MUSICAL UTENA: DEEPEST BLACK HYPE HYPE

So the first image for the new Utena musical released yesterday, and tonight me and ? HOLY SHIT LIKE TEN OTHER PEOPLE ? are going to find out the ticket receiving situation from the first round lottery for access to this epicness.  What do we know so far? So far, as confirmed before, we have Utena, Anthy, Wakaka, Juri, and Nanami all returning from the first musical to reprise their roles, with Miki and Saionji being replaced by new actors.  C-ko will be played by the lovely young woman that played as A-ko (the brunette) in the first musical, and casting has been done now for Mikage, Mamiya, Akio, and Shiori. Yohdi Kondo appears to be far and away the most popular figure in this lot, with 250k odd followers on Twitter...a sum that dwarfs literally everyone else including Ikuhara himself. So that will be interesting and almost definitely involve bringing more butts into seats, similarly to how (and I can attest to this), Ami Noujo, having been a founding member of Nogizaka46, drew a fanbase of people who were clearly there to see her more than Utena. Also, Yuka Yamauchi has already tweeted a mention of Yuu Yoshioka as someone who ‘was already like a brother to her,’ and confirmed that these two at least have worked together in the past.

Thus far we have no casted Kozue or any further characters, nor do we have new shadow characters. This production is in a theater with 950 odd seats to the original’s 242, though, with a significantly larger, more vertical stage. So I do suspect more people will be cast to fill that space out in the way they did for the original musical, with ‘flavor scenery’ about as songs were performed. Also, the choice to cast Mamiya explicitly instead of use a shadow or Anthy does indicate a more literal interpretation of the arc, more in line with the first one. Casting Akio, IMO, is a huge sign they do intend to finish the fucking show, now. Why? Because in the arc on its own, he only interacts literally with three other characters in any way, two of them remotely important. (LOL Kanae) He’d be easy to remove from a BRS musical, because the point of his presence is to set up further content later. Soo...FML, I guess.

In the meantime, please consider donating to our GoFundMe, which has been adjusted now that we’ve booked everything to more accurately reflect the main sting of this for us. We...honestly didn’t expect this was coming, since it wasn’t announced at the meet and greet last year that was held for people who bought the Blu-ray at the show. At this point, though, I’m just working on the assumption I have at least one, maybe two more of these damn things on my hands, god help me. D:

Hard to be sure with just that as a name, but doesn’t seem to have social media. There is an idol who goes by the name Nene; she’s mostly done gravure in the past, so if this is her, she’s branching out.

Touga’s actor is listed as “coming soon”. C-ko is not listed; it’s likely she won’t be in this adaptation. That’s fair; after all, she’s the only one of the original shadow girls to have been in the movie.

This cast is a little different from previous Utena musicals in that there are men; the previous musicals had women playing the male roles in the style of Takarazuka. This musical does not have any ex-Takarazuka actresses either; however, it does, like the previous Utena musicals, include actresses who had previously been in Sailor Moon musicals! Riona was in the last three, and played Rubeus, Hawk’s Eye, and Taiki/Sailor Star Maker, in that order; Yume played Ami/Sailor Mercury in the last two.

If you’re interested in seeing them in these musicals, all but the last are available with excellent English subtitles from Sea of Serenity; Miss Dream has a subbed performance of the last.

Based on this cast list, it does seem that this musical will only cover the student council arc, which is good, because that means there’ll most likely be at least two more.

Musical Utena - Deepest Black Update

Actually anyone wanna give input on what to call this?  ～深く綻ぶ黒薔薇の～ There’s a lot of back and forth on the Discord about it. XD “Rose of the Deepest Black” seems to be the average!

We were getting really worried about there being no Kozue at all, but it looks like it was just casting that hadn’t been finished! This actress apparently just recently did Sailor Moon with Ami and Yuka, so this is quite a family reunion. The Four Unknown sound like they’re ‘ensemble’ cast, essentially likely to serve the function of the two SPGs, Young Touga, and Young Saionji in the first musical. Them plus C-ko coming back is a lot more bodies to provide setting flavor and such, which is a relief because I was starting to wonder what they were going to do with all this damn stage they’ve got goin’ on. Which is good because we’re bumping from a 240-odd seat theater to one with like 950 seats. The cast is bumped from 12 to 17. 

There are going to be a lot of us swooping down on this thing, and apparently we got their attention because the Twitter account even posted in English that overseas fans were welcome, and we’re like ‘we didn’t even ask lol we are so here.’

Now they need to announce merch, JESUS PPL
