Harold O’Neal
Harold Mujahid O'Neal FRSA (born March 27, 1981) is an American composer, pianist, actor, dancer, and public speaker. He has recorded and performed with artists in a variety of musical genres (U2, Lupe Fiasco, Busta Rhymes, Damien Rice, Aloe Blacc, and Jay Z). O'Neal has been compared to Duke Ellington and Maurice Ravel by The New York Times and is considered to be of this generation's greatest pianists and composers. In 2019, he was inducted into the Royal Society of the Arts with the Patron being Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Career
Harold O'Neal was born in Arusha, Tanzania, and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. His great-grandfather, Ollie Harold Pennington, was a jazz pianist and composer for silent film in Kansas City, where his grandmother walked to school with Charlie Parker. Harold began playing the piano by ear at age 4 on his father's miniature keyboard. He found his earliest inspirations in the music of Tom and Jerry, Looney Tunes, and Disney. While growing up, his family had a tradition of playing games together to find the distinct rhythms of songs. Having spent much of his youth living in the projects (Public Housing) and surviving near-death experiences, he credits music with saving his life.
O'Neal attended the Paseo Academy Of Fine And Performing Arts, with classmates Logan Richardson, Lil' Ronnie, and Brian Kennedy, where he began his jazz piano studies while being mentored by Ahmad Alaadeen. He studied classical piano and composition with Margie Cameron-Jarrett, whose musical lineage can be traced back to Franz Liszt. He began working with musical luminaries from a young age — touring the world with Bobby Watson when he was 19 after studying composition at the Berklee College Of Music. He then went on to study at the Manhattan School of Music. It was there where Harold met the great American jazz pianist and composer, Andrew Hill, with whom he soon became the apprentice of. Mr. Hill was an apprentice of prolific composer Paul Hindemith. Following Andrew Hill's advice, O'Neal left the Manhattan School of Music to replace pianist Jason Moran in the influential band, the Greg Osby 4, making his major-label debut recording for Blue Note Records at the age of 21. In 2004, O'Neal premiered a jazz quartet featuring Greg Osby, Jeff "Tain" Watts, and Matt Brewer.
In the following years, O'Neal released a number of albums including "Charlie's Suite" (2006), which was a compilation of his family's legacy, "Whirling Mantis" (2010) with a jazz quartet and a solo piano album "Marvelous Fantasy" (2011) on Smalls Records. He then partnered with Ski Beats and Damon Dash, after being signed to Universal Music Group as a songwriter and producer, to release the albums 24 Hour Karate School 2 (2011), Twilight (2012) and Cam'Ron And Vado's Blu Tops (2012). In 2012, O'Neal formed a partnership with producers Lil Ronnie and Jerry Wonda working with many Pop and R&B artists (Miguel, Akon, Melissa Ethridge, Raphael Saadiq, French Montana). In 2013, he released the album "Man On The Street" featuring a jazz quartet as well as solo piano for Universal. O'Neal worked as an additional composer on the 2015 Disney film Tomorrowland with Anthony Giacchino, which starred George Clooney and Britt Robertson. The film was directed by Brad Bird with the bulk of the film-score being composed by Michael Giacchino. His solo piano album "Piano Cinema" was released in May 2018, with "Sam and Sam" serving as the lead single. Following the album release, O'Neal completed a spring tour across the U.S. with The Blk Shp with Pixar as a partner.

The ceremony featured bassist Christian McBride and pianist Harold O’Neal as guest star performers, each musically representing the electric and acoustic side of Herbie's legacy.

In 2009, O'Neal appeared as an actor in Jay Z's music video for the hit record Young Forever, from his multi-platinum album The Blueprint 3. In 2010, he was cast in the HBO television series Boardwalk Empire, portraying James P. Johnson. He was also featured in MTV's Sucker Free as a principal dancer.

Salzburg is getting better after leaving Hee-chan Hwang… 1st in the UCL in their own points record 먹튀검증

Even after the Red Bull Salzburg transferred major strikers such as Hwang Hee-chan once, they are finding new prospects and succeeding.
Salzburg defeated Sturmgraz 4-1 in the 12th round of the 2021-2022 Austrian Bundesliga at Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria on the 25th (Korean time).
Salzburg set the record for Bundesliga points in the 12th round. With 34 points from 11 wins and 1 draw, the record is the best in league history. With 31 points and 7 runs, he recorded both the most and the least goals, continuing his overwhelming appearance on both sides of the offensive line.
The power doesn't stop in the well. They are also taking the lead in Group G in the European Football Confederation Champions League (UCL), which was held until the third round on the 21st. Although there is no absolute leader, Salzburg took the lead with 2 wins and 1 draw with all big league teams such as Sevilla of Spain, Lille of France and Wolfsburg of Germany under their feet.
Salzburg's proud prospect, striker Karim Adeyemi, also scored two more goals against Sturmgraz and continued his lead in scoring. He has 10 goals and 1 assist in the league. In the UCL, he also scored four goals in three matches, and the scoring per game in both competitions exceeded 1.0.
Adeyemi is a 19-year-old promising striker with agile dribbling, penetration and scoring ability. His striker had already made his debut for the poor German national team, scoring his first goal last September.
Salzburg, which has successfully undergone a generational change, has nine players under the age of 23 among the starting players (who have played more than half of the Bundesliga games so far). In addition to Adeyemi, attacking partners Noah Okapo, midfielders Nicholas Seifalt, Luka Suu Kyi and others stand out. Among the players with little time to play, 18-year-old Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesco scored three league goals and one UCL goal, and his outstanding potential is also recognized.
The outstanding leadership of coach Matthias Jacel, who is only 33 years old, is also highly regarded. After joining the Salzburg youth team in 2019, he was promoted internally and took the first team battalion starting this season.

(Reuters) - Rapper Lil Nas X will perform in a virtual concert and debut a new music video on Roblox this weekend, in the first such venture for the hugely popular kids gaming platform.
Roblox said on Tuesday it would partner with Columbia Records to bring the 'Old Town Road' singer to its millions of users for three free live virtual concerts, as video games become a popular means for artists to promote their music when coronavirus curbs have barred big gatherings.
Epic Games, the makers of Fortnite, held a three-week-long concert series in the game's party royale island in September, while Roblox hosted an album launch party for popstar Ava Max in the same month.

2019 Myanmar New Music

The ‘Girl Power’ revolution came late to Myanmar, the audience wasn’t ready when it arrived and by the time the country was prepared to embrace it, it was over.
It began when a Burmese man and an Australian woman crossed paths in Yangon eight years ago and quickly recognised a shared musical passion: Moe Kyaw was a music producer with a few local successes under his belt; Nicole May a dance teacher flitting about the city and doing volunteer work. It wasn’t long before they were business partners.
Fifteen years had passed since a casting call in central London first brought together the Spice Girls, giving birth to the original ‘Girl Power’ crusade, which turned out to be the biggest musical juggernaut of that decade, inspiring a legion of copycat acts across the world. Now it was Myanmar’s turn.
Nearly 200 women showed up for the audition staged by May and Kyaw in early 2010; by day’s end, there were five remaining. That week, Ah Moon, Htike Htike, Cha Cha, Wai Hnin and Kimi were taken to a makeshift studio in Yangon to begin a gruelling regimen of singing and dance training.
The Tiger Girls debuted three months later in Mandalay during the country’s Thingyan festival, the annual bacchanal of teenage drinking and public water fights that heralds the Myanmar New Year. Their provocative dress prompted a hostile reception, though. According to a contemporary account by British journalist Rosalind Russell, the women were pelted with plastic water bottles and footwear.
Yet in the three years that followed, they became an international sensation – if not one that ever found a sizeable following in their own country. As Myanmar began its slow transition away from decades of military rule, the Tiger Girls became, in the eyes of foreign media, an exemplar of the profound political changes taking place. They spoke publicly about their commitment to challenging the entrenched discrimination facing Myanmar women and their absurd battles with geriatric censorship authorities, such as when they were banned from performing in coloured wigs. After several performances in the region and further abroad, they were offered a recording deal with the Power House music label in Los Angeles.
But just as they seemed to be breaking through to a domestic audience, it fell apart. Moe Kyaw and May had parted early on in the venture, after the producer was frustrated in his efforts to tone down the act’s flirtatious image. He reserved his rights to the group’s name, though, forcing a reluctant rebrand as the Me N Ma Girls. Then, soon after releasing their second album, Wai Hnin left the group, ostensibly because of pressure to take care of her elderly family. Six months later, Cha Cha and Htike Htike also went their own way, after learning that their record deal left Power House with rights to their solo work. The remaining two members persevered for a month, before Kimi resolved to focus on her own solo career.
As difficult as it was at the time, it was ultimately fortuitous for the group’s breakout star and youngest member. “I was the only one who was left in the group!” Ah Moon told Southeast Asia Globe. “People have this myth that Ah Moon left the group and became popular, when the truth is everyone left to do their own things, and I was left sitting here. Then management asked what are you going to do, and I said: ‘I’m gonna keep singing!’”
Ah Moon spoke with Southeast Asia Globe from a rooftop wine bar in Yangon’s Myaynigone neighbourhood. Born in the Kachin capital of Myitkyina, in Myanmar’s far north, she began her music career at the age of four while performing in church halls and inked a deal with Myanmar Beer as a touring performer straight after finishing high school.
Now 26, she had just returned from a whirlwind tour of Japan, performing for the Myanmar migrant community there and filming two music videos from her forthcoming album. Now undoubtedly a national phenomenon, Ah Moon has attained 2.5 million Facebook fans in the three years since her solo career began.
It’s getting easier now… Back in 2014 I was called slut, bitch, told to get out of the country… But those words are not from the crowd; those words are only from the people that see the pictures [of me] on social media.
After the split, the other four Tiger Girls pursued their own solo careers with varying degrees of vigour. Then, in 2015, a year after the group’s final official single, the foursome announced their return as a group, reinvented once again to become the MyaNmar Girls.
Both Ah Moon and Cha Cha, who spoke on behalf of the group, said there was no acrimony on either side over the split and the formation of a new group that excluded one of its founding members. For Cha Cha, the group wanted to build their careers on their own merits, while Ah Moon continued with her overseas management.
When we decided to leave the group, we were all prepared to leave all the things of the old group, the support, the international interest and especially the budget,” Cha Cha said. “So as a result, we had to face all these challenges without the support which we had [come to expect].”
A year after they got back together, Wai Hnin suddenly stopped appearing on the group’s promotional material. Ah Moon suggested she had been kicked out, something Cha Cha denied. She did admit there had been disagreements but said that Wai Hnin had decided to stop pursuing a career in music and now works at a private company, regularly catching up with the other three.
While the remaining trio have become national celebrities, appearing regularly on magazine covers and at high-society events, it has been challenging to work in a music market dominated by a small number of acts with big financial backing. The group’s debut last year, the up-tempo and raunchy Shake It!, was entirely self-funded without the resources for a big promotional campaign on billboards and in print media.
But unlike when their careers began, the audience is there. A market for the assertive, come-hither style of pop music on which the Tiger Girls built their brand now exists in Myanmar. The credit is all theirs.
“It’s getting easier now,” Ah Moon said. “Back in 2014 I was called slut, bitch, told to get out of the country… But those words are not from the crowd; those words are only from the people that see the pictures [of me] on social media. I had the love of all my fans who saw me face-to-face. They loved my performances; they supported me. I had the courage and the energy to overcome that… and that moment of being criticised is kind of over.”
Yet, in other respects, breaking out as an artist has become harder. The new government, led by Aung San Suu Kyi, has long been accused of a puritanical streak that rivals that of its predecessor and has made regular noises about the need to tone down the excesses of the Thingyan holiday. One of the MyaNmar Girls’ first public performances in 2015 was a headline slot in front of a rapturous Thingyan audience in Mandalay, the same time and place where five years earlier they’d been heckled mercilessly. This year, a ban on commercial stages at the festival meant the MyaNmar Girls couldn’t perform at all.

Kyirisan (Washington, DC)
Kyirisan Restaurant 1924 8th St NW, Washington, DC 20001 202.525.2383 www.kyirisandc.com Thu 07/26/2018, 08:10p-11:20p
For the third and final dinner of my latest DC visit, I chose a lesser known restaurant that sounded interesting to me. Kyirisan was opened in March 2016 by Chef Tim Ma and wife Joey Hernandez and serves Asian-French fare in the northern portion of Shaw. A note about the name: it's formed from a combination of "Kun" (the generational name of the couple's three children) and the numbers 1-2-3 (yi-er-san) in Chinese.
About the Chef: Ma was born in 1978 to parents who immigrated to the US from Taiwan in the 1970s, and he grew up in the midst of their Chinese restaurant in Maumelle, Arkansas. The family eventually moved to New York in the 80s, where his uncle ran the well-regarded Paul Ma's China Kitchen in Yorktown Heights. Later on, they relocated to northern Virginia, and Ma attended Centreville High School in Fairfax County, where he excelled in math and science. Following, he chose to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology, majoring in electrical and computer engineering, and graduated from Georgia Tech in 2000 after spending five years there; he later went on to attain a master's degree as well. He then became a government contractor, working in engineering for Raytheon in Falls Church.
However, Ma was always drawn to the kitchen, and, after a sushi meal with his sister and brother-in-law in LA in 2006, declared that he wanted to have his own restaurant. His family was not pleased, but he pushed forward, moved to New York with Hernandez, and enrolled at the French Culinary Institute in 2008. During this period, he externed at David Chang's acclaimed Momofuku Ko, and upon graduating, cooked briefly in Saint Thomas. Ma and his now-fiancée subsequently returned to NoVa and opened their first restaurant in August 2009: Maple Ave in Vienna. Located in a former donut shop in a somewhat odd part of town, the spot started out slow, but eventually made a name for itself for its Asian-inflected new American cuisine. After leaving the day-to-day running of Maple Ave to CdC Nyi Nyi Myint, the couple followed up with Water & Wall in Virginia Square, Arlington. The restaurant bowed in November 2013, and was named after the NYC intersection where the two lived while the Chef was attending culinary school.
In 2014, the Mas began looking for a home for Kyirisan, and after passing on the location where The Dabney now resides, signed on for a space in the yet-to-be-built Shay apartment complex. February 2015 saw the duo leave Maple Ave (as did Myint, who joined Water & Wall), while the Chef kicked off the Gather + Feast supper club on Kickstarter a month later. In November that year, Ma teamed up with Michael Amouri of Caffe Amouri and launched Chase the Submarine (a sandwich shop named after his son) in Vienna. As for Kyirisan (its original name Freehand was nixed by the Sydell Group), it ended up debuting in March 2016 with Myint once again on board. Not long after, the place drew a 2.5 star review from The Washington Post's Tom Sietsema, while Michelin bestowed a Bib Gourmand in October 2016. Shortly after the Michelin nod, it was announced that Ma would be consulting on the menu for the upcoming Ten Tigers Parlor, a bar with Asian-y fare that ended up opening in December that year with Myint at the helm yet again.
Some bad news came in February 2017 with the shutter of Water & Wall, though that same month saw Kyirisan on Washingtonian's "100 Very Best Restaurants" list. In June 2017, Ma and company decamped from Ten Tigers, replaced by none other than Erik Bruner-Yang. Meanwhile, in November it was announced that Ma and Derek Brown (who's no longer involved, sadly) would be opening concepts inside the upcoming Eaton, a hotel project from Katherine Lo (daughter of Langham Hospitality Group chairman Ka Shui Lo). Chase the Submarine ended up closing the same month, while Michelin once again deemed Kyirisan Bib Gourmand worthy in October.
Kyirisan is located on the ground floor of The Shay apartment building and was penned by Grizform Design Architects, a local firm that was also responsible for Doi Moi, Estadio, and Fiola, among other projects. The space is supposed to have a homey sort of feel, with blue being the dominant hue it seems. Note also the "Cook Nook" in the photo above, a communal table that can accommodate up to a dozen diners.
Kyirisan's fusion-y menu is refreshingly brief, which I'm appreciating more and more these days. In addition to dinner, the restaurant also serves brunch on weekends, and has happy hour at the bar every day except Saturday. Drink-wise, you get a small array of cocktails along with a handful of beers/ciders, not to mention a compact wine list featuring smaller producers from France and the West Coast US. Corkage, meanwhile, is $25 a pop, with no limit on the number of bottles, which is nice. Click for larger versions.
Way Off Base [$15.00] | Mezcal, Scotch, Falernum, Lime, Bitters The evening's first cocktail was a winner. I definitely got a smokiness on the nose, joined by plenty of contrasting citrus. Taste-wise, things were fruity from the falernum at first, but then the spicy, boozy nature of the mezcal-whisky combo made itself known on the finish.
Chinese Smashed Cucumbers [$7.00] | Crispy Garlic, Benne Seed, Fresno Chilies Cucumbers were delightfully crunchy, their tart, refreshing flavors well matched by a smidgen of heat and the nuttiness of those sesame seeds. A fun, promising start.
Fried Okra [$12.00] | Cauliflower, Feuilletine, Cilantro Fish Sauce Okra and cauliflower were doused with a heavy helping of fish sauce, which gave the dish a decidedly salty, savory funk. It was pretty intense, so I could've used some additional herbs or something to balance things out more. I also would've liked less cook and more crunch on the veggies.
Whiskey & Weird [$13.00] | Rye, Becherovka Herbal Liqueur, Sage Shrub The next cocktail showed off a somewhat "eggy" aroma, with notes of sweet citrus and sage as well. Its taste was definitely on the sweet side, and not boozy at all, with some herbaceous notes providing a modicum of balance to the drink.
Tuna Carpaccio [$19.00] | Kabosu Shoyu, Thai Chilies, Ground Cherries, Avocado Slightly gristly cuts of tuna certainly took on some umami notes from the shoyu, while the cherries added a surprisingly floral touch. I did get the citrusy character of the kabosu on the finish, but did feel that the dish needed some more acidity, more brightness to really make it pop.
Golden Tilefish [$22.00] | Bacon & Chive Dashi, Savoy Cabbage, Green Tomato Tilefish was cooked just right, coming out properly flaky and flavorful, with a wonderfully crisp skin to boot. The dashi worked swimmingly as a complement, but the tomato, I will say, did seem a bit out of place.
Manhattan [$11.00] The classic Manhattan cocktail made a worthwhile showing tonight. I got lots of bitters on the nose, along with moderating elements of dark fruit. In terms of taste, think spirit-forward, and quite spicy from the rye, the vermouth peeking through just a bit.
Hanger Steak [$23.00] | Green Tomato Salsa Verde, Kohlrabi, Turnip, Mint Hanger steak was quite tasty, and made sense with the zippiness of its paired salsa verde. However, I wasn't as keen on the kohlrabi-turnip combination, as the root veggies just seemed bland here.
Duck Confit [$22.00] | Brussels Sprouts, Black Truffle Aioli, Apple Cider Gastrique A duck confit was as rich as you'd expect, with lots of salty, savory flavors amped up even further by the char of Brussels and a restrained muskiness from the truffle. The cider gastrique did provided a touch of tartness to the mix, but overall the dish felt heavy and could've really used something to brighten it up.
"Unnamed Cocktail #1" | Rum, Tawny Port, Amaretto, Kalamansi At this point, I asked my server (who was also a bartender) to whip up something on the fly, and this is what he came up with (which ended up being comped). It was a combination of Smith & Cross rum, ¼oz amaretto, and ½oz tawny port, along with kalamansi purée. Its aromas were citric and bitter, the richness of the port showing through. Taste-wise, I got the deep, caramel-y notes of the rum at first, joined by a bevy of sweet, nutty flavors that worked out surprisingly well.
I made sure to save room for the desserts, which basically follow the same theme as the savory menu. Click for a larger version.
Kabosu Lime Pie [$11.00] | Pistachio, Thai Basil, Gooseberry This citrusy pie delivered. The tartness of kabosu was front and center, linking up beautifully with the pistachios while the crumbly crust served as a moderating element.
Cherry Sundae [$9.00] | Black Cherry Ice Cream, Puffed Buckwheat, Chocolate The reimagined sundae was even better, and actually one of the stronger desserts I've had in DC. The ice cream was pretty marvelous by itself, but was even better when paired with the Nestlé Crunch-esque shards of chocolate. Excellent use of the buckwheat too as a nutty, crunchy component.
"Unnamed Cocktail #2" | Fernet, Arrack, Sweet Vermouth, Hopped Grapefruit Bitters We ended with another complimentary cocktail from my server, and for this one I requested something that would work as a digestif. It was a combination of 1½oz Fernet Francisco, ½oz Batavia arrack,
I had a lot of mixed feelings about my meal here. I feel like there were some good ideas, some intriguing ideas, but many of the dishes just fell short. Perhaps the kitchen simply wasn't in top form given the impending opening of Ma's restaurant inside the Eaton, which should be dropping in the coming weeks. The spot, called American Son, will be an all-day affair featuring the Chef's take on "comfort food," but informed by his immigrant background. It sounds pretty promising, and I may have to give the place a go on a future trip despite any misgivings I have about Kyirisan.

Wuhan Coronavirus, Australia Firefighters, Myanmar Ruling: Your Friday Briefing
(Want to get this briefing by email? Here’s the sign-up.)
Good morning.
We’re covering a lockdown in China to prevent the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus, a resurgence in Australia fires after a brief reprieve and the gentrification of Paris.
Tens of millions on lockdown in China because of a viral outbreak
The authorities imposed strict travel restrictions on five cities, including Wuhan, the epicenter of a deadly respiratory virus that has already spread to Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Taiwan and the U.S. Here are the latest updates.
Experts said the size of the lockdown, which affects roughly 20 million people, was unprecedented. A patient also died in the province of Hebei, 600 miles north of Wuhan, in the first confirmed death outside the epicenter.
The World Health Organization decided not to declare a global health emergency — yet. Several members thought it was “still too early,” the W.H.O. said in a statement.
The details: The virus has killed at least 18 and sickened more than 600. Here are maps of its spread. The victims are so far mostly older men, many of whom had previous health issues.
What’s next: The Lunar New Year holiday, when hundreds of millions travel across China, begins today. Epidemiologists fear it could make the outbreak harder to contain.
The fiery crash, on a hill near a wildlife sanctuary, ended a brief lull in the country’s summer of deadly wildfires. Rain had offered a reprieve, but temperatures roared back on Thursday to over 100 degrees.
“We’re devastated because those Americans, they’re not going home,” said Alison Myers, a deputy captain with the Numeralla fire brigade, which covers the surrounding district.
Context: At least five firefighters have been killed this season, and the death toll from the fires now exceeds 30. More than 2,500 homes have been destroyed, and millions of acres have burned.
Myanmar must protect Rohingya, Hague court rules
The International Court of Justice ruled on Thursday that Myanmar must “take all measures within its power” to protect Rohingya Muslims, who have been killed and driven from their homes in what the country’s accusers have called a campaign of genocide.
The court said the Rohingya faced “real and imminent risk” as it put Myanmar under judicial oversight. The move essentially rejected the defenses offered by the country’s civilian leader, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
Impact: Some observers noted that because the court did not outline specific steps and does not have enforcement power, it would take more action to protect the ethnic minority group. “The chances of Aung San Suu Kyi implementing this ruling will be zero unless significant international pressure is applied,” said the director of one human rights group.
Background: In 2017, Myanmar’s military waged a brutal assault against the Rohingya in the western state of Rakhine, prompting more than 700,000 to flee to neighboring Bangladesh.
If you have 7 minutes, this is worth it
The gentrification of Paris
When the brothers Ali and Amar Sitayeb, above, opened a convenience store in 1984 in the Marais, Paris’s historically Jewish quarter, the neighborhood had plenty of textile and metal factories.
Today, their shop is among the independent businesses being swept away by gentrification. A Japanese-owned lingerie chain will take the space.
“How is a bra going to replace my orange juice?” asked a retiree who has lived next to the shop for two decades.
Here’s what else is happening
Angola: Isabel dos Santos, the daughter of the country’s former president, is set to face charges after an investigation into the embezzlement of millions from the state oil company, which she once headed. A banker who managed the company’s account was found dead at his Lisbon home in what was most likely a suicide, a police source said.
Impeachment: House managers laid out their legal case against President Trump. The Senate is expected to meet for an abbreviated session on Saturday. Follow our updates here.
Jungle prince, epilogue: For those of you who were as obsessed as we were with Ellen Barry’s story about a Delhi family that presented itself as royalty, here’s an update based on leads from readers’ letters and emails.
Snapshot: Above, world leaders coming together in Israel for the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. They talked about rising anti-Semitism.
What we’re reading: This profile of Lizzo in Rolling Stone “reveals how hard the Grammy-nominated singer fought to become a new kind of superstar,” writes Remy Tumin on the Briefings team. “The photos by David LaChapelle alone are worth the read.”
Now, a break from the news
Cook: Pasta alla vodka is a 30-minute dinner that leaves enough time to make a salad and pour a glass of wine. Skip the pancetta to make it vegetarian.
Watch: Twenty-five years after the release of “Before Sunrise,” the film’s stars and creators spoke to The Times about how they made movie magic out of a tiny budget and capricious trains.
Read: “Leadership Strategy and Tactics,” by the former Navy SEAL Jocko Willink, is a No. 1 debut on our advice, how-to and miscellaneous best-seller list.
Smarter Living: Our Climate Fwd: newsletter usually brings us a weekly tip on “One thing you can do for the environment,” but this week, its team is looking at the bigger picture.
And now for the Back Story on …
The impeachment diet
Of the many rules that govern the Senate impeachment trial of President Trump, there is none more incongruous than the food and drink allowed on the floor during the marathon proceedings: water, milk and candy. That’s it.
The candy is thanks to the “candy desk,” a historical relic that is currently assigned to Senator Patrick Toomey of Pennsylvania. It’s on the Republican side of the chamber, in the back row on the aisle.
The tradition of the candy desk started in 1965 with Senator George Murphy, a sweet-toothed California Republican, and in recent years has been controlled by lawmakers from Pennsylvania, which has the country’s biggest confectionary industry. It’s currently stocked with Hershey bars with almonds, Rolo caramels, Milky Ways, 3 Musketeers bars, Palmer Peanut Butter Cups and Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews.
As for beverages, only water is permitted — either still or sparkling — though a legislative rule book does refer to a lawmaker being permitted to ask for a glass of milk in 1966. Unfortunately for everyone involved in the proceedings, which have so far made for some very long days, coffee is not allowed.
That’s it for this briefing. See you next time.
— Melina

Manchester United footballer Marouane Fellaini sues sportswear firm for £2m over 'defective boots' | New Balance
Shoppers go nuts over $25 New Balance Running shoes. New Balance have argued that Fellaini told them he was happy with the boots. SG Americas Securities LLC bought a new position in The Finish Line in the second quarter worth $102,000. Several cabinet secretaries are to be dropped and others redeployed to other portfolios to reflect new balance of power and 2022 succession plan.
Boston-based New Balance Athletics, Inc. debuts 'Winter Peaks', a New Balance Made US 998 model, in advance of the winter season. Footpatrol and New Balance will be linking up for a special and limited Black Friday release. Judging from her body language during and after her meeting with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in Nay Pyi Taw, one could easily assume that Myanmar's relations with the European Union are reaching a new phase.
A High Court judge might have to examine a series of WhatsApp messages if asked to rule on a row over footballer Marouane Fellaini's boots. Bosses at sportswear giant New Balance have shot back after Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini complained that his football boots rubbed. But New Balance claim they have WhatsApp messages to prove Fellaini was happy with the boots. And Republicans, for their part, are likely to press Mr. Sessions on their demands for investigations into the Clinton Foundation and an Obama-era purchase of American uranium mines by a Russian-backed company.

The biannual fashion weeks hosted in New York, London, Milan and Paris have dominated the industry calendar for decades. In recent years, however, a clutch of new contenders have started jostling for attention, including Dubai, where Arab Fashion Week begins tomorrow.
The five-day event is a predictably splashy affair, showcasing talent from the 22 countries that make up the Arab League. Plenty of emerging Western designers are also on the schedule, keen to cater to the valuable Middle Eastern client base.
Expect a broad mix of both Western-style ready-to-wear and modest clothing from the catwalk collections. As a growing global chorus of women demands attire that is in tune both with Islam and the societies around them, designers are responding with flowing printed tunics and colorful head scarves. Interestingly, designers from abroad are often the more conservative.
Modest fashion is becoming a commercial phenomenon. The global Muslim clothing market is forecast to be worth $368 billion by 2021, according to the latest Global Islamic Economy report. With its blend of trends from all over the world, Arab Fashion Week is playing a considerable role in reshaping perceptions of 21st-century Muslim female identity in ways that go far beyond the veil.

French President Defends International Cooperation At UN

UNITED NATIONS -- French President Emmanuel Macron issued a ringing defense of global cooperation Tuesday, telling world leaders that solving major challenges otherwise will be reduced to "the survival of the fittest."
In his first appearance at the U.N. General Assembly, Macron vowed to press ahead with the Paris accord to combat global warming, although the United States has said it is withdrawing.
He also said France won't "close any door to dialogue" with North Korea and that it would be "a grave error" to unwind the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran as it faces strong criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump. Macron also called for investing in education and health, and he proposed appointing a U.N. representative for press freedom.
Seven decades after the end of World War II and the creation of the United Nations, international bodies are confronting doubts, Macron said.
"We have allowed the idea to proliferate that multilateralism is a kind of game, a game for diplomats sitting around a table," he said, but have come up short on addressing such major threats as climate change.
"Today, more than ever before, we need multilateralism" to work on that and other global issues, such as war and terrorism, Macron said.
"We can only address those challenges through multilateralism," he said, "not through survival of the fittest."
Macron presented a counterpoint to Trump, who in his own debut speech at the General Assembly a few hours earlier had urged countries to embrace their own "national sovereignty" to do more to ensure their own prosperity and security.
Trump had tough words for North Korea, threatening to "totally destroy" the Asian nation if the U.S. is forced to defend itself or its allies against aggression, and also for the Iran pact, which he called "an embarrassment" to the U.S. He hinted that his administration could soon declare Iran out of compliance with the deal, which could unravel it.
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, meanwhile, warned that the threat of a nuclear attack is at its highest level since the end of the Cold War and "fiery talk can lead to fatal misunderstandings."
His message in his first state-of-the-world report since taking the reins of the United Nations on Jan. 1, was implicitly directed at North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, but also at Trump. The two have traded tough rhetoric amid Pyongyang's continuing nuclear and missile tests.
Speaking to presidents, prime ministers and monarchs at the opening of the General Assembly's annual ministerial meeting, the U.N. chief put "nuclear peril" as the leading global threat, warning that "we must not sleepwalk our way into war." He said there must be a political solution to North Korea's activities, stressing: "This is a time for statesmanship."
Beyond the nuclear threat, Guterres painted a grim picture of a troubled world facing grave challenges with many people "hurting and angry" because they "see insecurity rising, inequality growing, conflict spreading and climate changing."
"Societies are fragmented," he said. "Political discourse is polarized. Trust within and among countries is being driven down by those who demonize and divide."
"We are a world in pieces," Guterres said. "We need to be a world at peace."
Guterres said there are seven threats and tests that stand in the way: nuclear peril, terrorism, unresolved conflicts and systematic violations of international humanitarian law, climate change, rising inequality, unintended consequences of innovation, and people on the move.
These issues are expected to dominate the six-day meeting. On day one, however, the spotlight was on Trump and Macron.
Many world leaders were getting their first chance to hear and meet Trump. He said the United States seeks harmony and friendship, not conflict and strife on the world stage, but he warned that Americans "can no longer be taken advantage of."
He said all responsible nations must work together to confront terrorists and Islamic extremists that inspire them. And "it is time to expose and hold responsible" nations that provide funding and safe harbor to terror groups, Trump said.
He spoke after Guterres and Brazil's president, who for more than 35 years has been the first leader to address the 193-member General Assembly.
Brazilian President Michel Temer, charged last week with obstruction of justice and leading a criminal organization, continued the tradition.
He said the U.N. has represented "hope and prospects for a more just world" for the last 70 years and at "this time in history, marked by so much uncertainty and instability, we need more diplomacy, not less - and "we need the U.N. more than before."
But Temer said it is imperative to reform the U.N., particularly to expand the powerful Security Council to align it with the reality of the 21st century. Brazil is part of a group with Germany, India and Japan seeking permanent seats on the council.
Not far behind North Korea on the list of issues needing urgent international attention is the plight of Myanmar's Rohingya Muslims, victims of what Guterres called a campaign of "ethnic cleansing" that has driven nearly 400,000 to flee into Bangladesh in the past three weeks.
Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who canceled plans to attend the General Assembly in a decision widely seen as a response to international criticism, earlier Tuesday defended the government and said her country does not fear international scrutiny. She invited diplomats to see some areas for themselves.
Guterres told leaders in his General Assembly address that "I take note" of Suu Kyi's speech.
"We are all shocked by the dramatic escalation of sectarian tensions in Myanmar's Rakhine State," he said. "The authorities in Myanmar must end the military operations, and allow unhindered humanitarian access. They must also address the grievances of the Rohingya, whose status has been left unresolved for far too long."
The world leaders gathered as Hurricane Maria, a Category 5 storm, smashed the small Caribbean nation of Dominica with 160 mph winds. It ripped the roof off even the prime minister's residence and caused what he called "mind-boggling" devastation. The storm was on a track to strike Puerto Rico on Wednesday.
On Monday, Guterres and top government officials from several countries devastated by the other Category 5 storm, Hurricane Irma, addressed a hastily called U.N. meeting and appealed for help to rebuild following that storm's destruction.
Guterres has repeatedly focused on the challenge posed by climate change.
He called this year's hurricane season "the most violent on record" and warned that extreme weather linked to climate change is having an impact all over the world, "including floods in southern Asia and landslides and droughts in Africa."
