Who were parent and siblings of Ravana
The parents of Rāvaṇa were Viśravas (Brahmin) and Kaikasī (Rakshas). Viśravas is the son of Pulastya Brahma, one of the mind born son of the creator Brahma.
What were the names of Ravana's brothers and sisters?
The lineage of Viśravas is explained in detail in Chapter 8 of Upodghata Pada of Brahmanda Purana.
38-40: Viśravas married Devavarṇinī, the daughter of Brihaspati, Puṣpotkaṭā and Vākā, the daughters of Mālyavān, Kaikasī, the daughter of Mālin. Listen to his children begot of these. Devavarṇinī gave birth to Vaiśravaṇa the eldest son.
44-46: On seeing him, his father said "This is Kubera(the ugly bodied one)". He was Kubera on account of his deformed body. He was thus marked by his name. Since he was the son of Viśravas and also due to his resemblance, he would be known by the name Vaiśravaṇa.
47. Kaikasī gave birth to Rāvaṇa, Kumbhakarṇa and śūrpaṇakhā, a daughter. Vibhīṣaṇa is the fourth among her children.
55-56. Mahodara, Prahasta, Mahāpārśva and Khara were the sons of Puṣpotkaṭā. She had a daughter (named) Kumbhinasī. Also Triśiras Dūṣaṇa and Vidyujjihva the Rākṣasā are remembered as the sons of Vākā. There was a daughter named Anupālikā.
57. Thus these ten Rākṣasās, the descendants of Pulastya, were of very cruel activities. They were of very terrible pursuits ever since their birth. All of these were unassailable even to the devas.
Hence from the above excerpt of Brahmanda Purana, it is clear that Rāvaṇa had thirteen siblings(10 brothers and 3 sisters). They were:
Kubera
Kumbhakarṇa
śūrpaṇakhā
Vibhīṣaṇa
Mahodara
Prahasta
Mahāpārśva
Khara
Kumbhinasī
Triśiras
Dūṣaṇa
Vidyujjihva
Anupālikā
From verse 57, we know that only ten of these are of cruel activity and other four are not. But it is not mentioned who are those cruel descendants.
In addition to the other answers, it is also important to trace the lineage of Kaikasi to understand Ravana's adharmic actions.
A Pishacha (wicked ghostly cannibal) named Aj had a daughter named Jantudhanaa. She married Rakshasa (fierce cannibalistic younger son of Kashyapa and Khashaa) and had a daughter named Yatudhana. In turn, Yatudhana gave birth to Heti, Praheti and 8 others [Ref: Brahmanda Purana Upodghaata paada 7.43-90]. All her descendants are called Yatudhana-Rakshasas.
Heti’s descendants were Malyavan, Sumali and Mali. Kaikasi (daughter of Yatudhana-Rakshasa Sumali) married Vishrava (son of the pious Rishi Pulastya). Their children were Ravana, Kumbhakarana, Surphanka and Vibhishana [Ref: Ramayana 7.4-5, 7.9]. They and their descendants were the Kaikasi-Rakshasas or simply Rakshasas.
Thus, Ravana was a son of a Brahmin father and a Yatudhana-Rakshasa (hybrid descendant of a Pishacha and a Rakshasa) mother.

Are you suffering from sleep disorder?
Tumblr media
"Early to bed, early to rise, makes the man healthy, wealthy and wise". This famous quote by Benjamin Franklin stands very apt, as a proper healthy nighttime sleep will lead to a successful lifestyle. For ages, sleep has astounded scientists due to its intricacies. To date even after so much research, the proper nature, need and advantages are still pondered.  Reference of sleep disorder can be found in the impeccable observation of Charles Dickens famous story in the Pickwick papers as Joe the fat boy, who was suffering from sleep apnoea. Even in Ramayana, Kumbhakarana used to sleep 6 months was described as a huge, fat, giant who used to wake up after his appetite used to goes down. The link between appetite and sleep center was probably known, as currently it is known through experiments that area of brain i.e. Lateral thalamus is involved in sleep-wake cycle correlating with food intake. Sleep deprivation tends to cause excessive weight gain leading to obesity and possibly other metabolic disorders such as Diabetes. In Indian culture, a person who sleeps more is considered to be happy and prosperous. However excessive daytime sleepiness could be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnoea. Risk factors such as male gender, post-menopausal women, small jaw bone size, and enlarged tonsil etc may contribute to upper airway collapse leading to sleep apnea. Even snoring is a symptom of sleep apnea. So all snorers are having OSA(obstructive sleep apnea)??, probably not, however, a proper medical examination is required. Apnoea as defined as a temporary cessation of breathing leads to sleep fragmentation which in turn causes a lack of nighttime sleep causing frequent awakening and excessive daytime somnolence. This fragmentation can be micro fragmentation which does not lead to a proper awakening i.e. getting out of the bed, however leads to tremendous fatigue of the brain due to improper sleep. Symptoms such as restless sleep, Waking up choking or gasping, morning headaches, dry mouth, or sore throat, Waking up often to urinate, Waking up feeling unrested or groggy, trouble thinking clearly or remembering things can happen due to OSA. Apart from reduced quality of work and compromised lifestyle, OSA can lead to Type 2 diabetes, neuropsychiatric, cardiovascular and fatty liver like complications. As per the national Indian survey, OSA is prevalent in almost 6-11% of the population which goes unnoticed due to the subtle nature of the disease. In the USA, it is estimated that an OSA patient is 4 times more likely to cause a road traffic accident. The first and foremost need is to detect and consider it as a treatable disease. Treatment of this disorder leads to a phenomenal change in the quality of work and improves lifestyle. The treatment is often weight reduction, lifestyle changes and most importantly external pressure devices which are to be worn at night time. These devices splint the airway and open it for proper breathing. Next time you see an obese person sleeping and snoring in a waiting area/meeting/online conference, please don’t jeer at the person instead help him/her to get evaluated for OSA. Together we can stop this silent, subtle and slow killer.

इस वर्ष रावण, मेघनाथ और कुंभकरण के पुतलों को गंगा में विसर्जन कर मनाया गया दशहरा
New Post has been published on http://lokkesari.com/this-time-the-puppets-of-ravana-meghnad-and-kumbhakarana-celebrated-on-the-occasion-of-the-celebrated-dussehra-in-the-ganga.html

When is Dussehra Celebrated?
Dussehra falls on the tenth day of the Ashvin month of the Hindu calendar, which typically falls in September or October of the Gregorian calendar. This year, India and the world will be observing Vijayadashami on the 19th day of October.
How is Dussehra Celebrated?
Dussehra is celebrated in varying ways in different parts of the country. In most parts, huge effigies of the demon king Ravana are burnt to symbolise the victory of good over evil. In others, people carry out large processions with idols of various deities like Durga, Saraswati, Lakshmi, Karthik and Ganesh and immerse those in rivers and other water bodies.
People also participate in Ram Leela, wherein they enact the crucial events of Ramayana. The plays continue for nine days of Navaratri and Dussehra is the final act where Lord Rama kills Ravana.
Where to Celebrate Dussehra?
We Indians are really fond of our festivals, and Dussehra is no exception to that. No matter where you go during the festive season, you are sure to be swept away by high spirits and glee. But there are some places where you can indulge in a truly unique Dussehra celebration. Wondering what places are these? Just keep reading.
1.       Delhi
As Dussehra makes its way, the bustling national capital turns into a playground of Ram Leelas. And the best place to view this enactment of Ramayana is Ramlila Maidan. On the day of Dussehra, huge effigies of Ravana and his brothers Kumbhakarana and Meghanath are erected and burned down to ashes. Besides, the same view can also be captured in almost all major playgrounds.

Idols of more than 200 regional deities are brought from nearby towns and villages to be a part of the Lord Raghunath’s Rath Yatra. The tradition was started by Raja Jagat Singh of Kullu in the 17th century. It is the only festival where different deities are assembled at one place and worshipped together.
5.       Bastar
Bastar, the heart of the tribal Chhatisgarh, is where you can be a part of a 75-day Dussehra celebration that is all about spirituality, nature, and the presiding deity of the region, Devi Danteshwari. (Image Source: Internet)
Date, Auspicious Timings And Importance Of Dussehra 2017
Coming on the heels of the vibrant, pulsating festival of Navaratri is the festival of Dussehra, which marks the victory of good over evil. This year Dussehra festival falls on September 30, 2017. Dussehra is celebrated around 20 days prior to Diwali, the festival of lights. There are many legends in Hindu folklore which recount the stories and significance of the festival. The most widespread legend is that Dussehra festival, which is also known as Vijaya Dashami, is the day on which Lord Rama killed the 10-headed demon king Ravana, who had adbucted Lord Rama's wife Sita, and it signaled the victory of good over evil.
Shubh Muhurat on Dussehra
The nine day Navratri Festival culminates in Dussehra. Durga puja is also a part of Navratri celebrations. People finally immerse the Goddesses' idols on Dussehra in West Bengal and other eastern parts of the country. It is said that any time on the Dussehra is auspicious. We don't need to see any special muhurat for buying something new (like property, vehicle, etc) on Dussehra day as the entire day is full of positivity and  good luck.
Ramlila And The Burning Of The Effigies Of Ravana
Dussehra festival is celebrated all over the country by organizing fairs, enacting the Ramlila, bursting of firecrackers and finally the burning of the effigies of Ravana, and his brother Kumbhakarana and son Meghnad. During. Ramlila is a drama enacted on stage which depicts the most momentous events of the great epic Ramayan right from the time of the birth of Lord Rama, the kidnapping of Sita by Ravana, the meeting with Hanuman and Sugreev and finally the slaying of the demon king Ravana. Even God takes human form to finish the evil. But by winning His grace man can do anything. We have the means to win  His grace for you. Are you interested in enriching your life? Do you want to make success in business? If yes, buy the Business Ask A Question Report, resolve your query about future and surge ahead in business.
Goddess Durga Slays The Fierce Mahishasura
As per another legend, Dussehra is celebrated with great fervor in the eastern parts of the country, chiefly in Kolkata, to observe the killing of the feared demon Mahishasura by Goddess Durga after a long-drawn-out battle. For four days during Dussehra celebration, people pray to an idol of Goddess Durga performing various rituals, and on the fifth day the idol is submerged in a river amidst great pomp and ceremony. It commemorates the return of the Goddess to her husband Lord Shiva's abode on Mount Kailash after slaying Mahishasura. The symbolic message here is that we too should keep our distance from evil forces and only stay in the company of good people. The power of Mother Goddess is infinite. And you can win her grace using astrological tools. You can get any problem resolved including marriage. Are you facing problems in marriage? You can get it solved using our Marriage Ask a Question Report.
The Tree That Protects The Weapons Of the Pandavas
Yet another legend about Dussehra has its roots in the other great epic of India, the Mahabharata. When the five Pandava brothers, who each had a distinctive weapon, are banished to the forest, they hide their weapons in a tree. On their return from exile, they find their weapons still safe in the tree, so they worship the tree before going back to do battle with their sworn enemies the Kauravas, which they eventually win with the help of Lord Krishna.
Auspicious Day To Buy Vehicles And Property
Dussehra usually comes in the months of September or October immediately after the nine-day festivities of Navaratri. It marks the ending of the monsoon season, and is also called Vijaya Dashami. Dusshera in Sanskrit literally means 'remover of bad fate', while for some it marks the time to break their nine-day fast of Navaratri. Dussehra is also considered a very auspicious day for buying vehicles and property.

On Dussehra, This Photographer’s Gallery Will Tell You How A Ravana Effigy Is Built From Scratch
For most of us, the greatest childhood memories related to Dussehra were burning the effigies of demon king Ravana. Watching all the fireworks go off, always gave a sense of satisfaction, perhaps the feeling that good ultimately triumphs over evil, which is the underlying spirit of the festival.
I don’t know how many of you have been involved in making small Ravana effigies in your localities, but I’m sure, most of you do not know, what goes into the making of those big effigies that are burnt in big grounds. So, this Dussehra, we thought, we’d just give you an idea of how those huge effigies are made.
On AboutReligion, photographer Ajay Rawat takes us through the steps as some workers in Delhi build a huge Ravana:
1. Cane and bamboo are used to create the skeleton of the effigy.
2. The skeleton is covered using lots of paper, cardboard and glue to make the skin.
3. Then the painting of the effigies begins. They are generally painted in bright colours to make them attractive.
4. The huge faces are then given further decorative details and facial features are added.
5. These Ravana heads are now ready to be placed on their tall effigies that are filled with gunpowder and firecrackers.
6. And then on the evening of Dussehra, the Ravana’s effigy is burnt down along with those of his brother, Kumbhakarana, and his son, Indrajit.
