okokok so I am not one to read plays that aren’t classics and I mean that. If it isn’t something that is written by the likes of Shakespeare or Arthur Miller, it does not spark my interest.
THAT BEING SAID
I IMPLORE YOU TO READ ‘Spacebar: A Broadway Play By Kyle Sugarman’ by Michael Mitnick.
It is different and a little weird and frankly, unconventional, but when you finish it, I promise you will have no regrets because you will want to reread what you just consumed and pick it apart and fall in love with the tiny moments of grief, and loss, and love and humour that we all relate to in this crazy thing called life.
Just look it up to read it. I found a free copy of it somewhere on the web.
So yeah. Read ‘Spacebar’; and when you finish, talk to me about it.

Disney Publishing Worldwide and Disney|ABC Television Group (DATG) announces a program to give books to children in need. They teamed up with First Book in this Fifth Annual Magic of Storytelling campaign. The event runs through March 31, 2017, with the goal of donating one million books.
The object behind the Magic of Storytelling campaign is to arouse imagination of all family members. First Book is a non-profit enterprise founded in 1992. This organization seeks to nurture children’s the love of reading and deliver books to under-served communities in the United States.
Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media executive vice-president of content and media, Andrew Sugarman exclaimed,
We are thrilled to be part of a program that encourages a love of reading and makes these stories available to as many people as possible. We’re honored to continue our work with First Book.
In addition to Disney’s one million pledged books, all ABC-owned affiliates have committed to donate 5,000 books to their respective communities. President and CEO of First Book, Kyle Zimmer said,
Each year, the excitement around the…campaign grows, inspiring millions of individuals to help us bring much-needed new books to children in need.
Help Donate Books
DATG and First Book are offering simple methods of donating materials to transform children’s lives and improve their educational experience. Disney will donate a book to the non-profit when consumers do one of the following:
One for One Book Donation: For every eligible Disney book purchased, DATG will donate one. Book titles and participating retailers can be found on the Magic of Storytelling website.
Share a Shelfie: A “shelfie” is a selfie taken holding a favorite book or in front of a bookshelf. Post the photo on Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #MagicOfStorytelling, and DATG will donate a book for each image shared.
Disney Store Central: (1) Download one digital book, which was designed for adults to read to children. (2) Each time a book is read in the Disney Story Central App one will be donated.
Magic of Storytelling Sweepstakes: People can enter to win 400 Disney books, which could be donated to their local school. One entry will equal one book given.
The best way to prevent illiteracy is offer fun and exciting reading programs that include children and their guardians. When under-served schools and programs do not have the resources needed to teach kids the love of reading, the result is a higher ratio of illiterate students.
First Book Supports Educational Equity
In the past 24 years, First Book has delivered over 160 million books and educational materials to schools and programs which serve low-income families. There are over 300,000 members throughout Canada and the United States, which is made up of educators, program leaders, librarians, and others helping children.
The members are part of “the largest and fastest growing network of educators exclusively serving kids in need,” according to their website. First Book harnesses the energy of these members to serve nearly nine million or approximately 20 percent of needy children.
The Magic of Storytelling Campaign Is Celebrated Across Disney’s Media Platforms
On Disney’s MagicOfStorytelling website, the campaign “comes to life.” The site is offering resources and activities to promote reading and shared reading opportunities, such as the Disney Reads Activity Kit. This colorful PDF is packed with 19 colorful pages of fun. Some of the engaging opportunities included are:
Read ‘n’ Bingo!: The combination of reading and B*I*N*G*O makes the task of sharing a book exciting. Included are five printable bingo cards, which have squares like, B-2 “I heard the word: Know,” or N-4 “I heard a word that rhymes with: Pink.”
Imagine a Story: This activity encourages kids to develop and write their own stories. On page one, there are three sections, each offering three cards. In order to create the story, children pick a character, the setting, and an event. Once selected, they can write their story on pages designed bolster deeper thinking, such as the page “What Will Happen Next?”
Tic-Tac-Read: The typical nine-square tic-tac-toe board has phrases to spur a conversation about a story just shared with two kids. They answer the questions and mark off the boxes to win!
Think about it! helps kids express themselves by writing in thought balloons. “I’m thinking” and “I’m understanding,” are two of the four topics.
A “Reading Award” certificate, four printable bookmarks, a couple of Word Search puzzles, and two more pages encouraging writing skills are included.
‘Walt Disney once said, “There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island.”‘ The booklet suggests readers engage in the magic of books by using a few simple techniques to delve deeper into the story.
The narrator’s approach might be to encourage discussion while reading, pause in the middle of a sentence and have the child finish the end, act out difficult words, or help the kids choose an alternate ending by asking, “what if” questions.
While Disney is asking its consumers to help donate a million books, their overall message is to “have fun and communicate with one another as you adventure through the magic of storytelling.”

50 Hot Takes for the Philadelphia Sports Fan: Part Four
Yeah man.
You know what time it is.
It’s time for the hottest takes in the Delaware Valley, and I’ve gotta be honest with you – these stories have been doing a lot better than I thought they would. If something ain’t broke, then it doesn’t need fixing, as Bert Lance once said. That’s why I’ve decided to come up with 50 more hot takes for you, the Philadelphia sports fan, since parts one, two, and three obviously were not enough.
Before we begin, I’d like to share a part of a recent email from a Crossing Broad reader, an email which served as the inspiration for this story:
It was an uplifting message for me, and with the resulting energy and motivation I came up another list of takes for y’all:
The Allen Iverson/Tyronn Lue stepover is the most overrated sequence in all of Philly sports. The Sixers went on to lose that series 4-1, yet here we are celebrating that moment like it was the Brandon Graham strip sack.
If given a choice between Taco Bell and Chipotle, I’m eating at Taco Bell.
The hatred for “chain restaurants” is misguided. If you’re suburban white trash, like me, you find comfort and familiarity in spots like Olive Garden or the Texas Roadhouse simply because you grew up absent of independent and unique restaurants.
103.7 in South Jersey plays better music than WMMR.
Old Town Road is a horrible song.
All millennials and Generation Z members should have their bank accounts frozen and assets seized until they have seen the following movies: Half Baked, Black Sheep, Happy Gilmore, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
“They” say that the millennial generation includes anybody who was born after 1980, which is technically true, but also off-base. If you were born before 1985, you have so much more in common with Generation X. You probably didn’t have a cell phone until college, you actually called your friends on a landline and said hello to their parents, and you entered the work force right before the economy went to shit. Most millennials, as stereotyped by others, were graduating college and high school during the recession, which impacted their ability to find jobs and affordable living. Older millennials like myself were lucky to have just missed that.
The “celebrity” scene at Philly sporting events is totally lame. It’s typically M Night Shyamalan, a shitty local rapper, and then 3-5 current or former Philly athletes.
I don’t trust people who dislike dogs. How could anybody possibly dislike dogs?
If you bring your dog to the dog park, you can’t just stare at your phone the entire time. You have to spend at least five seconds paying attention. Try to notice when your pooch takes a huge dump right in front of you.
People who throw trash out of their window while driving are the biggest scumbags on the planet.
“Price point” is an annoying term. You can just say “price” and it means virtually the same thing. It’s generally understood that prices change based on market fluctuations and typical bargaining.
Nobody gives a fuck about your fantasy football team.
Furthermore, if you’re watching the Eagles game with friends and family, don’t talk about your fantasy football team. Only talk about the Birds.
99 times out of 100, the person who cuts you off at the South Philly sports complex is a middle-aged white guy, 10 year old son in the passenger seat of his oversized gas guzzler of a truck, and he feels like he’s entitled to just jump in line wherever he wants. These people are total assholes.
If given a choice between Natty Lite and an IPA, I’m choosing Natty Lite.
If I’m forced to drink an IPA, I guess I’m going with the New England variety. West Coast IPA tastes like hoppy pinecone butthole.
The best brewery in our region is Hidden Sands, down in Egg Harbor Township. Excellent variety, great taproom, lots of interesting tastes with frequent rotation on the menu.
The second best brewery in our region is Evil Genius, for a lot of the reasons I listed above.
The most overrated brewery in our region is Tired Hands.
“Party school” rankings are dumb. Most big state schools have a party scene. What nobody ever talks about is substance abuse at high-ranking academic institutions, where the stress to perform relative to your peers results in people just drinking themselves into oblivion with regularity.
I like NBC Sports Philadelphia’s new studio. Maybe the anchor desk could be bigger.
Some people didn’t “get” my Jersey Shore column. It wasn’t an anti-shore column; I was telling people to take the occasional weekend and go somewhere else, see something different.
Y’all always say “who cares about Skip Bayless?” but click on those stories whenever we write them.
One of my biggest professional failures was being rejected for a Q/A story with Joe Cordell, of Cordell and Cordell. I exchanged some emails with his PR guy but was unable to get Joe on the phone.
Philadelphia doesn’t need any more bars or restaurants. Or snooty pizza places.
There are a lot of poorly run city agencies, but the Department of Revenue is the worst. It takes four weeks for any payment to clear, the web portal doesn’t work, and nobody on the phone has any idea what they’re doing.
I’d rather eat at Donkey’s than any cheesesteak place in the city.
A hot dog is not a sandwich because the bun is comprised of one piece of bread. If a hot dog bun was sliced into two halves, then it would be a sandwich.
“Is a hot dog a sandwich?” may be the dumbest debate ever.
Dunkin Donuts is better than Starbucks. Starbucks blows.
I can’t get down with the boat shoes and no socks look.
I kind of want to unionize Crossing Broad employees, just to see how Kyle responds.
It’s pointless to respond to a post or tweet with “nobody cares.” If you don’t care, then don’t respond.
Penn State fans should run James Franklin out of town. He doesn’t have what it takes to get you guys to the college football playoff.
People need to stop painting Penn State fans and alumni as Sandusky enablers or “pedos” or “cultists” or whatever. Yes, there was a portion of the community that seemed to handle the scandal poorly, but the vast majority of PSU people I know approached that topic with the required discretion and seriousness.
I hope Manny Diaz goes 0-12 this year and gets fired. I understand that the Miami situation was unexpected, and that his dream job opened up under unique circumstances, but he made a commitment to Temple and he should have kept his commitment.
When Josh Harris and David Blitzer sell their stake in Crystal Palace, they should purchase the Philadelphia Union from Jay Sugarman. Whatever $$$ amount it takes. Adding the Union to the Sixers/Devils/Blue Coats/Prudential Center portfolio would make a lot of sense geographically and from a growth potential standpoint.
Do you ever notice how sports radio callers are either incredibly stupid or incredibly smart? There never seems to a be a middle ground; they either make really good points or totally horrendous points.
Regarding the above, I feel like the smartest radio callers are dialing up Glen and Ray on the weekends, or queuing up for the Sixers post game show with Devon on 97.5.
People on Twitter talked a ton of shit about the Fanatic’s “Fantasy Fest,” which took place in August, but I think it’s a good idea. I’ve never actually been there, but what’s wrong with putting together an event where all of the radio personalities and listeners can get together? Just seems like a big party atmosphere to me. Shrug.
Changing poop diapers isn’t a big deal at all. The baby is only eating breast milk and formula, so the poop is consistent and sterile, or at least that’s what the pediatrician said.
Having a designated hitter in one league but not the other is laughably stupid. Baseball has some of the worst rules on the planet, but “baseball is fine” according to you curmudgeons.
The Yankees forcing their players to shave is incredibly corny. If they drafted me I’d refuse to play for them for that reason alone, then grow my beard like Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill out of spite.
If you don’t like soccer, just say you don’t like it. You don’t have to bend over backwards explaining why it’s a “communist” sport or “un-American” or for “liberal hipster pussies” or whatever.
Street hockey is underrated as a neighborhood game for kids. You just need sticks and a ball, then use backpacks or other items for the goalposts or buy a cheap pop-up net.
The Wells Fargo Center upgrades were badly needed. It feels like a 25 year old building with 75 years of use.
Temple needs to get out of the Linc and go somewhere else. Anywhere else.
College Gameday on Independence Mall was one of the most underrated Philly sports moments of all time. It brought a tear to my eye. A tear of joy.
David Lee Roth people need to get the fuck over themselves. Both Van Halen and Van Hagar dropped great music for us to listen to. Life is way too short to sit here complaining about Sammy’s time in the band.
Thank you for reading.
Sincerely,
-Kinker

So, re: this post, has your American Girl doll Jesse finally satisfied your urge to have a Jesse you can hug and cuddle?
Also, I think I’ve seen you mention a different Jesse doll you own on this blog before, although I could be mistaken…if that’s true, how many Jesses do you have? And may I see pictures of them?
(Also also I am OBSESSED with the crocheted Kyle J. Sugarman in the linked post…homemade one-of-a-kind dolls of a person’s favorite things my BELOVED—and I, too, just love having physical representations of your favorite characters whom you can cuddle and hug 🥲)
it really has satisfied that urge :') its so hard to explain but just being able to wrap both arms around him and hug makes me feel so happy and at peace. hyperfixations for me often involve a huge amount of energy and fixation that can be really difficult to articulate or "get out", especially when i dont have time to make or talk about stuff, so hugging and squeezing a physical representation of it helps "get" some of that energy "out" and gives me that same rush.
and yes, i have another jesse doll 😔 hes cute but not super accurate and not as easy to hug. i also, embarrassingly enough, have a kyle sugarman american girl doll, but he lives back home in my closet storage so i just keep my crocheted one with me always. ive had him for like five years now and never sleep without him. here's some pics of my four dolls 😔

HUFFPOLLSTER: Support For Harsher Immigration Policies Is Dropping, Survey Finds
The majority of Americans doesn’t want to see mass deportations. Most of President Trump’s opponents don’t understand why anyone approves of him. And the new GOP health care bill is off to a rocky start in gaining public support. This is HuffPollster for Friday, March 17, 2017.
AMERICANS BREAK WITH TRUMP ON IMMIGRATION - Tal Kopan and Jennifer Agiesta: “Americans disagree with President Donald Trump’s immigration priorities, according to a new CNN/ORC poll, with nearly two-thirds of Americans saying they’d like to see a path to legal status for undocumented immigrants rather than deportations. Trump has made tough border security and strict enforcement of US immigration laws a focal point of his campaign and presidency ― using some of his first executive orders to pave the way for far more deportations and detentions as well as ordering the construction of a Southern border wall. But a CNN/ORC poll released Friday finds that the public is actually moving in the opposite direction since Trump has won election. All told, 60% say the government’s top priority in dealing with illegal immigration should be developing a plan to allow those in the US illegally who have jobs to become legal residents….The number who prioritize legal status for those working in the US illegally is up from 51% who said so last fall. That shift comes across party lines, with Democrats and independents each 10 points more likely and Republicans 8 points more likely to choose a plan for legal status now compared with last fall.” [CNN]
MANY AMERICANS CAN’T UNDERSTAND WHAT THEIR POLITICAL OPPONENTS ARE THINKING  - HuffPollster: “Nearly half of Americans have already gotten into a political argument this year, a new HuffPost/YouGov survey finds….While 48 percent of Americans who personally approve of [President] Trump’s job performance say they understand why someone would disapprove of him, 43 percent say they can’t understand that, the poll finds. Trump’s opponents are even more vehement, with two-thirds of those who disapprove saying they can’t understand why anyone would approve of him, and just 23 percent that they can understand his supporters….People generally say their closest circle mostly shares their views of the president: 60 percent of those who approve of Trump’s job performance say most or all of their family and close friends also approve, while 76 percent of those who disapprove of the president say that opinion is shared by most or all of their friends and family.” [HuffPost]
MOST POLLS SHOW LITTLE SUPPORT FOR GOP HEALTH CARE PLAN - HuffPollster: “Republican plans to repeal the Affordable Care Act have been met with a largely frosty reception by the public, according to the latest polling released this week. A Fox News poll published Wednesday night finds that just 34 percent of registered voters support the GOP’s health care plan, with 54 percent in opposition ― 36 percent oppose because it makes too many changes to the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, and 11 percent because it makes too few. A SurveyMonkey poll shows similar reactions, with most Americans opposed to the Republican bill, 55 percent to 42 percent. The poll finds more intense opposition than support, with just 18 percent saying they strongly support the bill, while 38 percent say that they’re strongly opposed to it. The Democratic firm Public Policy Polling, meanwhile, puts opposition at 49 percent, with just 24 percent approving. A fourth poll from Morning Consult and Politico, released Wednesday, finds considerably more positive views of the bill, with 46 percent of voters approving and 35 percent disapproving. (Perhaps relevantly, theirs was also the only survey not to explicitly identify the bill as being a Republican proposal.)...Most of the surveys find significant splits across party lines.” [HuffPost, more from Fox, SurveyMonkey, PPP (D) and Morning Consult/Politico]
Many expect the plan to make things worse - Ashley Kirzinger, Liz Hamel, Elise Sugarman, Bryan Wu and Mollyann Brodie: “About half (48 percent) the public thinks the Republican replacement plan will decrease the number of people who have health insurance, while one in five (18 percent) say the number of insured people will increase and three in ten say it will stay about the same….When it comes to costs, about half (48 percent) expect the new plan to increase costs for people who buy insurance on their own, while about a quarter each say costs for these people will decrease (23 percent) or stay about the same (25 percent)....However, the public does not see a distinction in how the replacement plan would impact costs for these different groups of individuals, except when it comes to income. About four in ten Americans expect costs to increase for younger, older, urban-dwelling, and rural-dwelling people buying insurance on the individual market, while between about two in ten and one quarter expect them to decrease.” [Kaiser Family Foundation]
TRUMP’S TWEETS ARE RATED MUCH WORSE THAN TWEETS FROM HIS AIDES - HuffPollster: “Tweets from President Donald Trump’s account that are registered as being sent from from an Android ― generally a sign that the president wrote them himself ― get significantly worse scores from the public than the more innocuous tweets sent from an iPhone (presumably written by his staff)....The YouGov TweetIndex catalogues Trump’s tweets and has a representative public sample rate for each of them….The Huffington Post collected the data and separated it by whether the tweet came from Trump’s Android or an iPhone. When the tweet came from an iPhone, it scored an average of 8 points in YouGov’s TweetIndex….However, tweets that came from Trump’s Android received an average score of -21 points, 29 points worse than those presumably sent by his staff.” [HuffPost, TweetIndex]
VIEWS ON PAYING COLLEGE ATHLETES DIVIDE ALONG RACIAL LINES - Travis Waldron: “As the men’s and women’s NCAA tournaments kick off this week, a majority of Americans who have any opinion on the subject are still opposed to paying college athletes, according to a new HuffPost/YouGov poll. The survey found that 37 percent of Americans strongly or somewhat oppose paying college athletes ― beyond their scholarships, that is ― while 30 percent strongly or somewhat support the idea. The remaining third aren’t sure. But dig a little deeper, and an interesting picture emerges: White and black Americans are sharply divided on the issue. A majority ― 52 percent ― of black respondents are strongly or somewhat in favor of paying college athletes, while only 15 percent strongly or somewhat oppose the idea. Among whites, however, the numbers flip: Just 27 percent support paying those athletes, while 43 percent oppose it.” [HuffPost]
MOST AGREE THAT TRUMP’S TIES TO RUSSIA SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED - Dana Blanton: “Majorities of voters think Congress should investigate if Russia interfered with the election and allegations of coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia. That’s according to the latest Fox News Poll, taken amidst a new volley of allegations of ties between Trump and Russia, and wiretapping of Trump Tower. Sixty-six percent want a Congressional investigation into Russia’s attempts to influence the election, and 63 percent want lawmakers to look into possible connections between the Trump campaign and Russia. Voters are split 46-49 percent over whether lawmakers should investigate the wiretapping allegation. Views are clear on whether the president should produce evidence of his claim about the wiretaps:  76 percent think he should.  That isn’t just Democrats, although most agree (88 percent).  Republicans (63 percent) and independents (70 percent) also think he should show proof.” [Fox]
