The hypocrisy of Jinshi and MaoMao
*light novel spoilers*
I just love how hypocritical MaoMao's nature is. She yells at Jinshi for being a 'Masochist' and yet we see that she's no different. Now, by definition Masochist is a person who drives sexual gratification from their own pain and humiliation, plus it relates to Jinshi's tendency to do self harm (like burning his skin with a brand)
And what is MaoMao's most favourite thing in this world?
POISON
She literally takes pleasure in consuming it and no one can convince me otherwise. Plus she uses dangerous plants and animals and snakes whatnot in the name of her so-called experiments. Her dad may call her a 'mad Scientist' but that is a direct indication of self harm.
And she calls Jinshi a Masochist.
I mean, think about it! The amount of anxiety she gives to Jinshi! She came prepared with a vomit inducing medicine but even she had no idea whether it would work or not. She was just hoping it would work in the salt chapter.
And the same goes for her hand, on which she has conducted countless experiments. One flower even burned her skin and its marks never left her skin. She said it was all for her hobby. What kind of weird hobby is that? Maybe, our little adorable mad scientist is just like that.
One brands his own skin, while the other takes heavenly pleasure in consuming poison.
So my point is, Jinshi and MaoMao are not that different as one might think they are and that's why their dynamic works so well.
Let's look at the excerpts from volume 5:
She didnât know how long they sat that way. All she knew was that Jinshi was looking down at her with a faintly triumphant expression, as if he saw that the breath had reached every corner of her body now. He wiped away the tears that had sprung to her eyes as she struggled to breathe. It was then that Maomao felt a flash of intense anger. âI said that if you were going to kill me, you should do it with poison,â she told him. âI refuse to let you poison yourself,â Jinshi said, his fingers tracing her lips. âYou canât pretend you didnât know that you were one of the candidates. As much as Iâm sure youâd like to.â He wasnât done, either: âWho was that man, anyway? Iâm sure youâre not a dancer.â So he had been watching them! âI was just paying for my drink,â Maomao said. âIt didnât cost much.â She tried to look away, but with his hand on her head, she really couldnât.
Jinshi just choked her and yet he refuses to let MaoMao poison herself. A lot of people misinterpret this scene, and don't like it all that much, saying it was just fanservice stuff but this is how I see it: Jinshi wasn't trying to kill MaoMao, he was just trying to make MaoMao submit to him for once (even if the way he did it was very wrong, but guess he's kinky like that). MaoMao is actively trying to harm herself and Jinshi loves MaoMao a lot, he cannot just let her kill herself.
It was more about him trying to exert his dominance in their weirdish - complicated relationship and that also backfires on him as we see in the next volume that MaoMao escapes Jinshi's grasps using Pairin's techniques.
And then they both continue to avoid each other in the entire next volume! Because they both realised that they have crossed boundaries.
They both are hypocrites.
And they both refuse to accept their feelings.
In one of the later volumes, she gives Jinshi a piece of her mind on how he should tell her everything clearly, unequivocally, what he feels, and he literally declares that "he will make her his wife", which is nice and all but look at the wording MaoMao used here....
Excerpts from LN Vol 7, chapter 19 called "A man and a woman play the game"
"Youâre forever telling me I need to use my words, Master Jinshi, but are you in any position to criticize? Everything you say to me, everything you do, itâs like itâs calculated to save you from ever having to actually say what you mean! To make me figure it all out! You know, you remind me of someone. You act exactly like a man who used to come by our brothel all the time. He was in love with one of the girls, but he would never just come out and say it. He thought it should be obvious from the way he acted. He was so sure he had a good thing going with this woman that he never sent her so much as a letter. I remember how forlorn he looked when someone else swooped in and snatched her away! He kept coming to the brothel after thatâto get drunk and whine to the ladies. Well, in my opinion, he could have avoided all that heartbreak if heâd told the woman how he felt. Clearly, unequivocally, so that she knew where they stood. It was the least he could have done!â
Everything came out in a torrent. She felt like sheâd said it all in one breath. It was strange, she thought, to hear so many words come out of her own mouth. She was mystified. Jinshi was no less startled, but the shock soon left his face, replaced by something else. He got up off the bed and stared down at Maomao.
Shit. Now Iâve done it. Sheâd given him a piece of her mind, and he was about to give her one back.
âSo I should be clear, should I? Unequivocal? I should say what I mean? If I did, would you actually listen to me? Is that what youâre telling me? Iâm going to hold you to that! Right this minute. Iâll say it all. Donât plug your earsâlisten to me!â He grabbed her hands as she was in the process of trying to put her fingers in her ears. He took a breath. He was looking at Maomao, but somehow he seemed almost embarrassed. Finally he managed, âNow listen to me, yâI mean, Maomao! Listen close! I am going to make you my wife!â
It's one heck of a chapter and I suggest you give it a go! The title of the chapter says "A man and a woman play the game" as if to emphasize the very fact that both Jinshi and MaoMao are playing the game.
Jinshi has never confessed his true feelings before this chapter and only implied that he wanted to make MaoMao his wife.
The implications were heavy though on Jinshi's part, and as smart as MaoMao is, anyone would have guessed that MaoMao was one of the candidates for Jinshi's consort. Even the clothes she received (the ones she wore to the banquet) were also provided by Jinshi along with the hairpin. It is never stated outright but seeing as the hairpin was from Jinshi, the clothes are also implied to be the same.
More or less she's always deliberately ignoring the possibility of having anything to do with him, that is more than professional. Some may call it denial, I call it dense. Maybe, to some extent, she herself is not aware of her feelings because she never lets herself feel anything.
Even Suiren pointed it out pretty early in the manga, that maybe it's MaoMao's way of being reserved. We need to keep in mind that MaoMao is an unreliable narrator and it's more of what she does, rather than what she says that makes a difference.
Even in the chapter that I have quoted above, she had every reason to leave Jinshi, she wasn't working for him after all. But she stayed to make tea for him, even after the fact that she had a long day too. She was almost just as exhausted as Jinshi and yet she was there preparing medicinal tea, so that he could get a better sleep.
Maybe she herself is yet to realise just how deep her feelings run. Till vol 12 she seems to have accepted them, but she still is yet to acknowledge their depth. Maybe it's because of her childhood.
It's not a traumatic backstory but MaoMao had a sad childhood nonetheless....
She was raised by her grand uncle and her real father was eccentric, who scared her. Her mother must also appear to be kind of demonic to her, since she was desperate enough to cut MaoMao's Pinky finger and send it to Lahan. So it's safe to say that MaoMao never received proper parental affection. And adding to the fact that, a brothel is not exactly an ideal place for raising a child.... especially when the birth of MaoMao was the one thing that brought the brothel to its knees...even if being born wasn't her choice.
Plus MaoMao stated it herself that when she was a baby, no one would come to sooth her until their work was finished, implying that even if MaoMao and her brothel sisters are close, they are not that close. A mother's love is different and she never received it. No one can love you more than your mother and MaoMao was deprived of that. She soon realised that no one was coming. Life is hard and she has no choice but to face it!
So, she got interested in poison.
Maybe she doesn't love herself or her life as much as she says / pretends she does. She's always like "yeah, I would very much like my head to be with my body" and "if I stay low profile maybe I can survive here" etc but maybe deep down that's not the case. Maybe that's why she loves poison so much. The implications are crazy.
And to break MaoMao's shell, Jinshi has no choice but to be a bit more forceful at times? At least that's how I interpret that choking scene. Jinshi was angry at MaoMao because she deliberately suggested him to marry consort Rishu and danced with Rikuson.
Even if Jinshi never said it outright, he was giving hints the entire time.
But well the tables turned and MaoMao topped him instead, lol (vol 7) and later we even see that our little stray cat has accepted Jinshi and she's ready to be in a relationship with him (vol 12).
Plus she is intrigued by the process of birth (she wants to eat her baby's placenta, it's kind of uggghhh.... but anyways, that MaoMao we're talking about, she's just weird that way)
Maybe not after too long she'll realise that if she has to give birth, she can only have it with Jinshi and no one else.

Found family is such a huge theme in the Apothecary Diaries.
You have Luomen, raising Maomo from a young age, despite her being biologically his grandniece, but raising her anyway.
You have the Madame of the Verdigris House, who is Maomaoâs maternal grandmother, but never tells her. She takes care of Maomao, helps raise her in the brothel the best she can, but tries not to show how fond she is of her.
You have Meimei, Joka, & Pairin, three famous courtesans at the Verdigris House who not only physically raised Maomao in her infancy (an imperfect process, as to be expected when one tries to collectively raise a baby in a brothel), but also breastfed her. These women staunchly refer to themselves as Maomaoâs sisters, despite having been old enough to be her parents themselves.
You have Gyokuyou, who doesnât have a good relationship with her own family, and actively distrusts them. She invests wholly in the women she instates as her ladies-in-waiting, treating them, instead, as her family, and as the only people she truly trusts. Itâs for this reason that she asks for Maomao to return to her service over and over: because she trusts her, she loves her as a member of her own household. She shows defiance and even possessiveness when Jinshiâs involvement keeps Maomao from being her lady-in-waiting permanently, as truly trustworthy people are so hard to find, in her world.
You have Lakan, who adopted his nephew Lahan when Lahanâs own family rejected his genius and his potential for growth. Lakan, in general, tends to take in orphans and young children into his estate as servants, when he can tell they have specific talents that would be wasted when they grew older. One of his hobbies is fostering the talents of these strays he takes into his employ. Even if his motives are grey, he still drastically changes their lives for the better.
You have Chou-u, who Maomao indirectly adopted as her own (even though, age-wise, heâs closer to a brother figure for her). Since heâs lost his memories, Maomao is all he knows as a parental figure. She let him live with her, she tried teaching him medicine like Luomen did for her (even though it didnât resonate with him). And when Maomao spends long stints away from the pleasure district, Chou-u experiences acute separation anxiety, though it slowly improves over time.
You have Ah-Duo, who acted as a surrogate mother to Lishu for both of Lishuâs tenures in the rear palace. Ah-Duo couldnât have a normal relationship with her own child (Jinshi), so she doted on Lishu instead. This was a truly symbiotic relationship for them, as Lishu, for the longest time, had very few people she could trust or rely on as a friend when she was a consort.
And these are just the relationships I can think of at the moment!! The story has so many bonds like this. Itâs one of my absolute favorite aspects of the series, and one that I think Natsu Hyuuga handles incredibly well.

one thing i really appreciate about jinshi's character is how he has NEVER once actually had any intention of succeeding the throne. every time the idea is brought up he immediately detests it. so hes giving maomao as much as he possibly can, even though maomao has many qualms about it due to their difference in social status, but jinshi DOESNT CARE because hes NEVER cared about or wanted the status of crown prince! its been nothing but a burden to him! from his perspective the ONLY thing keeping the two of them apart are outside influences. he has no doubt within himself-- hes horribly down bad, in fact. but unfortunately his stupid JOB is getting in the way of him skipping off into the sunset with his favourite little cat
#jinshi literally maiming himself infront of the emperor and empress: âcan you please fire me so i can marry the girl of my dreamsâ#emperor: âno. now go to the west capital relatively unsupervised with the girl of your dreams andpromise REAL HARD u wont something stupidâ#also not to mention i think maomaos problem isnt that she doesnt want to marry jinshi bc she doesnt care about him-- she cares abt him A LO#which is precisely why shes convinced herself she cant marry him. she wants whats best for him and#she wholeheartedly believes that marrying her is the EXACT OPPOSITE of whats best for him.#like she has. yknow. not the prettiest of backgrounds. growing up in a brothel might do that to you#shes mentioned before- shes basically a commoner. she has her biologicaldad but hes more of a wildcard selfmade man with no real connection#and she doesnt even like him.#but she just CANNOT comprehend that someone would sacrifice so much for her and ask for nothing in return but her company#i just love them a lot your honour.#the apothecary diaries#the apothecary diaries spoilers#for the anime/manga onlies#READ THE LIGHT NOVEL#kusuriya no hitorigoto#kusuriya no hitorigoto spoilers

Mao Mao's real super skill is completly rewriting history
Jinmao is a pairing that makes me go feral because it somehow exists in the text and the subtext at the same time. my girl lives for the plausible deniability. You see she doesn't have any feelings except an interest in medicine - there is nothing else there. NOTHING don't you dare look further. And if she happens to have had a feeling at some point she well rewrite history that it never happened. Let me give you an example. Spoilers for the end of season 1/ the beginning of season 2 under the cut
So Mao Mao has left the Rear Palace and is working as courtesan. She isn't happy about it. Jinshi is super depressed about it. They meet. Mao Mao says: maybe i will take personal customers (i.e. customers she will have sex with). Jinshi answers:
Mao Mao starts with: don't joke and than stops herself:
(SN: Look at his precious, precious face. Oh my poor boy it won't be that easy) and she continues:
(SN: the disappointment!!!! this makes me so happy) Anyway what's important about this exchange is that Jinshi is half joking. He's not being serious and expects a no. It's Mao Mao who says Yes. Jinshi wouldn't have bought Mao Mao if she hadn't told him to do it. Let's see how Mao Mao will describe the incident from now on:
Suddenly. out of the blue Jinshi appears and makes a real good offer Mao Mao can't refuse. From now on we won't mention the conversation that preceded that offer. It didn't happen. It's even more explicit in the Anime where Mao Mao claims at one point that Jinshi tempted her with his strange medicinal herbs... Girl you were down to go with him, with or without medicinal herbs. Stop lying. And this his how it always happens: something romantic or nearly romantic will happen and after that Mao Mao will deny, deny and deny.
It makes me go crazy
#i get why my girlie does it#she is scared of feelings#and especially#of love#there. will. be. no. fingers. send. in. the. mail#not on Mao Maos watch#kusuriya no hitorigoto spoilers#kusuriya no hitorigoto#jinmao#jinshi x mao mao#the apothecary diaries

a flower by any other name would taste as poisonous
A butterfly flaps its wings and a hurricane happens in a far-off place.Â
In this case an old eunuch decides to take a different route from his usual one. It takes him by the Garnet Palace, where heâs just in time to stop a loving attendant from feeding an infant a spoonful of honey. Sufficiently warned, the attendant never bears the crushing weight of guilt for the rest of her life.Â
The infant still dies though. Itâs nothing surprising. Infants before a certain age would always be vulnerable and susceptible to natural illnesses. It is no oneâs fault.Â
If the child still died though, what did this change? Surprisingly, a lot.Â
Eight years later a boy is crying after having a favorite toy taken from him once again.Â
A girl, merely a year younger than him, asks him in a dispassionate tone where it hurts.Â
Startled, the boy stops crying. Eyes shining, he looks at this girl who resembles a wood sorrel and decides sheâs his new favorite.Â
How is it that those two seemingly random encounters could lead to this particular scene, one resembling a painting?
On one side, an existence like a celestial nymph, voice of sweet honey, a beauty that could topple nations if he so wished.
One would think that no one could compare, and yet the beauty on the other side was not overshadowed. She was a vision no less stunning for she was once known as a top courtesan of the pleasure district.Â
It was perhaps fortunate that no one was a witness to this display for no one could hope to count how many hapless victims would be felled by such visions of loveliness.Â
As to what these beauties were doing, no one could have guessed for in between them stood a single Go board.
tap
tap
âI must admit that while I was expecting a visit from his Imperial highness soon, I didnât think it would be for this.â
The celestial nymph flushed.Â
âApologies for taking some of your precious time, Feng Xian-dono.â
tap
tap
The unfettered beauty took her time deciding her next move. The man who was also called Jinshi did not fool himself into thinking it was because he was a worthy opponent. Although he was used to using his excellent looks as a weapon, why is it that before this woman he felt as if he were merely a mouse being played with? A finely sculpted brow conveyed enough with one gesture. He felt as if he were playing two games at the same time.
âAnd? What is so important that the Prince of the Moon felt the need to risk Lakanâs wrath to come here? Why, you even roped Lahan into this plan of yours.â The cold beauty didnât smile but he had a sense that she was amused.
Jinshi wondered. Did he rope Lahan or did that miser rope him? It didnât matter. Shaking his head, he hoped he was equally composed when he answered, âI must admit it was that esteemed personageâs recommendation that sent me your way. Aside from him, only you could fight on equal ground with our honored strategist.â
tap
tap
Seemingly bored but only just, such that she could not be accused of disrespecting him, his opponent continued her queries, âAnd? Surely, you donât hope to best that girl at a game of Go? She has utterly no interest at the game. Itâs a wonder if she takes after us at all. I often wonder how she came to be so uncute, though of course Lakan would disagree.â
Jinshi would as well. Or to be more accurate, he both agreed and disagreed. While that girl was often distant, on the whole he could not help but find her adorable.
And from the shadow of a smile he could spy on his opponentâs face, he gathered that she was much the same, and could only dote on her daughter in this roundabout way. Although parent and child both claimed no similarity, he thought in this manner you could not doubt their familial tie.
Likewise with her father, though she only had disdain for the man (not that it would stop that eccentricâs entreaties to be called Papa from happening, thought Jinshi with a shiver). Heâll leave it up to Gaoshun to commiserate.Â
That wary cat only showed affection for her honored grand uncle. In much the same way, as much as she protested, she and her sire were a lot alike. There was also their utter disinterest in anyone ordinary and unexceptional.
Like him.
Any other family would have accepted just by virtue of who he was. But it mattered not to this particular family who cared not for prestige or power. This family was content to keep to itself and occupied with its membersâ various obsessions. Rather than consider it an honor to be connected to the noble line of the rulers of this nation, Jinshi thought that Lakan rather saw him as some annoying fly.Â
And for that annoying fly to not only buzz around his beloved daughter but also to dare be in the proximity of his beloved wife, the only two people that eccentric fawned over and adored with all his heart, ah surely this was a perilous gamble indeed.Â
But for an ordinary person like Jinshi, no Ka Zui Getsu, this was the only thing he could do.
Ironic that when he wanted it most, he could not rely on this excellent appearance of his, the only thing extraordinary about him. This family cared not a whit for that. At first he had wondered why that apothecary continued to be unaffected by him, but to have someone like this for a mother, he realizes she must have already been bored by the sight. (She had actually scoffed at him after they had seen each other once again in the rear palace.)
It left him scrambling, but also strangely relieved.Â
âItâs not that I want to best her. At most I hope to be on equal footing.â Slightly abashed, he shakes his head. âIn truth, it is our honored strategist whom I wish to have a match with. Though it may be impossible, the Sage tells me my best hope lie with the only person to have bested the Grand Commandant more times than even him.âÂ
Seemingly intrigued if the slight lifting of one brow indicated such, the once courtesan inquired, âOh? And to what end if I may ask?â
How to answer.
Grappling with something in himself, Jinshi finally admitted, âMerely to be acknowledged, I suppose. To be seen and recognized.â
To be accepted.Â
By whom, his companion seemed content not to ask if the curl of her mouth was any indication.
Maomao had often complained (though she would deny it with a blank look if asked) in a bland tone that she thought she must surely be adopted by the one she called father, for surely she had no resemblance to this beauty in front of him. Chicken bones she called herself. (Incidentally, she was adamant that she was not ugly enough to be related to the fox. She was, in her own view, perfectly normal. Jinshi almost spat out his tea upon hearing this if only it wasnât unbefitting his station.)Â
But seeing what could pass for an amused look on this normally expressionless face, Jinshi for the first time in front of another great beauty, blushed for he could only see traces of the one he yearned for in this visage.Â
Truly, they were mother and daughter indeed.Â
He was caught in a daydream of a scene years into the future, with Maomao dressed in such finery, of when he could finally lavish her with all his attentions as he pleased.Â
tap
tap
The harsh clack of the Go stones brought him back from his musings and his attention onto the board. Upon seeing how he was completely dominated, he let out a deep sigh.Â
âA long way to go, your highness.â
As if echoing his thoughts, an imperious voice declared his resounding defeat. If not for the twinkle in her eye he could detect, he would no doubt feel as if he was not even worth the heel of her shoe, never mind that he was the current Imperial heir. Distantly, he wonders if this was the sight that bewitched and entrapped that eccentric so long ago.Â
Privately laughing at his own folly, he decides he was no better for it was the same look from that tiny wood sorrel that sealed his fate. Flowers could heal, but they could also be poisonous. He knew better than most. No matter. Regardless of the outcome, he would swallow her whole.
Truly there was a long way to go before he could turn that dream into anything close to reality. He doesnât mind tasting defeat again and again for the chance of victory one day.Â
Once more, he resets the board.
notes:
Jinshi and the Imperial brother are still switched at birth so he still doesnât know who he really is.
The imperial brother still dies in infancy but not so soon after his birth. Since Luomen manages to stop the honey incident, the tragedy with Aduoâs head maidservant doesnât happen later on. He doesnât get punished nor does he get driven out.
Because he doesnât get driven out, Lakan isnât pressured into a military expedition to reclaim the honor of the family. He manages to redeem Feng Xian immediately.
Lakan still somehow ends up the head since his younger brother doesnât really see himself suited to the position. He still ends up taking the headship from his father probably because Feng Xian was insulted or something and he wants to spoil her. His father and sister-in-law probably still end up leaving on their own like in the original timeline rather than being driven away. One way or another, Maomao, Rahan and Rahan-nii end up being raised together.
Maomao is still the same. Sure, sheâs raised as a noble lady but she still spends half of her life at the pleasure district with Feng Xian, her sisters and penny-pinching granny. I doubt Lakan would stop them since this isnât a conventional family after all.
Luomen probably sneaks in town undercover to still be an apothecary for those who might need it most, with Maomao accompanying him.
Since Maomao is raised as a noble, one way or another she ends up as Jinshiâs playmate. Of course, Jinshi still ends up attached. And of course Lakan puts a stop to it as soon as he can. It doesnât have anything to do with any political maneuvering. Heâs just an overprotective papa.
Maomao still ends up in the rear palace, this time as Luomenâs apprentice so of course she ends up crossing paths with Jinshi once again when theyâre older.
And so the adventures of the young prince and apothecary still continue, fates still intertwined.

Where can I read "Kusuriya no Hitorigoto" Light Novel?
Since a lot of you have been asking this question lately, here is everything you need to know in brief...
What is a Web Novel (WN) and Light Novel (LN)?
A WN is basically weekly chapters released by the main author on a weekly basis. You can find it on a lot of Japanese sites. Some amazing people also translate them on a regular basis and post those chapters. LN is a compilation of WN chapters. A number of Chapters from the WN are taken, translated, properly rewritten and edited to publish a final LN. It has a few illustrations as well like the one you can see below...
Manga, Light Novel and Anime
Basically, the LN is taken and illustrated by an artist and we call it a manga. And when the manga has reached a certain number of Chapters, and gained a lot of popularity, it is converted into an anime. So that's the flow of things. We have
WN -> LN -> Manga -> Anime
I think that clears up a lot of misunderstandings. Firstly, the WN is published on a weekly basis, some chapters from WN are taken and translated properly to make a LN. The LN is illustrated by an artist to make the manga and the manga is generally adapted to make the anime.
In case of 'Kusuriya no Hitorigoto' or 'The Apothecary Diaries', the anime is doing a great job of adapting the overall story because not only are they properly animating every scene from the manga but also adding their own scenes from the LN.
Where can I read WN, LN and Manga?
WNs are the hardest to find, since they are released on a weekly basis by the Japanese author. They are written in Japanese and a few fans translate them for everyone. You can find it here...
(They have translated chapters of vol 10, 11 and 12)
The LN has reached until vol 9 and vol 10 is scheduled to release in Jan 2024. Currently, there is no source where you can find it for free (not that I know of, because even I have purchased the e book from Amazon) though the first few pages are available to read for free! So you can check them out!
Where did the Anime, Manga left off?
The Manga has reached ch 68. If you want to start reading the light novel from where the manga left off, you can start reading from vol 4, chapter 4.
The Anime has released ep 12 and it has covered manga material till ch 20, if you want to read manga after finishing the anime.
If you have any other questions regarding the LN, WN, Anime or Manga, feel free to ask!

Thoughts on Apothecary diaries ep 5
I've been thinking about the recent episode of the Apothecary diaries, about the hairpin scene specifically
I looked up what it means when someone gives you an hairpin in ancient China, because I was a bit confused about what it fully represented and it seems hair pins can be used as a love token or a promise of love (If I'm wrong, just let me know! )
And, I'm not a manga reader or novel reader(?), so I don't know what's going to happen next chapter (also please don't spoil me lol) but I feel like there's a bit more to it besides of Jinshi starting to catch romantic feelings for Maomao
I feel like he may have given her the hairpin also so that the emperor knows that she's not available if he sees her with the new make up and dress up đ¤
I mean, given what they were just talking about before he gave her the hair pin, that Maomao had been wearing freckles make up this whole time to protect herself from being assaulted in the past, (if I should explain it a bit more, to make herself look less pretty in the eyes of men who may want to attack or kidnap her) and the fact that she kept wearing it even inside the palace.
we know that servants can become concubines as well, although may not become high rank, and the emperor has already taken notice of Maomao due to her apothecary knowledge, so I feel like it may not be impossible if he may want to make her a concubine if he sees her with the new make up and outfit ?? (unless I'm missing something, maybe this doesn't apply for ladies in waiting of other concubines, not sure, I'm not all 100% sure of my own theory lol)
So I feel like maybe Jinshi gave her the hairpin, as a way to protect her from this possibility.
I believe too that he's just catching feelings for her too though, it could be also just simple as that lol
But well, just thought I'd share my thoughts of that, can't wait to find out if I'm right or utterly wrong in next episode! đ
