I'm curious if you have a take on the stalks of wheat on hen's jumper? It was such a stark image, as is appropriate for Hen with the most vibrant wardrobe! (Can't see them as well here, but the wheat stalks were such a strong visual focus of the scene, along with Buck's blue shirt.)

I wonder if they're going somewhere with the Greek Goddess Demeter? Remembering how it was Hen who explained the origins of Athena's name, how Beatrice named her after the "goddess of war." Curious if something is percolating for you!

Hey!!! Oh I have so many thoughts on that sweater - such an intentional choice! I will go into a bit more detail in my costume meta (hopefully posting tomorrow) but I have been having lots of thoughts about harvest and reaping what you sow and and yes Demeter is definitely a part of that thinking as the Goddess of the harvest and also because of Athena connection, but also the idea of time (yes more time metaphors!) being split in half - that Hen has been essentially dedicating half her time to study and half to work, but also being separated/distant from her family - all while trying to maintain that part of her life as well. The idea the Demeter created the seasons in response to being separated from Persephone for half the year - separated from her family is such a fascinating concept in connection to Hen and her story arc for this season - does she remain studying to become a doctor; which will separate her further from her family (both the firefam and Karen and Denny) or does she remain with the fire department and pursue moving up the career ladder - whatever that path looks like!

The other aspect I've been thinking about is the fact that those ears of wheat are embroidered - these were probably done by a machine, but in general the process of embroidery is a time consuming one - much like the growing of wheat, it takes time for the picture to appear when you are creating an embroidery - playing on the concept that both hen and Buck are in the middle of something and therefore cannot see the full picture yet - that it will all come together once all the various threads are in place - but until then it is hard to see what you are creating - even when you know what the end piece should look like!

The embroidery also has a potential connection to the fairy tale of Rumplestiltskin and the weaving of golden thread from straw - the connection being the idea of Hen trying to achieve the seemingly impossible - and in the process 'bartering' with her child (forgetting Denny's robotics club) but ultimately finding a way to overcome her issue and keep her child (something is going to have to give and when that time comes - Hen will put her family first).

So this is whats percolating for me - hopefully it sparks thoughts for you too! 😎💜

Hey! I wanted to ask you what do you make of eddie black shirt this ep? Cause my first thought was its the same as buck coming out scene but then also black is on both scenes with Kim of course and it also reminds me of widower eddie last season in 611, like its of course grieving but thr parallel with buck coming out scene threw me off

you might have already seen that kym did talk about it in her 7x07 costume meta since you sent this ask!!

I think that the black of it very much is meant to invoke the image of grief here in these two scenes (as well as the hospital scene in 6x11)! but also eddie wears black often enough that it is most likely not the only meaning for him (he for example also wears black during the balcony conversation with buck in 5x4!) and also in this case the fact that he keeps wearing the shirt after the coming out scene and into the marisol-oves-out-again scene probably also plays into it!

but yeah, kym makes some good points about it in her meta, so I can only recommend giving it a read <3

90s romeo and juliet supremacy forever

okay, you didn’t ask for this at all but i’m just extra and going to give it to you anyway. 

one thing i will never understand is people disliking that movie — especially bc the only ‘consistent’ (eg over the years the handful of people i’ve met that say they don’t like it) surface level criticism i ever see of it is the fact that it’s the original elizabethan text set in modern day and that ‘doesn’t’ make sense.

how?! how does it not make sense 😭not to sound like i’m up some 500 year old man’s ass (except that i completely am) but shakespeare’s original language enhances the storytelling bc the words and praises he uses open the door to so many more ways of expressing feelings and emotions. romeo and juliet has some of the most beautiful dialogue and by placing it in modern day, it’s made so much more accessible because the context is so much clearer and relatable. (did anyone else watch the 60s adaptation with the zac efron look alike in school? love it, but why would you go w that one for teenagers to try and connect to the work) 

baz luhrmann’s adaptation is camp, unique and all over the place in the best way. maybe i’m biased because i’ve always loved baz’s slightly off kilter signature style, but he took a story we’ve heard hundreds and times injected it with a new lease of life. shakespeare’s work is and will always be timeless – his words will exist long after we are gone, but how often does an adaptation of a play get referenced and drawn from consistently in media? for example, jules’ halloween costume on euphoria or hell, the entirety of skam season 3. the fish tank scene alone is iconic enough to garner it’s own references! shakespeare was a punk of his day and i truly believe that it’s exactly what he would’ve wanted for his work – especially 500 years later. 

plus, we get great performances from harold perrineau as mercutio – his queen mab speech is legendary, claire danes – who was only 17 and kills it and john leguizamo as tybalt – who is one of my favourite actors ever. to top it all off we get 2 hours of 90s leonardo dicaprio delivering poetry in a hawaiian shirt and wielding a gun – like, what more could you ask for in life? is it his career defining performance? no, but it’s still a bloody good one and i’ll argue with anyone over how he alone is worth the film’s icon status. 

this isn’t even mentioning baz’s music choices and how they too have earned their own reputation. kissing you by diseree? young hearts run free by kym mazelle? quindon tarver’s rendition of prince’s when doves cry? and my personal favourite talk show host by radiohead that kicked off my love for the band at 13. one of my favourite aspect’s of baz’s personal style is making music and the soundtrack as significant to the story as the characters are – and he does it so explicitly well in this film. 

this is barely even scratching the surface of why I think this film deserves all the love it gets and how it is possibly the single most influential shakespeare adaptation... pretty much ever. i’m also a big believer that romeo and juliet (it’s one of my favourite plays and juliet is one of my favourite characters) gets misunderstood because of it’s reputation and that this is the perfect way to make his work accessible and fresh. anyways, if you unlocked a pandora’s box and if i don’t stop now, i probably won’t ever. in short: 90s romeo and juliet supremacy forever.

Different anon fr last name anon - and like you, the missing last names of the pros didn't really register w me either bc as a big DWTS fan I already know them - but I understand and agree w anon's underlying point, that tptb are trying to deemphasize the pros' importance to the show, a BIG mistake imo. The only reason DWTS morphed fr a one-shot summer replacement into a 28 season ratings juggernaut was bc of the starpower charisma of OG pros like Maks, Derek, Julianne, Karina, Mark, Kym, etc.

See, until Cheryl said they were no longer in charge of music selection, I had no idea.  Same with the possibility of costume design, although that is still unknown how much input they still have.  If you were to ask a regular fan, I’m betting they didn’t know pros were in charge of music and wardrobe to begin with.  At this point, the pros are still in charge of teaching their celeb to dance and in charge of their performance each week....and are lucky to have well paying high profile jobs as well as an upcoming tour.  To those that were so insistent that “This is showbiz” who are no so very upset about last names not being used.....I call foul.  You can’t say it’s perfectly acceptable to keep someone tied to a contract then tell them 3 days in advance that they have no job but then say it’s a travesty to take away music selection or dare not list a last name on a show where they are still employed.

DWTS Premier- day after live blog

Since I didn’t watch last night, I promised to give my “Live blog” as I watched today. If you care to read what I thought, feel free. 

Opening number:

Starting with an interview, this is odd. Really, let’s play the Hannah is single from the get go. I love Kel so much! Whoa, that mirrorball opening this was trippy. I love when the pros open the dancing. Oh, Tom and Erin, I’ve missed you! I really hate this lets not say who they are dancing with and make everyone come in by themselves. They should never do that again. This is quite the process to get started. I think I like the set. It’s very shiny.

This judges twist: I’m guessing they get to save a dancer. Que the eye roll.

Hannah: This is the most of the Bachelor/ Bachelorette I’ve ever seen. That was the most unenthusiastic hello ever. Gosh I love Alan so much! She smiles a lot. I don’t like her costume. She was off timing with her arms a few times. Her movements just seem slow and small. The moves she knows, she hits sharply though. Not bad for the first dance. I think they could go on to do well. Let’s not play the showmance and I’ll be good with them staying for a while.

Kel: I freakin love Kel! Always have. Bringing good burger, love it! I love the reaction. I’m also glad she has someone I like again. Sliding down his tongue. I kinda love their costumes. Opps, missed hands twice in a row. So serious faced. Is he chewing gum? That wasn’t great but I still enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to more from them. Stay around long Witney and Kel! He is really listening to the judges. I like that. And man, those gems on Witney’s lips have to be uncomfortable.

Kate: I never watched the office…. Pasha, a new cutie. Nice dimples on him. That was the shortest segment. Weird opening to the dance. She almost forgot to take off her costume. She struggled at the beginning. She seems to be almost slipping around on the floor. She’s did well in some spot, struggled through others. I think she’ll do well as the weeks go on. I love that the judges complimented Pasha too. One thing about costumes, why is she in blue and he’s in red? They just don’t really go…

I just love how everyone keeps mentioning that it’s been a year. Maybe they’ll learn and not do that again.

Lamar: I heard this one was bad… Don’t know him. Nice slow clap Peta. She shoots, she scores! He makes her look so tiny and she’s really not that tiny. Oh boy. I like his costume. Oh, so slow! He arms aren’t bad. Those kicks lol. He’s leg don’t need to be flexible for basketball. I mean, it really wasn’t great but knowing what the scores were, I didn’t think it was that bad. Poor guy looks horrified. Carrie Ann, good for you for being kind and really complimenting him. He did the best with what he could.

Lauren: She’s so sweet and I love her already. I don’t even like country music. But like, why Gleb! Anyone but Gleb! He’s my least favorite male pro. Maybe she’ll take him though. Wow, go girl! She hung right in there with the ladies. She’s acting the part and doing the steps so well too! Weird song for her but it works. That was so short! She did great though! I can’t wait to see more of her. Very well choreographed Gleb.

I saw Kym and MumI!

Christy/ Sailor: Poor Christy! So sad for her but so happy her daughter could replace her. Such a sweet simple meeting. Ah, her excitement over the song. So cute! Aw, Val! He’s so distraught. So amazing that Sailor took over. She’s so beautiful nit like in a normal looking person type way. They are so sweet to each other.  Oh she looks so gorgeopis! Three days and she dances like this! Wow. She’s going to thrive as the season goes on. She’s really jolding her own. And she looks like she is having the time of her life! I love it! I think I’m the most excited for them so far. I loved that she went to her Mom at the beginning of the dance and then the kiss and cry after. Amazing job. Lol, she looks taller than Val. Could just be the hair.

Wow, the worst break the doctor had ever seen. Poor girl! She should have a sling on to hold it elevated!

Karamo: Never watched this show either but I think I want to… just need some time… He just looks like so much fun! I am so glad he got Jenna! They are going to be so fun to watch together, like Jenna and Adam. That was the shortest video again. Kill it you two. Haha, there is the camera mess up. So embarrassing for whoever that was. They are killing this, and they just look so good. He’s having a blast! That was so fun! He did really well too. They could do really well too. Can’t wait to see more of them, without the camera mess up.

And I already want to tell Len to shut up! Remember, they are just learning to dance. How can you expect them to have every piece perfect already! You trained for years so you don’t know how hard this is for them so shut up and stop being so grumpy. Yes, idealistically, the dancers need to be able to do all things but why be so angry week one when the can’t? Ok, end of rant, for now at least. Back to the show.

Ray: He’s handsome and he just looks like a good man. He looks so happy to see Cheryl. It’s so sweet.  I always have mixed feelings when she comes back but I’m glad she did. Um. Nice little solo there. Those facials were creepy. He danced better on his own but he’s hanging in there. Stand up a little more Ray. Ok, yea, that was kind of creepy but that may have been thanks to the song… Not my favorite but not horrible. He seemed to be having so much fun. Good for him.

Mary: She’s beautiful! 75  and a half… I love it! What a personality. She is so sassy and she’s gonna be so fun! I love how he said, “you got some good rhythm” and she just goes “I’m black” lol. Brandon, love you too. We get to see so much of personality in the video. He’s leading her so well and she looks so elegant. She’s moving well. He arms could be a bit sharper bit She did well. They are so fun. Carrie Ann is being so sweet, and Len can’t stand it. Lol, Len saying they are the same age and she asks him if he’s 75 and a half and he’s just speechless!

Ally: She’s so tiny. There was no doubt she’d get Sasha (eye roll) Love her brutal honesty about not being flexible. Where was the package. Nice solo to start but that was girl group dance moves. She has a lot of energy, but Sasha brings that out in all of his partners. I’m not even sure what this dance is supposed to be. Oh, she missed timing and spacing towards the end there. Sasha’s fighting Len already. Len, I actually agree with you for once tonight. More like a Beyoncé dance, not ballroom. No real connect to them at all for me. Sasha has a pink snakeskin jacket, lol

Sean: I have no feeling about him other than I wish he would have got someone else besides Lindsay because I just love her so much and I don’t want her to go out early like I expect him to. Not sure who I would want him to have otherwise. Maybe Cheryl (sorry Cheryl). Having trump say to vote for you probably isn’t going to help him… pre preschool level dancer lol, oh Linds. That shirt is just awful! He really is bad! He put effort in. This is kind of scary! I still love you anyway Lindsay. At least he seems like he had fun. Bruno couldn’t even talk about the dance. He was stuck on the bongo playing. I really don’t need him to go on past next week. Best comment from Carrie Ann “You were off beat most of the dance” love it!

I love that no one has to go up those awful steps after their dance for interviews. So much better. And maybe we’ll get cool videos from the pros and stars from there.

James: Yes for brunette Emma! I hope she keeps her hair brunette. It breaks up all the blonde. I have no clue who he is either but he’s handsome. Oh my gosh, his kids are so adorable! All those blonde curls. Emma’s reaction is priceless. They are going to be a fun partnership too. Um, best solo part of the night. She looks gorgeous! Strong frame James. Sharna said that he reminds her of her James, and I agree. She just looks almost like a natural. Wow! That was just awesome. He’s definitely a front runner.

Overall, it was a good premiere. I still miss Sharna and Artem. I miss seeing their beautiful faces. I’m happy the good band is back. One of the band members has Sharna’s hair…I like the new ballroom layout. They are going to be a fun cast. I think Sean might go home at the end of next week but maybe Lamar. I’m ok with either.

Last night, I attended a special screening of “Us” with Writer/Producer/Director Jordan Peele. The screening took place at the Motion Picture Academy’s state-of-the-art screening facility Linwood Dunn Theater At Mary Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study. I would like to point out that the theater was named in honor of visual effects pioneer Linwood Dunn. Following the screening, I spoke with Jordan. “Us” is Jordan’s second feature film. I’ve met Jordan a number times before and this is the first time I’ve seen this movie.

After the film, he spoke about the process of making this motion picture. The film took about 42 days to shoot which is twice as long as his first movie “Get Out”. The reason for the longer shoot time was having child actors on the set. I’ve worked with child actors on a number of my productions and there are restrictions to protect the children. The largest restriction is the amount of time the children are on the set.

Jordan talked about is horror film influences on making this film. It was the Master storyteller Alfred Hitchcock that started this story’s influences. Jordan referred to Hitchcock’s storytelling “The Birds” and “Vertigo” and the way he used the coastline in the settings. Jordan mentions that there was a fun little throwaway line in the flashback of the film says, “...they’re shooting a movie on the Pair”, is a subtle hint that they could have been shooting “The Lost Boys”, which was also shot at the same location of Santa Cruz, California during that time period.

He also spoke about the collaboration between other departments such as a Cinematographer Mike Gioulakis, Costume Designer Kym Barrett, Production Designer Ruth De Jong, and Composer Michael Abels. With Mike, if Jordan was able to give him the time needed to set up a shot, that every frame could be a picture (and a picture tells a thousand stories).  As with Kym, the discussion lead to Red Jump Suits for the Doppelgängers because that is what every 80′s Horror Villian wore and the one glove is a through back to Michael Jackson and Freddy Krueger who each wore one glove. The discussion with Ruth was about creating an underground society and what it would look like.

During credits, there’s a “Special Thanks” section to thank people who contributed to the film were sister the filmmaker. On this film, there were two names that popped out at me and made me wonder about their input to this film. The first was Cindy Williams and the other is Paul Thomas Anderson. I asked Jordan about the “Special Thanks” credits. He laughed and said, “Not that Cindy Williams.” In reference to the actress. The credit was for his mother Lucinda “Cindy” Williams. As for Writer/Producer/Director, ‘PTA’ as he’s famously known as in certain Hollywood circles, he saw an early cut of the film and gave his input and suggestions about the film to Jordan.

I had met Paul Thomas Andersen at a previous private screening of Paramount’s “A Quiet Place”. PTA’s contribution and support of other filmmakers and the Entertainment Industry may be low key, but it is undeniable. My personal experience working in Hollywood, I find it to be a remarkably small community of the filmmakers. Dancing With The Stars Performance November 9, 2009

It's distinct that during Season nine of Dancing with the Stars, which begins on Sept. 21, the use of Twitter and Facebook by the show's dancers has currently improved the way its 20 million fans get their info. find and Dancing with the Stars pro, Karina Smirnoff pulled in the highest rating of the night. It tends to make me truly happy to know that individuals are that interested in sitting down and listening to what I have to show them. It makes me happy to know that people really appreciate my music and enjoy the work I put into it all. Watch them encounter some of the hardest dances however, and make sure you solid your vote following tonight's show. Karina Smirnoff is usually a enjoyment to watch on the dance flooring. There is no denying that she is one of the very best pros in the bunch. Nevertheless, placing up with the daggers she throws the judges and the viewers when things don't go her way is just too much to ask. Macy Grey. Sweet mercy that voice is back. Let's hope for an early exit, or for her to wear one of those attire advertising her new album like she did on MTV's VMAs that 1 year.

Nonsense completed, the cast of Broadway's The Lion King stormed the ballroom with an amazing spectacle. And if we go strictly for just black and white check on Buck then it becomes a little interesting because there are only two instances - the 'did he get to see his son' scene in Brawl in cell block 911 and the black and white check jacket in wrapped in Red - when Eddie leaves the 118 - which is now making me suspicious that this scene will connect into the Diaz boys somehow and play on the idea of Buck being separated from them in some way - so now I'm even more 👀👀👀👀👀👀 about the whole thing - especially if it plays out in parallel to 3x01 - with the scene either coming at the end of 6x05 or the beginning of 6x06 - and it setting up the HenRen disaster before leading back into the sperm donor storyline - the opposite if what we saw in 3x01 -where Buck was the one who ended up in a disaster while HenRen we're in their sperm donor storyline!!

This is the portion of the review where I share why I find this to be complete and utter bullshit: Number one, Meryl is/was an ice dancer and competed her entire life with not only a male partner, but the same male partner. Big difference. Next! Number 2. Kristi yes, did compete as a singles skater as well and yes, is only a mere 2 years younger than Nancy. HOWEVER. THE KEY FACTOR HERE IS THAT KRISTI COMPETED ON SEASON 6 OF THIS STUPID SHOW. IN 2008. NINE DAMN YEARS AGO. If my math is correct (which is probably isn’t) she won when she was around 34 years old. Nancy is 45. AGE IS A FACTOR. IT ISN’T AGEISM, IT’S FACT. GIVE THE WOMAN A BREAK. I thought she looked nervous as hell, but really lovely. I think now that she’s got the jitters out, she’ll only go up.

Overall it was alright. It felt a little too Magic Mike for me. He’s stiff and he was off count almost the entire time, which I basically already assumed he would be. He’ll never be great but he looks like Jackson Rathbone and I like how Sharna calls him “Bonnah,” so if they quit with the forced gimmick and just let shit happen naturally I’d probably be the captain of this goddamn ship.  Next.

I’m going to quickly say that it’s horse shit that Heather got the same score as him. BUT STICK WITH ME FOR A MINUTE. I was blown away in the best sense of the word. I had no clue who the hell this man is because the only thing I know about baseball is Mike Lawson and Ginny Baker (#Bawson WADDUP FAM) so I went in 100% blank and I really truly did enjoy this performance. I like his partnership with Lindsay, I love his attitude, and to top it all off he actually appears to be somewhat capable. I’m for it and look forward to more. YES.

Again, I thought she was lowballed.
