Kat Tracks: 2020
This is the final post of my annual list of favorite tunes that I’ve been doing for seven whole years! 2020 was a shitty year for humanity, but at least the music was good. Check out my top twenty picks below the cut.
1: Chicane feat. Moya Brennan- Saltwater (Kevin de Vries Remix) Kicking off this absolute flaming garbage heap of a year is a nice new house-flavored remix of a beloved classic. I am, admittedly, a sucker for a good remix, especially one that respects the integrity of the original track.
2: Cold Blue- In Madness / Winter Gates Although the album Winter from which these singles come from was released in November of 2019, the extended versions were released this year. And really, who doesn’t love a good extended mix? In Madness channels much of the frenetic energy I felt while in lockdown.
3: Seven Lions- Find Another Way This five-track EP proves what a phenomenal producer Jeff is. Each collab sounds more amazing than the last, but my favorite track has to be the title one featuring April Bender.
4: Jorn van Deynhoven- The Future is Now Yet another title track from an artist album released in March. It’s a downtempo/ambient piece featuring a piano melody, which I am also a sucker for. The buildup is lovely and conveys a sense of hope.
5: Nikola Melnikov & Max Sorokin- Pandawa Something this nice could only have come from a premier label like Anjunadeep. It has a rather ethereal vibe that you can get lost in and let carry you away.
6: Conki & Mark Wilkinson- I’m on Fire Yes, I am still listening to indie-flavored house music on SoundCloud. What else would you listen to on that platform, future bass or something? Psh. This is a solid cover of the original by Bruce Springsteen.
7: Elysian- Moonchild This banger is a collaboration between the Anjuna family’s Ilan Bluestone and Maor Levi, with trance staple Emma Hewitt providing vocals. It’s solid electronica, but I’m also a fan of the trancier OTIOT remix that was released in December.
8: Paul van Dyk- Escape Reality A full chillout/ambient/downtempo remix album from the legendary PvD? Heckin’ yes please. This is very much the same flavor as Aly & Fila’s The Chillout album from 2015, which you should also listen to.
9: Stoby & G. Coulter feat. Liz Cirelli- Sun is High (Solarstone Vocal Retouch) Who’s ready for summer? This track makes me want to groove on a beach all day and into the night.
10: Hemstock & Jennings- Mirage of Hope (2020 Version) Mirage is my favorite track of this year. The title says it all, really, but the lyrics are even more fitting.
11: Crystal Skies feat. Luma- Hear Me Now I was surprised by the quality of this dnb release on Ophelia, Seven Lions’ label, but after their superb Constellations EP from last year, I gladly gave Crystal Skies my undivided attention once more.
12: 4 Strings- Take Me Away (BLR Remix) It’s another great remix of a classic, this time with distinct deep house flavor. 4 Strings’ Believe album was one of my first forays into the trance genre and I can’t say enough good things about how this version does justice to the original.
13: Tribu- Sweet Disposition This is an extremely good deep house cover of the original by The Temper Trap. Tribu is a new alias of Vijay & Sofia, who I’ve followed on SoundCloud for a few years. There seems to be two versions of this track with slightly different vocals. I prefer the one released in April to the second release in July.
14: Craig Connelly feat. Karina Ramage- Life Half Lived (Club Mix) If you have browsed any of these lists from previous years, you know how much I appreciate the production value of Craig Connelly. This trance track is a more uplifting version of the one found on his A Sharper Edge artist album.
15: Bunt feat. Clarence Coffee Jr.- Unbreakable I adore the Bunt guys with their “folk house” sound and have been keeping up with their releases on SoundCloud since the beginning. This track basically punches you in the face with self-affirmation and confidence.
16: JPL & Jason van Wyk feat. Cat Martin- Unsteady (Pierre Pienaar Remix) Going in the opposite direction now is a melancholy trance offering from Pierre Pienaar, featured on PvD’s Vonyc Sessions podcast. What I really love is the breakdown exactly halfway through featuring that unmistakable JPL sound but with an elevated edge.
17: Kristina Sky & Danny Stubbs feat. Evan Henzi- High Tide I was a big fan of Danny Stubbs’ previous work on Broken, also from the Perfecto label. This track was heavily promoted by Paul Oakenfold. I couldn’t help but fall for the breathy male vocals.
18: Tenth Planet- Ghosts (Darren Porter Remix) Rounding out the year of classic remixes is this banging new progressive trance offering. I like that Darren Porter parred everything back from the chorus so you can actually hear the lyrics, not to mention he preserved that iconic buildup.
19: Nurko feat. Devon Baldwin- Blindspot (Parts 1 & 2) So, this is really interesting. It’s two versions of the same song. Both are in the melodic dubstep genre yet they’re very different from each other. Part 1 is a bit more toned down and Part 2 is slightly more elevated. I also like the story being told. Give these a listen and see if you can pick a favorite.
20: Yula- Fade Away (Soul Version) I never listened to the original release of this track, but I kind of don’t want to because I’m afraid it’ll ruin the emotional resonance of this downtempo version.
Previous Lists: 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013

Canon Pan Characters on Current TV Shows
Pan representation in television is scarce, so scarce that there's only about 40 pan characters in television. That might sound like a lot, maybe more than you knew or thought, but almost half of those character are not explicitly stated as pan, they're merely hinted at being pan, and they're wildly considered to be bisexual by every major queer organization that talks about queer rep.
Some of these implied pan characters, who people wildly accept as canon bi rep and never mention pansexuality in regard to them are Amy Raudenfeld (Faking It), Roscoe Kaan (House of Lies), Craig Pelton (Community), Oberyn Martell (Game of Thrones), Sammy Lieberman (Dance Academy), Franky Fitzgerald (Skins), and Kristina Davis (General Hospital).
When queer organizations talk about bi rep, they include every single multisexual character, unlabeled or not, and when they do so, pan rep falls through the cracks. Characters that are strongly implied to be pan, through what is shown on screen and what the actor or writers say off screen, are thrown under a bi "umbrella" that a lot of pan people don't feel is appropriate, and often never have their implied pansexuality mentioned. This contributes to pan-erasure.
The other half of those 40-something pan characters, are canonically pan. Among them are Imogen Moreno (Degrassi), Carlton Lassiter (Psych), Even Bech Næsheim (Skam), Jack Harkness (Doctor Who and Torchwood), John Hart (Torchwood), Sadie Swenson (Scream Queens), Kibby Ainsley (Daytime Divas), and Kieren Walker (In the Flesh).
In honor of #PanWeek, I’ve compiled this list to celebrate the pan characters who are gracing our screens on current television shows. Both canon and implied pan characters will be included. A masterlist of pan characters in all media can be found here.
Annalise Keating, How to Get Away with Murder
To kick off the list, we have the iconic, the badass, the take-no-shit-from-anyone Annalise Keating from How to Get Away with Murder, portrayed by Viola Davis, who won several awards for her role, and became the first black woman to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama series.
Annalise, a prominent criminal defense attorney and law professor, has been assumed as bisexual by most, despite never having labeled her sexuality. Recently, Pete Nowalk, creator/showrunner/executive producer of How to Get Away with Murder, announced at the 2017 TCA press tour that, while they've never said it, Annalise is pansexual. Shortly after, Viola spoke about how excited and happy she is about her character's pansexuality. Hopefully Annalise's pansexuality will be directly acknowledged on the show in the future.
How to Get Away with Murder is on its fourth season, which premiered on September 28, 2017 on ABC.
David Rose, Schitt's Creek
All pan characters are important to me, but this one has a special place in my heart. David Rose from Schitt's Creek, portrayed by Dan Levy, is pampered, sarcastic, a little clueless, and delivers a nice deadpan while wearing some...interesting pieces of clothing. He, in my opinion, is a breath of fresh air when it comes to pan rep and queer rep in general.
Schitt's Creek is a sitcom that follows the Rose family as they move to a tiny, simple town and live in a rundown motel, after losing all of their money. Now, when I think of queer rep on sitcoms, I think of the token or side queer character, the queer character whose sexuality is comedic relief, or the main queer character whose sexuality is at the forefront of everything related to that character.
David, however, is a main character who just happens to be pansexual; it isn't the focal point of his character, nor is it used for cheap laughs or added just to say they have a queer character. It's ten episodes into the first season that David describes his pansexuality with a wine metaphor, and his father outright says the word in a later scene.
It's not only what we see on screen that makes David Rose so important to me, but the behind the scenes, as well. Dan Levy is also a creator/executive producer of Schitt's Creek, and going in, he knew he wanted David to be pansexual, because he had never seen that on TV before. He's spoken at length about his character's pansexuality and how important it is to normalize pansexuality and for pan people to have representation. Being queer himself, it is so obvious how important this representation is to him, and how much care he puts into it.
The fourth season of Schitt's Creek will premiere on January 24, 2018 on Pop TV.
Lucifer and Mazikeen, Lucifer
The fantasy police procedural show, Lucifer, has two, count 'em, TWO pansexual characters. The titular character, Lucifer Morningstar, portrayed by Tom Ellis, is pansexual, confirmed by the writers. He is the actual devil who decided leave hell and become a civilian consultant to the L.A.P.D., while running a nightclub. He talks freely about being the devil, but no one takes him seriously. He uses his supernatural ability of making people tell him their desires and his invulnerability to help solve murders.
Lucifer's ally, Mazikeen Smith, portrayed by Lesley-Ann Brandt, is also pansexual, confirmed by Lesley. She is a demon who followed Lucifer to L.A., worked at his nightclub, and later became a bounty hunter. While Lucifer provides the majority of the comedy for this comedy-drama series, Mazikeen fulfills everyone's need for a badass, scary-sexy, no nonsense woman. With a fondness for knives and causing (well-deserved) pain.
The third season of Lucifer premiered on October 2, 2017 on Fox.
Rick Sanchez, Rick and Morty
Now we have Rick Sanchez, an alcoholic genius scientist, voiced by Justin Roiland, from the animated science fiction series, Rick and Morty. Rick was revealed to be pansexual by Justin Roiland, co-creator of Rick and Morty. Rick is obnoxious, blunt, and not exactly a role model. But he's flawed, he's human, he's real. And that's part of his appeal as a pansexual character.
Rick and Morty has three seasons, the last of which, ended on October 1, 2017 on Adult Swim, and the fourth season won't arrive for a "really long time", according to Adult Swim's Twitter account.
Cassidy, Preacher
Next up is Cassidy from the supernatural series Preacher, portrayed by Joseph Gilgun. Preacher follows a, you guessed it, preacher, who enlists the help of a vampire to find God, after a supernatural event at his church. Cassidy is said vampire. Cassidy is a boisterous mischief-maker who is up for anything. Cassidy is said on screen to "have sex with anyone", which, while not the best, means there isn't a gender he isn't attracted to.
The third season of Preacher will air in 2018 on AMC.
Lauren Heller, Younger
We also have Lauren Heller from Younger, portrayed by Molly Bernard. Lauren works as a publicist, and is described as hooked on social media, completely non-judgmental, very funny, and very open to people. Lauren is curious and excited, loves herself and is comfortable with the unknown. Lauren is confirmed by Molly, Darren Star, creator, and Alison Brown, writer for Younger to be pansexual.
Younger wrapped its fourth season in September 2017 on TV Land, and was renewed for a fifth season.
Nola Darling, She's Gotta Have It
The latest pansexual character is Nola Darling, portrayed by DeWanda Wise, on Netflix's comedy-drama series, She's Gotta Have It, based on the 1986 film of the same name. The series follows Nola as she struggles to stay true to herself and her dreams while juggling multiple lovers. Nola, an artist, describes herself as a sex-positive, polyamorous pansexual.
She's Gotta Have It premiered on Netflix on November 23, 2017.
Brook Soso, Orange is the New Black
One of our implied pan characters is Brook Soso from Orange is the New Black, portrayed by Kimiko Glenn. Brook is a passionate, kind, and talkative inmate. Brook makes a comment about being attracted to people, not genders, which is a very strong indication of her maybe being pansexual.
Orange is the New Black aired its fifth season on Netflix in June 2017, and is renewed for a sixth and seventh season.
Nova Bordelon, Queen Sugar
The other implied pan character is Nova Bordelon from Queen Sugar, portrayed by Rutina Welsey. Nova is one of the three siblings that the show follows. She is a journalist, activist, and herbal healer. Nova makes a comment about how her attraction isn't about someone's sex or gender, it's about what's inside of them; an indication of her possibly being pansexual.
Queen Sugar aired its mid-season two premiere on October 3, 2017 on OWN.
Make sure to catch up on and tune into these shows to get your fill of these pan characters!
Who is your favorite pan character from current TV shows? Is there one missing from this list? Is your favorite pan character from a show that has already ended? Let me know!

In this deeply personal book, the celebrated Haitian-American writer Edwidge Danticat reflects on art and exile, examining what it means to be an immigrant artist from a country in crisis. Inspired by Albert Camus' lecture, "Create Dangerously," and combining memoir and essay, Danticat tells the stories of artists, including herself, who create despite, or because of, the horrors that drove them from their homelands and that continue to haunt them. Danticat also suggests that the aftermaths of natural disasters in Haiti and the United States reveal that the countries are not as different as many Americans might like to believe.
Create Dangerously is an eloquent and moving expression of Danticat's belief that immigrant artists are obliged to bear witness when their countries of origin are suffering from violence, oppression, poverty, and tragedy.

Barbie Is 60! Here’s A Look Back At Her Transformation.
This post was originally published on this site
There’s no denying Barbie is one of the most iconic toys in the world, and she sure has come a long way since she was first introduced to the world.
Ruth Handler created Barbie in 1959 with the philosophy that little girls, through playing with the doll, could be anything they wanted to be. “Barbie always represented the fact that a woman has choices,” Handler once said.
Over the years, the Mattel doll has been been everything from an astronaut to a firefighter to a game developer, and even the president of the United States. She’s also faced her fair share of controversy; some people have questioned whether she perpetuates stereotypical gender roles and lacks racial representation, while others believe her slim body and unrealistic proportions promote an unhealthy beauty standard.
That’s not to say Barbie hasn’t evolved though. In 2015, the brand launched its very first “Shero” campaign. Through the initiative, Barbie has honored boundary-breaking women like Ava DuVernay, Naomi Osaka, Eva Chen and Ibtihaj Muhammad with their very own dolls. In 2016, Mattel went a step further and released a range of dolls with different body types, more hairstyles and seven skin tones, to better represent the world we live in.
She’s always been quite the fashion plate, acting as a mini-muse for designers like Bob Mackie, Karl Lagerfeld and Jeremy Scott at Moschino.
“Barbie has always been a reflection of current fashion and beauty trends ― from wearing mod dresses and ‘Twiggy looks’ in the ’60s to now rocking street style, athleisure and a half shaved hair look, there isn’t a trend she’s afraid to try,” Robert Best, senior design director at Barbie, told HuffPost via email.
In honor of Barbie’s 60th anniversary, we’re taking a look back at some of her most iconic fashion moments over the years. Check them out below:

Weeks after Bode Miller and wife, Morgan Beck, lost their toddler daughter, Emmy, to a tragic pool drowning incident, the heartbroken mom has posted a disturbing photo of her now-deceased baby girl.
SEE THE DISTURBING IMAGE
“I wish I could have one more day to hold you, but until that day comes, continue to work through me and give me the strength to bring awareness, my love,” Beck, 31, captioned the heart-wrenching image of her crying over her dead daughter’s body.
“I told you as I held you in this moment that you could still change the world, you could still move mountains. Every step we take forward is because of you and Levi. Your footprint will forever be left on this world. I love you, My baby girl,” she added.
RadarOnline.com readers know both Beck and Miller, 40, have opened up about the tragic death of their toddler daughter ever since she accidentally drowned inside a neighbor’s pool.

“It’s been 37 days since I’ve held my baby girl. I pray to God no other parent feels this pain. My heart is with you @nicolehughes8 as we walk this journey together. And thank you @scarymommy for helping us spread awareness,” wrote Beck in an Instagram post, days after mourning the death of her child this June.
Miller also spoke of the tragedy, writing on Instagram that the entire family was absolutely “devastated” by the toddler’s sudden passing.
“We are beyond devastated. Our baby girl, Emmy, passed away yesterday. Never in a million years did we think we would experience a pain like this. Her love, her light, her spirit will never be forgotten. Our little girl loved life and lived it to it’s fullest everyday. Our family respectfully requests privacy during this painful time,” he captioned a photo of his daughter on June 11.

Now, both Bode Miller and Morgan Beck have chosen to move past the pain and continue growing their family.
Beck will welcome another child later this year, and the couple will continue to focus on raising awareness about the dangers of drowning deaths for kids.
