“Do you ever think about the future?” Jake asks out of the blue one day. They’re both hanging out in Charlie’s apartment, playing video games and trying to prevent Otto from getting into things he’s not supposed to get into, and the question after a long stretch of comfortable silence catches Charlie off guard.

“Like in hockey, or in general?” he asks.

“Both, I guess.” Jake shifts slightly so he’s facing him.

“Oh. I mean, I guess a little? I probably should more, but also, like, I’m 22.”

Jake shrugs. “Fair enough.” He has that look on his face, like he’s getting in his own head again, so Charlie opens his arms up for a hug, which Jake accepts without hesitation.

“Why do you ask?” Charlie says, and Jake sighs.

“I was thinking about what comes after hockey, I guess,” he says. “And during. I just, god, I want to retire as a Bruin so badly, you know?”

Charlie nods. “I know. I do, too.”

“It’s like, I can’t imagine myself on any other team. I can’t imagine being on a team without you.”

“That might be the most romantic thing you’ve ever said to me, babe,” Charlie laughs.

Jake punches his shoulder. “Shut up, I’m trying to be serious here,” he protests. “Like, what happens if I get traded?”

Charlie wants to promise that won’t happen, but he knows he can’t. He knows how the league works, trades are a regular part of it all, and it’s rare for players to play their whole career with one team. Even Torey isn’t a Bruin anymore, and even though it wasn’t a trade, it still stings.

“Maybe we’d be traded together,” he says instead.

“Oh, please, they love you here. You watch, someday number 73 is gonna be hanging from the rafters in the Garden,” Jake promises. “You’ll be a legend, just like Bergy and everyone else.”

Charlie blushes at that. It’s far too early to be thinking about retiring his number, he still has a long career ahead of him, but he does have to admit the thought is pretty nice. He also elects not to point out that Bergy’s number isn’t retired just yet.

“And 74 is gonna be right up there next to me,” he says eventually.

“You mean my number will be in the rafters, or am I gonna be on the ice next to you for your ceremony?” Jake laughs, and Charlie pulls him in for a tighter hug, kissing the top of his head.

“Both.”

One of the reasons he fell in love with Jake is his ability to make the best out of any situation:  losing streaks, flight delays, even the flu -- where there is adversity, there is Jake, taking five minutes to mope and then finding a way to make it work.  None of that however prepared Charlie for walking into the ‘nutrition chambers’ as their captors-slash-hosts call them and finding a small ice rink sat squarely in the middle with the Zbork wooshing through the ice, hockey sticks in their many-tentacled hands.

Jake snorts. “I’m a day away from convincing the captain that nothing beats watching a game live in TD Garden. And then they will want to take us home. You just wait and see.”

hey Wil, I know you're a Kings fan, but are you rooting for anyone in particular out of the final four? any thoughts on this rollercoaster of a playoff season?

I’ve loved this playoff season. The parity era is great for hockey, I think, because we aren’t seeing many boring blowouts, and every inch of every game is contested at the highest level.

I’ve been cheering for former Kings players who I enjoyed watching, so I’ve been pulling for Carolina (Justin Williams) and even San Jose (Martin Jones). 

My only strong opinion on the final four, though, is anyone but Boston. As an Angeleno, I’ve had enough teams from Boston winning championships to last me a lifetime.

10. How do you find new fic?

Kudos sort on ao3, filtering out the tags I hate. 😞 In small fandoms (e.g. hockey rpf), I'll just try anything that's newly posted on ao3 that seems interesting. Occasionally rec lists, but generally only with a new fandom or pairing. I always trust @chaospitals recs - we have been fic cohorts for a Long Time.

23. What do you wish more fic authors would do?

Only post finished fic. (Sorry! Sorry.) If you're uploading weekly chapters, obviously that's cool! If everything isn't beta'd or edited yet, no problem! But please, why do you upload pieces of something that you don't even have outlined, and promise regular updates of stuff you haven't written??? PLEASE

(I'm not saying don't post content!! Just be like. "Here's a snippet/drabble, I have no idea if there's gonna be anything else." SORRY I'M SO SORRY)

24. What do you wish more fic authors would stop doing?

Chris found himself thinking that he’d give Charlie extra sweet bread, if he had any. “You need extra, you’re so skinny.”

Perhaps that was the wrong thing to say, because Charlie’s face darkened immediately and turned down towards his bucket. He tried to backtrack as quick as he could, not willing to let this conversation die. “But I mean, you already been looking better just being here a few days. It’s been good for you, I think.”
