If this is Undertaker’s doing, I’d say this is very evil and cruel. Imagine taking out the characteristics that comprise Ciel, his surroundings and the people around him and make it a joke just to make him lose his mind. Building a replica of the manor, educating children that are similar to the Phantomhive servants, to cloning Ciels. If the former reaper really cared for the Phantomhives as he claimed to be then something is really wrong in the picture. Somehow my head canon (or the collective head canon) that he’s related to the family is crumbling. You’d do this to exact revenge on someone you really despise not to salvage your family. But yes, he’s learned to be spiteful throughout the centuries.

Or is it Ciel’s older twin brother’s plan all along, an army of himself?

Hi I wanted to ask if you noticed as well that Sebastian really looks different on the recent chapter? I don't know, but it does not look like Sebastian at all, unlike the other characters whose looks remained the same (maybe even better, especially O!Ciel and Baldroy's design). But Sebastian on the other hand, looks like his design was forgotten and drawn from memory.

Same! Same!!! When my sister and I first saw chapter 176 the first thing we pointed out was that it seemed like Yana’s art style changed. I also agree that especially Ciel and Bard seem to look better! So there’s a clear change there. But Sebas.......I wouldn’t say it’s better or worse, but it’s definitely different. One of my intrusive thoughts was even: “OH NOOO, is Yana so busy she even left Sebas to her assistants?”

Below are some comparisons between Sebas in chapter 176 (left) and anywhere else in a similar angle (right).

I can’t really put my finger on it, but I think the most distinct difference is the nose? In chapter 176, Sebastian’s nose seems less defined because except for en profil, and tilted angles, Yana doesn’t give the nose an outline.

So........I made Sebas go some Rhinoplasty here...... does he look more similar to Yana’s old art style now?

Although I don’t speak or read Japanese, I’ve seen some posts saying that Bard’s actual insult was closer to “pretty boy,” and thus an attack on Sebastian’s manliness (as if that has anything to do with one’s strength 🙄). In other words, it sounds like the original put-down was linked more directly to toxic masculinity. @chibimyumi I hope it’s okay if I tag you, but is that the gist of it?

Lost in Translation V

At the beginning when I first met the three Phantomhive servants, they were little more than a source of annoyance to me. They felt like foils inserted just to be juxtaposed against Sebas, to show how oh-so-competent the demon butler is.

But now... they're my babies.

Something that gave me a real heart ache was when Bard had just woken up in chapter 176, and he said:

…そうだった、オレはまた…　生き延びちまったんだった…

... sou datta, ore wa mata... ikinobi chimattan datta...

... yeah right, yet again... I managed to survive, dang it...

In Japanese there's a grammatical construction which incorporates regret or dismay in a verb. If you've drank alcohol, you can just say "sake wo nonda". It is a neutral statement. However, if you add "shimatta" to it, you express regret or negativity. The listener would immediately know you'd rather not have drank it. Maybe you're trying to abstain from alcohol, but shit happened.

In Bard's case, he also used this construction, signifying that he'd maybe rather not have managed to survive.

Something else of interest is the word choice of 生き延びる (ikinobiru・manage to survive). In Japanese there are among others two words for "surviving":

生き延びる (ikinobiru・manage to survive) - This type of survival refers to actively having worked for survival. It is not by chance that someone survives.

生き残る (ikinokoru・survive) - This type of survival means that among a lot of people who have died, someone remains alive. It is more of a passive survival.

That Bard should use the active verb of survival means that he fought hard for his life. It wasn't some divine power that bestowed "mercy" or "luck" upon him or anything. But then by adding the "chimatta", he expresses regret/dismay...

This makes one wonder whether Bard is not suffering from survivor's guilt, like his young master is. Does Bard regret having fought for life? Is he perhaps actively suicidal?

As briefly discussed in this post, the Japanese fandom wonders what achievement of Bard’s earned him a job at the Phantomhive household. Could it be this active endeavour for survival that caught Sebastian's attention? We now know he wasn't just "lucky".

Was it just Bard's exceptional strategic mind which secured him his life? Or did some "self-defense for survival" in the Plank of Carneades fashion happen perhaps?
