Kuumba du Falafel

Good felafel shops are something of a rare thing here in Tokyo, but they do exist. Case-in-point: Kuumba du Falafel. Something of a hidden treasure in the Shinsen neighbourhood, it's unlikely you'd ever stumble across it unless you lived here, and even then it's somewhat distant from the more obvious restaurants and cafes in the area. 

But if you're after a healthy alternative to the standard Shibuya-fare, then Kuumba du Falafel won't disappoint. The felafel sandwiches come in both half and full sizes (880 yen and 1200 yen respectively), and both are packed full of hummus and fresh vegetables – including lettuce, tomato, eggplant, and cucumber. Deep beneath this wall of salad are the falafels, which add extra layers of texture with a satisfying crunch.

Kuumba du Falafel also offers a lunch set for 1000 yen, made up of a half-size felafel sandwich and a lentil soup. It's good value for money, but I recommend going with the full-size sandwich or the Fresh Salad de Pita plate instead – they really are worth the extra couple of coins, and why reward yourself for coming all the way out here? ;)

On weekdays it's easy enough to simply walk in and get a space at the eight seat counter, but expect a bit of a wait on weekends at lunch time – the local residents are hungry, and the staff rush their orders for nobody. That said, it's easy enough to just get yourself a Hitachino White Ale, sit back, and soak up the relaxed atmosphere and the chilled out beats while you wait.
