu, Kenpachi, & Mayuri would be, & I don't think she would knowingly do so either, given her internal conflict over fighting Toushirou in chapter 131.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll look at it later how this encounter is unusual for Momo. However, the point as of now is to ascertain Momo isn't blase about the use of violence. Why else would she be weeping when she wholeheartedly believes she's avenging a loved one? It's sufficient evidence for a conscience.
Her jail brake in chapter 127 lends credence to this as well. Like, look at what she did in chapter 129.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Momo very easily could've killed this man. She could've blown a hole through him as easily as she blew through several iron bars & left no witnesses. But she didn't.
I think it's safe to say Momo has a conscience & isn't a terrorist.
However, she does use guerilla warfare.
Momo set traps & ambushes. Most famously, Momo sets up a web of kidou to incinerate the Tres Beastias in 334.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, there's a lot that's impressive about this shit: the scale of it, the fact she's able to set it up where no one is caught in it before the right moment, the fact she's ENTIRELY undetected by like two dozen people while setting it up.
However, Momo is mostly seen ambushing people. We see in chapter 333 that her entrance is an ambush.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the first time we see her ambush, but it isn't the last.
In chapter 556, Momo ambushes Bambietta after Shinji is incapacitated.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see her ambush, like, a half dozen Soldat to save Marechiyo in chapter 581 as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
No forewarning. Just a remorseless, summary execution.
& like, as a small sidebar, this isn't out of character for her. In chapter 335, Momo explains her kidou net, but pay attention to her expressions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Momo is entirely unbothered that she's incinerated three people. Like, she's smiling. I know she's unwell at this point & I know it's war, but she's in the same battlefield as someone who's made her life miserable for DECADES & she's smiling. Rangiku & Momo are confident enough that Momo's trap worked that their guard is lowered enough for some rumination. & Momo is bragging. After believing she's summarily executed three people.
Like, it's a fucking miracle the guard from chapter 129 where she breaks out of jail. Yes, she has a conscience but demonstrates no compunction with murder.
I think what's most impressive about Momo's capabilities as a guerilla warrior is her kyokkou.
Like, Bambietta is a competent person. We see in chapter 558, after her defeat, that the Femritter don't even approach her until after she's down.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm not an expert in Bambietta & I don't purport to be. However, I'm fairly certain that if Bambietta is more powerful than four Sternritter at their best, I feel like it can translate into notable reikaku.
Her skills in kyokkou are cemented early on, as seen in 335 where no one senses her or her trap, no one knows her position after her jailbreak in chapter 127, and Toushirou doesn't realize that she's busted out of his barrier in chapter 168.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, it proves she's a master of kidou, but that's not the point of this post. The point is: why is she so good at kyokkou? It's because she's partial to quick & quiet. It's something she's deliberately nurtured.
Like, I think if it weren't for Sousuke arranging to have her graduate into gobantai, Momo would've been placed in niibantai or found her way into the onmitsukidou.

Truth be told, Momo didn't see the pugilism coming. She should've, but didn't. God knows she's spent enough time as Jewel's warden to understand that a bloodthirsty woman like Jewel wouldn't even consider the fine art of kidou.
She can respect it. Mostly, she just envies they have an object to release their anger. Everyday, Momo has to keep herself from slitting throats, from making examples of her detractors for every fucking hyperviolent morons Sousuke and his plans birthed. Alas, execution is saved only for the most trying times. For mistakes so egregious not even demotion is satisfactory.
As Jewel wrestles the hollow, Momo shrouds herself in kyokkou, circles behind, and draws her sword. It's not hard to ascend the hollow. Jewel has it pretty well stunned and pinned in place. When Momo reached the head, she jammed it straight into its skull, eliciting a shrill, ear-piercing cry that would rupture the eardrums of any average mortal. Thankfully, she's far from average.
She digs it deeper and deeper while it thrashes and gurgles. Momo has to use sai to keep it from trampling Jewel despite her newfound confidence in their ability. She's not one to take chances on anything.
Tumblr media
"Snap, Tobiume!" she screams. Her sword sprouts prongs and bubbles with fire. The combustion splits the hollow's skull like a squashed melon, scattering bone shards and charred tissue. It's an even simpler spell to protect Jewel from the sting of splinters.
The legs of the remains give out. Ordinarily, it would kick up a significant amount of dust, but all this is so... simple. Simple enough to create a field to keep the dust down.
Using this amount of rapid-fire spells feels like she's using old muscles. Like she's stretching after a long nap.
Momo hops off its neck into the grass. She pushes back her singed bangs. "Do I still have my eyebrows?"
Every step is measured and pathways are locked in. Prisoners, guards - noted. By the time they reach the dunes, Jewel is certain that she could navigate the underground from her cell with her eyes closed and her arms bound if that were the case.
One of her assets as a Shinigami is memorizing geography and the fighting styles and attacks of those around her. Being confined to a glorified cage for months left her mind desperately starved, so when she's allowed out, she's eager to eat up the any new information in her environment.
It will not be forgotten.
Jewel is calm, quiet, and obedient on their hunt, taking in the blanched desert all the while. Clouds feather the dark skies with an increasing thickness in the distance; the air's nice and it's comfortable. There's so much space.
The taste of freedom is so close yet so far.
When the hollow comes into view, she lurches in place but stops herself. The sight of the beast gives her system a much wanted kick of adrenaline, but she doesn't attack unless attacked first. Though, being without her zanpakuto, the idea of challenging it felt tempting.
Jewel pinches her lips and wets them at hearing Momo's order. "Done."
Kicking off in a brief shunpo, she presents herself before the hollow and whistles up at it.
It immediately lunges for her, which she dodges.
Easy enough, but she's not in the mood for cat and mouse games right now. She craves more.
Instead of running, she keeps her distance long enough to round up a packed punch right into its snout. What she doesn't expect is that her strike forced the snout to concave into its head and cause it to wildly thrash about.
Fuck, it felt good to do that.

@kyokkou
Being a man who stood over six feet tall, Alexander was used to being among the tallest in any given room. However, being in Japan, where most people just barely reached his shoulders at best, always gave him the feeling of being a giant. It didn’t help that he often received stares, though he had learned to just brush them off. He was who he was, and they could simply deal with it.
It did offer him one advantage though, and that was seeing over crowds without issue. He had managed to locate his friend and fellow artist, for whom he was here, without issue. And now that their conversation had wound down and he let him talk with gallery patrons who were there for his art, Alex could focus on a new target. He hadn’t expected Japan himself to come to a simple art gallery opening, and he wasn’t about to let this chance slip away.
Moving through the crowd was easy, as everyone wanted to part way for him. He smiled at the other rep as he approached, trying to make sure he did not seem too intimidating. He offered a customary bow and greeted him in Japanese. “Hello, Nihon-san. I am Alexander Beilschmidt, or Berlin. It’s an honor to meet you, finally.”
