South African actor Franci Swanepoel 50 has died

In line with stories, Swanepoel died in her sleep and was discovered on Sunday morning. A reason for demise has not but been made public. What a wonderful privilege and fun talk I had with Fanie Cronje on his program Boeke, Skrywers, Digters en Dinge on Ramkat Radio and Ramkat Tv (Kyknet). Thank you Fanie for your wonderful review on my book Bloed en Modder. It is such a honour to hear just how much people enjoyed reading my work. As promised, I will advise as soon as the next book is launched. Thank you for the chat and the relaxing way you not only spoke about my Afrikaans book Bloed en Modder but we also had the opportunity to talk about my English book launched in May 2022, Enough. This gives me hope in my fight for women and all victims of this terrible crime. Domestic Violence and Sexual abuse are so easily rubbed under the carpets, and it will take much more than only my fight to bring an end to this total destruction of human lives with absolutely no punishment. Again, thank you and I wish your station and Tv program the best of success.

Maak My Famous is a talent search competition with acts ranging from dancers and rappers to opera singers airing on KykNET (DStv channel 144) and kykNET&kie (DStv channel 145).

South Africa’s Emo Adams and his co-presenter Tarryn Lamb, both very successful Afrikaans musicians, will be back with Maak My Famous to introduce the 48 talented performers for a second season.

“We brought so many new and exciting elements to the second season. We introduced a new category for the groups and rappers and they are insanely good! And off course the Emo ticket is back. Do I use all of them? You have to wait and see!” said Adams, who is also the producer of the show.

The second season of the reality show was in production at GrandWest Casino in Cape Town and will be broadcast on kykNET and kykNET&kie from 29 April 2020. Live tapings of the second season have been postponed to continue from 14 April, following the Covid-19 national lockdown.

The winner of Maak my Famous will receive a cash prize of R100 000, a car sponsored by Toyota, a contract by All-Star Management and a tour with Emo Adams for a year.

According to KykNET, the first season of Maak my Famous was a runaway hit with about 1.4 million viewers voting to secure the top 2 talents in the competition.

In 1977 Television was finally introduced to South Africa. We had 2 channels which only ran until 6pm at night. Because television was a new thing and my country had no shows of their own, they purchased some shows to dub into Afrikaans as there were no animated children’s shows in Afrikaans at all. One of these shows was ‘Heidi’

The South African version of Heidi has a unique intro song completely different to other country’s dubs based on an already popular song sung in German by Carike Keuzenkamp.

Heidi has never stopped running on South African television, these days playing on Kyknet, the tv channel reserved for Afrikaans speaking programming. It is considered a staple of Afrikaans culture.

Most Afrikaans speaking South Africans will actually fight you if you try and tell them it’s a Japanese show. >.>

I own all 52 episodes on DVD with the Afrikaans dub.

The show was dubbed into english in the late 70s for the Philippines and in 2001 for India. No English version has ever been released for sale and there are no official english subtitles ever released (although you can find the show unofficially subtitled on Kissanime)

The show was so popular when it first aired it launched the ‘World Masterpiece Theater’ series of anime which included series like ‘Anne of the Green Gables’, ‘Little Women’ ‘Belle and Sebastian’, ‘A dog of Flanders’ etc etc. Takahata and Miyazaki worked on several of the shows in the series. The series of shows ran from 1979 until 1997 and was revived from 2007 until 2009.
