rly tired but i feel like nomad would say “skill issue” to a k-sec officers face
In tears thinking about this… Someone please make a mod for the “Be Like Water” mission where when Faith springboards and kicks that guy on the stairs, Nomad says this… 😭😭😭

if you are going to do any stuff with relativistic velocities, i highly recommend looking into rapidity. it's a measure akin to speed but it keeps the addition rule.
so if, say, i'm in a spaceship traveling towards a planet at 0.2c and i've just shot at it with my railguns which have projectile velocities of 0.9c and i wanna know how fast they'll impact the planet, i can just convert to rapidity, add, then convert back.
so that'd be a ship rapidity of atanh(0.2)≈0.203 and a projectile rapidity of atanh(0.9)≈1.472 for a total rapidity of 1.675 and a speed of tanh(1.675)=0.932c
and lets say i wanna fuck up a bunch of the satellites in orbit around the planet instead of removing an island or two from its surface. so in place of using tungsten, osmium, or ekaroentgenium¹ slugs as ammo, i load the railguns with bags of quartz dust (cubes 25µm on a side, with a packing density of 64% that's about 41 gigagrains per liter) and place a stick of tnt in the middle of it hooked up to a timer. if i'm 15 ksec away from the planet and the tnt will spread the sand out at 100m/s, and i'm piloting an outdated craft with only 1 liter of railgun projectile volume, and i want on average 100 grains of dust to hit each satellite, which we'll say is 1 square meter of cross section. then that means the dust can be dispersed up to radius of about 11.5km, aka detonate the tnt almost two minutes before impact. so how can i use rapidity to determine what i should set the timer to?
in my frame, i am 3 light ksec away from the planet when i shoot the sand, and my projectiles are going 0.9c at the target which is going 0.2c at me, so i think they'll hit in 2,727 seconds. time is moving at 43.6% speed (=1/cosh(atanh(0.9))) on the projectile, so i should set the timer to around 1069 seconds (= 2727 * .436 - 120).
but will 100 particles of dust per satellite be enough? each dust particle is about 41.4ng at rest, and they're traveling at a rapidity of 1.675, hyperbolic cosine of rapidity is (1 + KE) in units of rest mass, so each grain has (cosh(1.675)-1) = 1.717 times its rest mass in kinetic energy, or about 6.4 MJ or 1.53 kg tnt equivalent. yeah that should be more than enough against satellites if they're like what earth has currently.
(sidenote: if instead i used the same mass of payload spread over a radius of 9000km (enough to cover all satellites in low-earth orbit that aren't in the planet's shadow), then the energy density is still 0.25mg tnt per m^2, likely enough to break sensitive electronics (since it's delivered via high energy particles) and ruin solar panels)
sorry this ended up being so long, the example got away from me at a pretty high rapidity.
¹ Eka-Roentgenium aka unhextrium or element 163, the element below Roentgenium on the periodic table. its predicted density as a metal is 47g/cc - over twice that of osmium. take a look at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_periodic_table there's some serious scifi materials inspo in there (also, i swear i remember there being a page somewhere on wikipedia that went up to element 999 and mentioned various interesting landmarks along the way but i cant find it ):
WOH
Ngl, the concept of a way to measure speed above the speed of light kind of breaks my brain, ESPECIALLY based around hyperbolic trig of all things. definitely looking into it further

One of the world details I love in Catalyst is the footprint marks on walls which are a good way to direct players and keep it logic friendly.
It's also extremely funny when you find them in places that in-universe should not be traversed so much that they leave marks like the Security Guard's home or heavily patrolled KSEC areas

There's nothing particularly special about the meal that she offers, just that she offers it. She offers it because she knows how to keep Tala's mind from wandering into places it oughtn't be, but she can only do so much discreetly. Two bowls of pasta is what she fixes knowing damn well she's already had her fill but given how she had no intention of simply watching Tala eat, she didn't think a little more would kill her. Another woman shouldn't be the reason her strict routines are now flexible suggestions yet she convinces herself it was inevitable anyway. If her health went to shit she knew who to blame, not that she ever would. It's too much of a hassle to talk herself out of every situation and she's grateful she's too caught up and stressed about what tension Tala brought with her to care about her insufferable diet at the moment anyway. Sabine tries not to make it evident that she's too tense to recall what glasses she used last time and which weren't as much of a pain to wash. A drink would have subdued her worries but an alcoholic clutch wasn't something she planned on making a habit. She doesn't bother letting Tala see how this conversation's topic ebbing on a past she's too afraid to reveal the details of makes her paranoid about what might become a catalyst for this … safety that they've created to come crashing down within moments.
All the same she listens and she tries to take the good that Tala offers with the bad that still rots her very core. The more she listens the more she questions just how much Tala knew. Sabine's been so busy keeping her from the truth she hadn't ever actually inquired about how much Tala already knew. KSEC wasn't anything Sabine had much information on other than what Liam's shared but it wasn't as if Tala was unfamiliar with Kingdom having worked for them herself. If rumors spread through the KSEC division it may not be too off base to assume she knew more than she was letting on but her paranoid thoughts could be getting the better of her. Shine brightly? The words don't even feel like they're meant for her. Just how does Tala see her? Who does Tala think she is? Sabine's used to receiving compliments in very specific environments. For her achievements, for her genius, for her innovation, for her input, at times looks, but Tala isn't talking about any of that. She doesn't think poorly of herself, quite the opposite but she's not delusional enough to think she's somehow as lighthearted as Tala. Call it realism of you must, Sabine was fine with being realistic, that's just how she operated. That line of thinking didn't appeal to most, often viewed as too restricting, too harsh, that was fine, but to say she … shined? Her rose-colored glasses were affecting her judgement.
Tumblr media
"Listen," she doesn't want to scare her anymore than she already has, so try as she might she gives her best attempt at an edgeless tone with her back to her. "I don't know what you know or what you think you know about me, but not all of it is … pretty. There's a lot of me I haven't shared for good reason." She doesn't want to ruin this. Them. "Secrets I haven't told anyone who I didn't think needed to know to keep the peace. There's nothing about me that's as magical as what you're describing, you might be getting ahead of yourself painting a picture of me that's unrealistic," albeit sweet. "I can't take back the things I've done in the past but I can stop you from deluding yourself any further. I'm nothing that sweet." The fantasy Tala spoke of felt far too fictional to be anything related to her. "… The lies I've fed people for results that may have cost them their lives—I can't." Monster is what they called her. There is some truth to what Tala breathes and it's that Sabine intentions were, at her core, always good. She wanted to help people.
Now their blood is on her hands.
"It's just too ugly."
Tumblr media
Sabine wasn't trying to upset her but she knows that look can't mean much else. Her sharp tongue might have cut Tala without having meant to, but she can't find it within herself to take it back. Tala means well, she always has. It's that optimism and kindness that Sabine swears is trouble and she knew damn well that trouble always found her. Trouble always managed to seek her out even when she actively avoided it and trouble had a habit of punishing those closest to her in order to get under her skin. She doesn't want her awful luck to fall on Tala. As silly as it may sound she's afraid of the 'what if's and consequences of letting this get too deep too soon. Ruining the parts of Tala that were still so beautiful for anyone to appreciate with whatever grim truths Sabine had inadvertently acquired over time. It clung to her like a second skin and blocked her not from ailments but peace she otherwise would have found naturally. Tala was too good for her. But she wasn't cruel enough to seek pleasure in making the girl upset. There are hints of guilt that glimmer in the actions she sets into action the moment Tala recoils with her answer, urging the chemist to act. "Then we'll have leftovers," she ignores her sad almost pitiful answer about not being hungry and insists without much word on it. "I still have some from yesterday. Somehow I always end up making too much and I'm not careless enough to waste any food." She isn't wasteful enough to make more than she needs either. The excess food is always for Tala, whether she decides to join her or not. Their meetings, however brief, are always the difference between a decent day and a great one. It only takes a few words, sometimes actions, just to feel the stresses of the day fall off her like water down her back. To think one person could carry that power was intimidating — and unrealistic. To think she would give someone that power was almost unspeakable but she wasn't a woman without desires. A woman who had convinced herself she could do without them ages ago only to fall right into them whenever brown eyes and sweet lips presented themselves whenever they pleased. Anxious, smiling, irritated, Tala always ignored the worst of her while somehow trying to find the best. As much as Sabine wanted to call Tala naïve for seeking the best parts of her, Sabine was surprised someone was so hellbent that there was anything appealing left to seek. Sunshine be damned, Tala warmed her in places she thought impossible to reach. "You like pasta, don't you?" She makes her way to the fridge, peering into it for just a moment to fetch what she needed. "…" Green eyes glance at the defeated looking Tala and fingers tap the edges of the fridge in thought, trying to find the answer that would fix that expression. "What made you say that?"
leftovers? it was strange, she often found that the other had meals left behind. or perhaps, not left behind or made in advance? she could never really tell if she was accidentally stealing meals that had been prepped for her personally- but she couldn't deny the opportunity to spend just a little more time with the chemist if she could help it.
she blinks back her thoughts a little further, letting herself smile a little. "i do. most types are yummy.." at least of the ones she'd tried, anyways. they hadn't been the most common types of dishes back home, so.
if she doesn't think about it, can she forget? but how can she, when it eats away at her straight from her chest? even with days and time spent with her, she still didn't know her. she couldn't begin to fathom anything about her, she couldn't begin to understand. she couldn't; she wasn't allowed to.
but that was all her heart ached for. she wanted to be the person to know sabine best. to be someone so comfortable that even she'd feel able to finally let her guard down. and it gnaws at her from the inside out that she isn't there yet. that maybe, she never would be.
".. i guess. i was just thinking about our time together. and.. i mean. even good people can do bad things once in a while. i don't think.. you're a bad person. i think.. the sides i've seen of you.. you can be harsh, but you care so much about people.. you care more about others than you want them to know. you.. you just shine so brightly when you're not thinking about it. and i know some people have siad you're a bit harsh or mean but.. i just can't.. really think of you that way. you're more than whatever front you put up to keep others safe."
had she said too much? would she get upset again? she takes a peek at her before meekly dropping her head again.
"sorry. i know it was super out of the blue."

Cork Board Corner! (though some of these are more strictly “flyer pile” or “taped to wall” posters) This one is food and sustainability themed.
1. Farm-to-Fork: free food every Wednesday?! This takes place either before or after our class, depending on which section you’re in.
2. UK Greenthumb, what I assume is a sustainability club or organization on campus. Weekly meetings sound like anyone can drop in!
3. Food @ Lunch. A flyer for a past sequence of conferences. I like these flyers on old talks because they help me find scholars who are talking about a topic and what topics they’re talking about!
4. Danish Cuisine and the Digital study abroad option through the WRD department! A food-based study abroad adventure doesn’t sound half bad.
5. The Victory for Hemp flyers I passed around! I also included (6) a pin I was given by the Kentucky Student Environmental Coalition (KSEC). So many organizations around campus, Lexington, and Kentucky!
