A Beginner’s Guide to Living in Kuwait
Tumblr media
Kuwait is a dynamic and rapidly growing country in the Gulf region, attracting expats from around the world. Whether you're moving to Kuwait for work, study, or personal reasons, adjusting to life in a new country can be both exciting and overwhelming. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the essentials of living in Kuwait, from understanding local customs to finding accommodation and everything in between.
1. Understanding Kuwaiti Culture
Kuwait is a country with a rich history and diverse cultural influences. The Kuwaiti people are known for their hospitality, and the local culture is deeply rooted in Islamic traditions. As a beginner, it’s important to respect local customs and be aware of cultural differences. For example, dress modestly in public places, especially in areas like malls or government offices.
In addition, knowing a few Arabic phrases can be helpful. While English is widely spoken, especially in business and expat communities, Arabic is the official language of Kuwait.
2. Visa and Residency Information
Before you move to Kuwait, you will need to secure a valid visa. Most expats enter Kuwait on a work or residency visa, sponsored by their employer. It’s crucial to ensure all paperwork is in order to avoid delays or complications during the relocation process. As part of your visa requirements, you will likely need to undergo a medical check-up and background check.
3. Finding Accommodation in Kuwait
When moving to Kuwait, finding a place to live is one of the first tasks you’ll need to handle. The country offers a range of housing options, from high-rise apartments to villas and compounds. Areas such as Salmiya, Hawally, and Kuwait City are popular among expats due to their central locations and availability of amenities.
You may also want to consider renting a furnished apartment, as many properties in Kuwait come fully furnished, making the transition easier. As a beginner, it's advisable to work with a local real estate agent to find the right accommodation that fits your needs and budget.
4. Transportation and Getting Around
Public transportation in Kuwait is not as developed as in other cities around the world, so many expats rely on private cars or taxis for getting around. If you're planning to drive in Kuwait, you will need a valid driving license, which can often be converted from an international driving permit or another GCC country license.
Alternatively, ride-hailing services like Uber and Careem are widely available and offer a convenient way to navigate the city.
5. Cost of Living in Kuwait
Kuwait is known for its high standard of living, but it also has a relatively high cost of living compared to many other countries in the region. Accommodation and dining out are some of the most significant expenses. However, groceries and local transportation are relatively affordable.
It’s important to keep in mind that the cost of living will depend on your lifestyle and the area you choose to live in. Expats working in Kuwait often receive housing allowances and other benefits that can help offset living costs.
6. Healthcare in Kuwait
Kuwait offers excellent healthcare services, with both public and private hospitals available. As a resident, you may have access to free or subsidized healthcare through the government, depending on your visa type and employer benefits. Private healthcare providers are also an option, offering a wide range of medical services.
Make sure to get health insurance, either through your employer or privately, to ensure access to the best care. Kuwait’s medical facilities are well-equipped, but it's always recommended to have insurance in place to cover unforeseen medical expenses.
7. Shopping and Entertainment
Kuwait boasts a variety of shopping malls, markets, and entertainment options. Malls like The Avenues and Marina Mall offer both luxury and international brands, while traditional souks (markets) give you a taste of Kuwaiti culture. The country also offers a wide variety of dining options, from local Kuwaiti cuisine to international food chains.
Kuwait is home to several cultural landmarks, including museums, parks, and beaches. Whether you want to explore Kuwait's rich history at the Kuwait National Museum or relax at one of the country’s pristine beaches, there’s something for everyone.
8. Education in Kuwait
For expats with children, choosing the right school is a top priority. Kuwait has a number of international schools offering curriculums from countries like the UK, USA, and India. Many expat families choose international schools due to their high standards of education and diverse student bodies.
When considering schools for your child, be sure to research tuition fees, facilities, and the school’s academic performance. Admission can sometimes be competitive, so it’s best to start early.
9. Social Life and Networking
One of the perks of living in Kuwait is the large and diverse expat community. Whether you're looking to meet new people, network for work, or join social clubs, there are plenty of opportunities to connect. Many expats find it helpful to join online groups or attend local meetups to share tips and advice about living in Kuwait.
10. Safety and Security in Kuwait
Kuwait is considered a safe place to live and visit. The crime rate is relatively low, and the country has a strong police presence. However, like in any new place, it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings and follow local laws and regulations to ensure your safety.
Conclusion
Living in Kuwait as a beginner can be a rewarding experience with the right preparation. By understanding the local culture, securing the necessary paperwork, and familiarizing yourself with everyday life in Kuwait, you'll be well on your way to making the most of your time in this beautiful country.
Whether you’re relocating for work or personal reasons, the key to settling in smoothly is to take your time, ask questions, and be open to new experiences. HelpXpat Kuwait is here to support you every step of the way with expert relocation services to make your transition seamless.

UK ETA for Indians: What You Need to Know
Tumblr media
Introduction
Are you planning a trip to the UK from India and you've heard about this newfangled Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) thing. You might be wondering if it applies to you and how it affects your travel plans.
Let's clear things up!
What Indian Travellers Need to Know: UK ETA Explained
What is this UK ETA All About?
Think of the ETA as a digital travel pass. It's a bit like the US ESTA system. Eventually, most folks who don't need a full-blown visa for short trips to the UK will need to get one. It's all part of making the UK border more secure and making travel a smoother experience.
Here's the lowdown on the UK ETA:
It'll cost you a tenner (£10).
It's good for two years or until your passport expires (whichever comes first).
You can use it for multiple trips to the UK within that time.
Applying is pretty straightforward and quick - you'll usually get a decision within 3 working days.
You can apply using the snazzy UK ETA app or do it online through GOV.UK.
So, Who Needs This ETA Thing?
The UK is rolling out the ETA scheme in stages, meaning different nationalities become eligible at different times. Here's the current situation (as of November 2024):
Folks from countries like Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan already need an ETA.
Lots of other nationalities are also eligible, including those from the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe.
And here's what's coming down the line:
EU citizens will need an ETA from April 2, 2025.
Other nationalities will be added over time.
Of course, there are some lucky ducks who don't need an ETA:
British and Irish citizens are all right, mate!
Holders of British Overseas Territories passports are also good to go.
If you've already got a UK visa or permission to live, work, or study there (including settled or pre-settled status), you're sorted.
But What About Us Indians? Do We Need an ETA?
The big question, right?
The short answer is no.
Currently, Indian citizens are not on the list of nationalities who need an ETA to travel to the UK.
Read: Step-by-Step Guide for Applying for a UK Visa from India
UK Visa Requirements for Indian Travellers: The Same Old Story
For now, things haven't changed much for us. If you're Indian and want to pop over to the UK, you'll still need to get a visa. The usual visa for visitors from India is the Standard Visitor Visa.
Here's what you can do with a Standard Visitor Visa:
Enjoy a good old holiday!
Visit family and friends.
Do some quick business things, like going to meetings or conferences.
Take a short course of study.
Get medical treatment.
But here's what you can't do with it:
Work in the UK (even if it's unpaid).
Claim any benefits.
Try to live in the UK by making loads of short trips back and forth.
Get married or have a civil partnership ceremony.
Okay, So How Do I Get This Standard Visitor Visa?
The process is pretty much the same as before:
Fill out the online application form. You'll find it on the UK Visas and Immigration website (GOV.UK).
Cough up the visa fee. It's currently £115.
Get all your documents together. You'll need your passport, proof you can pay for your trip, details of your travel plans, and where you'll be staying. An invitation letter might be needed, too, depending on why you're going.
Go to a visa application centre in India for a biometric appointment. They'll take your fingerprints and a photo.
Then it's the waiting game. It can take up to 3 weeks (or sometimes longer) to get a decision.
Read, Detailed Guide on: UK Standard Visitor Visa
A Quick Word About the Common Travel Area (CTA)
Just a quick heads-up about the CTA, which is an agreement between the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man. It means citizens of these places can move freely between them.
Here's how the ETA affects the CTA:
British and Irish citizens can travel within the CTA without an ETA - no problem!
If you legally live in Ireland but aren't a British or Irish citizen, you might not need an ETA if you're coming to the UK directly from within the CTA. But you will need one if you're coming from a country outside the CTA.
Key Points to Remember, My Friend
For now, the UK ETA doesn't apply to Indian citizens. No change there!
You still need a Standard Visitor Visa to travel to the UK from India.
Getting a visa involves that online application, paying the fee, sorting out your documents, going for that biometric appointment, and then waiting (not so fun!).
Apply well in advance of your trip, just in case things take longer than expected.
Keep an eye on the UK Visas and Immigration website for any updates on the ETA and visa rules - things can change!
Hope that helps! Enjoy your trip to the UK!

Why You Might Consider a Move to Kuwait
If you’ve been thinking about moving to a new country, you might want to consider a move to Kuwait. The small Gulf nation offers a unique blend of modern infrastructure and traditional culture. Whether you’re drawn to the business opportunities, the warm climate, or the chance to experience a new lifestyle, Kuwait has a lot to offer.
Kuwait's economy is largely driven by oil, and the country offers many jobs in sectors like finance, healthcare, and construction. For expats, this means plenty of opportunities, especially if you're skilled in one of these industries. The country also offers tax-free salaries, which can be a big draw for those looking to save or invest.
However, life in Kuwait isn’t without its challenges. The cost of living, especially when it comes to housing and imported goods, can be high. Additionally, the climate can be harsh, with temperatures soaring above 40°C (104°F) in the summer, which can be tough to adjust to.
Despite these challenges, Kuwait offers a rich cultural experience. The country blends modernity with deep-rooted traditions, and you can explore everything from futuristic architecture to historical sites. The local cuisine, which includes dishes like hummus, falafel, and shawarma, is a highlight for many.
A move to Kuwait also means adjusting to a different pace of life. The workweek is Sunday to Thursday, leaving Fridays and Saturdays for relaxation or exploring the country. Kuwait has a strong expat community, so it’s easy to find people from all over the world.
Ultimately, moving to Kuwait is about weighing the pros and cons. If you're looking for career opportunities, a chance to experience a new culture, and don't mind the heat, it could be an exciting new chapter in your life.
