Sam’s Tattoos
I did say that I would go into detail about her tattoos, so here we go. Samara has 10 tattoos in total. 1 of which she shares with Aria and Sara, which is a trio friend tattoo. The other did not fit on the template.
Tumblr media
Right Wrist
Samara has Buttercup on her wrist. Aria has Blossom and Sara has Bubbles.
Tumblr media
Left Arm
Sam has always been a lover of musicals. She portrayed Cosette in their high school’s production of Les Misérables five different times.
Tumblr media
Right Ribs
Mothra. Queen of the Monsters. Giver of Life. The Winged One.
Tumblr media
Left Collarbone/Shoulder Area
The TV in the junkyard did not have the best reception, so Horace would rent movies for his young daughter to watch. She grew particularly fond of the film, “The Crow” having also read the comic books that the movie was adapted from.
She named her rottweiler pup Brandon in honor of Brandon Lee after his death before the Crow was released. Brandon (the dog) survived the Junkyard Shooting, along with his owner.
Horace was also quite fond of the film.
This tattoo was Sam’s way of honoring her father.
Tumblr media
Left Thigh
Samara visited the library a great deal when she resided with her father and grandfather. JRR Tolkien was one of her favorite authors.
Tumblr media
Crease of Her Right Arm
Dana and Sam had a very deep bond. One of Dana’s favorite books to read to her sister was “Where The Wild Things Are” and she would always pretend to gobble Sam up when she read this part.
This tattoo was meant to honor Dana’s memory after her suicide
Tumblr media
Right Collarbone/Shoulder Area
Dana was in love with Kurt Cobain. She and Sam would eat pizza and lay on the floor of her loft apartment, listening to Nirvana at full blast.
Lithium was one of Dana’s favorite songs.
Tumblr media
Right Ribs
Samara is also an avid consumer of poetry. One of her favorite poems in the world is "The Old Astronomer to His Pupil." By Sarah Williams. Her tattoo is the poem's most renowned couplet.
Tumblr media
Right Thigh
Sam has never been overly fond of Disney movies. However, she did always adore Beauty and The Beast.
Tumblr media
Right Shin
The Dark Crystal is her favorite movie from her childhood. She and her grandfather, Andrew, would watch it all the time before he died.
She still watches it consistently when she is stressed.

Right? I'm not going to expose my child to the same thing that our parents (or…well the nannies in my case) exposed us to. I'm a huge fan of Hamlet, most of Shakespeare's works actually, but I still can't watch The Lion King. I just can't. And Bambi is just as bad. Homeward Bound is worse. Nope. She loves animals too much, I can't put her through that. I love Casper, it's one of my favorite films from childhood, so thank you. I also really love Idle Hands and Final Destination, but Anya's a bit young for those ha. I was 100% that 90s girl with a Devon Sawa obsession, that much is for sure.
Tumblr media
To be fair, I only hoard some of the older tech because that was all I could afford for a long while. But it's still a big walk down nostalgia lane now that I'm pulling out the VHS, ha. Hmmm. Of course, I have the 2-tape Titanic. Plus the typical Disney/Pixar stuff - Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Toy Story (1 and 2), Pocahontas, Shrek, Tarzan. I've also got Mrs. Doubtfire, Home Alone, Jurassic Park. The original Overboard with Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. Those are just the ones I can remember, but I know I've got some anime too.
Oh hell, ix-nay on the traumatizing children's movies of yore, I'm still reeling from Bambi and The Iron Giant. Casper's a much safer bet -- peak Bill Pullman, Christina Ricci and Devon Sawa, way to parent there.
Tumblr media
I'm VERY impressed -- I'm not even sure where my Blu-ray player is at the moment, I'm slightly ashamed of my failure at tech hoarding. That begs the question, though: now I want to know what VHS tapes you've been hiding in the attic, aside from Casper.

“Shh, it’s alright,” the villain said. “You’re doing beautifully and I’m so proud of you. But that’s enough now. It was cruel of them to make you fight me - you could never have won. It’s not your fault.” (Belasco!verse, something that happened while they were still enemies)
@djinmer4 @brienne-of-the-sapphire-isle @thejadesabre
If Kurt can be honest, if he can confess, which itself is a blasphemy at this point, the life as a Demon Lord is not terribly bad, of course, in some cases Kurt may need to punish some people/demons/mutants and yes, in some cases Kurt may enjoy such acts, moreover, is not always.
However, one thing that takes his well-deserved sleep at night is the feeling of long and something else he can´t quite understand yet. The fabric of the space and dimension was altered and now Kurt is the new Belasco.
This new power gave him safety and time to think, not always Kurt understand how immensely powerful he is now, but, one thing is clear to the new Demon Lord.
He is missing her.
Kitty Pryde is on his mind like an infection that has no cure or he refuses to cure. Every time, his mind would think about small moments with this tiny woman.
“That´s why He is the best Robin Hood, not Errol Flynn”
“What? how dare you, Katzchen?”
Her laughter, smiles, pouts, tears, and scowl are stuck in his mind and Kurt wonders if this is a blessing or a curse. After some time, a concept that is new to Limbo, Kurt decides to take actions in his hand.
If the Demon Lord wants something, then he will get it.
And as blasphemy, as it is, Kurt wants, wants and wants her.
I´m getting mad or madder.
The few(or a lot of) stuffs Kurt knew and remember about Kitty, his Kitty, is how much she is ready to go to protect the ones she loves and Kitty Pryde is closer with Yana(this did give the wrong assumption to Pryor who was turning down more than once) and saved the blonde girl more than once.
Certainly, Captain Britain and the other X-men would go to him if he did kidnap Yana, is not a clever plan, Kurt knows it but is the one he will stick with(fear of rejection or of her own fear if he just show up in her door like the new Demon Lord is too heavy on him, too oppressor ) and begin setting things in motion.
Of course, unlike the other Belasco, Yana will not be harmed in any way, in fact, the girl is sleeping soundly in the limbo and it almost feels like she is making fun of Kurt.
Well, I can´t say anything, this plan is not the greatest either.
Finally, after some time(a non-existent term in Limbo that Kurt himself never learn) Kitty show up, wearing her blue outfit and with Yana´s soul sword and there´s no one else with her.
Did Brain …not tell her?
Kurt is not like the old Kurt, his fur and blue were replace for a more human skin, human and deadly, after all, is easier to manipulate people if you look like a handsome and gallant man then a blue demon.
“You kidnap Yana” shouts Kitty not having a great day, oh, Kurt remember that expression on her face, whilst his plan was not good, at very least she is here.
“She is sleeping, but, more important: you are alone?” there´s concern in his voice that the young woman doesn´t know what to say. Is he faking, mocking her or truly concerned?
“I assure you, I can kick your ass on my own”
“ I have a feeling you would say this”
Turns out that Kitty, with all her skills and intelligence, is not a match for a Demon Lord(to be fair, fewer are a match for Kurt now) and Kurt is really holding back.
When the Demon Lord realize that Kitty would fight until her last breath, the man/demon(labels are non-important now) didn´t think much when he turns Kitty into a kitten.
“Pretty Kitty, soft kitten”
“Kurt?”
“Shush, I´m singing to you”
This prompt the ever fighter!Kitty to drop her sword and stare in fear(something Kurt truly didn´t want to see, but, like the old saying: with great powers, you lose your humanity and make bad decisions) and a side part of Kurt quite enjoy this look on her.
Again, Kurt is biased when the subject in question is Kitty Pryde.
“Shh, it’s alright,” says walking towards the Kitten!Kitty trying to speak in a more soothing and sincere voice “ “You’re doing beautifully and I’m so proud of you. But that’s enough now. It was cruel of them to make you fight me - you could never have won. It’s not your fault” Kurt careless her head gently and Kitty falls to sleep, her head would hit the ground if Kurt didn´t stop the movement.
Kurt remains to hold Kitty until she wakes, the gesture would be sweet or even romantic if, well, the situation wasn´t as bizarre as this.
Her brown eyes open in fear and confusion but didn´t dare to move.
“Hi, fancy to meet you here? so, why I´m a kitten and where is Yana?”
“I live here and your name is Kitty” make a gesture with his right hand" but now is just in name, I wanted you to stop and that was the only solution I could come up with and Yana is fine, she is sleeping and unharmed"
“Well, you got my undivided attention, what do you want? and could you let me go?” Kurt almost says never but let Kitty leave his arms. She is tiny and warm, unlike him. A silence reigns between them, the Kitty in his mind was too angelical, too pure and the one in front of him is too real.
“I want to make a deal with you,” says mistaking Kurt´s silence with something worse either for her or Yana.
“You wanna make a deal with the devil?” there´s mirth in his words because only Kitty would try something so stupid, but she is lucky this time(if it was any other demon….)
“I stay here in and Yana goes home”
Kurt, understanding how bad he is with communications and Kitty, tries to make himself clear as possible.
“I never wanted her to begin with, it was always you” with a snap of his fingers the sleeping Yana was back to her home, “ I think no one mention who I´m and what I want is for you to stay here, not as my prisoner”
The word Kitty is looking to describe herself right now is flabbergast.
“What? Did you want a roommate? and who are you?” Kitty is confused and anger sure must exist a German word for such feeling.
“My name is Kurt Wagner, but in this dimension I´m Balasco, judging by the looks you are giving Captain Britain never told you”
“Prove,” says with finality “prove you are Kurt” my Kurt is implied or maybe Kurt is hopefully wistful.
“When you enter the mansion for the first time, you did cry feeling homesick, you did fear my look, but, you were the first to apologize say if we could be friends, you drink milk directly from the box and always liked fairytales stories”
Kitty´s jaw drops in astonishing and to ice the cake, Kurt shows his ‘new’ arm which is blue and familiar.
“Kurt, what the fuck?”
“Indeed, so no one told you anything?” Kitty responds this with a big no. There are anger and resentment and confusion with everything and everyone.
“So, you really wanted a Roommate?”
“I´m a Demon Lord, I can´t just put on the craigslist” jokes “and to be clear, you aren´t a prisoner …I just want…”
“A roommate? Got it, well, it wouldn´t be the first time we share a room in the most bizarre way”
“In the first time, Scott and Wolverine´s brawls destroyed my room, I wasn´t happy with that,” says remembering the incident.
“Well, mission accomplished, you got a new roommate” and Kitty may say or do anything but when Kurt´s blue arm start to hurt, everything was forgotten(for now)
“Hey, are you alright?”
“This arm hurts me” the pain is sporadical, sometimes the pain is minimal and other is giant. Kitty touches his arm in a medical procedure. The pain finally ceased with her touches.
“So, while I was sleeping, what did I miss?”

What other fandoms are you familiar enough with to use as an AU prompt? Pokemon Trainer AU? Homestuck AU (they'd still probably die but at least there are lots of ways to come back to life)?
I’m not that familiar with Homestuck, definitely not enough to do an AU.  I read the novelizations of the Pokemon show as a kid but never saw the show or played any of the video games.  I did play the super-obscure Pokemon board game, but most of my trading cards were printed in Japanese (I had a strange childhood), so my experience there is, uh, probably not quite overlapping with everyone else’s.
Anyway, if you want list of all my fandoms… Boy howdy.  I don’t think I can come up with them all.  However, I can list everything that comes to mind between now and ~20 minutes from now when I have to end my procrastination break and go back to dissertating.  So here it is, below the cut:

Disclaimer 1: Like a lot of people who went to high school in the American South, my education in literature is pretty shamefully lacking in a lot of areas.  (As in, during our African American History unit in ninth grade we read To Kill a Mockingbird, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn… and that was it.  As in, our twelfth-grade US History class, I shit you not, covered Gone With the Wind.)  There were a lot of good teachers in with the *ahem* Less Woke ones (how I read Their Eyes Were Watching God and The Bluest Eye) and college definitely set me on the path to trying to find books written/published outside the WASP-ier parts of the U.S., but the overall list is still embarrassingly hegemonic.
Disclaimer 2: There are a crapton of errors — typos, misspelled names, misattributions, questionable genre classifications, etc. — in here.  If you genuinely have no idea what a title is supposed to be, ask me.  Otherwise, please don’t bother letting me know about my mistakes.
Disclaimer 3: I am not looking for recommendations.  My Goodreads “To Read” list is already a good 700 items long, and people telling me “if you like X, then you’ll love Y!” genuinely stresses me the fuck out.
Disclaimer 4: There are no unproblematic faves on this list.  I love Supernatural, and I know that Supernatural is hella misogynistic.  On the flip side: I don’t love The Lord of the Rings at all, partially because LOTR is hella misogynistic, but I also don’t think that should stop anyone else from loving LOTR if they’re willing to love it and also acknowledge its flaws.

Christmas Movies on Disney+ Streaming Guide
https://ift.tt/2WazCa1
Like frozen fractals spiraling all around, winter is here once more, and with it is the most wonderful time of the year. Tinsel is being strung around trees, cookies are in the oven, and millions are practicing the hazardous art of exterior illumination. When the days are short, and the nights long, it’s the perfect time to lean into family tradition, and maybe watch a traditional classic movie or two.
Of course with everyone glued to the nostalgia emanating from what is sure to be a new family tradition—Disney+—you might be wondering what holiday gems are hidden in its streaming bag of goodies? Well, we’re here to answer that question and offer you a recommendation on the best holiday cheer to be had in the Mouse House.
Frozen (2013)
Disney+
Frozen, an animated movie you might have heard of, technically takes place during summer. But it sure doesn’t feel that way after Queen Elsa freezes the fjord and belts songs about the snowmen she and her sister want to build. Indeed, there is hardly a more festive film for the holidays than this celebration of self-love and familial love. Rather than being the story of a princess falling for a prince, Frozen is about the love between two sisters, Elsa (Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell), and how that bond can transcend fear, isolation, and lifelong trauma like losing your parents at an early age.

Frozen 2: ‘Show Yourself’ Song Was Almost Cut from Movie

Movies
Frozen 2 Ending Explained
By David Crow
Fairly sophisticated stuff for an animated movie, Frozen became a bona fide classic in large part due to its songbook by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, with “Let It Go” standing out as an anthem for self-empowerment and the realization of identity. And if you overlook the fact you heard that song probably five thousand times, it still has that same resonance, which is why children are drawn to its message, as well as Elsa’ irresistible ice powers brought to dazzling life. When you factor in Anna’s own awkward charm, the power the two radiate together is warming in any season.
Home Alone (1990)
Disney+
Another holiday classic from Fox, Home Alone remains a millennial touchstone for this time of year, and a gift that keeps on giving. Yes, everyone remembers the end where Macaulay Culkin tortures two bumbling goons (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) as if they’re Elmer Fudd, but the movie has a lot more going for it than just slapstick sociopathy. Indeed, when Kevin McCallister isn’t being a sadist, this film has an earnest appeal about celebrating the fantasy of a kid living by himself at home.
When his parents leave Kevin McAllister home alone for Christmas—it was an accident!—he has a luxury house to himself that he lounges about as if it were a giant playground with free ice cream, pizza, and R-rated movie viewing parties. Things go a little pear-shaped though when crooks try to rob the joint, but he handles that in glib fashion, all while sweetly pining for his mother. In fact, as you get older, Catherine O’Hara’s trials and tribulations to get back home to her baby boy in time for Christmas are as amusing as Kevin’s hijinks. (John Candy! Polka music!! Polka Christmas music!?!) But probably the reason this is a real classic has a lot to do with John Williams’ eternally heartwarming score.
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)
Disney+
A prime example of a sequel just doing the same thing again but to lesser results, Home Alone 2 is nowhere near as good as the movie that spawned it. However, Lost in New York has its charms. For starters, once Kevin accidentally gets on the wrong flight in a sequence that is sweetly dated to pre-2001, he winds up checking into the Plaza Hotel. This leads to a mirthful new subplot involving Kevin outwitting hotel management, including a movie-stealing Tim Curry as the concierge. The film is also responsible for the groovy Darlene Love holiday standard, “All Alone on Christmas.”

Is Home Alone The Best Christmas movie of All Time?
By James Clayton
Otherwise, yeah, it’s pretty much the same movie with Kevin being even more sadistic on the crooks… even as he lets the biggest criminal of them all escape his grasp during Donald Trump’s cameo.
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
Disney+
Michael Caine revealed the secret of playing Ebenezer Scrooge against Muppets is to act as if you’re doing Shakespeare in the Park. By playing his humbugging, anti-Christmas malcontent completely straight, he gives a whiff of legitimate menace to a Dickensian adaptation that features Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy as struggling Victorian parents.

The Christmas Chronicles 2 Trailer Has Kurt Russell Back as Santa for Netflix Film

A Toy Store Near You Season 2 To Release on Christmas Day (Exclusive)
By Tony Sokol
Okay, so it’s not the best adaptation of Charles Dickens’ timeless classic, but it is a sweet one with a nice message and a few good songs to accompany its silliness.
Noelle (2019)
Disney+
We’ve seen movies about Santa’s wife and Santa’s brother, and a trilogy about Santa’s murderer claiming his job, but what about one focused on… Santa’s children? Such is the appeal of Noelle, one of the first films ever developed exclusively for Disney+. Written and directed by rom-com stalwart Marc Lawrence, this is a film about the difficulties in assuming the mantle of Santa Claus. Ostensibly that duty must fall on the latest Santa’s son, Nick Kringle (Bill Hader), but after he goes AWOL, it will become Noelle Kringle’s (Anna Kendrick) responsibility to find him and perhaps assume the title of Santa.
Grab a FREE TRIAL of Disney+, on us, right here!
It’s a pretty silly premise, but Kendrick and Hader are both winsome personalities who tend to elevate any material they’re given, and there might be something refreshing of the North Pole being viewed from the perspective of Noelle instead of St. Nicholas. With that said…. We haven’t quite gotten around to loading it up on our Disney+ yet either.
The Santa Clause (1994)
Disney+
Tim Allen really was on top of the world in the 1990s, wasn’t he? The star of ABC’s popular Home Improvement sitcom, and just a year away from becoming a Pixar legend in Toy Story, Allen could get any family entertainment greenlit. Thus enters Disney’s The Santa Clause, a movie that posits “what if Tim Allen became Santa?” That’s pretty much what happens when Allen’s schmo-y Scott Calvin inadvertently is responsible for the death of the previous Santa who slips off his roof.
The consequence of Scott’s mistake is he puts on the red and white outfit to finish Santa’s sleigh ride that night, much to the delight of his son Charlie (Eric Lloyd). Little does he know that by donning the suit, he has entered into a “Santa Clause” which means he becomes the big guy—literally so as he gains 100 pounds of weight and a white beard overnight. It’s still amusing now, but our favorite bit will always be David Krumholtz as the no-nonsense North Pole elf from Brooklyn.
The Sound of Music (1965)
Disney+
A movie that has sold more tickets than almost any other film ever made—only Star Wars and Gone with the Wind were seen by more people in theaters—The Sound of Music is a musical epic that’s as endearing as it is saccharine. With a sweeping plot that documents in the rosiest of tints, the Von Trapp family growing up on the eve of World War II in the Austrian Alps, this is an all-time classic from 20th Century Fox because of its wholesomeness, and because of its many great songs belted by Julie Andrews.

In fact, one of them has become a Christmas classic. “A Few of My Favorite Things” is actually sung by Andrews’ Maria during a thunderstorm, and not Christmastime. But her inflections about “girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes, snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes” are so joyous, it could only live on during the most joyful month of the year. And the movie does indeed mark the holidays, and every other major event in the lives of the Von Trapp family’s six children that sees a nun go from being their nanny to their new stepmother, spiriting them away from the Nazis. Happy holidays, kids!

SECRET RADIO | 10.3.20 & 10.10.20 Combo
Tumblr media
Secret Radio | 10.3 & 10.10 | Hear it here.
Liner notes by Evan except *, artwork by Paige
1. The Modern Lovers - “Roadrunner”
Can there be, can there ever be, a better hittin’ the road song than this? Not to me, not to us. “I’m in love with modern moonlight… I’m in love with the radio on” This song brings everything that makes rock so fundamentally exciting: the straightforward beat, electric guitars, electric keys, that sense of complete freedom with your gang in the backseat singing the chorus.
2. Swell Maps - “Full Moon In My Pocket”
It pains me to admit that I cannot remember the name of the pasteup guy at the Rocket who used to tell me about the bands he loved, and that he thought I’d dig. I was so, SO into Pavement at the time, head over heels, and he did a great job of acquainting me with some of their precedents, handing off tape comps with songs from Young Marble Giants, Au Pairs, Swell Maps, and so much more. One of the tapes had this song, in two versions actually: this one, and an a cappella version, which sounds very poncey except it was the same take as this, bouncing with reverb and attitude. On our long drive from the woods to the city, a full moon hung in front of us like a carrot on a stick, and I started singing this song before I even realized it. Whatever the name of that super-awesome pasteup guy (Tom? I feel like it was Tom), I just want to tell him: I’m sorry, I’ve always been bad at remembering names, but I’ve never forgotten those tapes. Thank you.
3. Assa Cica - “Yokpo Wa Non Kpo Hami”
When we were first getting into Beninese rock, it was Antoine Dougbé who pulled us down the rabbit hole. I figured we couldn’t be alone — his songs are the standouts on “Legends of Benin.” But there’s practically nothing to be found. I eventually found myself at Discogs, marveling at the sheer number of names that T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo went by and sifting through music looking for signs of Dougbé. I eventually found this album, and not just the voice but the whole style of the band convinced me that Assa-Cica was somehow another name Dougbé went by. After some discussion, Paige and I bought our first Beninese record. In the weeks that it took to arrive, we learned a lot more about Dougbé, including the fact that he’s not actually the singer on those songs! But also I don’t think Assa-Cica is the singer on this song either! We did turn out to love every song on this record, but this one is my personal favorite, just a barnburner with disco roots. Every time I listen to it I try to imagine the cultural and personal forces that brought it into being, and it only gets more absorbing.
4. Eko Roosevelt - “Me To A De Try My Own”
T.P. Orchestre research also brought me to an album they did with Betti-Betti (or Beti-Beti), a Cameroonian singer whose tracks eventually led to Eko Roosevelt. I don’t get down with all of the music of his that I’ve heard, but this one just brings a smile to my face every time. I love the patois he sings in, where recognizable words rise suddenly out of the bubbling disco bass and the good-natured horn sections. I would never have guessed that hunting for African voodoo funk would eventually reveal a path to appreciating disco… but I’m glad that it has. I mean, I spent whole years of my life thinking that horns had no place in rock music, so what the hell do I know?
5. Jacqueline Taïeb - “Le coeur au bout des doigts”
6. T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo - “Non Gbeto Do Mahu Tche”
This 7” is from that rich early period of T.P. Orchestre (this one is I think from ’72) where the arrangements are hand-drum heavy but the organ and guitar are funk. The vocal is — I don’t know what it is, it’s a genre I hadn’t heard until I heard this band in this period.
7. Los Wembler’s de Iquitos - “Llanto en la Selva”
8.  Iggy Pop “The Passenger”*
I’ve always thought this was one of Iggy Pop’s finest outside of his work with Stooges. I think I also always liked it because I am most often the passenger. I really really don’t like driving. I really avoid it. I have a driver’s license but boy do I not like to use it. There aren’t really a lot of songs about riding in the passenger seat that are positive or cool that I can think of besides this one and Art Brut’s “I Love Public Transportation”.
This album also makes me think of Shena’s old place on Damen Ave. in Wicker Park Chicago. This record and of course Bowie’s “Let’s Dance”.
Hope you had a great birthday Shena!
9. Jacques Dutronc - “Les Gens Sont Flous”
The things that gets me about the song are: that single bass note that plunges every time in the verse, the shaker in the chorus, and that freakin triangle hit that happens on the coolest possible beat throughout the entire song. I fully intend to lift that idea into another song if I can find the right spot for it.
10. Jimi Hendrix - “Third Stone From The Sun”
This goes down as one of the greatest rock recordings in history. Every time I swoon at the guitar phrases, the bass line, the drums, the weird low chaos of his slowed down vocals. Truly a masterpiece, capped off by the final minute of beautiful noise that sounds like planets in motion.
11. Björk Gu∂mundsdóttir and tríó Guðmundar Ingólfssonar - Gling-Gló - “Bella Simamaer”
12. Ayalew Mesfin - “Gedawo (The Hero)”
The first 20 seconds of this song are crucial, because it establishes the 4/4 rhythm that’s coursing under the 3/4 handclap. That is such a killer rhythmic feel I can hardly stand it. I only wish they’d pull out the handclap in the middle, just for a handful of measures, and then bring em in again. Meanwhile, Mesfin’s vocal approach is so intense!
Entr’Acte - “Phantom of the Opera Entr’Acte”*
We figured we needed an Entr’Acte to denote the change in vibe from trying to stay alert and amped on the turnpike to being back home in Brooklyn. Half of this broadcast was made in the front seat of the van on our drive back to NY after our recent visit to the Midwest where we stayed in the woods the majority of the time with a couple of runs to St. Louis to pick up Banh Mi So and tofu Laap.
Evan and I have this thing we call “Disney Reptile Brain” but before that I should explain, Evan and I have this other thing we call “different high schools.” We have an age difference that we mostly don’t notice but every now and then there will be some cultural touchstone and one of us is like “What!? You don’t remember that!?” and we’re like “Ahh, different high schools!” So something like, the year 1994, Evan might remember it as when Kurt Cobain died, and I’ll remember it as the year “The Lion King” came out.
So, Evan missed all the of the major releases by Disney from that time – Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion King, etc. – and thus he can see how ridiculously bad these remakes are in a way that I can’t. He says that you have to “Disney Reptile brain” to fully see the movie, that you have to have the animated version playing in your mind’s eye at the same time you're watching these “live action” remakes or they don’t make any sense. And it’s true, for me and lots of other people I know born between 1984 and 1990 we experience this when watching these films, like you already know it so well and know what’s going to happen it’s more like some sort of ritual, incantation, or reenactment of a feeling.
So, that’s Disney Reptile Brain. And if you’re like, wait, but this is Phantom of the Opera and that’s not Disney. You’re right, but it turns out Reptile Brain is a thing that can happen with musicals and ALW stuff is perfect for it. (Evita! Evita!) I am helpless when I hear this music which I got into around the same time that I was devouring Disney VHS, even though I hear it now and it’s SO. SILLY. But when I hear this melody, I’m like right there, on the boat with Christine and the Phantom. I’m like a cat picked up by the scruff and I’m just completely engrossed and I can’t unlearn that feeling. If you’ve seen Phantom at all recently, it is straight up hilarious kid stuff, like how it starts with an auction of lot #666, and the phantom is like this super moody broody guy who writes passive aggressive notes to everyone. I now can hear it as so funny and so square, but what you’re hearing on this track is my reptile brain in full effect.
Next time this music comes around, we’ll get into how Christine is Professor X and Magnito is the Phantom...
14. Sunny Blacks Band - “Holonon Die”
Ha! I said plenty about this song on air. Suffice it to say I’ve been getting obsessed with Meloclém and his performances. It’s really hard to find out anything about him, so this early track makes me really happy. I think this is sung in Fon.
15. Yo La Tengo - “False Alarm”
Alongside “Third Stone from the Sun,” another of my all-time favorite recordings ever. Yo La Tengo was a key protein in learning about rock music, starting with the album  “Painful” and hitting a peak not just on this album but specifically this song. Alongside a vivid memory of Sean N., I helplessly air-keyboard to it, air-drum to it, dance my face off. By that final phrase I’m all worn out.
16. Meas Samon & So Savoeun - Hits Collection
We don’t really know anything about this song, including its title. It’s from a cassette called “Hits Collection.” We know Meas Samon from other sources, but I have no idea what they’re talking about and what is happening in this song, though I will say the tape warping on the entire fabric of the track is absolutely delicious.
17. Syna So Pro - “Fengyang Song”
I feel so proud of Syna So Pro and St. Louis introducing this track. The first time we saw her perform this song was live at El Leñador, and it was a knockout. She (they?) used a looping pedal situation to build this huge harmonic structure in real time. I believe she may be studying Chinese, but I know she’s studying Chinese music. There’s this and one other amazing Chinese song in addition to her many songs in English on her album “Vox.”
Nino Rota
18. Fela Kuti - “Open & Close”
I would listen to this whole song just for the Tony Allen solo in the early middle — but I also love how the song is so long that even a solo as particular as that one gets swallowed back up into the totality of the track (though he has many amazing passages throughout). The emotional equilibrium of the horns is cautiously optimistic. And I find myself thinking about the passage that goes “Let me tell you a story: open and close,” and how “open and close” is a narrative in action right there in three words. What was open has closed. It’s clearly a big change, a serious shift. Once open, now closed. Why? What changes as a result? Did anyone get hurt in the closing?
19. France Gall - “Celui Que J’aime”*
In the theme of “songs that got away” (see “Muxima”) this is one that I was thrilled to find again! I heard it on Jeff Hess’s show on KDHX many years ago. It set me on a France Gall odyssey. I bought albums and collections, and none of them had this song. I think her tone is probably my favorite female vocal tone, and she’s also one of my favorite singers in her delivery. This one is very different than some of the other stuff I associate with her but I think it’s still my favorite of hers.
20. Ely - “As Turbinas Estao Ligadas”
Now Again Records put out a collection called “Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas” and it’s got as much tone as the title boasts. Credit due to “vinyl archaeologist” Joel Stones for tracking down songs like these and putting them within reach. This is one among several favorites and a true hit.
21. Tulia - “Pali się (Fire of Love)”
Speaking of true hits: welcome to the world of EuroVision, where music is a medium for international competition. This song is Poland’s entry for 2019. We spent an amazing week with our friends Phil and Archie driving between Cambridgeshire and London singing along with all of the finalists of that year’s competition. It’s a fascinating idea, this vote-based international struggle turning into a final victor that somehow expresses the zeitgeist of ALL OF THOSE COUNTRIES TOGETHER — because it’s not just Europe, it’s Israel and Australia. Also amazing is that this isn’t just some scheme cooked up in the reality TV era: this has been going on for decades. In fact, France Gall was the EuroVision winner in 1965 — for Luxembourg!
22. Luigi Tenco - “Ciao Amore Ciao”
Likewise, this song was in international competition. It was sung by Egyptian-born French superstar Dalida. We saw an eponymous movie about her at the St. Louis International Film Festival in 2017 and she was a completely engrossing character. I’m not totally sold on this song as she sings it — but I love Luigi Tenco’s version. And man what a looker! He died young by his own hand, and she died too young by her own hand, and that is about as French as it gets.
23. Marijata - “I Walk Alone”
“This Is Marijata” is the sound of Ghana in 1976. I was talking about Marijata with Josh Weinstein recently, and he reminded me of this song and how much I dig it. It’s got that slow burn organ in the background, the slightly clumsy percussion in the foreground, those freighted vocals — but when it gets to the chorus, as the organ hook gives way to the horn hook, that’s when it truly hits its stride. And by the time we disappear into the fadeout, it has become fully epic.
24. Lijadu Sisters - “Life’s Gone Down Low”
To my ears it really feels like this song could have been released this year, rather than in 1976. What the hell was going on in West Africa that year? I feel like we could put together a great mix of songs just from that single year from Nigeria, Ghana, Benin and Ivory Coast. The Lijadu Sisters (Taiwo and Kehinde, actual identical twins) put out their first album in 1969; by their third album, “Danger,” the source of this song, they were huge stars in Nigeria and played with Ginger Baker, Art Blakey, and so on. They eventually moved to Harlem and lived together their whole lives, until Kehinde passed a little less than a year ago.
25. Os Kiezos - “Muxima”*
As mentioned, I heard this song in a video work by Alfredo Jaar at the Art Institute of Chicago. You can read about the piece here. I learned that “Muxima” is an Angolan folk song and in the video of the same title there are, I believe, 5 different versions of the song. One particular one – the one that pulled me into the room where the video was playing on loop – was a gorgeous vocal arrangement.  I even tried shazaming it. No dice. So I wrote it down and started looking for the song, the particular arrangement. I bought a collection of Angolan music because I saw the song on it. That’s the one you heard on this broadcast and it is a recording that I now really love. I periodically keep looking for other versions of the song, hoping I’ll come across that missing version though. I thought I got close this week when I found Duo Ouro Negro’s version. (Worth checking out!) That one from the video though, still haunts me! It’s been 9 years now, I wonder if I would recognize it but I think I would. I guess the next thing I can try is a shot in the dark email to Alfredo Jaar. This is and one other song share the top spot of “songs that got away” the other one is some beautiful song that was coming from a small radio from a group of old Puerto Rican guys who were playing cards on the sidewalk on South 3rd street in Williamsburg. We were touring through and staying with our friend in that neighborhood and as we were moving the van I heard this beautiful song coming off the sidewalk. Those guys had great taste.

Rules: answer all questions, add one question of your own and tag as many people as there are questions.
I was tagged by @alittlenarnian! Thank youuu ^_^
I’m just gonna do everyone a favor here and put this all under the cut because I thought way too deeply into pretty much every single one of these questions and I’m not gonna subject everyone to scrolling past all my nonsense.
1. Coke or Pepsi: I don't know, probably coke? I don't drink a lot of soda but I've always been a big fan of orange soda, myself. Or that one kind in the Coke place in Epcot c:
2. Disney or Dreamworks: I love both but I'm gonna have to go with Disney. It's had more influence over me, and I feel like most of the movies have way more than heart than a lot of what Dreamworks puts out (aside from HTTYD and Rise of the Guardians and the original 2D stuff like Spirit).
3. Coffee or Tea: Tea. Coffee makes me sick.
4. Books or Movies: This is hard because I love both so much but I'm gonna have to go with books. I love the visual beauty of movies but on the other hand, nothing compares to the feeling of pages between your fingers and that high you get from looking at words when you read a book, and the way you can imagine everything exactly as you want and no two personal renderings are ever exactly the same. That's cool. I like that.
5. Windows or Mac: Windows.
6. DC or Marvel: I've never been huge into the superhero scene but I'm gonna have to go with Marvel (though if it was a choice, I'd definitely pick The Incredibles universe).
7. X-Box or Playstation: Tough call but I'm gonna have to go with X-Box.
8. Dragon Age or Mass Effect: Dragon Age.
9. Night Owl or Early Riser: DEFINITELY night owl. I can't get up early for the life of me and when I do, I'm in a constant fog.
10. Cards or Chess: Cards because they're more flexible. You can play tons of different games with cards-- Go Fish, Solitaire, Old Maid, Blackjack. Chess is just chess. It's not as portable as a deck of cards, either.
11. Chocolate or Vanilla: Chocolate.
12. Vans or Converse: Converse.
13. Lavellan, Trevelyan, Cadash, or Adaar: No idea what any of that is tbqh
14. Fluff or Angst: Little bit of both never hurt anyone. All about balance, amirite?
15. Beach or Forest: Tough call but I kind of have to go with forest, actually??? Like don't get me wrong I adore the beach, it's gorgeous as all hell, but at the same time, it's like every time I go to the beach it's always super windy and crowded and you're either freezing cold or scorching hot and then you get sand in weird places. I kind of like the close-knit spaces of the forest and how close to nature I feel when I'm there, like on nature trails and stuff. I like all the trees looming over me-- they make me feel safe-- and the different flowers and creatures all around and all the different pathways you can take. It always feels like an adventure.
16. Dogs or cats: I love both but I lean a little bit more towards dogs just because I've grown up with them all my life. I like how you can rough-house with dogs (big dogs, anyways) and they'll just flop over and love on you. Cats never liked me but now that I've spent more time around them, they've really started growing on me more.
17. Clear skies or rain: Rain. Definitely rain. Nothing makes me happier than those days when you can just curl up on the couch in your pajamas with a bowl of soup and a movie marathon and the sky is all dark and there's a steady rain beating on the roof, maybe a little thunder and lightning, and you just snuggle close on the couch in a giant blanket and just ugh it's the absolute best and I adore it.
18. Cooking or eating out: I can't really cook for the life of me but if I had to choose, I'd pick cooking over eating out just because making food is better than putting on pants to go out someplace and eat. I don't always feel comfortable eating out anyways, for whatever reason. And at least when you (attempt) to cook something, not only do you get food but you also feel the accomplishment of having made something that tastes good (hopefully) and has a purpose.
19. Spicy food or mild food: I never used to be like this but spicy food has grown on me so I'm gonna pick that. I can only handle so much kick but I definitely enjoy how flavorful spicy food is over blander stuff.
20. Halloween/Samhain or Solstice/Yule/Christmas: UGH THIS IS SO HARD BUT I'M GONNA HAVE TO GO WITH CHRISTMAS. I adore Halloween just because it gives me an excuse to dress up where I'm not considered a geek, but then again I dress up year-round and kind of stopped giving a fuck what people think about it. Christmas is great, though. You get good food and lots of presents and can spend time with people you love and there's lights and happiness everywhere and great excuses to snuggle up on the couch with bae. Fills me so much warmth <3
21. Would you rather forever be a little too cold or a little too hot: A little too cold because at least that way I could always put on cozy socks or snuggle up in a blanket. If I'm too hot, there's only so much I can do and a finite number of clothes I can shed before I'm passed out on the tile ass naked with the refrigerator open.
22. If you could have any superpower, what would it be: Invisibility. I answered that really, really quickly but hey, it's not a sin to know what you want. So yes. Either invisibility or forcefields. Or both. Both is good. Invisibility would be great so I could sneak around or bypass awkward confrontations but at the same time, I'm very much a wallflower so it's kind of like I'm invisible already. Forcefields, on the other hand, could be really beneficial because I like my personal space and if anyone's coming too close, I can just be like *boop* nope-ity nope nope. I think the biggest benefit from forcefields, though, would be blocking myself from the wind. There is nothing I hate more than wind and if I could find any way to barricade myself from it so it wouldn't have to inconvenience me from doing what I need to do, that would be stupendous.
23. Animation or live action: Ugh this is a hard one and I don't know if I have a really definite answer for this one. It honestly just depends. Animation is a beautiful medium that I adore but some things are far more suited for live action. I guess if I had to choose, though, I'd go with animation since I feel like live action, at least in big budget fantasy, adventure, sci-fi, and action movies, are all animated to a degree anyways (I seriously miss the days when special effects makeup was still a big thing instead of the way everything's been these days, where everything is just computer generated. Not that CG isn't beautiful but I just miss the tangibility of special effects and prefer it over the painterly and sweeping CGI, though I mean there is a time and a place for both I suppose).
24. Paragon or Renegade: Again, no idea what that is.
25. Baths or showers: Showers. I'm too antsy to take baths anymore. Plus you can't take books in there unless you're deliberately trying to ruin them.
26. Team Cap or Team Iron Man: Team Cap.
27. Fantasy or Sci-Fi: Fantasy
28. Do you have three or four favourite quotes, if so, what are they: "I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I am not" - Kurt Cobain (This was actually my senior quote in high school, too :D) "It'll all be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end" (I honestly which I had a credit for this) "You're braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think" -AA Milne "How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard" -AA Milne (again) Basically all of AA Milne's quotes, even if I haven't heard them yet, I instantly love, okay?
29. Netflix or youtube: Tough call but youtube mainly because I don't have Netflix and youtube does not cost me money. Sure, you can't get full episodes most of the time but oh well.
30. Harry Potter or Percy Jackson: I've honestly never really been into either? My GSP class did a Greek mythology unit and we had to read The Lightning Thief and I just could not get into it whatsoever. If I had to choose, I guess I'd say Harry Potter solely because even though the Harry Potter series itself never really interested me all that much (I've only read and seen the first three but I could never get past the puke scene in the second one without nearly vomiting myself), I have to admit that Fantastic Beasts looks incredible and really captured my interest.
31. When you feel accomplished: When I get shit done, pretty much. I procrastine a lot but when I finally crack down on myself and make myself write that paper or that next chapter or get those supplies for that one cosplay or anything like that, I instantly feel prouder of myself for actually doing things rather than dreaming of them.
32. Star Wars or Star Trek: Again, I never really got into either but I'd have to go with Star Wars just because I know more about it and because Harrison Ford reminds me of my dad and that makes me happy.
33. Paperback or Hardback: Hardback. Paperbacks are great and all but there's something special about hardback books. They feel classic.
34. Horror or rom-com: Rom-com. Horror is good in small doses but gooey, sticky-sweet rom-com is like those strawberry candies you find at your grandma's house that you could always stand to have more of.
35. TV shows or movies: Ugh that's a tough call, too. On one hand, a lot of time and effort goes into movies but then TV shows are a little more digestible sometimes just because they're shorter increments but you get more out of it because it spans a much longer period of time and you can really expand on a story more in a show than you can in a two hour film. So I guess maybe both??? Can I do that? Can I pick both? Because I know if I try to bargain with myself to make a dead-set decision here, we're gonna be sitting here all night watching me go back and forth about this.
36. Spotify or Pandora: I don't use either so I don't really have a preference. I just like using the music I've downloaded onto my phone.
37. Zootopia or Inside Out: Zootopia because police.
38. Favourite book: The Chronicles of Narnia books by CS Lewis, hands down. I've read a lot of great books but no matter what, I always find myself coming back to Narnia. It's like a permanent part of my soul that just breaks down the door whenever I forget about it and forces itself back into my life.
39. Favourite flower: I really love red roses because they're just so romantic and red is my favorite color.
40. What field of study are you in (or aspire to be in): I'm working towards getting a bachelor's in creative writing so I guess you could say my field of study is English? I wanna write shit.
41. Song lyric you really love: Oh god, I have a lot but okay, here goes. 42. What’s your MBTI type: ISFP
43. What is your zodiac sign: Taurus
44. Where is your favourite place to go: My boyfriend's place because anywhere where he is is home and I love spending time with him no matter where we are or what we're doing.
45. Favourite stuffed animal as a kid: Okay, so this doesn't really constitute as a "stuffed animal", so to speak, but when I was a kid, I was incredibly attached to this baby doll my mom's mom had bought for me when I was born. I named her Baby Doll (real creative, I know) and took her everywhere with me, and slept with her every night for way longer than I'd like to admit. I loved her to pieces and still do, actually, but in a different way now than I did back then. When I was little, I was in love with her the same way I imagine a mother loves her child because to me, she was like my kid. Nowadays it's more like I love her because of all the joy she brought me as a kid and all the memories I made with her. I actually still have her and she hasn't fallen apart (completely) yet. Her painted facial features on her plastic head have started to fade a little bit and her the stuffing in her plushie body has already gone kind of limp and flat and her little outfit has turned gray (I think I tried burying her in the backyard once and she never recovered??? I accidentally dropped her in a river over the edge of a boat once, too. The kid's been through some shit, alright?) but I still look at her and see the same doll I was so grossly in love with and attached to when I was a little girl and I love that a lot.
46. Favourite icecream flavour: It's a toss-up between mint chocolate chip, which was my first ever favorite ice cream flavor, and chocolate chip cookie dough. Neopolitan is pretty great, too, for when I want the classics but can't decide on just one.
47. Chanel or Gucci: I could honestly care less about either but if I had to choose, Chanel just because Coco Chanel was pretty cool.
48. What’s your hogwarts house: Hufflepuff
49. Who’s your celebrity crush: Oh damn, here we go. Here's opening a can of worms you don't want to get me started on. I have a couple but the biggest and longest running is without a doubt William Moseley and there's a long and funny story behind this. Okay, so when I was in second grade, we read The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe as a class and did project assignments on it and shit (one of which I distinctly remember was that we had to draw a scene from the book so I chose the White Witch on her sleigh but for some reason the word "sledge" made me instantly think of "ledge" so it was basically a really shitty drawing of the White Witch flying through the sky on one of those construction beams??? It was really freaking weird, man). We watched the BBC version in class and I remember as the credits were rolling, my teacher shut off the TV screen and announced to us that Disney was releasing it's own version of the movie that Christmas so when the time came around, I had my mom go take me to see it because I liked the book enough to buy an entire boxed set at the next book fair and have always been a Disney freak so I was like "Let's fucking do it." So we went to the theater and I was having a good time enjoying myself and whatnot and then the battle scene came and I was honestly so thrown for a loop. Here I was, little eight year old me, terrified of how intense it was. I was shaking and horrified and I dragged my mom out of the theater. It was awful. I almost didn't go back to see it again but I felt unsatisfied having not seen the rest of the movie so I had her take me back, determined to sit through the entire thing this time. I still ended up covering my face during the battle scenes but when I finally did peek through my fingers, there on the huge silver screen was none other than Peter freaking Pevensie slaying a bunch of poor unfortunate souls and looking like a sexy mofo in the process. Instant heart eyes. And so the madness began. I kept it a secret for a little while before one day, my parents and I were at one of the Disney resorts (it was either the Beach Club or the Boardwalk Hotel, I don't remember which-- it was whichever one that has Cape May Cafe because I think we ate in there for dinner or something). At the front desk, they had those Disney Adventures mini magazines and so I got a free one and guess who was on the cover for that month? William freaking Moseley. There was an interview on the inside, too, that I thought must've been fate because it was smack dab in the middle and there was a cardstock ad right between the two pages so you could easily flip to the thing. The whole thing about my crush got out among my friends at school pretty quickly (when I told them, for a second they thought I had a crush on a kid in one of the other classes named Peter) and the Narnia thing just kind of took off. It waxed and waned over the years but the biggest comeback wasn't until eighth grade. I was on Thanksgiving break and my parents were flipping through the channels when they found Prince Caspian on TV. By then, I had kind of forgotten about Narnia and was like "Oh yeah, I remember this movie! I loved these movies!" and so I sat down and watched the rest of it and that's when everything came flooding back. I spiraled into a pit of insanity and quickly gained a reputation as "that Narnia girl." My freshman year binder was a Narnia shrine with William Moseley pictures pasted all over it. I followed him on social media (which wasn't as big a thing before) and dreamed about him constantly and thought any and all little coincidences were proof that we were meant to be together (even if he is ten years older than me). But I mean, I was a kid. What the hell do I know? Things actually ended up getting a little too far, though. When I found out William Moseley had started dating his Run costar Kelsey Chow, I was 110% heartbroken. Like, I was watching Prince Caspian the one night and just broke down in hysterical tears during the end credits because oh my god we would never be together now and I was so jealous that she was dating him and not me. It was honestly probably getting a little unhealthy so that's when I decided to end the entire Narnia thing once and for all because I had spiraled far too deep and needed to separate myself from the concept. I took a few long years away from the thing before cautiously getting sucked back in about a year and a half ago, I guess it was. I didn't want to get back into Narnia, initially, because I knew that would mean reacquainting myself with the whole William Moseley thing and I didn't want to spiral back into that pit again. I felt like a recovering alcoholic getting invited to a bar. I wanted to go, but I didn't want to relapse. I guess in a way I sort of did for a short period of time there? This time I was more cautious to separate the character from the actor, though, and so far it's been doing pretty well. The only time I almost slipped was when I was this close to being an extra in The Little Mermaid and meeting him, but it didn't work out because school got in the way of my traveling to Savannah for the filming. My heart still hurts a little bit seeing that carnival scene and knowing I could've been one of the faces in that crowd. But anyways, yeah. I think it's safe to say William Moseley was definitely my biggest and probably my most detrimental celebrity crush??? It's all water under the bridge now, pretty much. I still have the Narnia fanfics but I'm not as overwhelmingly gaga for him as I once was now that I have my own boyfriend and life is great. I realize now that this explanation was probably way longer than it needed to be but oh well. Whatever. It was worth typing all out.
50. The Chronicles of Narnia or Lord of the Rings: The Chronicles of Narnia. Lord of the Rings is good and all but I kept zoning out during the movies and never dared to read the books (TOLKIEN, YOU SPEND LIKE FIFTEEN PAGES DESCRIBING ONE TREE. COOL IT, BRO). I think the above explanation shows how pretty obvious the Narnia bias is here, though.
51. In the car, radio or phone playlist: Phone. I never get the aux cord but when I do, it's a lot of alternative rock. I have lots of playlists for different moods or themes, though, like one of all songs that remind me of my boyfriend in some way, calming songs, "fuck yes" songs that make me wanna headbang and break a window, shit like that. Plus, phone playlists are portable so that's nice.
52. Favorite Disney Princess? Rapunzel! She was the first princess I really felt a strong connection to and I honestly wish I would've had her in my life as a little girl. I will forever be a massive Tangled nut, though, and literally nothing feels better than being able to run around dressed as my favorite princess and living out my dreams. I feel so free and overwhelmingly happy when I cosplay Rapunzel. She's like my happy place and a lot of the time, I find myself having to pry myself away from her sometimes so I can give attention to my other cosplays. Like a super strong magnet, though, I always gravitate straight back to Rapunzel. I will never not love my beautiful little sunshine princess <3 <3 <3
Tagging: no one because this was way too long and I sure as hell am not tagging 52 people. Do it if you want to but I'm not recruiting half a hundred people to fill out these questions that I thought way too much about.

6 Insane Ways Movies Are Trying To Be Authentic
A great artist knows that the most important details are the ones their audience might not necessarily notice — like the soft clouds in the background of the Mona Lisa, or the surprisingly detailed scribblings in John Doe’s notebook in Se7en, or the recipe for The Antidote that I’ve been hiding in my articles for the past few years. (“Antidote for what?” you might be asking. Don’t worry. All will become clear soon.) This is especially true of movies, that often hide the weirdest and most interesting work in the places nobody bothered to check. For example…
6
Everything In Zootopia Is Moving All The Time
What most people don’t realize about animated movies is that most of the frame isn’t actually animated. There’s usually a single static background with a few animated cells on top of them — this is clear in low-budget TV cartoons, where the moving frames tend to have a slightly different color from the immobile background, but it’s more cleverly hidden in big-budget Disney movies because of that aforementioned big budget. The reason they don’t animate the entire frame is, of course, because that would be insanely fucking time-consuming. It’s way easier to have one still picture while Batman or Scooby-Doo conduct their slapstick antics on an entirely different layer.
Unless you’re making Zootopia, in which case — for the first time in Disney history — absolutely everything is moving. And by “everything” I mean, in fact, “all the things.” Every shadow shimmers. Every car sputters. Every strand of hair twitches and wafts in the wind. All 30,000 leaves on that tree are moving, thanks to technology developed just for this movie.
Part of the reason this is so crazy is, as made clear in the first paragraph of this entry, it’s completely unneeded. As humans, we’re pretty dumb, and aren’t likely to notice that maybe that bush back there doesn’t have an ant crawling on it. But Disney had to push the boundaries, just like they always have, to create a living, breathing, utterly convincing world that is so magical and wondrous that it never even had to get around to explaining what the hell the predators eat in this universe. A fox can’t live on blueberries, guys.

John Carpenter Hinted Who The Thing Was With Eye Light
The Thing is a movie about a shape-shifting alien who infiltrates a team of rugged, hairy, stern men. The interstellar beast picks them off one by one, feasting on their sweet, succulent, deeply heterosexual juices, until only the manliest — Kurt Russell and Keith David — are left alive. One of the nerdiest film debates in modern pop culture is about the order in which this happens — The “thing” is indistinguishable from a human once it takes that human’s form, so a lot of the tension comes down to figuring out who can be saved and who needs to be consumed through cleansing fire. It’s sorta like being out to dinner with a bunch of your friends and one of them keeps farting.
Director John Carpenter specifically shot the movie so it’s unclear in what order who gets infected, and whether Russell or David are infected at the end. But it turns out there’s one detail that Carpenter and cinematographer Dean Cundey kept secret until recently, and it has to do with eye light.
“Eye light” is a camera trick that puts a slight gleam in an actor’s eye, giving them slightly more life. You can see it here, with Keith David’s character Childs:
And here with Kurt Russell’s MacReady:
But not with David Clennon’s Palmer — who, in this scene, is revealed to be The Thing.
…Which, again, was intentional. That’s supposed to be the hint. Now, does this completely change the movie? Spoiler alert: Nope. I rewatched it, specifically watching for eye light stuff, and I didn’t notice any great foreshadowing or crazy hints. But it’s quite possible I’m just not smart enough to put the whole picture together. Since this is a whole new tool available for our collective movie-watching, feel free to post your wacky eye-light-based theories on my Facebook wall, after you’ve rewatched the movie of course.

Gangs Of New York Has Period-Appropriate Dialects
People love to offer their opinions on whether movie accents are “good” or “bad” because people love to pretend that they’re smarter than they are. A lot of folks ripped apart Charlie Hunnam’s accent in Pacific Rim because he talks like a mush-mouthed victim of a botched neural surgery, apparently not realizing that his real accent also sounds fake (also also that movie is perfect, and none shall dare criticize it before me). Everyone talks weird, and it all sounds insane, so can anyone really say what a “good” accent even sounds like?
Of course, and Tim Monich, the dialect coach for Gangs Of New York, managed to do the impossible by researching dead dialects — that is, ways of speaking that no living person had ever heard with their own ears — and teaching it to modern actors. “But how do you research a dead dialect?” Easily! Well, no, not easily at all — with incredible difficulty, in fact: Monich studied old poems and newspaper articles that were mocking the dialects to try and deduce the way people of the era spoke. Then he forced Liam Neeson and Leonardo DiCaprio to talk that way.
At one point, Neeson’s character called a bunch of his enemies “nancy boys,” only for Monich to clarify that the correct term for the era and location was “Miss Nancies.” Which was a huge relief for all the 19th-century New York hooligans in the audience, who totally would’ve noticed that sort of thing.
youtube
That set points to something else pretty cool about the film’s development. Those buildings you see in the background? They haven’t existed in over a hundred years, so Scorsese had most of 1860s New York rebuilt from scratch in Rome, because “had most of 1860s New York rebuilt from scratch in Rome” is the kind of predicate you can be the subject of when your name is Martin Scorsese. I’m allowed to make those kinds of stupid grammar jokes when my entry is about dialects, okay?
Anyway, here he is poking around the place, rambling like a crazy old man. The poor camera operator can’t keep track of what he’s even talking about. That is one of my favorite videos in the world. I honestly like it better than Gangs Of New York.
Oh, and speaking of dialects…

Arrival Makes Way More Sense Than It Needs To
Arrival is a sci-fi movie about figuring out an alien language and, spoiler alert, using it to see the future (it’s also one of the best movies I’ve ever seen oh my god go watch it so good). And since I brought it up, I know what you’re thinking: “Wow — did they actually invent a language that I can use to see the future?”
No. But they did do absolutely everything else. You know those weird circles that the aliens use to communicate? Yeah, that functions as a consistent language. You could learn to read and write in it just from watching the movie enough, if you’re that kind of person.
Then, they wrote an actual computer program that could interpret the language they made up. The stuff you see in the movie where a computer analyzes the symbol? That’s not just random, science-looking animations. That’s a program, written just for the movie, interpretting a language that was also written exactly for the movie, in real time. Science consultant Stephen Wolfram even came up with a scientific explanation for how the aliens travel. It involves quantum! All this despite the fact that 99 percent of audiences would’ve been fine with the explanation I just gave (which, if you’ve forgotten, is just the words “It involves quantum!”).
But you see, it really seems like this movie was made for that one percent of geniuses in the theater. There’s even a part later in the movie when Amy Adams is standing in front of a white board covered in physics jargon:
All those equations are relevant to the problems her and Jeremy Renner’s characters are facing in the movie right then, but — here’s the kicker — that wasn’t what was on the board when they shot it. Due to an oversight during shooting, the whiteboard was accidentally covered in high-school level physics, so they had Wolfram come up with a bunch of equations to use and then super-imposed them into that scene with computers (a process made especially difficult because of Amy Adams’ hair).
All so that every physicist who saw this movie could finally enjoy a sci-fi flick without ripping their own hair out in frustration.

The Witch: All The Materials And Music Are Authentic For the Time Period
If you haven’t seen The Witch, stop reading this article and go watch it right now. (Then come back and finish reading. I need your click-dollars to finance my underground squirrel-fighting ring.) If you’ve seen The Witch, then oh my god, how good was it? Sorry for fanboying out for this entire column. I promise I’ll get myself under control for next month.
Part of the reason people love The Witch is because it’s so beautiful. Well, there’s a reason for that: Like Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon, it was shot almost entirely with natural light. Which, for indoor scenes, meant they had to use as many candles as possible.
I say “almost” entirely because of one scene involving a crow, which had to use a flickering lightbulb, since fire would’ve scared the crow. If you haven’t seen the movie, I’m not going to spoil the scene with the crow. If you have seen the movie, then there is not a sliver of a chance in hell that you’ve forgotten the scene with the crow.
On top of that, all the music was recorded with period-appropriate instruments, using period-appropriate techniques. Which is not something anybody would ever notice but certainly helps the movie feel unique. Even the story itself — and lots of the dialogue — is based on real accounts of witchcraft and possession from 17th-century Massachusetts. When Caleb is in the throes of a fever/possession, his delirious ranting is word-for-word the rantings of 17th-century children who were, allegedly, possessed by Satan. Making this officially the most metal movie anyone has ever seen. Also I’m going to move on because 400-year-old dead children aren’t very funny.

Meryl Streep Can Do Everything
Meryl Streep is so good that it’s become a punchline. People genuinely worry that she’s too burdened by how good she is, and that people expect perfection from her and take it for granted when she delivers. And after some research, I’ve figured out her secret: She’s not actually pretending. Like Stanley Kubrick and Akira Kurosawa, she’s doing all this shit for real.
The first, and most famous, example is her portrayal of Sophie in Sophie’s Choice. First, she learned German. Then she learned Polish. Then she learned to speak German in a Polish accent. Roger Ebert (whose opinions on film are unassailable) described it as “the only accent [he has] ever wanted to hug,” and I don’t even know what that means, but it sounds pretty positive?
But okay, accents are whatever — we’ve seen lots of accents in this article already. Fine! How about the freaking violin? That’s the hardest instrument to learn, according to people who argue about this sort of thing on the internet, and she learned to play in a matter of weeks.
Most recently, for the movie Ricki And The Flash, Streep learned to play guitar… from Neil Young, because that’s who teaches you guitar when you’re Meryl Streep. Jesus, between Streep and Scorsese, it’s becoming increasingly clear to me that rich people just seem to have more opportunities to do cool stuff than people like me. Maybe I should become rich? Anyway, Streep then practiced with a band in a bar for months. By the time she actually got around to shooting the damn movie, she had ripped her fingers open on the strings.
Alright, enough gushing about cool stuff I like. Let’s end this article in the best way any article could ever end: with a video of Neil Young and Meryl Streep jamming out on a stratocaster that probably cost more than my fucking car.

Belasco au (everything is red)
@djinmer4
A big white mansion, in the L.A, opens its door to each solstice to celebrate a night with music, dance and a good times, and many are in the proverbial guest list if they find said place.
“So, this is a party that is that exclusive?” asked Kitty arching a brown to Kurt.
“Yes, an associate of mine, does this every solstice” replied Kurt not wanting to give many details either because it is too gory or because he likes to see Kitty mull over the smallest things.
Kitty is wearing a blue dress with a low cut on the back, her hair is tied up in an elegant bun(It was necessary Yana, Dani and Rhane to do it, well, not really, but it was fun nonetheless, and much better than having Emma Frost brushing your hair, Ororo is in Wakanda with her husband and Jean is not Jean) illustrating that Kitty Pryde is no longer a teenager.
Kurt Wagner looks like a typical Hollywood heartthrob, with his raven hair, cheekbones, deep blue eyes, good physic, and a killer smile(pun intended) many women look at him with lust, which, it affects nothing on him.
“You know, you do look in a white tuxedo, you always did” Kitty remember the times she saw Kurt with a white tuxedo, it was in his birth party.
“Thank you, You do look astonishing tonight” Kitty smile with confidence and accept the arm Kurt offers as they enter the mansion, there´s good quality jazz playing and a miscellaneous of people are dancing and having a good time.
“Shall we?” no words were needed after this, the music, the light, it was everything perfect. They dance all the music available. After a minute, someone decided to play Beauty and Beast´s song, it was rather fitting.
“You dance very well, Kurt” compliment Kitty as she rests her head on his shoulder, a replica exact of the famous scene of Disney´s Beauty and the Beast.
“Hey, I´m a Demon Lord, I have to know those things” jokes Kurt softly happy that Kitty is this close, this comfortable with him, “ I think I never danced with you before, what a shame”
She giggled and kissed him, maybe, it was the effect of such dance marathon, but right now, Kitty feels overjoy and happy like never before. Actually, this is a thought that did make her stop for a moment when was the last time she was this happy?
I don´t know. This type of happiness never happen before, I heard about but it was never with me.
“Do you want to rest?” Kurt suggested and Kitty nods. They go to a section reserved for the guest to rest “ Are you having fun?”
“Yes, I´m, thank you, Kurt, for taking me. I just realize that I never really dance with anyone” her words have hide meaning and Kurt didn´t pressure her to speak, it would be hypocritical of him otherwise.
“I´m glad, the night is rather beautiful, Be like a peacock and dance with all of your beauty,” said Kurt who is reward with Kitty laughing uncontrollably.
“True, hey, I wanna grab wine to us, for some reason I don´t the waitress will come to us” a waitress mile and miles away from them clung to his crucifix and going far away from Kurt and Kitty as humanly possible as the others are following the lead.
Kurt can´t help with a chuckle at this and make an innocent face, just like Kurt Wagner would do.
“Yeah, why is that?” Kitty only rolls her eyes and darted to grab something to Kurt and herself, the food table is filled with food that screams money.
“Should I eat or worry about the fees?” asked Kitty looking at a very well made salmon that seem something only a top chef could dream to make “yeah, YOLO, ”
As she starts to choose the eligible food, someone clear the throat to speak with Kitty, it was a fairly attractive man, with reddish-brown hair, blue eyes and is bulky.
“Hi, doll face” Kitty cringe at his voice, but, don´t want to make a scene. “ do you want to dance with me?”
“Oh, let me answer this in the simplest way possible: NO, NO, NO” then she whispered, “ did you get it?”
The man looks furious and out of the blue grab her arm, only to Kitty to have to phase quickly.
“Dollface, I want just want a dance, why you have to be such a bitch?”
“Well, jackass, why you have to be such jackass?” The guy tried to grab her again and Kitty slaps him, the food trail she did care was dropped and the woman takes this chance to get away from him.
“Jackass, why I´m not surprised?” asked Kitty returning with empty hands to the table where Kurt is. Furious, then upset and a bit let down, even in this new universe, people like that man still exist.
Kurt spends 15 minutes calming her down, Kitty starts to crying, not because of the man, per say, but what he represents, how many men tried to force Kitty in to do things she didn´t want? How many men tried to manipulate Kitty in some form?
“Sorry, I ruined our night”
“No, you didn´t, this isn´t your fault, Katzchen, ” Kurt sometimes worries about Kitty attitude ‘try to kill me, I like it’ as she labels it, it raises some concern “ we did have a great time, but most importantly, you have a good time”
“Yes, I did” she dried her tears “sorry”
“Don´t apologize, Katzchen, is alright, do you want to go home?”
“Our home?” Kurt feels his heart beat faster than normal to such statement “sure, we can watch Netflix, and only because I like you a lot, we can watch Paranormal activity” Kitty smile at this.
“ The let´s go home, Kurt, I think I dance enough for my shoes”
“Then let´s go home”
Kurt teleport them back to home, only Kitty would think Limbo as home, as she is in the room looking for her comfy clothes(Kurt allowed Kitty to let some clothier in his home, actually, he was over the moon with the idea) she noticed Kurt giving that smile. That dangerous smile.
“Kurt?”
“I have something to do, I´ll be back” and in a brimstone smoke, Kurt is gone.
Meanwhile, in the party, the reddish brown hair man seems to get lucky with a gorgeous red hair that has no time to waste, the man can´t believe the luck, a hot red hair wanting his attention, oh, Andy hit jackpot.
As the man and the astonishing woman are almost reaching to the parking lot, where his car is when a smoke of brimstone appear and the humor of the red hair change completely. She lay prostrate on the floor
“Lord Belasco, my Lord, what brings you here?” from horny red hair to coward red hair it all take a minute to Belasco.
“Rose from the ground Succubus, your kind did hear my words”
“Yes, no harm shall be inflicted on your human, no Succubus will dare to disobey, Lord Belasco”
“Good, now, run, my problem is with this man” the red hair did what was told leaving Andy behind. Andy is not the brightest tool in the stage, but, even him can notice when something is not right.
“Who are you?” snap the angry man that lost a great night.
“Nice question, I think your date called me Lord Belasco, but you seem very slow, so let me introduce” In a snap of his finger, the parking lot shape himself to a hellish vision of a nightmare.
Well, it was something that makes Andy fright, it just bored Lord Belasco.
A pair of hand, dead and putrified hand hold Andy to the ground, against his will, as another hand silent his mouth.
“Oh, you scream so loudly, how boring, now, do you get the gist of Who Am I?” asked Kurt smiling cruelly. Andy can only nod and muffed sounds escape his mouth.
“Do you know why Am I here? Well, men like you I see every day, the mindset no means yes, is not original, this disgusts me very much, however, what makes me angry is that you made her cry” Andy scream or tried to scream when Kurt reveal his true form.
Red skin, horns, red eyes and his tail. And to top off, his voice is no longer human. Andy is crying and screaming.
“I could do many things with you, uhm…Prometheus´s story does seem nice? How about having your organs being eating by birds, having they grown again just to see the endless cycle?”
Andy shakes his head. Trying to plead with Kurt.
“No, oh, so No to you means just no? what a novel idea, you should have considered this before” Kurt smirk nasty and remove the putrified hand from Andy´s mouth. Hellfire evolves Andy hurting his skin, his organs, bones, and soul.
“I promise, I´ll never bother any women ever again, I swear, please let me go, please” Andy pleads with Kurt. For his part, Kurt is just looking into his eyes. red and puffy as Kitty´s
“A man can not often know the intention of a woman until seen a demon from a very close distance.” said in a demonic voice “ however, I´m in great mood, so I´ll give you a chance to prove your words, but heed my word, Anders Green, if you do that again, your soul will be sent to Limbo to an endless torture, and with Several Demons”
“I promised, I promised” Andy is laying on the ground saying this word over and over again not realizing that Kurt is already gone and that the hellish dimension is gone as well. His body is well.
Pathetic human.
Kurt returns home, his departure last at most 4 minutes, and he put his old red cape and crackle his joints.Kitty spots him before he could change back to his ‘human’ form, somehow, she doesn´t seem afraid.
“Kurt, is everything alright?”
“Yeah, it is, I exchange words with that man, don´t worry, he is still alive, so which, Paranormal Activity, we will see tonight”
“Ok, how about the first one? If I manage to understand which is the first one”
