Plot Holes in High and Low We Need to Discuss
Tumblr media
@tiredlittlewriter always gassing me up 🤭🫶🏼 @cheshirecatuniverse @mrskenpachizaraki @books-n-guns
Thank you so much everyone tagged for staying up and talking about the movies with me last night😂❤
Trigger warnings before you start reading, this ramble posts contains spoilers for the movies, cuss words, mentions of character d3aths, mention of SA that happens to a character, and other violence and cr!me associated with the H&L franchise. Please don't read if you do not want to see any of these.
Anywaysssas as you can tell by the title of this post and this screenshot, we are talking about plot holes in the High and Low franchise that we need to talk about because they BUG THE SHIT OUT OF ME.
I would like to start by saying that I do love this franchise, it is my everything. It's not like I have anything bad to say about it, I love it as it is, but some of the stuff within the franchise definitely could've been more thought out. It could've been worse! So I am thankful it wasn't bad but there are some things I wish the writing team did a little differently.
Also, I do attribute a lot of the plot holes to 1) the creators not being entirely sure whether or not they would get a green light on more movies, 2) trying to make sure the movies made money (it's a business unfortunately and not just art), and 3) High and Low is a multi-media franchise so some stuff is probably explained in the mangas, TV shows, games, etc. I will contradict myself and discuss this more in detail as we keep going.
These are in no particular order, just what comes to mind first
S.W.O.R.D Era
1)Noboru and Miho's story
I have beef with whoever on the H&L writing team thought that condensing the 2 seasons of Story of S.W.O.R.D into Road to High & Low was a good idea. "It's both seasons condensed into one movie" THAT'S A FUCKIN LIE. So much of what is in the shows is cut out from the movie.
Tell me why I learned here on Tumblr that Noboru actually spent a while in a coma in the hospital after getting body slammed by a Kuryu car? And then Cobra and Yamato had to do the "IF YOU DIE I'M GONNA BE SO MAD AT YOU" speech you always see in Asian dramas to get Noboru to wake up?!
And tell me why I learned from a fanfic on Wattpad that Miho isn't dead?! She literally comes to visit Noboru while he's in the hospital. Road to High & Low frames the situation to make it look like Noboru goes to beat up Miho's SA perpetrators after he finds he d3ad in her apartment. Then when I brought this up a couple weeks ago the Discord besties told me she broke up with him through a letter😭 A LETTER GIRL?! HE WENT THROUGH ALL THAT FOR YOU! IF I WAS YOU I WOULD'VE KEPT HIM. NOBORU. GIVE ME YOUR HAND IN MARRIAGE PLEASE GOOD SIR💍 (I'm completely joking I don't think anyone is entitled to another person's feelings, love, affection, etc. I'm just delusional because I love Noboru and Keita Machida)
Then I learned last night from Discord that Miho needs serious therapy because she was working for Doubt and it was addressed in season 2 of the show. Like HUUUH?! WHAT DO YOU MEAN?!
I do think the storyline between them as a couple and their stories individually definitely could've been explored and explained more. It was probably explained better in the show than RTH&L but I don't have access to the show so idk... which brings me to my first contradiction!
LDH AND EXILE TRIBE PLEASE MAKE YOUR MEDIA MORE ACCESIBLE GOSH. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SUB IT THAT'S FINE AT LEAST MAKE IT EASIER TO FIND SO THAT WE CAN GET FAN SUBS OR I CAN JUST WATCH THE RAW FOOTAGE AND PRETEND I KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING. There's so many films like the 2 DTC films, the Mighty Warriors film, the shows, even the manga that a lot of us don't have access to😭 Yes this franchise is multi-media but at least make the media accessible😭
2) Mighty Warriors working with Doubt
In the first and second High & Low movie MW and Doubt work together... AND THAT LITERALLY DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE. Last I checked Mighty Warriors don't fuck with tr@ffickers in general so I don't even know why this happened.
And last I checked, MW rescued Sarah from Doubt so why would they work with Doubt when one of their members was literally a Doubt victim? That just doesn't make sense to me. Like yes the MW tend to just take up whatever whack-ass jobs for money they can get considering they fought with literal children (Oya and Rude Boys. I'm like 99.9% sure the Rude Boys members were all 16-19 and that is the age of children. Smoky might've been 20-22 which is not exactly a child but he's still young compared to the MW who were all mercenaries and in the military before they were musical bandits alluding to the fact they are older) but you would think that people who claim to have a club that is a utopia with music that is supposed to impact people positively and save their lives just like music saved the MW members' lives, they would have more moral and standards than to work with Doubt.... but I digress.
3) The alliance with a foreign mafia
This one I can kind of understand but also can't.
I understand that MW take up whatever job they can to make money. It's said directly multiple times in the movies by a MW member that there is no use doing a job for someone without getting paid so they do a lot of stuff just for the money. I also understand Doubt take whatever job pays them but also benefits their tr@fficking business. Hence why they took this job because not only were they getting paid by Lee who runs the Korean mafia but they could kidnap women in the S.W.O.R.D district which worked in their favor.
What I can't understand though is how this alliance even came to be. Hear me out. MW and Doubt will probably do whatever to get money, but where did the trust come from? Like how did they trust that a foreign mafia of all people would uphold their deal and pay them? Was it because Kohaku was made the front-man/face of the plan? Like did they believe that it would be fine because Kohaku was the one "leading" even though it seemed like Lee was pulling a lot of the strings? DOES KOHAKU EVEN HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO BE PAYING EVERYONE?! I SWEAR EVERY TIME WE SEE HIM THAT MAN IS JUST LAYING ON A SOFA IN A JUNKYARD! WDYM DOUBT AND MIGHTY WARRIORS BELIEVED THIS MAN WAS THE ONE WHO WAS GONNA GIVE THEM MONEY?!
4) Who the fuck are Bulge? And what happened to Kuryu?
In End of Sky, we learn that Bulge are interested in the fight between Doubt, Prison Gang, and White Rascals and would sponsor Prison Gang. That's why the scene where we see Jesse fighting with another prisoner, after he kicks him down the guards tell Jesse that Bulge wants to see him to. This is why Jesse and Prison Gang are released early. When Jesse goes back to Funk Jungle he's asking if Mighty want to join but Ice says that they are gonna focus on promoting Funk Jungle, but like he's a liar they show up at the fight anyways lol.
A the end of Final Mission, the movie closes off with a dramatic shot of Mighty Warriors and a typed out message stating "Hello, everyone. This is Bulge. The takeover plan has begun." We never get an explanation of who they are, what they do, etc. I did learn from Ryu's Wiki Fandom page however that "It is presumed that he and Bulge orchestrated the fall of Kuryu Group. In the music video of the MIghty Warriors' new song "Warriors Anthem", it is revealed that he took over Kuryu as the leader after the events of Final Mission, and having Mighty Warriors occupy the remaining 8 heads of Kuryu."
So who exactly are Bulge? How are they powerful enough to be able to take down all of the original Kuryu members who have been seen as indestructible the whole franchise? Why did they allow Ryu to be the new leader?
After Final Mission, the next media pieces that were released were the DTC show and DTC movie, and then we moved into The Worst era with High&Low: The Worst Episode 0 along with the two Worst movies that followed.
I had made the assumption that around the start of the Worst era the creators probably wanted to integrate more of Jr.Exile into the franchise because of their 1) popularity and 2) new stories. The popularity of Exile members like Hokuto and Kazuma would probably bring in more viewership which does good on the numbers and money side because as I said above, unfortunately this is also a business not just art. The H&L creators probably also needed new stories to follow because they can't keep adding to S.W.O.R.D
Vis said that they think the Mighty Warriors were probably dropped because we haven't seen anything from them since the third movie, but Taiga also brought up how the new Mighty Warriors music video was also dropped right around the time the most recent movie Worst X was released. This probably means they are trying to figure out the story within S.W.O.R.D behind the scenes and it's just taking a while to do the world building. Tired also brought up a good point that considering most of the actors in H&L are also Exile members, they have to also continue their jobs as artists so tours, making music, schedules, etc. are probably also clashing with filming and working on High and Low.
Hopefully that is the case and we see more because I have too many questions and no answers.
5) Wtf happened to Rude Boys, Nameless City, and Nikaido?
If you read my fics, you know that when I write about Nameless City after Smoky's passing, I write about how the Rude Boys, Lala, and Eri go and visit Smoky's grave all the time. About a month ago the besties in the Discord made it known to me that Smoky's gravesite and like 3/4 of Nameless City was completely blown up. I was like 😧when I read those messages because it wasn't even like a head-canon thing I genuinely thought that only a small section of Nameless City was blown up so we were fine BUT APPARENTLY WE AREN'T FINE. So what does this mean for the Nameless City residents?
Did they get government housing to stay in while they got tested for the disease from the pollution? Did the residents get released back into Nameless City after the whole casino project exposure? If they were released back into Nameless City, are they all just cramming into that little 1/4 of Nameless City that wasn't blown up?
What happened to Rude Boys afterwards? Are they all back in Nameless City? Or did they move to a different area? Where would they go though? Little Asia? Did Eri get adopted afterwards? Are they finding ways to make money like how they mined the crystal to get money to rebuild Nameless City? Do they even want to return to Nameless City considering the pollution from the toxic waste was causing the disease that killed their leader?
Wtf happened to Nikaido/Cain? Is he finally happy now that he purged his past? Was purging his past and killing his brother worth it? If Kuryu was overthrown and taken over by Mighty Warriors, what does that mean for Nikaido? Is he working for them? Was purging his past worth anything if he didn't even gain anything from it because MW took over Kuryu? Again, so many questions and no answers😭
6) Give us a more clear timeline
This isn't a plot hole, just something I wish the creators would do is give us a clearer timeline. We're never given any clear timeline of how much time has past between each movie or even how much time is between the S.W.O.R.D and Worst era. I'm always trying to calculate the timeline or everyone's ages based off of the only two characters we get ages for and Noboru's school timeline.
The only two characters in the whole franchise that we get ages for are Chiharu and Seki. At the start of the series we know that Chiharu is 20 because when he joins Sannoh, in the scene at the bar Cobra offers him a drink but takes it back and says "wait but aren't you underaged?" to which Chiharu replies that he is 20 (which is the legal adult age in Japan) and Tettsu makes fun of him for still being in high school as an adult (in good fun of course not in a mean way).
When we first are introduced to Oya, the narrator tells us that Seki is the oldest part-timer student there at age 25.
Noboru, Yamato, and Cobra were high schoolers while Mugen was still active. This is deduced by the scene where Yamato drops Noboru off in front of the school for the day he takes his exam, then when he opens up his college acceptance letter with them. I'm assuming Yamato and Cobra dropped out to be apart of Mugen and take care of their parents' shops. Then, we see when Noboru starts college but doesn't make it super far into his bachelors degree after getting sent to jail. We don't get to see how long he was in jail for, just that he was released early because Kuryu paid to get him out early.
I always use these ages and Noboru's vague school timeline to try and figure out the character's ages and shit but they are just estimates because we never get clear timelines from the creators. Like why couldn't they at least tell us how much time passed between the end of Final Mission and the start of The Worst?!😭anyways.... onto the next thing
The Worst Era (mainly X)
Like I said in the screenshot, The Worst isn't my favorite movie out of the franchise but I think it was the best executed in terms of plot out of all the movies. The plot was clear, very concise, and relatively had no plot holes. (I haven't seen The Worst Episode 0 so if there is something that is missing plot wise please let me know)
It was fun to see the cross with Housen and the themes and messages we got from not only the plot but also from each character were all really good too. It was a solid movie, no complaints.
The Worst X however... I have questions. It's not to say it wasn't good, I still liked it and obviously it was good considering I watched it with no context and it got me into the whole H&L universe, but I feel like it fell a bit short. There was more the writers could've done for not only plot development but character development.
1)How did that 3 school alliance actually even start?
From the movies, it seems like Kohei Amagai is well known as "the annoying son of the Amagai group". Like EVERYONE knows him and knows he throws around money to get people to work for him. And like yeah, we see when he is able to take control of the school with the beige uniforms because Senomon, Kamasaka, and Ebara are quite literally beating the shit out of them, but how did Senomon get Kamasaka and Ebara to cooperate?
I refuse to believe that Amagai was able to get Kamasaka who fight with weapons like brass knuckles and metal rods and Ebara who are all literal gym bros to join his stupid ass plan with just money. As dumb as I think boys are I don't think Reiji, Ghandi, Shoji, Raijin, or Fujin are actually dumb enough to join an alliance for money. Even if this alliance did win and take over Oya, what would they have done with each other afterwards? Those dudes have so much pride we all know that there is NO WAY they would all continue working under Amagai. Amagai is also stupid as hell if he thought he could be at the top without someone from Kamasaka or Ebara trying to overthrow him if he had taken down Oya like Kohei.... be fuckin for real bitch.
I need more of an explanation to this like someone from the H&L writing room please sit down with me and answer my questions so I can publish it in an interview for all of us we need answers.
2) What the fuck is the story behind Todoroki and the dudes from Ebara?
The whole time Fujin and Raijin are running around screaming about how they're gonna crush Todoroki and I literally sit there like
👁️👄👁️Why? No matter how many times I watch the movies because we never get an explanation! Idk was this in the show? Someone please tell me.
And like the scene after Todoroki beats up Fujin and Raijin, Shoji goes "you're different now" and I'm always like "Different? DIFFERENT HOW?! DON'T BE SHY SHARE WITH THE CLASS PLEASE"
Todoroki responds with something along the lines of "now I have friends to protect" which is so wholesome I love that, but what is the detailed history of him and the guys from Ebara? We never get that explained to us. I remember reading somewhere that Todoroki trained hard to beat his bullies and because he got so strong that's why he always tried to fight for the leader position because he believed he could beat Murayama. I also saw a clip on Youtube where when Murayama is fighting with Todoroki, he sees his old self in Todoroki who is being reckless which probably adds to Todoroki's character development.
Did the guys from Ebara bully Todoroki? Were they old friends who fell apart? Did they just have a bad run in when Todoroki was being a little shit and fought but now hold a grudge because they are teenagers with a lot of pride and anger issues and it's not that deep? Idk🤷‍♀️The thing that bugs me is the fact that their feud was added a solid amount to the plot and why Ebara joined then dropped the alliance so I don't know why we didn't get at least a vague explanation of who these characters are to each other.
3) Questions and what I want to see next movie
This obviously isn't plot holes but just some questions I have and what I want to see in the next installments of the franchise.
Why were these high schoolers doing THE FUCKIN MOST to see who was stronger?! The first time I watched I was so confused because why was this movie serious but also so unserious?! They did not need to be doing all that.
Why didn't Amagai get in any trouble for anything?! Is it because he has money?! Like how did this man commit literal crime and everyone was like okei. He literally kidnapped Tsukasa and tortured him for like half a day and 1 night...
How did Tsukasa not die?! The was literally beat over the head with a metal pipe, kidnapped, tied up, tortured, and then dropped from a balcony. I digress, he probably has plot armor as Sun calls it because how did he not die or at least end up in the hospital for a long time.
I want to see the movies circle back to the S.W.O.R.D plotline so it would be really cool if Amagai's little plan was part of a larger plan to break down the peace in S.W.O.R.D. It wouldn't be the first time the adults used kids to push their agenda. Kuryu originally wanted to use Murayama to tear down the peace in S.W.O.R.D because he used to look up to the man who was the head of Iemura but because he chose not to do it, they went after Noboru.
Maybe MW are thriving as the new heads of Kuryu so someone on the outside is trying to take over and Amagai's family is apart of that. Or maybe his family is trying to gain favor from Mighty and are working for them. Idk but it would be cool if we circle back to S.W.O.R.D and see the new Oya characters have to integrate into the S.W.O.R.D world also.
I also want to see a segment of how Rude Boys and Oya adjust to their new leaders.
I want to see what happened to the rest of S.W.O.R.D after the third movie. We saw Oya in The Worst era but what happened to everyone else? Which I also know these are probably kind of far fetched considering the Exile Tribe member who played Rocky is retired from the entertainment industry now... but a girl can dream I guess.
You made it to the end! Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to read this big rant. This wasn't proof read and is kind of everywhere but thank you for reading it anyways! ❤️

Tumblr media
Is the entire world crumbling or is it just her gilded cage closing in tighter around her? Is the noose around her neck that’s stopping her breath real or all in her head? Is she numb or feeling too much all at once that she can’t discern the emotions?
Ryuka doesn’t have the answers to any of these questions.
Standing in the bathroom, she can’t breathe. There’s a knot in her throat. Her legs feel like jelly, it’s like she could collapse at any second. Her hands drop forward onto the bathroom counter on either side of the sink, it’s the only way she can stay standing up. Her hands are trembling, she presses them flat against the cold counter as if it could help steady her.
She stares at herself in the mirror. There’s a reddening mark across her cheek, it’s the shape of her father’s hand. After talking back to him, she should have expected it. When her father had a plan in mind, she wasn’t going to dissuade him, even if it had to do with her own life.
It’s hard to focus. Her mind is running a hundred miles a second, every thought flies passed too quick to understand, her vision blurs. She can barely see the red of the mark anymore. Her visage is a blur of paleness; her skin, her hair; her eyes are the only dark things, blown wide and flickering around as she tries to concentrate. Her breath comes out in short quick puffs.
Quick as a flash, her hand fumbles into the nearby drawer. She feels around for the coolness of metal and then -
Snip.
A chunk of pale hair falls to the ground by her feet.
She freezes. Her vision slowly clears. The newly short strands curl against her cheek. A small hysterical laugh escapes her. She gathers another chunk of hair into her hand, lifts the scissors, and snips through it. Again and again, she cuts through strands of her long pale hair until she’s left with a short choppy bob.
She runs her fingers through the sharp ends. It’s shorter than she’s ever had it. Her father had always made her wear her hair long, she’d never done more than trim it.
A thought passes the forefront of her mind: he’d hate it.
She laughs - a choked, tear-y sound - and puts the scissors down.
Getting out of here. It’s her only option.
She refuses to marry Ryu, but her father would force it. Just another choice stolen right out of her hands. She’d never be able to escape Kuryu if she stayed; she’d go from the serving girl to being a wife, expected to be a mother for the next generation of Kuryu.
When would she have a chance like this again?
Freedom is a tree outside the bathroom window. Tall with wide branches and just close enough that she could reach it if she jumped. It’s dangerous, she knows, but she’d take the risk of injury over staying here. Maybe if she was ‘damaged’, Ryu wouldn’t want her; her father wouldn’t be able to force an arrangement with a damaged daughter.
She pushes the window open. It’s quite a way down to the ground from the second story. For a moment, her nerves get the better of her and her fingers tighten on the windowsill. Could she really jump far enough? Would the branches really hold her weight?
Roughly shaking her head, she steels herself.
She can’t stay here. She can’t live like this anymore.
Pushing away from the window, she spins on her heel to turn the bath tap on. Hopefully the sound will be enough to deceive the guards waiting outside into thinking she was still here; hopefully it would give her enough time to get far away before they realise she’s gone.
Turning back to the window, she takes a breath. It’s now or never. She climbs up onto the windowsill, steadying her hand against the side. She sways, feeling the cool night breeze against her skin.
Another deep breath, then she leaps.
The landing is hardly graceful. Her foot slips, almost sending her plummeting. The branch digs into her body and is rough against her skin as she grips to it. It takes a second to realise that she’s landed safely and she exhales a relieved sigh.
Slowly, she inches her way closer to the tree trunk where the branches were thicker. When she reaches it, she carefully drops her feet down to the next branch. It’s a slow process, but she gets closer to the ground until she’s reaching the sparser lower branches. There’s still a bit of a drop.
Her foot lands on the next branch and she barely has the chance to react with more than a gasp as she feels it crack. Then she’s falling. Twisting over in the air, she only succeeds in landing roughly on her extended arm, thankfully cushioning her forehead before it hits the ground. She groans quietly, then quickly sits up, looking around to see if anyone had noticed her.
A beat passes and she’s not being wretched back into the house by her father or one of his men, so she breathes out a sigh of relief, her head hanging.
Her wrist aches with a dull pain. She can’t even put much pressure on it to help her stand up without biting back a grunt of pain. She dusts herself off, doing her best to clear dirt and fallen leaves off her yukata.
With one last glance towards her childhood home, she turns towards the street and hurries away.
She imagines she must look strange. Her uneven and choppy pale hair paired with her equally pale yukata and her utter lack of shoes. Perhaps she even looks ghostly, a phantom in the night, strolling the nearing-empty streets.
It’s early evening. The people who are out avoid even looking at her, let alone talking to her. She doesn’t look at them either, just keeps moving forward.
She’s never been out at this time - or any time. Her father had always kept her locked up. She’s never been allowed outside for more than minutes, the moments between hoping out of the car and heading inside whatever building her father is ushering her to.
It’s freeing. Even if the breeze is cold and the rough ground digs into the delicate soles of her bare feet.
Thoughts run wildly around her head. She’s really left it all behind. Her entire life. Everything she’s ever known. Returning now would land her with punishment for daring to even attempt running away.
So she keeps walking.
It’s different, actually being outside. It’s not like the maps on a screen or in a book. She kind of knows what direction she’s going in, but it’s slow going as she tries to piece places together. Turning down streets, she tries to figure out exactly where she is and which way will take her where she wants to go.
The SWORD district, it’s the only place Ryuka can think to go. It’s where Hyuga is. He’s the only person she knew to escape Kuryu before her. Well, he and his family were kicked out, but it’s as much of an escape as anything.
He’d help her - or she hopes so. He knew her, knew what she’d been through. He’d understand.
A pang of worry suddenly sets in her chest. What if he didn’t help her? What if he turned her away? What would she do then? Would she end up in Nameless City or would they turn her away too if they discovered who she was?
She had no money, she had nothing at all. Left to herself, her father would no doubt find her within days. She’d be dragged back to that place, forced into a wedding she didn’t want.
She shakes it off. She’d just have to convince Hyuga.
It’s a calm night for Daruma Ikka. Nearly all of the other members had gone off for the night. It’s already getting close to dawn. Hyuga’s holed himself up inside, probably smoking or sleeping; which leaves Kato, Ukyo and Sakyo out on the porch by themselves, passing cigarettes.
Ukyo is complaining about something and Sakyo is arguing back and Kato is only half-listening, relaxed back against a post, breathing in the night air as he dozes.
A crinkle of leaves breaks him out of his peaceful state and he’s quickly on alert, sitting up straighter. What he spots approaching the Daruma house is not what he’s expecting.
It’s a girl. Petite, no more than a bit over five-feet, with choppy short white-blonde hair. She’s wearing a white, slightly dirty, yukata and has no shoes. Kato’s eyes pause at her feet. They’re dirty and bleeding, dragging with each step as she stumbles along.
Just how long had she been walking for? And from where?
Her head slowly lifts and he gets a look at her face. She’s … almost familiar, in a way. It takes Kato a few seconds as she gets a few steps closer, then he’s hopping to his feet.
“Ryuka?” He questions, his confusion turning quickly into concern as he heads across the yard to her.
Minamoto Ryuka. He hadn’t seen her since she was a little girl, back when the Hyuga brothers were still a part of Kuryu. Even then, she was usually hidden away by her father. As the youngest Kuryu kids, she and Hyuga had often gotten saddled together to stay out of the adults’ business. While Kato had to watch over Hyuga, Minamoto often assigned one of his assassins to Ryuka, she was rarely alone. Kato had never gotten along with any of Minamoto’s men.
Her hair’s shorter now, and she’s quite a few years older, but it’s definitely her. He takes her carefully by the arm and she looks up at him. Her eyes are sunken and she’s clearly exhausted, there’s a slight red bruising on her cheek that makes Kato tense.
“What are you doing here?” He asks.
“I have to see Norihisa,” she says, her soft voice rasping.
“Yeah. Yeah, come on.”
He gathers her small frame against his side, leading her up to the door. Ukyo and Sakyo stare at them confused, Sakyo motions at her with his cigarette, opening his mouth to say something.
“I’ll explain later,” Kato cuts in before either can speak.
He passes by them, pushing open the heavy door and guiding Ryuka inside. Her steps are slow, marking up the floor with bloodied footprints. He’d have to check her over later, find out the worst of the damage. Maybe some of the girls had clothes left around here that she could borrow.
“Hyuga.”
Kato’s hand is a warm weight in the middle of her upper back, guiding her along. He smells slightly of cigarette smoke, enough to make her nose twitch. She’s too tired to care though. Her feet ache and are sticky with blood, her arm is still throbbing dully and she hugs it against her stomach. Her vision is a little blurry, passed exhausted, but it quickly focuses on Hyuga as he comes into view.
He looks the same. Older, his hair a little longer, but overall still as ragged. The same Norihisa who’d lie and say that he ‘put up’ with her when she was young, but was kind enough to answer all the annoying childish questions she’d had, and pat her hair whenever she was upset over her father bring cruel and threaten to ‘take him down’ for her.
Hyuga barely has a chance to sit up fully before Ryuka is bursting into tears and rushing towards him, dropping painfully to her knees and grabbing his arms, slumping towards him. He jolts in surprise, glancing over her pale crown towards Kato, who shrugs, equally confused about why she was here.
“Ryuko?” He starts.
It’s an old nickname. A tease. ‘Baby dragon’.
“Don’t call me that,” she chokes out through sobs, still clinging to him. She forces the crying back with a deep shaking breath, then swipes a hand over her face, the other still gripping his sleeve. “Please help me. I can’t go home.”
His brows crease in concern, staring at her as she looks up at him, her teary eyes desperate. He’d always known Minamoto was a bastard of a man, but what had he done that was the final straw? What finally forced Ryuka into running away? For a moment, his eyes settle on the bruise on her tear streaked face, and he frowns. He’s not surprised - it wasn’t uncommon for Minamoto to raise a hand to his daughter, even when she was young - but it still bothers him.
Flipping his hand, he squeezes her arm, up by her elbow.
“Tell me what happened.”

My man Onocha acknowledging / confirming (he even tagged it with Kirinji) that this pose was chosen intentionally and that it has something to do with the other character he plays in modern H&L. I swear, if he really plays Kirinji's ancestor in this (as I predicted), I will lose my mind. Also, the meaning of his name in this is really something. 颯斗 (read: Hayato): sound of the wind, earth, breeze, refreshing, space, Big Dipper (don't get me started on the mythology behind that since the meaning can reach from chasing/hunting, leading, refreshing, to death and mourning) His modern character is キリンジ (Kirinji) which can be read as child prodigy. So far he is on the side of the good guys, but given the implications he is either an unhinged fighting gremlin, maybe a traitor(?), but most likely a future dragon (they are heavily teasing the dragons (Kuryu) in the promotion).

I’ve had a post featuring my thoughts on the Silent Möbius stage play sitting in my drafts for two years. I know, I suck. Anyway, I decided to finish it up this weekend and even made gifs for your viewing pleasure!
What was the Silent Möbius stage play?
The Saimebi stage play was a two-hour live performance of the Silent Möbius story produced in 2017 that featured both new and existing characters in a blended tale that served as a love letter to fans as well as an introduction to those not overly familiar with the series.
How did I get to see it?
A DVD was released featuring a very basic recording of the March 29th 2017 performance of the play for 6,000 yen. I purchased the DVD and watched it from the comfort of my own home (sadly I didn’t get to actually go to the live show).
What did I think of it?
The story presented in the stage play is almost an introduction to the conflict between humans and Lucifer Hawk while at the same time managing to follow trace elements of the main tale (Ganossa, for example, is still the main villain here and his motivations remain largely intact). The AMP team is formed, they must fight against some nasty villains, and only through a unified front can justice prevail. Everyone looks fairly close to their characters (save for Kiddy as usual UGHHH) and the actors give solid performances.
However, it isn’t a hugely successful piece of theatre. I think what held it back from being incredibly awesome is that there’s just waaaaaaay too much going on. There are SO many characters that it’s impossible for them all to get the focus they really need and as a result, the pace is fairly breakneck and offers little insight into the extended cast. I mean what’s the point of the random bridge bunny characters other than “Asamiya wanted his radio show girls on stage”?
It does have some great moments though, even if it goes a million miles an hour. I was surprised by how well it worked overall for a one-off full-throttle injection of the franchise directly into the veins.
My favourite moments? (With gifs!)
Tumblr media
1) Kiddy terrorises Ralph: I enjoy watching her do this in every iteration of the franchise and unsurprisingly, Ralph is firmly put in his place here too. Unfortunately, the pair don’t get a lot of development but neither do Roy and Katsumi (arguably the main romantic pairing in the franchise) all things considered. The focus of this play is totally on AMP getting the strength to kick some Lucifer Hawk ass and I’m 100% down with that. (Serious note on Kiddy tho, a missed opportunity to cast a black or mixed actress.)
Tumblr media
2) Mana meets Lum Cheng: I absolutely adored this scene, it made the 6000 yen price tag on this tiny-ass, budget AF DVD totally worth it. Mana visits Lum Cheng to recruit her to AMP and is immediately met with resistance from the young woman. The pair actually fight it out for quite a while before it becomes apparent that Mana knows a lot about Lum Cheng’s family connection to Zesso and so, not only does Mana reveal that she knows the girl’s grandfather but that she knew Genvara -- Lum Cheng’s brother. It’s only after this revelation that Lum Cheng can be persuaded to lower her weapon and hear Mana out. I can’t believe it took so long for this topic to be properly touched on in the franchise but it made for a very powerful scene as they both quietly acknowledge their shared loss and move forward together as part of AMP.
Tumblr media
3) Opening Credits: I fucking loved the opening sequence with everyone posing, fighting, then dancing. So much dancing. I could have watched it forever. “Awakening” by Kuryu Mina is used to great effect in the opening, then totally loses its draw by the curtain because they repeat it several times. Once for the opening was fine guys, you don’t need to go crazy with the one vocal track you commissioned, the background music is totally adequate.
Anyway if you want to see the entire opening package (which is amazing) it is one of the few videos available from the performance online. Please see here.
Tumblr media
4) Katsumi refuses to give in to Mova: A lot of the stage play involves Katsumi fighting against all the Nemesis pals intent on screwing her over. Mova (who previously fought against Gigelf) is particularly derisive of her struggles against the Lucifer Hawk. With nods from her mother and Grospoliner, Katsumi rails against Mova (and Ganossa) whenever and however she can.
Tumblr media
5) Katsumi and Grosspoliner: You’d think 2 hours wouldn’t be enough time to introduce every element of this 30+-year-old series to a modern audience, but they really do try. Case in point, Katsumi gets Grosspoliner in the stage play. The sentient weapon speaks to her and they form a pact, allowing her to finally get the upper hand against Mova and co.
Tumblr media
6) Matsui Naoko as Fuyuka: There was a particularly special moment towards the end which involved a guest appearance by Katsumi’s original seiyuu, Matsui Naoko. Matsui has graduated from playing the spunky young heroine to the role of her self-sacrificing mother, Fuyuka. Although the baby she’s holding is American Sniper levels of fake, it is quite a touching scene as Katsumi connects to this moment in her past. (It was also great seeing Matsui Naoko just, like, in general.)
So yeah, those were the moments that stood out to me most. If you are a fan of the series and have an opportunity to check out the stage play DVD then I’d recommend it. The play won’t change your world but it is an enjoyable, nostalgic way to spend a couple of hours with lively new versions of beloved characters.

Hey! I just got into all of these guys from watching high&low! Can you give me some mvs and maybe vids to learn more about them? Your posts are awesome and I want to learn more!! Thanks!
ooh man... i’m stupid actually and don’t know much about each member of each group, mostly i just follow my select favorites, so if you want to learn about them as people with their personalities and such you should page @apotatowhenever because she knows so much or you can look in the tags i have for each group which are just like, their group names!
but i can give you lots of mvs to watch
the rest of this is under a cut because it got hella long.
a few rapid things: the following groups are managed by an entertainment company known as LDH short for love dream happiness. i’ve listed them as separate groups but there are two larger groups made up of these members known as exile and exile tribe. unlike in kpop, where every member sings and dances, ldh focuses on a model of having vocalists and performers.
vocalists, of course, sing. performers focus on dancing. this allows for a really unique presentation especially in concerts because it allows people to specialize in their skill instead of struggling to sing while dancing complicated routines. all of the groups i follow have at least two vocalists and the rampage has three so there’s still plenty of variety and harmony in the singing and this also ensures the vocalists get more lines as well.
also, members get moved around a lot. some of them leave the groups as well, so in some of the older videos especially for exile, you’re going to see guys who aren’t in the current group. other members are added to different groups. a few guys graduated from the acting troupe to join the performance groups.
quick notes on the members who are actually in high & low:

✎ rinne has lost his lucky charm. what happens now?
gift for @kurukuryu ^^
word count: i did not count
ship: rinne x kuryu
tags?: rinnekuryu, angst, no comfort, rinnekuryu ship being hit by a harpoon gun known as kurode, implications of rinne being drunk, kurode is ooc (i know nothing about him), light swearing, rinne is ooc
It's been a year since the red haired gambler lost his one and only lucky charm. He can still recall the night Kuryu walked out on him - her voice echoing in his brain telling him to grow up, the reoccuring scene of her taking of her engagement ring and throwing it on the floor and even that shadowy figure that took her away from him…that was all still so vivid and it was plaguing his mind.
Since then, Rinne has been drowning in debt and sorrow. His first instinct was to go to the casino and get wasted, and maybe if he was lucky enough, a pretty girl would find him and take him into her loving arms…just like what Kuryu did. No! He can't think like this! He needs to find a new lover, a new lucky charm, one who he can spoil with riches! But there was no point in that. No one would be as patient and loving as Kuryu, no one would do the things she did for him…
No! This break up is all Kuryu's fault. She was the one who gave him a second chance back when their first date went pear shape so she was to blame. He did everything for her, he dedicated so many songs to her, he snuck out of practice just so that she could see him. Heck, he even skipped a live show just so that he could be with her during her birthday. So she is the ungrateful one.
Rinne sighs in defeat.
No matter how much he tries to convince himself, this breakup was and is his fault. Despite all of what he did, he'd constantly forget important things about her, he'd get wasted with his friends and refuse to clean up the mess the next morning, he'd rarely pay attention to her and he had the audacity to blame his line of work for it. The guilt is crushing him, eating him, tormenting him even. Every night, he'd go drinking in a desperate attempt to wash away all his sorrows. But this time, it was different…way different.
Rinne was able to score a date with a hot chick on this dating site. He had already met up with her a couple of times and my god was she attractive. Sure, she didn't have the kindess or compassion Kuryu had and maybe she was just there for the fame and money but regardless of all that, he has a date. And tonight, he was gonna spoil her. He needed to get out of his apartment and he needed fresh air so this was the perfect opportunity for him. But all of this came crashing down when Rinne saw a familiar figure in the restaurant. A small figure that he once held in his arms. Now, she was being held by another man.
The instant Rinne's eyes met Kuryu's, he knew he fucked up badly. What was she doing with him? What was he doing with her? His mind began to cloud up will a bunch of different thoughts, all of which were the same ones that had been haunting his mind. Rinne slapped himself across the face. This was supposed to be a fresh start for him, this was his chance to get over his failed engagement. As the night went by, Rinne and the other woman exchanged pleasant conversations with eachother. He'd glance at Kuryu and the other man every now and then which seemed to piss of his date. She tried to keep his eyes on her but that failed, he was completely transfixed on Kuryu's smiling face, her expressions ranging from elated to plain disgust whilst she was eating her food. Rinne smiled. He wanted to see her as happy as that again.
The night was still young, everyone in the restaurant was minding their own business when all of a sudden, the man who was with Kuryu knelt down on one knee and proposed to her! Rinne couldn't believe it. That son of a bitch had the audacity to take everything away from him while he was watching?! Rinne had enough. He stormed out of the restaurant, leaving his date completely helpless and confused but that didn't worry him. He couldn't give two shits about that bitch anyways. She wasn't Kuryu. She'll never be Kuryu.
And there's nobody in this world that could ever be like Kuryu.

HELLO FRIEND-SHIP ANON. WE GOIN’ IN TODAAAY @hypaalicious getting dragged into H&L hell :3
Usual additional tags to @mrsiwatatakanori @orionist and @gorou-chan
More under cut because wheee word vomit!
Lima/Hiroto: It was a quiet kind of meeting. Early in the afternoon, just a little past one probably. Too distracted by her surroundings, she barely notices him walking by her. Their first meeting is a collision when they walk into each other’s paths. The notebooks she had clutched against her scattered onto the ground. Their fingers touch for the briefest moment and he notices the neat, tiny handwriting across the pages. The history of SWORD and the region carefully documented on the lined paper is the ice breaker that starts their relationship.
They end up traveling together, taking long rides on the back of his motorcycle throughout the regions. She records their trips, taking notes, pressing leaves and flowers into her books to keep track of their journey. They ride often, to the sunset, speaking softly of history and retelling stories of the long road they shared.
Lily/Cobra: Itokan had been highly recommended to her as an ideal place to hang out and relax, or so her friends had told her. No one had mentioned it to be the headquarters of the Hoodlum Squad. It had been suspicious enough that there was no one dining during the peak lunch rush hours. However, her curiosity got the better of her and she found herself seated at the booth with a plate of omelette rice in front of her.
So when he slid into the booth, comic book in one hand and a bottle of soda in the other, she was confused to say the least. The casual conversation that followed when she recognized the series he was reading. The idle chatter continued well past the long afternoon hours and forged a friendship made of childhood memories fondly shared over a plate of omelette rice and a bottle of soda.
Jing/Rocky:She wasn’t quite sure what to think about a club space being the ‘safest haven for women during the night.’ Neon lights, loud music and crowds of strangers hardly seemed ‘safe’ to her. However, there was still an underlying sense of security that ran throughout the club. It was surprising, to say the least, to see women being well respected in the space. Her initial skepticism was put to rest and she slowly found herself enjoying her time out with friends as the night passed.
When the music abruptly stopped for an announcement of the night’s festivities, she couldn’t tell if she could be intimidated or attracted to the imposing man who stood at the balcony overlooking his kingdom. He had announced it was “party time” to all his patrons and offered the gift of a drink on him for the night. That was when she had made eye contact with him, past the dark glasses he wore. From there, her intrigue turned into a yearning to learn more about him.
HyKoo:
The sound of bones breaking was never pleasant. The screams that accompanied that sound were even worse. The most confusing part of the whole ordeal was the gleeful laughter that came from some of the witnesses of the brutal beating. He let out a curt sigh, content with the sight of the man with clearly broken legs and turned to her. “Are you alright?” He asked, an eyebrow raised as he appraised her well being. “Come, let’s get you clean up. I promise we’ll bring you to a safe place.
Club Heaven hardly looked nor felt like any place of safety she would have expected. She had half a mind to run off on her own; however, she couldn’t help but be persuaded by his calm demeanor and commanding presence to follow. The rest of the night was spent following him, trying to grasp how he could be so calm in all the chaos, all the while trying to strike up some sort of conversation to keep his interest in her. “You can call me Koo.” He eventually introduced himself. You wouldn’t mind if I also call you, Sir, right?
—–
BONUS:
AU were @yuutolovesturtles and I are fucking richer than Kuryu and pay for Smokey’s medical bills and rebuild Nameless Street into a safe haven for those who don’t have a home. K? k. COOL.
