for a cause
It hasn’t been long since Dia placed some investments in Daybreak Orphanage and became the owner. It was her only Arcadian ‘business and while she could have taken ownership of others, this was entrusted to her by a friend. When she took it over, she noticed the place was severely lacking in many things-- order, funding, employees and volunteers. It came to her attention that money isn’t the only thing it needed.
And so, to attract the community’s attention and focus it on the children, Dia held a small fund-raising event. With the Flower Festival just ending and most of the community’s moods all fluffy and giving, Dia thought it was the perfect time to hold such an event.
At the Orphanage’s garden, she set up a small area for people to eat, listen to music and play with the children. Since she was never the best at socializing, Dia took it upon herself to handle the music instead of making a fool of herself elsewhere.
She had a piano donated to the orphanage and while it was difficult to set up in the garden, it wasn’t impossible. The children excitedly played with it at first, careless fingers creating the most random of tunes by striking the black and white keys.
Once everyone had their fun, Dia gently told them she’d have to use it for a bit. One child refused to go anywhere, so instead of shooing them away, Dia sat beside the enthusiastic pianist. “Can you let big sister play first? It won’t take long, I promise.” The child eventually settled with sitting on her lap-- it was uncomfortable at first, but Dia found it endearing after a while.
Not wanting to bother with calling people’s attention, Dia simply started playing. The child on her lap at first started hitting random keys but it didn’t take too long for them to quiet down and simply observe as Dia’s fingers moved through the keys, a level of finesse and composure present as the song comes to life.
Her performance was far from perfect, but it wasn’t too bad, either. Unlike words, music was easier to understand and Dia was sure her intentions would reach those that listened. It was a solemn and emotional song, a mix of a sad, cheerful and hopeful melody. Most of the kids here were the same and even if Dia can’t fully relate, she empathized with what they had to go through.
The song comes to an end and the child that had been sitting obediently on Dia’s lap started getting excitable again. Dia couldn’t help but laugh softly as once more, the child started hitting random notes. One of these days, she’ll have to give proper lessons. For now, she lets them do as they please.
Hopefully the small event would gather enough funds and attention towards the Orphanage to acquire more volunteers. Her home is at Leuda and even she can’t commit herself to visiting. Hopefully she’ll find people that will.
