Something I am fascinated by in Hinduism is the way desire plays into worship. We imagine gods as lovers - whether faithful or cheating. We describe their beauty, we describe their hips, their lips, their eyes - and you can see this across numerous songs and styles of music and dance: regardless of the gender of the poet and the gender of the god.

Sure. Maybe Thyagaraja going on endlessly about Lord Rama’s features isn’t even slightly gay (tbc - this is a joke, I do not know enough to make a judgement like that). But it is a trend through Indian music and dance as a whole. Krishna is the boyfriend dancing the raas, or trying desperately to win back your favour. Murugan is the one you send your friend to bring - and even admonish for cheating.

It is definitely not always romantic. Portraying Krishna as a child, and showing him love as a mother is very, very common. Poets across history repeatedly admonish gods almost as you would a friend, asking why they have not yet come to their aid. Of course there is respect here, a consciousness of the divine, but it is morphed by every dancer and poet and musician and devotee into the sort of relationship that best suits their worship.

There is a Eurocentric and quasi-racist perception that idol worship is somehow less than. That we have to eventually move on to a monotheistic god with whom we have a solely paternal relationship - viewing him (and it is somehow always “Him”) as something to be desired, or a mischievous child to be coddled, or a friend who has not done what they have promised is dangerous and wrong and perhaps even disgusting. And like - 1) screw you man and 2) there is no reason why the default is servitude, and there is nothing wrong with tailoring their worship.

This view would not bother me so much if some Hindu people did not also do this sort of moral policing. Saying that “sringara-bhakti” (worship through love) cannot be a bhava, that is less than “pure bhakti” (pure worship), santising mentions of desire in kritis and varnmans when teaching them and passing them on - that isn’t us evolving to be better, that is us narrowing our view of our possibilities and regressing.

TLDR; Hinduism takes the supreme force behind the entire universe and says “how sexy” or “what a gud bud they would make” and I just think that’s pretty neat.

Who was Rishi Atri?

Indian history is blessed with a large number of renowned saints and sages who collected all Vedic wisdom, practices, mantras, and concepts. Rishi Atri or Attri is one of the most well-known and reputable Vedic Sages. He is regarded as being a Brahmarishi, a Brahmajnani.

Atri Gotra is the name of Rishi Atri and Devi Anusuya’s familial lineage. Numerous gods, rulers, rishis, brahmins, Prajapati, and Vaishya are represented in Atri rishi’s family tree. The Lunar dynasty, also known as Chandravansh, was founded by Chandra or Soma and was ruled by kings such as Purava, Aayu, Nahusha, Yathi, Yayati, Samyati, Aayati, Viyati, and Kriti.

The warrior clans of the Atri Gotra also include Turvasu of the Yavanas, Drhyu of the Bhojas, Anu of the Mlecchas, and Puru of the Pauravas (King Poros). Other notable sages from Atri rishi’s lineage include Savasva, Avistir, Purvatithi, Mudgala, Shakalayani, and Chandogya.

The involvement of Rishi Atri

Rishi Atri is credited with developing the sacred system of thread known as Poonal, Janivara, or Jandhyam after Deva Guru Brihaspati. The letters A, U, and M, which stand for Beginning (Brahma), Preservation (Vishnu), and Destruction are represented by the three strands of yarn (Shiva). Following the marriage ceremony, the second strand is handed to the couple (representing bhuva Loka), and the third and final strand is offered to the goddess Diksha (representing Suwa or swarga Loka).

Atri Mandala is a unique mandala that belongs to Maharishi Atri. For numerous deities, including Indra, Agni, Ashwini Kumar, and even demigods, he is the first to visualize them and compose songs in their honor. The 87 hymns in the Atri Mandala are in honor of Atri Rishi and his heirs.

Atri Rishi has also made contributions to astrology and medicine. To carry out ceremonies, yajnas, prayers, and meditation, he has created rules, techniques, and mahurat. Sage Atri has produced several writings and formulations for Ayurveda.

Prabhas' next film, Adipurush, is set to be released on January 12, 2023. The film is based on the epic Ramayana. Om Raut, a Bollywood director, is directing the film. However, the first look has yet to be released. The film's post-production work is now underway.

On September 26, the makers also planned to release Adipurush's first herculean-style look. The Luv Kush Ramlila Event will take place in Delhi on October 5. Adipurush team has grand plans to introduce the mighty Rebel Star Prabhas as Lord Rama.

Shastriya sangeetham's divinity

Nowadays, the carnatic music kucheris have become a factor of entertainment for the audience and the demonstration of the personalities for the vidwans. The attire of the vidwans become the talking point for many in the December seasons. Of course, there are quite a few exceptions where the vidwans take utmost care to handle the shastriya sangeetham the way prescribed by the elders. Though it's not a crime to  enjoy carnatic music as a wholesome entertainment, but the purpose of those kritis by the great vagyekaras like Muthuswamy Dikshithar, Thyaga Brahmam, Oothukkadu Venkatasubbaiyar and many others were not not composed for entertainment reasons. 

Most vagyekaras practised the music as the pathway to moksha, by singing in praise of various deities based on their preferences. For instance, Thyaga brahmam had the singular goal to reach the holy feet of Rama and his entire life was devoted towards that goal. And his kritis exemplarily showcased his bhakti emanating from his heart. Legend says that Rama along with Sita and Hanuman visited the humble house of Tyaga brahmam at Tiruvaiyaru in the guise of elderly pilgrims who are on their way to the famed temple town of Rameswaram. 

Muthuswamy Dikshithar, the youngest of the trinity can be seen as a reincarnation of Adi Shankaracharya, propounding the advaita philosophy through his kritis. His kritis covered all the deities of the shanmatha (six faiths) the sanatana dharma format devised by Adi Shankaracharya. All of his kritis were mantras in the musical format and he attained moksha only through his divine music. Unlike Tyaga Brahmam who was more or less a resident of Tiruvaiyaru by practising Rama bhakti through his kritis, Dikshithar was an eternal pilgrim who was constantly on the move by visiting various kshetras on his journey. Apart from many kritis he has sung at Thiruvarur, his birth place, on various deities at the famed Shiva temple, Dikshithar has sung on the deities in many kshetras which he visited during his course of life. 

There were many kritis which demonstrated the mystic powers of Dikshithar and his blissful bhakti. Take the case of Kamalamba Navavarnam, which is a set of 9 kritis with two additional songs for invocation and mangalam. Navavarna pooja is a very complex and elaborate ritual performed by the Srividya upasakas with proper initiation through the gurus. Being a Srividya upasaka himself, Dikshithar gave the essence of Navavarna pooja in the form of navavarna kritis to be practised by the pious commoners who do not have the ability to go through the rigours of Srividya upasana through gurumukha. 

There were many instances of miracles demonstrated by Dikshithar in his lifetime through his kritis. For the starters, Muthuswamy Dikshithar was formally trained not just in shastriya sangeetham, but was also well versed in Jyothisham(astrology), Vedas and the other branches of the Vedic studies. That gave him a panoramic view of our Sanatana Dharma which resulted in such wonderful, soul stirring kritis. For example, his dharma pathini was fond of jewels just like any other usual woman. But Dikshithar who never sung his songs for money never had the inclination to acquire wealth and could not fulfill the aspirations of his wife. He sang a kriti on Goddess Lakshmi through the kriti "Hiranmayeem Lakshmim" and the same night Lakshmi Devi appeared in the dreams of his wife offering her countless jewels adorned by her. 

Dikshithar's wife was astonished and replied Lakshmi saying just the mere darshan of Lakshmi Devi itself is enough for her. On another occasion, When Dikshithar was traveling in the South of Tamil Nadu, he crossed an area which was plagued by drought without any rains. On hearing the heart wrenching tales of the locals, Dikshithar instantly sang the kriti "Anandamrutha karshini" in the ragam Amrithavarshini seeking the blessings of the rain god. In no time the entire area was flooded with rain waters and he had to then plead for the rains to stop. 

There is an interesting incident associated with his very first kriti, Sri Nathadi Guruguho in the Mayamalava gowla ragam. When Dikshithar was visiting the hill shrine of Tiruttani Subramanya Kshetra, an elderly Brahmin was coming down in the opposite direction and in a flash he put sugar candy (Kalkandu) into the mouth of Dikshithar, who later realized it was none other Lord Subramanya who encountered in the form of an elderly Brahmin. He started with his first kriti from Tiruttani. On another occasion, Dikshithar was visiting Keevalur, a small village near his native Tiruvarur. By the time he reached the shiva temple there, the screen was down after the noon puja. Naturally disappointed with this, he burst out with his kriti "Akshaya Linga Vibho" in the ragam sankarabharanam. Just as he was singing this kriti, the Lord Shiva, gracefully opened the screen just to give darshan to his dear devotee, the Dikshithar. 

There were countless miracles performed by Dikshithar through his kritis. In fact, those kritis were composed for the benefit of the commoners to overcome the pains and the illusions of the material lives. For people who consider shastriya sangeetham as mere songs for entertainment and leisure, it's time for the realization that the kritis were packed with mantras in the musical format. And these kritis were able to melt the hearts of the deities if they were sung in the same devotion of Dikshithar!

Tyagaraja (4 May 1767 – 6 January 1847), also known as Tyāgayya, was a renowned composer of Carnatic music, a form of Indian classical music. He was prolific and highly influential in the development of India's classical music tradition. Tyagaraja and his contemporaries, Shyama Shastri and Muthuswami Dikshitar, are regarded as the Trinity of Carnatic music. Tyagaraja composed thousands of devotional compositions, most in Telugu and in praise of Lord Rama, many of which remain popular today. Of special mention are five of his compositions called the Pancharatna Kritis (English: "five gems"), which are often sung in programs in his honour.
