I started playing around with UTAU and came across Kumi Hitsuboku by Cubialpha who has a really good UST. This is my first UTAU song so it’s really...messy right now.

Kumi Hitsuboku

First Impression

Kumi is another UTAU that I've known about for a while. She was first created around the time I was getting in to UTAU, but I didn't really hear of her until a few years later. Like the previous UTAU reviewed, this is an older UTAU that's somehow still alive in 2017, which is always great to see. Also, the voicer is from the state as me which is cool.

Voice

I'm a sucker for UTAU with a good tone, and that's what Kumi has. Generally, I find Kumi's voice to be a smooth, bright vocal to listen to; something consistent throughout her many, and I mean many, banks.

As of now, Kumi has a total of 17 voicebanks avaliable for download! That's actually crazy. What's nice about this is that these banks tend to be HQ, allowing for ease of use when you'd like her to sing―whether it be Japanese, English, or even Thai.

However, with all the languages Kumi supports, we do hear a bit on an accent. I'm not going to cover every voicebank/language due to sheer number, but throughout her banks there is the tinge of American. That's not to say that her accent is horrible or below par―because that's not the case; I don't even mind her accent because of what a great tone she has―but with all the capabilities Kumi has, it's hard to expect her accent to be perfect every time.

I'd love see an updated main Japanese bank (and more English covers) in the future!

Design

While I love Kumi, I'll have to admit I'm not the biggest fan of her design. Her design tends to give me "magical girl" vibes, which isn't bad, but I don't like how it was executed. With the default design, it feels rather plain despite a lot going on....? I feel as if this is might come from how much of the same blue there is―from her long hair, to her leggings and arm warmers.

However, Kumi's design by pearl works perfectly. It incorporates the feel I get from Kumi, without letting anything be drowned out (and as well as being really stylish and cute!). The use of more red in regards to her leggings and arm warmers are a really nice touch as well. Kumi's default design isn't horrible, but frankly, I'm a big fan of this version and would love to see it drawn more.

Rating

If you want it, Kumi probably has it. She’s another great UTAU that’s stood the test of time, and I’m so happy to see that. While I don’t like her main design that much, she has one that I adore―so I’m fine with that. Feel free to check her out and maybe download one of her many banks while you’re at it.
