Style guide, Chinese names
How do you properly transliterate Chinese names with more than one character, e.g. 云澜 or 一龙? I got curious about what the style guides out there say, and apparently the answer is: for Mainland China, always together. So: Yunlan and Yilong is the correct way of writing those names according to standard Hanyu Pinyin. Some excerpts from style guides & other sources:
Join together (without spaces or hyphens) the syllables associated with multi-character surnames and given names. Also join together given names, Buddhist names, courtesy names, etc., in more than one syllable. Kang Youwei [-Library of Congress]
Mainland China: in two parts, eg Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Jiang Zemin. Hong Kong, Taiwan: in two parts with hyphen, eg Tung Chee-hwa, Chiang Kai-shek (exception: when a building, park or the like is named after a person it becomes three parts, eg Chiang Kai Shek Cultural Centre). Singapore, Malaysia: in three parts, eg Lee Kuan Yew. [-The Guardian/The Observer]
Personal names are written with the surname and the given name separated, and with each of the two components capitalized.
In the past it was common to separate the two syllables of a Han given name in writing by a hyphen, as: Zhōu Ēn-lái. This is not considered standard usage in Hanyu Pinyin. [-pinyin.info]
Individuals’ names in Chinese should appear in pinyin with surname first and given name represented as one unhyphenated word, i.e. Jiang Zemin. [-Brill]
#chinese#resources#naming conventions#languages#given the way the guardian subs are all over the place i got understandably confused#and my in-laws are of a generation that do it the old-fashioned way#but there is a correct way of doing this and that might be good to know!

CBC 1 Yuan tops Hong Kong Fair sale
The Hong Kong International Numismatic Fair in late June saw Heritage Auctions offer a wide range of world paper money in its Signature Auction. When the dust settled on Jun. 29, the sale had realized a most satisfactory grand total of $1,329,564, with 20 lots securing prices in excess of $10,000.
1936 Central Bank of China 1 Yuan printed by Chung Hwa Book Company. In PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ, it realized $84,000. (Image courtesy and © Heriteage Auctions, www.ha.com)
Given the wealth of rare Chinese currency notes presently on the market, it may seem somewhat unusual that the top-selling item by a long chalk was a Central Bank of China 1 yuan from 1936, an example of P-209. The price realized was almost twice that of the next high-priced lot, with the new owner having to pay $84,000 to take their trophy home.
This was not only the rare, orange-tinted variety printed by Chung Hwa Book Company but, to quote the Heritage catalog, it came to the block “pack fresh” or, in other words, PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ. It was indeed a veritable trophy note.
In second place at a mere $48,000 was the first of three Peoples Bank of China 10 yuan from 1953 (P-870). Graded PMG Choice Uncirculated 64, it had no problem fetching $48,000. In 2017, Heritage sold two other examples in identical grade for $40,800 and $47,800. In the present sale, a second example in PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45 Net took $19,200, while a specimen in PMG Extremely Fine 40 made $17,400.
Yuan Dynasty 2 Kuan, circa 1335-40, commanded $43,200. (Image courtesy and © Heriteage Auctions, www.ha.com)
One of the nicer examples to appear at auction in the last couple of years of a Yuan Dynasty 2 kuan of 1335-40 (P- UNL; S/M#C167-1) realized $43,200. It was certified PCGS Fine 15 but with “restorations and repairs, edge tears, and minor damage on the holder.”
Other high-priced lots included a Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation $100, 1.4.1948, P-176e, PMG Superb Gem Uncirculated 68 EPQ, which brought $33,600; a Deutsch-Asiatische Bank Tientsin 20 taels specimen, 1.3.1907, P-S303s, PMG Choice Uncirculated 63, $33,600; and a Banque de l’Indo-Chine 10 piastres, 15.1.1902, P-S440B, PCGS Gold Shield Grading Very Good 8 (major repair, peeled), $33,600.
Full details of lots sold and prices realized are available online at www.ha.com.

Organize 2017 Dreamin’ MoNTUE open call inMuseum of National Taipei University of Education
2017 MoNTUE Open Call— Dreamin’ MoNTUE 2017.04.08 – 2017.05.07 Ming-Hwa YEH’s The Serene Gallery
2017 Dreamin’ MoNTUE 序言Preface
Art museum: a place that houses a kaleidoscope of artistic expressions. But is that all it is? Since its inception, the Museum of National Taipei University of Education (MoNTUE) has been breaking boundaries by coalescing artistic energies from diverse backgrounds in the creation of imaginative dialogues between art and the people.
True artists are always seeking ways to break with existing conventions and play with innovative and creative mediums through experimentation and exploration. In view of encouraging artists to dream outside the box, the MoNTUE launched the Dreamin’ MoNTUE initiative in 2015, consolidating resources and professional opportunities to present a stage for artists to create art to their hearts' content.
The 2017 Dreamin' MoNTUE exhibition features Ming-Hwa YEH's The Serene Gallery and Fangas Nayaw's masingkiay. These two performing artists will each, in their one-month long exhibition period, move with the time to create a new sensory experience that marries "exhibition" and "performance", two seemingly different forms of art belonging to divergent spatial realms. The open engagement approach merges the two functions into one space. Artists, artworks, visitors are no longer bound by time in the museum. Together, they give birth to an organic exhibition.
The Serene Gallery 2017.04.08 – 2017.05.07
(Jules Henri Poincaré)
"If nature were not worth knowing, life would not be worth living." - Jules Henri Poincaré
The Serene Gallery is the third phase of its precursor Nordic, a two-phase theatrical presentation. It's about moving the theatrical stage to a museum to re-imagine and create a sensory experience unique to each viewer. Infused with the movements and scene changes from the theater, and suffused in the meandering in a museum and meditative ebb and flow of senses, viewers have the option of visiting the gallery space alone, and get in touch with the blurry grey area between the internal and external world in serenity and solitariness.
