I'm back and with a BIIIIIIG question

What would happen if someone tried to free the KR members? Would they become a member too? Nothing? Would they be murdered? Would they experimented on?

Glad you're back and that's good question actually!

If someone attempts to free the KR members there's a big possibility that the person will be...

( A) get murdered and tortured as well as being experimented on as an object (OH YIKES)

(B) be forced to be part of them and be locked forever.

Or....

(C) get rid of the monitors and set them free quick.

The reason I'm mentioning the monitors is that members like Soph (Other Sophie) have an ankle monitor on their ankle.

If any members have those means they are forced to be supervised or watched. Sadly they CAN NOT get rid of it. It's painful and hard. Some members have monitors inside of their skin (shoulder or neck.) Some may have it on their ankle or any place underneath the clothing.

But there are also a few silly things that I might as well answer in case you have those.

Is it easy to free them?

Not really. The place is very unsatisfying and difficult even tho it might give you a backroom vibe but we don't know if the person can handle amounts of gory scenes in there. Especially because the room might smell...."funny"

what happens if the person gets CAUGHT?

Simple. Murdered in a fucked up way or forced to be a member. But being experimented and tortured is worse than being killed. Soo-

Before the event, he had his messy and bad haircut (blonde hair), a fully striped light green and dark green shirt, blue shorts, and a pair of black converse sneakers.

After the event his clothes were ripped and covered in blood stains, his hair was more messy, his right hand were covered in danger while the left arm has covered in bandage to his upper arm (?), bruises, scratches, scars on both knees and arms. A purple bandaid at the right side his forehead and sneakers covered in blood.

During his first day of being forced to join the organization, his haircut was different and short. He began wearing the same outfit as Melvin and the 2 quiet assistant (Dan & Soph) and has the tag with the number four in it.

His behavior has constantly changed due to trauma. He is always anxious snd stressed about the situation. Despite being aware of his physical and mental health, he gets too overwhelmed and worried too much. Sometimes he may be brave or cocky enough to argue with the leader.

So with Kingdom Hearts 3 getting a release date soon, I’m reminded of all the AUs where people have substituted anime, video games, or cartoons in place of the Disney films.

Naturally there’s GOT to be a Dreamworks Animation AU version of KH somewhere out there. But seeing as how Organization 13 tends to have a fascination with certain characters based on their personalities and struggles, and the state of their hearts, can you imagine some of the reactions they’d have to certain DWA characters? Like:

Jack Frost: ‘This young man has been dead before, but resurrected by divine means and thus his heart came back to life. The centuries of isolation have taken some toll on him and should have darkened his heart with despair and bitterness. Yet despite all that, he holds no ill will towards the children he keeps an eye out for. Could this have to do with the reason why he–and thus his heart–came back to life? In any case, we must be alert–the power of belief in this world effects the light in children’s hearts and he is among those determined to protect such light.’

Toothless: ‘Such a creature should show intense hatred against humanity, and yet he showed compassion towards one human and opened his heart to him as much as the boy did. The relationship is not exactly ‘owner and pet’ yet something more. How could such a heart belonging so such a beast be untamed and yet not quite at the same time? What exactly connects the two hearts together? To create such a unique light in each other?’

Megamind: ‘This an unusual case. This being claims to be evil, and yet there is some unusual balance within his heart. A sort of ‘shade of gray’ so to say. Destructive, yes, but akin to a child seeking attention or wanting to prove themselves of something. He would certainly confuse the Heartless.’

Po: ‘Perhaps one of the purest individuals we’ve come across. Not as pure as the seven Princesses of Heart, but the sheer amount of determination in this creature’s heart makes him almost unstoppable. Such inspiration has even reached the hearts of those around him in his world, including the more cynical of their lot–it is quite impressive. Such qualities make him impossible to succumb to darkness.’

Krupp/Captain Underpants: ‘We have no idea what to make of this individual. On one hand, the sheer amount of cruelty, bitterness, and loneliness has darkened his heart to the point that a terrifying Heartless could result from him, and especially if the amount of misery plaguing the school were to be added to it. Yet in certain moments, his heart will suddenly be cleansed of all the darkness and shine with an abundant amount of optimistic courage as well as compassion. We aren’t sure how this is accomplished, unless there was a small amount of light hidden within the darkness of that heart, which became amplified, but we have no clue how this was accomplished in the first place. Yet, we have detected an unusual, yet powerful light within the school that is keeping the darkness at bay–someone or something is keeping the hearts of the students from succumbing to darkness. Could this same light be the reason behind the constant shift from darkness to light in this individual?’

Quick Review: “The Brutal Friendship: Mussolini, Hitler, and the Fall of Italian Fascism” by William Deakin

In Brief: A fascinating, and thorough, look at an often-ignored part of the Second World War. The overall work is well-crafted, and the trove of documents used is impressive.

Finding this book was a bit of a fun aside, really. If any of you are like me, you enjoy the times when libraries or other organizations put their books on sale. My local library offered to let one fill a bag for two dollars. Usually, I only find a few, but this time it appeared nobody else had come looking for history books before I got there. I can assure you all, fair readers, that anybody coming after me found much slimmer pickings.

(As an aside to this aside, they also had a significant amount of the illustrated Shakespeare editions. For any English teachers reading this, they work quite well in some classrooms. Libraries are getting rid of quite a few these days, I find – it might be worth asking what classroom resources your local library might be willing to share with you!)

Among the treasures was a hardcover edition of “The Brutal Friendship”, by William Deakin. Deakin was an English author (1913-2005) who served in the Second World War in between stints as Winston Churchill’s literary assistant. Martin Gilbert, possibly the single most accomplished Churchill scholar, described Deakin as being crucial to Churchill’s efforts in terms of literature. Deakin was involved in special operations, parachuting into Yugoslavia and enduring German assaults with the Partisans. Deakin was even wounded in one assault, alongside Josip Broz, better known as ‘Tito’ – the future ruler of Yugoslavia.

“The Brutal Friendship” was, despite the man’s many accomplishments, a feat of some note at the time it was published in 1960. The book details, in brief, the rise of Italian fascism and the early war effort, but then goes into superb depth on the decline and fall of Italian fascism, working in excellent detail and with an almost astounding use of documentary evidence. The work is not just a superb historical analysis, but a great political text as well.

Perhaps the greatest strength of “The Brutal Friendship” is its use of extensive documentation to provide its evidence. Seemingly even the simplest claim is backed up by a quotation from a letter, a set of party meeting minutes, or a private letter. Personally, I find Deakin’s level of documentary evidence exceptional even for his time. Some of the most thorough history books I’ve ever read are from this period, and even amongst them “The Brutal Friendship” stands out. I would easily put it in a league with Manchester’s “Arms of Krupp” in that regard.

This strength, then, does not particularly surprise – but what does surprise is the depth of Deakin’s insight into his subject. He explores the folly and foolishness inherent to fascism very well, and some of his simplest proofs are the ones that are the most baffling to consider. Namely, that before Italy was reaching a crisis point and facing invasion of her home territories, there was still no formal war plan agreed upon between Germany and Italy. Even though they were military and ideological allies, neither side planned for the other and in fact had radically different priorities for the conduct of the war. Deakin reveals with great depth and skill just how limited the ‘alliance’ between the fascist powers really was, with a lack of respect and a good deal of mutual suspicion thrown on top of it all.

The deep limitations of Mussolini and Hitler are laid out in startling detail, often in their own words. This book is a superb one, then, for anybody looking for insights into the thinking of either man – or their paladins who constantly surrounded them, jockeying for position. In Mussolini’s case, these same paladins sought advancement and also plotted betrayal at the same time, and so Deakin shows that within the already chaotic mess that was fascist government, Italy stands out.

If there are any drawbacks, a modern reader of history or someone who tends to prefer online history videos may find the language a bit dense and indeed dry. This is not the easiest read, obviously, as Deakin privileges thoroughness above all else. The most recent publication I think is out there is a paperback from the year 2000, and with a book this dense I wouldn’t really recommend a paperback in any event. The other 1960s editions are readily available on websites like Abebooks.com for a very affordable price, if you don’t mind a used book.

In conclusion, this may not be the best read for everyone today – but I very much doubt that a general reader will find a better book on this specific subject. There may be digital editions floating out there, but this is the sort of book that I will always prefer to hold in my hands, and the temptation to fill it with margin notes is very, very high as I have seldom learned quite so much in so short a time. Not bad for a lucky find!

Fair Warning -- Musing 277

A heartfelt word   to friend and foe Beware of crowds   and where they go

Why is it, I wonder, that crowds are so much more easily swayed than individuals? Why are mobs so easily steered and prodded?

I believe it has all to do with reason versus emotion. You’re not going to whip a solitary person up into a frenzy—if you try, he or she will regard you not only with suspicion but with compassion. To convince a single person you must resort to, and appeal to his or her, reason—perhaps, also, to some degree his or her intuition.

If you make sense, well, he or she might just be swayed your way. If not, then not so much.

Emotion, on the other hand, well—and to make my point, let me quote a short article that appeared in Deutsche Welle in November 2012:

At a Nazi Party rally in 1935, Hitler described his ideal of the Hitler Youth as “swift as a greyhound, as tough as leather, and as hard as Krupp’s steel.” The phrase was subsequently quoted often and used as a slogan.

On September 14, 1935, a small, unattractive man with a toothbrush mustache, in a stiff white shirt, brown tie and uniform, addressed some 50,000 members of the Hitler Youth Movement in the gigantic stadium of the Nazi party rally grounds in Nuremberg. His fists clenched, the Führer spoke to a captive audience, which stood to attention in orderly rows and frequently interrupted his words with impassioned shouts of “Sieg Heil!”

The longer he spoke, the more he whipped the crowd into a frenzy of enthusiasm with talk of the rampant degeneracy of the Weimar Republic and the need for a new German who was “more disciplined, fit and trim.” He told the sea of upturned faces that “a young German must be as swift as a greyhound, as tough as leather, and as hard as Krupp’s steel.”

It’s hard to tell from film footage of this speech whether all the young people present were genuinely moved by Hitler’s words, whether they actually understood his message or were simply carried away by the electrifying atmosphere. The only surviving footage is stylized in the same way as Leni Riefenstahl’s notorious propaganda film “Triumph of the Will,” made one year previously at the Nazi Party Congress in Nuremberg.

Close-ups of young, shining-eyed Aryans and shots of vast arenas filled with rows of blonde, uniformed young people overseen by the Führer himself combine to create the impression that an almost religious event is taking place. This was exactly the effect Hitler’s fiery speeches and the spectacular mass rallies so beloved of the Nazis were supposed to achieve.

 The Power of Imagery

Othmar Plöckinger from the Institute of Contemporary History in Munich has researched Hitler’s speeches in-depth. “Hitler was undoubtedly a successful orator, especially in the early years,” says Plöckinger. “Around 1933, his speeches became more weighed down with show.”

In the run-up to his rise to power, the right-wing press responded primarily to the Nazis’ knack for imagery and the pomp and ceremony of Hitler’s public speeches, rather than the actual content.

Leftwing writer Franz Jung gave a glimpse of the extraordinary organizational effort that went into the Nazis’ mass events in his eye-witness account of a May 1 parade in Berlin shortly after the Nazis seized power in 1933: “For the first time in history, a gathering of one-and-a-half-million people is to take place on the Tempelhofer Feld, the press has reported. The Propaganda Ministry published a review of operations which states that 18,000 people organized into six columns will gather within one hour [...] The top of the first column will reach Tempelhofer Feld at 2:00 p.m., and the rally will begin at 8:00 p.m.”

The media was brought into line to ensure that the desired effect of Hitler’s speeches was underscored by press coverage. A day after he gave a speech, almost all the major dailies would reprint it word for word; it would be reported on the radio; film footage of the event would be shown weeks later on newsreels screened in cinemas.

It was the Nazis’ skilled media manipulation that allowed Hitler’s appeal to German youth to be “as swift as a greyhound, as tough as leather, and as hard as Krupp’s steel” to become a popular quote that went down in German history. Over the years, the fact that it was first spoken by Hitler was eventually forgotten.

 Militaristic Message

Swift as greyhounds, tough as leather? Hitler’s speech seems bizarre now, not least on account of his failure to mention any traditional values that young people might aspire to, such as education, wisdom and justice. As it happened, Hitler had come up with the sentence long before the Hitler Youth rally in 1935—he has used it 10 years earlier in his book “Mein Kampf.”

Even then, Hitler was more interested in what Othmar Plöckinger calls “military” discipline rather than educational ambition.

“There is no explicit mention of education and young people in “Mein Kampf,” although Hitler’s fondness for military thought and action is already in evidence,” he says. “In this respect, militarism obviously served as one of the main cornerstones of the Nazi society.”

By 1935, Hitler’s power was consolidated, the NSDAP had 3.9 million members and the opposition had largely been eliminated. The Nazis were in a position to plan German expansion and rearmament. Hitler introduced conscription, breaking the terms of the Versailles Treaty, which had placed restrictions on Germany’s armed forces.

Hitler’s speech to young Germans in 1935 was a taste of things to come. In 1936, a law was passed that made the Hitler Youth the only youth organization in Germany, made up of the Hitlerjugend proper, for male youths ages 14-18; the younger boys’ section Deutsches Jungvolk for ages 10-14; and the girls’ section Bund Deutscher Mädel (BDM, the League of German Girls).

In 1939, membership became compulsory. Nearly 8 million youngsters took part in drills on the schoolyard, shooting exercises and mustering, all with the goal of becoming as swift as a greyhound, as tough as leather, and as hard as Krupp’s steel. The Hitler Youth was disbanded by Allied authorities in 1945.

Yes, Hitler was a gifted rabble-rouser (to put it mildly) and, by his own intents and purposes, one must admit that he was successful. Of course, the end game didn’t quite go as planned—just to make sure his suicide would turn out well (as in certain death), he not only took a cyanide capsule, but he also shot himself with a pistol. So much for swift as a greyhound, as tough as leather, and as hard as Krupp’s steel. Just a pile of 56 years old, flabby German coward.

Now, a recent President seems to have ripped a few pages out of this German coward’s playbook which we saw evidence of during his strange political “Lock Her Up” rallies. Not too much reason involved here, but a lot of mob-mentality emotion. Very un-American, that—we who pride ourselves on our rugged individualism.

And I’m sure that many (though by no means all) of the twenty or so thousand attendees at these Mini-Nurembergs were just that, rugged individuals, proud selves as it were.

But, it seems to be quite well known that one does get carried away, as they say. We see it in sports: hockey games and soccer games come to mind. I’ve been there myself, carried along by the jubilant group emotion at a hard-fought-for score, or the bordering-on-hatred rising like miasma at the clearly unfair and potentially injurious tackle.

But why? Why do we get carried away?

I ran across this Quora thought, which I found insightful: “I think there are only two ways a person can be carried away by a crowd. Sadly, both of those ways are entirely possible and have indeed happened.

“In the 18th Century, people who had made themselves completely unwelcome in a community were, literally, carried away by a crowd: out of town, on a rail, usually tarred and feathered.

“And, less literally, here in the 21st Century, any type of vigilante behaviors, and they do exist, would be a physical being carried away by an unruly crowd.

“There is also the emotional being carried away by a crowd. We need look no farther than the emotional sway Herr Hitler had on good and decent German people.

“For some enigmatic and unfathomable reason, when a moral, and upright person, who wouldn’t hurt a fly is caught up in mob mentality, they frequently act like they would never do on their own; along with the rest of the crowd.

“I think their logic runs along the lines of: I am only 1% to blame for my actions. My culpability is shared with the other 99 participants. Naturally, the other 99 people, individually, feel the same way.”

Well put, I think. And I believe the “sharing of the blame” is a strong factor in allowing yourself to let it all down and become 100% mob as it were.

But how, though?

Turning to Wikipedia, the often spot-on clarifying voice: “Herd mentality, mob mentality or pack mentality describes how people can be influenced by their peers to adopt certain behaviors on a largely emotional, rather than rational, basis. When individuals are affected by mob mentality, they may make different decisions than they would have individually.”

Yes, I’d say. Putting it mildly.

I think a long, hard look at the upturned, bordering on ecstatic faces admiring (and drinking in) their Messiah during one of these “Lock Her Up” rallies tells the story quite eloquently.

The January 6 mob attack underlines it.

Although the Bruce Lee-inspired Cinemax series Warrior is fiction, it is loosely based on historical events of San Francisco in the 1870s. Just as Nellie Davenport (Miranda Raison) is based upon on a remarkable San Franciscan heroine, Donaldina Cameron, the Season 2 Finale drops a bomb for one of the show’s central characters. At the end of the episode when Dylan Leary (Dean Jagger) declares “I’m Dylan Leary and I’m here on behalf of the Workingmen’s Party of California,” it’s a major tell. The Workingmen’s Party of California was an actual organization during the period when Warrior is set. This means that Leary is based upon Denis Kearney, the real-life labor union activist and anti-Chinese agitator who founded the Workingmen’s Party.

Warrior’s head writer Jonathan Tropper admits that Leary is based loosely upon Kearney. However, he has always been clear about the show’s use of historical references.

“The design of the show is done in such a way that we are nearly almost telling a fable,” says Tropper. “Even the way we design our set is meant to look like almost the graphic novel version of this world. We’re not setting out from day one to do any kind of docudrama. What we’re doing is we’re using the truth of that period. And some of the events of that period, we’re still doing through the prism of a sort of graphic novel martial arts fable.”

Like any good writer, Tropper embeds Easter Eggs throughout his work. For instance, Leary’s Irish bar, the Banshee, is a clear nod to another TV show Tropper wrote for Cinemax titled Banshee.

However, Denis Kearney wasn’t a barkeep like Leary. He was an extremely controversial racist demagogue, so well-known for his xenophobia that the term “Kearneyism” is a thing.

Born in County Cork, Ireland in 1847, he left home at age 11 after his father died. He became a cabin boy on the clipper ship Shooting Star and for the next decade, he travelled the high seas. By 1868, he first landed in San Francisco as a ship’s first mate. There, he continued to work as a seaman, rising to an officer’s rank on board a coastal steamer. However, his seafaring days ended after he was accused of deserting the ship in danger, forcing him to leave that career behind. In 1870, he married an Irish woman, Mary Ann Leary (note the maiden name) and they had their first child, Maggie, a year later.

They settled in San Francisco in 1872 where Kearney started a successful hauling business. Kearney had two more children, William in 1873 and Amelia in 1975. By 1877, his company owned five wagons (a respectable number in those days) and transported goods across San Francisco. In Warrior, Leary’s family is dead. He first meets Sophie (Celine Buckens) when he is visiting their graves.   

The success of Kearney’s hauling business led him to confront a growing city-supported hauling monopoly, which thrust him into the political arena. He was self-educated, literate, and furthered his knowledge by weekly participation in the Lyceum of Self-Culture. He was an engaging speaker for those that shared his sentiments and quickly grew in popularity amongst the disgruntled and unemployed. To fortify his political leanings, Kearney applied to a rising American socialist group, the Workingmen’s Party of the United States. But his application was denied because he was viewed as too extreme, so he went his own way.

In 1877, he founded the Workingman’s Party of California taking the position of President with J.G. Day as Vice President and H.L. Knight as Secretary. The Workingmen’s Party of California was the instigator behind the San Francisco’s Riot of 1877, which was depicted in the penultimate Season 2 episode of Warrior “Enter the Dragon.” Kearney was one of the most outspoken anti-Chinese ralliers so the season finale reveal that Kearney is the inspiration for Leary is a significant tease for those that know this history. It charts a nefarious path for Leary should Warrior season 3 become a reality.  

As a public speaker, Kearney was a provocateur who often endorsed violence. And yet, his overall ideology, while incendiary, was inconsistent. He protested unemployment, banking corruption, unfair taxation, and the growing monopolies, and gained the most ground attacking capitalists who employed cheaper Chinese labor. Kearney propounded the rallying cry “The Chinese must go!” and was quoted as saying “A little judicious hanging right here and now will be the best course to pursue with the capitalists and the stock sharps who are all the time robbing us.” He warned “Remember Judge Lynch.” He was arrested repeatedly for inciting violence, but was repeatedly acquitted. 

Ironically, his opposers often pointed out that Kearney was himself an immigrant, so his xenophobia was fundamentally hypocritical. Nevertheless, he amassed a significant following, predominantly amongst angst-ridden unemployed Irish. His followers were called Kearneyites, and they became a formidable, yet short-lived political force that once sent 51 delegates to the California constitutional convention. In 1878, the Workingmen’s Party of California won 11 seats in the State Senate at 17 seats in the State Assembly. They were influential in the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, or at the very least, Kearney took credit for that Act later. But by then, Kearney’s notoriety had faded. 

Kearney’s political power ebbed by the turn of the decade. In 1878, he travelled to the Eastern U.S. in hopes of gaining more support. Although he was received by some huge crowds, there was also growing criticism of his communist leanings and intolerance. Kearney campaigned for Benjamin Butler, the Presidential candidate for the Greenback Party, in hopes of getting invited to be his running mate (he never was, and Butler lost anyway).

Like Warrior’s Walter Buckley (Langley Kirkwood), Butler was also a Civil War veteran, although unlike Buckley, Butler was a Major General with the Union Army. Buckley fought for the confederacy. The Greenback Party’s platform was anti-monopoly. Monopolies were a major issue at the turn of the century, alongside Chinese immigration, so much so that there was another major political party called the Anti-Monopoly Party in 1884. The Greenback Party existed from 1874 to 1889 before fading away. 

Kearney found an opponent in another San Franciscan named Wong Chin Foo, a Chinese Civil Rights activist who is characterized as the ‘Chinese Martin Luther King’ for his activism and sacrifice. Wong was a journalist and champion for the rights of Chinese Americans. Among other things, Wong is credited as the first reporter to publish the term ‘chop suey’ in a newspaper article for the Brooklyn Eagle in 1884. Wong heckled Kearney in the press. At one point, he challenged Kearney to a duel, offering Kearney choice of weapons: chopsticks, Irish potatoes, or Krupp guns (an artillery cannon of the time). If Warrior somehow manages to get picked up by another network for a third season, Wong might inspire another fascinating character.

By 1880, Kearney reduced his public speaking considerably. His speeches had lost their momentum and by 1883, he returned to the private sector, continuing to run his hauling business, and added an employment agency. He invested in various commodities, real estate, and stocks, and became quite wealthy. He died a rich man in Alameda, just across the bay from San Francisco, in 1907.

Warrior was televised during a period of increased racism in the United States. There was even a focus upon anti-Chinese sentiments in the wake of the coronavirus. For the first season, some of the parallels were uncanny, even disturbingly prophetic considering that it was filmed a year prior. By recalling someone as divisive as Kearney, Warrior elevates itself into something beyond an action drama. It offers some insight into a dark period of American history and reminds us that we aren’t that far from it today, even though well over a century has passed. 

Bruce Lee was a pioneering advocate for racial equality. Beyond the Kung Fu action, it’s these timely historic references where Warrior honors Bruce Lee the best. With Cinemax ending production of all its original programming, like Lee, Warrior feels like it’s gone too soon. It has so much more to offer and it was clearly poised to do just that. Hopefully, some other network will pick up this extraordinary series because it has so many more relevant stories to tell.

After long periods of recovery, the unified Martian Federation have now focused on building up strength in its armed forces. Their numbers have now grown to numerous full-fledged formations, ready to fight at any given time. Along with the remaining Mars-stationed soldiers of the UNGAC, under the Carus-Carter Defense Treaty, they will prepare for any event if the need arose.

Their human allies on the political side, however, are not so optimistic. After three years of heavy fighting, and the ongoing peace. The United Nations Diplomatic Council on the Solar System wonders if its troops are still needed on Mars. Most believe that those that remain, still fight off sporadic conflicts against the Federation’s enemies. Others believe that with the war’s end, the Martians wouldn’t need to worry about another war now that the last fighting remnants of the Zodian Martian extremist, Karov, have been reduced, and may plan a full demobilization of UNGAC military presence within time.

Meanwhile, rumours have begun to spread, that the last remaining followers of the Confederacy have begun to attract more to their lost cause to take back the planet once more…

Arcadia. For a while, you might as well be in any Arabian desert, and no one would argue with you. Aside from the crater by the road, the gullies that might flow with liquid water, the Alba Patera volcano, Tempe Terra, and the numerous variety of Martians who reside here. Like the desert, it’s beautiful.

We see a platoon of MX-14 medium tanks pressing on in all their glory. Armour leaving the base, always a sight to behold. They pass by a Martian guard. The commander of the lead tank, who we see sitting up in the commander’s hatch, salutes his alien comrade as they move on to their objective.But that’s not all we see.

EXTERIOR: F.O.B. JACE MALCOM – DAWN

We come upon one of the first signs of human presence here in Arcadia. The Jace Malcom. An infantry garrison. Walls like something out of the medieval ages, with a tad bit of a modern sci-fi touch. Barbed wires. Martian dirt sandbags. Mounted machine guns. Anti-Air and Anti-Tank defense systems. Lights. 

The works.

Guards up on the walls, keeping watch beyond the wire. Engineers continue ongoing construction around the F.O.B. Mechanics keeping the vehicles maintained. Tanks and light armoured vehicles. Helicopters and jets. Coming and going, parking and staying. A military base, indeed.

It is quiet.

The sanctuary also harbors scores of young giant manta rays—the first nursery habitat proposed in the world, according to research published earlier this month.

The largest mantas glide through the water with a 23-foot wingspan, longer than a pickup truck. “They’re like gigantic flying saucers,” says marine biologist Joshua Stewart, lead author of the paper. “You’re absolutely dwarfed by these creatures.” But at Flower Garden Banks, the mantas are much smaller, a mere seven feet across on average.

Stewart, a PhD candidate at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, first ventured to Flower Garden Banks in 2016, aboard a research vessel named the Manta. He was hoping to gather tissue samples from resident giant oceanic manta rays, to learn whether the group in the sanctuary was related to other populations in the Gulf. But when he spotted the fish on his first dive, he couldn’t get over its size.

“He was so excited. He was giddy talking about how small that manta was,” says Michelle Johnston, a NOAA marine biologist and Stewart’s diving partner for the trip.

“It wasn’t something that struck us as strange,” Johnston explains. She and her colleagues do most of their fieldwork in the sanctuary and didn’t think twice about the mantas’ dimensions. But Stewart, a ray expert, knew the group flapping through this patch of ocean was unique.

Stewart had seen a few young manta rays before, he says, “but it’s super rare.” In the sanctuary, the equation is reversed: mantas of many sizes, but hardly any adults. “It goes all the way from newborn pups up to right before they become mature,” Stewart says. “Some of these guys are staying there for multiple years.”

He sorted through 25 years’ worth of dive logbooks and photographs to figure out if mantas have always been hanging around Flower Garden Banks, staying until they’re big enough to journey from the reef’s protection.

Mantas have unique markings on their bellies, like a fingerprint, so Stewart could identify individuals across the records. The males’ reproductive organs, called claspers, are also visible from photographs, so he could tell whether the pictured mantas were sexually mature.

Identifying where the kiddos hang out is important because so little is known about their basic biology. “They are a group of species that have tons of knowledge gaps, despite being this popular creature that divers love to see,” Stewart says. Like many open ocean species of sharks and rays, no one has ever seen mantas give birth in the wild and next to nothing is known about their early life.

Finding important habitats for mantas also makes it easier to protect them. This year, the government listed the giant manta ray as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. The move comes after recent population declines, likely due to pressure from fisheries and warming waters, which may affect the abundance of the tiny plankton mantas love to eat.

It may be a long journey out to see them, but mantas are a pretty magical fish to protect.

“It’s amazing to have a gigantic creature coming over and doing these passes over your head, just wanting to find out more about you,” says Stewart. “They are one of the coolest animals that I’ve ever spent time with in the water.”
